00:00:09A deadly attack on Riyad Airport kills at least
00:00:12of 12 people and injures more than 300, including Saudi and
00:00:16US
00:00:18of Nationals. Hello,
00:00:19of welcome to TRT World, live from Istanbul, with me John Paul
00:00:23Davis, also ahead on the program, Donald Trump calls
00:00:26for a leadership change
00:00:28in in
00:00:29of Ukraine after president Zelensky criticizes his move
00:00:32ease sanctions on Russian
00:00:34diesel, thousands march
00:00:38across five continents
00:00:39in a coordinated day of global action in solidarity with
00:00:43Palestinians and
00:00:47police in India detained thousands of
00:00:49of protesters taking part in major
00:00:52of demonstration against the country's election
00:00:54commission.
00:01:14a but first
00:01:15in this hour, the Saudi Civil Aviation authority say that at least
00:01:1912 people have been killed and more than 300 injured in the
00:01:23of latest attack on the King Khalid international airport in Riad. Well, the
00:01:27statement did not assign blame, but it did, go to say that the
00:01:31decease included four Saudi citizens, two
00:01:34Bangladeshis and one citizen each from Palestine, the
00:01:37United
00:01:38of States,
00:01:39of Egypt, in of Jordan, Syria and Sudan. Well, the strike on
00:01:43Riyadh's main airport was the third this week, and it's
00:01:46prompted US president Donald Trump to consider whether to join the
00:01:50fight against the Ansarulahutis in
00:01:53Yemen. Well, several countries,
00:01:57including the US and Germany have advised. their citizens to avoid
00:02:01the king Khalid international airport. All flights have been either
00:02:04cancelled
00:02:05or diverted. Well,
00:02:07in a statement, Saudi's civil aviation authority say that it's not
00:02:11known when flights will resume and that airport
00:02:14operations have been temporarily suspended until the damages have
00:02:18been
00:02:20of
00:02:21of assessed. Well, the Saudi
00:02:22a Led coalition say that it has also intercepted a missile
00:02:25southeast of Riyad where the Prince Sultan Airbase is
00:02:29located. Meanwile on the ground in Yemen, fighting between Saudi
00:02:33backed government forces and the His continues.
00:02:36Yemen's army say that it has struck more than 1900 hoothi
00:02:40targets in just 24 hours. Mohammed Alatab reports
00:02:44now from the capital Sanai. The conflict in
00:02:48Yemen is widening with both sides expanding their bank of targets
00:02:52and civilians paying the price. The enemy armed forces announced over
00:02:561,900 strikes across various fronts in 24
00:02:59of hours. under operation Yaman's done, spokes person, colonel Majid
00:03:03Anuzi said the strikes hit weapons depart a cams,
00:03:07command center, reinforcements and supply vehicles,
00:03:10neutralizing more than
00:03:12of 1,150 huti fighters and destroying or damaging
00:03:16over 180 vehicles, he also mentioned that ground forces
00:03:20advance
00:03:21of further and retaking positions, hothy media reported
00:03:24coalition strikes on Sanha, airports and telecommunication towers
00:03:28in Saada plus strikes on Tiz and Hajjah
00:03:32hotis said their forces targeted reinforcements from
00:03:36Aden
00:03:36in along the southern coastal road inflicting heavy losses on
00:03:40IRG's forces according to the group later
00:03:43of on on they also distributed footage of dr
00:03:47strikes on what they described as Saudi gatherings in
00:03:50Kahbob and alwaziah the internationally recognized
00:03:54government confirmed losses inflected on hothy fighters in
00:03:57almaset and
00:03:59of said it's control of alaradi and swaidi camps near
00:04:03Dubab, the southern giant
00:04:05of of brigades said they repelled the hothy attack north of Dubab
00:04:09a airport with Arab
00:04:10in Coalition air support. The houthies did not confirm or deny the
00:04:14news as clashes intensify toward Babilmandeb hot
00:04:18of spot neither side intends to abandon observers w
00:04:22the conflict could threaten international navigation or ignite
00:04:26a wider war. After 12
00:04:28a years of relentless. Yemenis continue to
00:04:32bear its brant. Well, as the US secretary
00:04:36of state, Marco Rubio
00:04:38in condems the attack saying
00:04:40a that
00:04:40a an American citizen lost their lives
00:04:43in that attack. Mike William Lawrence, a former
00:04:47US diplomat spoke to us about this, and he says that
00:04:50it is looking now more likely that the US will get involved in the
00:04:54conflict. There's offensive aspects and
00:04:58defensive aspects
00:04:59of on the...
00:05:00a offensive side the hooties have started to figure
00:05:03out
00:05:04um building on successes that the Iranians have had
00:05:08of and the Russians have
00:05:09had using similar technology um they figured out how to evade the
00:05:13defenses and on the Saudi side um there
00:05:17is issue of um very expensive weaponry that's needed
00:05:21to defend and depletion
00:05:24of this the weaponry that's available and so
00:05:28they may not be deploying the maximum number of very expensive
00:05:32weaponry to uh to defend themselves. i know that the US
00:05:35is rushing to get more weapons um to
00:05:39Saudi Arabia and that be may be one the reasons why Trump is
00:05:43actively assessing whether the US will join the frey right now,
00:05:46because as you say, if Saudi can't sufficiently defend itself, then the
00:05:50US might need to go on offensive uh in Yemen in
00:05:54Northern Yemen in order to help defend Saudi Arabia, and the more success the
00:05:58Houties have the greater uh the likelihood that Trump will get
00:06:01involved, you know in Trump's mind he he one the reasons he
00:06:05was uh happy to take the promise from the Houthies that they wouldn't attack American shipping
00:06:09as a way to not connect the conflicts further,
00:06:12"these attacks on Saudi Arabia are now reconnecting the
00:06:16conflict in a way that makes it somewhat inevitable that the
00:06:20US will get more involved. well, the
00:06:23UK's maritime organization say that it has received
00:06:27report of fire on board an outbound tanker in the straight of
00:06:30homos after it was struck by an unknown
00:06:33projectile. well, this news comes after several ships anchored
00:06:37near Razal Kaima in the United Arab Emirates, not far from
00:06:41the straight were..." instructed to leave, now it's not known who
00:06:45broadcast that message telling them to leave or why the vessels were told
00:06:49to move, but earlier on Saturday, Iran's revolutionary
00:06:52guard said that a tanker transiting the waterway along what it calls
00:06:56an unauthorized route exploded after it hit a
00:07:00mine.
00:07:24Well President Donald Trump says it is time for Ukraine to get new
00:07:28president, that follows criticism from his Ukrainian
00:07:32counterpart a US diesel deal with Russia. Vladimir
00:07:36Zelensky warned that that deal will only enable Russia's
00:07:39war.
00:07:40The agreement is expected to lead. the release of more than
00:07:44300,000 tons of Russian fuel to the
00:07:47US and global markets and it comes ahead of critical
00:07:51mid-term elections, while Trump blames the Ukrainian president
00:07:55for the high diesel prices. Zelinski could
00:07:59have settled this war many times, many, many
00:08:02times, and he cho,
00:08:04he chooses not to, very difficult. We said you can do
00:08:08whatever you want to Russia, don't hit the refineries, because that's a world.
00:08:12problem that's caused and he wants to make problems for the
00:08:16world, he wants to make problems for our farmers, our ranchers
00:08:20with diesel fuel, because Russia supplies a
00:08:24large portion the diesel fuel throughout the world. you know what I
00:08:27suggest? I suggest they get new leader
00:08:31who can make deal, and I think it's time for Ukraine to get new
00:08:34president, now from the U.S. president Donald Trump
00:08:38who's just arrived back in Washington DC on Air Force 1.
00:08:42called the other day, he'd like to see settlement, president
00:08:46Putin would like to see settlement strongly, and look, he's he's
00:08:50freeing up lot of oil for the world, okay, that's a good
00:08:53thing,
00:08:54at at by the way, a very low price, are you surprised that democrats
00:08:58have embrace socialism and uh socialism
00:09:02so openly, democrats have embraced that, are you surprised?
00:09:05well, I think that the democrats have become the socialists of America,
00:09:09and I think that they ought to get rid the name democrat buse it's no
00:09:13longer accurate, but you have a combination of socialist and
00:09:17communist, and I think frankly the word democrat
00:09:21is a or democrat as I call it, but I think it's
00:09:25a very inaccurate name, democrat is a very, they're really
00:09:29socialist, they become socialist, and they're being dragged much further
00:09:32left than socialism, have
00:09:36you spoken, have you spoken to senator John Federman about
00:09:40becoming republican, you like? see that, I'd love to see it, I think he's
00:09:44great, uh, it's going to be hard for him to get
00:09:48the nomination as democrat, but I'd love to have
00:09:52him as republican. John Federman's a great guy, with
00:09:56magnificent parents, I got to speak to his parents about
00:10:00something, and they were great, the mother, the father, he's
00:10:03a, he's a very solid person, he's a person, he's smart
00:10:07and all that, but he's got great common sense, but if you look
00:10:11at the polls, he does. better as republican than he does is
00:10:14a democrat you saw the attack
00:10:18on on Ryon airport
00:10:20he was killed like dozen people what do you think about that? i think it's
00:10:23terrible. well you're going to find out, see, but
00:10:27I think it's terrible,
00:10:29were the Saudis able to defend themselves, well they're
00:10:33able to defend, look, the Saudis are good fighters, but I think the
00:10:37attack was terrible thing, you just chose your new press
00:10:41secretary, uh, what stood out to you about Katie and what do you hope that she
00:10:45brings to the table? well, I've watched Katie who is
00:10:49uh, taking the place of Caroline, you know how fabulous
00:10:52Caroline was, Caroline's... going to have some
00:10:56very big success, I believe, I know, buse she's very
00:11:00outstanding. I think Katie is going to do a great job. I've known Katiy
00:11:04a little bit, but I've watched her lot on television,
00:11:08and she does very good job and she believes in us and she believes in what
00:11:12we're doing, which is making America great again.
00:11:16She really does. Thank you for that question. Federal deficit
00:11:19last year, last fiscal year, huge brillion. So there
00:11:23you go, that is Donald Trump. the US president, returning from
00:11:27rally to Washington DC on Air Force One, speaking
00:11:31to the gathered press, as often he does and
00:11:34jumping around from one question to
00:11:37the next, but let's pick up on what he had to say specifically about this
00:11:41diesel deal with Russia, and to do so I'm joined by David Doros, she's
00:11:44associate professor at the neareast South Asia center the National
00:11:48Defense University, joins us uh from Washington DC where the president is
00:11:52currently speaking from, uh great. have you on this
00:11:56evening, David, we we we heard then Donald Trump say that
00:12:00Vladimir Putin would like to see settlement and
00:12:03has freeed up lot of diesel to the world, which Trump
00:12:06describes as as a good thing. It comes just three
00:12:10weeks after Trump authorized fresh US sanctions
00:12:14nations importing Russian oil and gas. I wonder
00:12:18whether this this latest U-turn
00:12:21is is Donald Trump's most desperate.
00:12:25yes
00:12:25yet and is he sacrificing foreign policy on the altar
00:12:29of domestic politics where the
00:12:33midterms obviously are approaching
00:12:35and I wonder whether it just smacks of desperation to
00:12:37you? yeah
00:12:40I'm not sure to be honest um easier
00:12:43measure uh would be to just ban US exports of
00:12:47diesel the United States exports diesel um I I I imagine
00:12:51one way to fight to look at it positively if you were trying to
00:12:55that would be to say, look, there's a global crisis in diesel. um,
00:12:59Putin has agreed to sell a small amount of diesel to the U.S. again,
00:13:03I don't know why we want it or need it,
00:13:06and that there is going to be combined with
00:13:09Elninho, sharp agricultural prices in the developing world
00:13:13next year, so you wave the sanctions on
00:13:16Russian exports of diesel, uh, that allows
00:13:20for people in the developing south to have more affordable
00:13:23agriculture in... looking to be a really hard year coming up
00:13:27ahead. when a superpower always has contending foreign policy issues, so
00:13:31in this instance you sacrifice uh the
00:13:34Russian uh uh benefit for the uh for
00:13:38the um uh global uh poverty benefit,
00:13:42but um it's hard to see, we'll see, we'll see if
00:13:46these wavers take place after the election um
00:13:50and and if it
00:13:50is to influence the election, I mean the amount of diesel to the
00:13:54U.S. that's being talked about is is very small, it's
00:13:58it's uh a fraction of what the United States consumes
00:14:01a day, it's not going to make an appreciable difference, and the
00:14:05idea that um this will lower prices for the
00:14:09election, I think he you know if he really believes that he's he's being seriously
00:14:12misled, yeah, which which begs the question, why do it
00:14:16in the first place, and and what do you feel, David, are the
00:14:20potential implications of giving Russia
00:14:23this? economic relief I suppose, or
00:14:26enabling
00:14:27the their war against Ukraine further, when the likes the EU and
00:14:31the UK have reinforced their solidarity with Zelensky in
00:14:34Ukraine. Yeah, well Trump, Trump dislikes
00:14:38Zelensky, he holds Zelenski responsible for his in part
00:14:42for his first impeachment. He doesn't think that Zelinsky set up the impeachment,
00:14:46but that Zinski could have made a public statement and would have derailed the
00:14:49impeachment, and I mean you saw that amazing spectacle
00:14:53of Trump and... ganging up on Zelensky in his first visit to the White
00:14:57House, which was really kind of disgraceful.
00:15:01So, he, there's no love loss there, but I, I
00:15:04do think that again, if Trump wanted to just influence the
00:15:08price of diesel in the United States, he just say, okay, we're not going to export
00:15:12diesel, and uh, that would have a more immediate effect and
00:15:16would be, yeah, more um, condusive for
00:15:19US prices, but uh, I think what's possible
00:15:23here is just all these. leaders are talking about the
00:15:26impending, you you've got shortages of diesel, you've got shortages
00:15:30of fertilizer, and you've got Elninho, we might
00:15:34see a global spike in food price.
00:15:38is uh similar to what we saw in 2009 that really affected
00:15:41the the global south and most of this exported diesel is
00:15:45is going to go to those countries so you know it's it's quite possible that it's
00:15:49just in interest you know different priorities and he's prioritized one thing
00:15:53over the other or it's possible that uh uh one the things his
00:15:57detractors say is that he's always agrees with the last person he spoke to
00:16:01and you know maybe this is just a weird idea that he's decided
00:16:05to embrace yeah That's an interesting point, I
00:16:08mean it was only less than three months ago that Donald Trump said that the US would enable
00:16:12Ukraine to have those patriot air defense missiles, of course he since backed
00:16:15away from that pledge, maybe there was something about just watching
00:16:19that whole scenario which didn't really ring true
00:16:23on reflection, but I do you think he's come full circle with
00:16:27this deal um and in terms of his relations with
00:16:31with Putin and is he globally becoming not only
00:16:34destabilizing but but an isolated figure? and I say globally,
00:16:38but but but even at home there, David, in in the
00:16:41U.S., well, his his popularity
00:16:45ranges are pretty low, um, I don't think they've reached Joe Biden territory,
00:16:49but they're low, uh, and a large part of that is because we're involved
00:16:53a war that he did not make the case for, he did
00:16:56not uh uh prepare people for it, uh, he did
00:17:00not uh prepare the military for it, uh, he went in
00:17:04with just one element of military power, air power, and uh
00:17:08that all that very rarely yields the
00:17:11uh uh, it's very seductive for Americans, but it very rarely gives us the success
00:17:15that we want, um, going all the way back to the strategic bomber
00:17:19offensive in World War II, so um, now he's in
00:17:23a war
00:17:23that he can't get out of, meanwhile he sees another war that he said he would solve
00:17:27within 48 hours of being in the white house, that's dragging
00:17:31on and on, um, I don't think he particularly likes
00:17:33Putin, uh, I think that he says,
00:17:35you know, he he does the businessman's thing. of
00:17:38you know not saying anything bad about people or even flattering
00:17:42people that he uh wants to cut a deal with publicly,
00:17:46but um it is
00:17:48it is case you know sometimes because he just trusts the
00:17:52bureaucracy, he occasionally goes in these things uh unbriefed
00:17:56or he rejects the brief as defeat as the product the bureaucracy, but
00:18:00when he promised those patriot missles it was like uh those won't be ready for
00:18:03five years,
00:18:04I mean there is backlog on making those and this isn't... "they're not
00:18:08assembly
00:18:08line items, they're artisanl items, so
00:18:12you know, he he he allows himself to talk himself into corners, I
00:18:15think, and it'll be interesting to see how he gets out of this. I think
00:18:19that um, people, you can't really ever speak of an American
00:18:23president is being isolated because of America's role in the world, but
00:18:27it's certainly clear that uh, world leaders view him as
00:18:30mercurial, and uh, I don't think anybody really
00:18:34relishes the idea of dealing with it. I mean, you look at some these..." priorities
00:18:38he's had, you know, the the whole Greenland thing with the Danes, that could
00:18:42have been solved in two days uh without any publicity, so
00:18:46there's a lot of odd things that just pop up and and uh
00:18:49certainly uh uh he he gets in his own
00:18:53way, that's probably the nicest way of phrasing
00:18:56it. David, as always, great to have you on TRT, well, thank you for your
00:19:00time and your insight, appreciate it, thank
00:19:03you.
00:19:11Fresh Israeli strikes have hit the Gaza strip on
00:19:15Saturday evening, Gaza City and Dar Albala are among those
00:19:19areas targeted. Earlier on on Saturday
00:19:22at least five Palestinians were killed and eight wounded when an
00:19:25Israeli strike hit a gathering of civilians in Gaza City.
00:19:29Another Palestinian was killed in separate incident. More than
00:19:331,400 Palestinians have been killed since the
00:19:36ceasefire. took effect in October last
00:19:39year, well protesters
00:19:43across five continents mobilized for Palestine
00:19:47on Saturday a coordinated day of action that spanned
00:19:51more than 60 countries. They're all uniting under one
00:19:55banner to try and end the occupation, and they're calling for a real
00:19:59ceasefire in Gaza. Well, in London, activists march to
00:20:03parliament to demand the UK cut their ties with
00:20:06Israel. Edwards dashty now
00:20:09reports.
00:20:13Millions of people marched across the globe a synchronized day
00:20:17of action for Palestine. In London, organizers
00:20:20say the genocide has to end. We have a
00:20:24government which is now making concessions about Palestine, but
00:20:28which actually has backed Israel to the hilt, and the demonstration today
00:20:32is to say, we have to have sanctions, we have to stop arming
00:20:35Israel, we have to do all them. things if we want to
00:20:39see real justice for the palestinians. look, the change and the tone from the
00:20:43British government has come directly because the activism on the ground. we
00:20:47need to continue pressurizing them so that they... impose full sanctions on
00:20:51Israel, they stop armselves to Israel and they break diplomatic
00:20:55ties with them, as the unslot and killings
00:20:59continue demonstrations took place across
00:21:02250 locations worldwide, the message
00:21:06is all the same, a cease fire now, the movement
00:21:10has long had demands including Israeli sanctions and an
00:21:14arms embargo, i want to support the right of
00:21:17palestinians to... go back to get their
00:21:21homes back and the occupation to
00:21:24end and of course some accountability,
00:21:28it is your duty as human to stop any type of
00:21:32genocide that is happening, no matter how much
00:21:35it is, politics is the things that divide us, humanity
