00:00:10You're watching TRT World with me John Paul Davis,
00:00:12a reminder now of our main headlines: the

00:00:30meanwhile, the Saudi Led coalition says it's also intercepted a missile
00:00:34southeast of Riad where the Prince Sultan Airbase is
00:00:37located. The US military
00:00:41say it has struck a commercial cargo vessel in the Gulf of Oman. The
00:00:45ship is said to have repeatedly ignored
00:00:48of warnings and attempted to violate the ongoing US naval blockade on
00:00:52Iran. At the military say it was disabled without harming the
00:00:55crew. The UK's maritime organization say it.

00:01:23in Lodin Zelensky has won the deal will

00:01:29more. 300 thous tons of Russian fuel to the US and
00:01:33global markets. Well, I think you should
00:01:37have an election, and uh, he could have settled this thing many
00:01:41of times. Well, I think that Russia would like to make
00:01:45of deal, and we've had
00:01:46of it back and forth, but Russia would like to make
00:01:49of deal, but uh, as I said, this is
00:01:52of something that could have been solved many times, but for
00:01:56whatever reason, Zelinski does not want to make deal.

00:05:26World.
00:05:57The Pandora papers have exposed the offshore accounts of one the biggest artieves
00:06:01in the world. Prominent UK businessman Douglas Latchford smuggled
00:06:05thousands of artifacts out of Cambodia, Thailand and India which are
00:06:09now housed in museums and in private collections in the. This is
00:06:13something done by people were supposedly respectable, whose names are
00:06:17visible on public labels in museums. We didn't
00:06:20understand the amount of activity that he was up
00:06:23to in terms of buying and selling student
00:06:26antiquities,
00:06:27but some museums are refusing to admit that they have looted artifacts on
00:06:31display. We have so much evidence, not
00:06:35just documents, but we still have living people around who
00:06:39can say, hey, we saw this statue.
00:06:42stolen, but they won't be around forever, we have to
00:06:46collect that evidence now, we can't wait another 10
00:06:50years, these cultural properties need to come
00:06:53home,
00:07:02a couple decades ago, there were lot thefts from this
00:07:06location, there were attempts of arm
00:07:10robbery so... became habit to keep it
00:07:14secret,
00:07:20it's a national treesor, so it's important to keep everything
00:07:24set. many the pieces are pieces that
00:07:28were looted from temples and then brought here, these
00:07:31are recovered pieces, maybe trucks were stopped at customs or
00:07:35at the border, it has more than 10,000
00:07:39pieces, so this gives you a sense of some... things that were on
00:07:43their way out of Cambodia. My name
00:07:47is Bradley Gordon. I'm an American lawyer living in Ponom
00:07:51Pen. I have 15 years experience running my own international practice
00:07:55here. I worked with refugees and then I was hired by the
00:07:58Cambodian Ministry of Culture and fine arts in 2018 to get back stolen
00:08:02antiquities. I think it's
00:08:06correcting a historical
00:08:07wrong. Looting goes way
00:08:11back. We have. have the French coming to Cambodia who went to
00:08:15Temples and took out statues. Those statues are now at the
00:08:19Gibe in Paris. And the scale the
00:08:22removal really picked up over the decades. American Gis
00:08:26in Vietnam. 1960s, we start to hear
00:08:30that heads were going out. Heads were easier to take out than the
00:08:34whole sculpture. So,
00:08:3772-79, we don't hear of too many statues
00:08:40disappearing. "there was a tragic
00:08:44chapter of Cambodian history where so many people lost their
00:08:48lives under the kamer ruch, but starting in the
00:08:5280s we see it pick up again
00:08:56and by the 90s it had become massive, the looting that
00:09:00was going on. they were using metal
00:09:03detectors and it was incredible destruction,
00:09:07just taking everything they knew they could get a good price
00:09:10for.
00:09:15so we're tracking more than 2,0 statues at
00:09:18105 museums around the world, maybe about a thousand
00:09:22in private collections. the team is working on gathering
00:09:26evidence, sometimes we are coming to location like
00:09:29this to see if anything that's been described to us matches what's
00:09:33here, here you can see their eyebrows,
00:09:37yeah eyebrow and the nose, that will help us in terms of
00:09:41building case. when we are looking outside of Cambodia and we see something
00:09:45a private collection or museum, we can say it's definitely
00:09:48cambodian,
00:09:51yes,
00:09:55so if we look at it and then look at
00:09:58that, okay, it's almost like
00:10:01perfect in terms of being
00:10:03identical, so soop's
00:10:06a exceptional archaeologist, i can show her a
00:10:10photo and she'll say, oh, i've seen some... like that in such and such province,
00:10:14that's an incredible knowledge to have. she
00:10:18feels very strongly about what we're
00:10:20doing.
00:10:26'it's broken the head, the food, the legs
00:10:29and where are the body of this
00:10:33feet, that is so painful to see something
00:10:37like this, it's sad, really
00:10:39sad,
00:10:43looters a lot of times they hack the statue off and they left the
00:10:47feet behind, we just feel like something
00:10:50missing, the soul are not there,
00:10:52so
00:11:25person in particular was very involved with removing
00:11:28antiquities from Cambodia, Douglas
00:11:31Latchford, he's one the greatest art thiefs in
00:11:35history many the
00:11:36and statues that went through his hands, went to museums and private
00:11:40collectors, so they're in people's living rooms, in
00:11:44the child's bedroom, up on the
00:11:46wall, now our mission is to get them out of those
00:11:50living rooms and bedrooms and get them back
00:11:52here.
00:12:02You can find Thaian Cambodian antiquities
00:12:05easily, just looking at real estate
00:12:08porn, so glossy photos the
00:12:12interior of people's homes and a photo the living
00:12:15room, and you will see in the corner there'll be camer
00:12:19antiquity. I'm Angela Chou,
00:12:23I have a Ph.D. ti Buddhist art and
00:12:26literature and I'm an independent researcher working
00:12:30now to help find looted objects that left Thailand
00:12:34and Cambodia. All the work that I do was
00:12:38volunteer work. I was actually investment banker for many
00:12:41years, so this freeze me to spend the time on things I'm interested in
00:12:45doing. Cultural institution is a
00:12:49historic phenomenon, so since the 19th century, many
00:12:52objects in places that work. col
00:12:55to places like Britain, France and the United
00:12:59States. Imagine the statue of David
00:13:03by Michelangelo in Florence, imagine
00:13:06somehow the Thai army came and took
00:13:10that statue and chopped it up and they dragged it back to Thailand, and
00:13:14now Italians who wanted to see their art had to travel to Thailand. This
00:13:18is the kind of situation we're facing.
00:13:21Since the time that the colonies became independent. "these
00:13:25countries have said these things left our country in
00:13:29illegal or unethical fashion, and now it's time for them to return
00:13:33to be once again part the
00:13:36culture and history of our country.
00:13:40so you can find a lot of objects in online museum
00:13:44catalogs, or catalogs of auction houses and
00:13:47dealers. so during the pandemic, I came across
00:13:51a brown statue in New York's metropolitan museum of..."
00:13:55Here's the statue in the Mets online catalogue and they have a
00:13:59photo of it. This is Golden Boy. It's a
00:14:03very informal nickname for a statue of a
00:14:07standing male figure with a youthful
00:14:09appearance. It is absolutely
00:14:13convincing in that sculpted to have a mass and a
00:14:16presence. And that presence is enhanced by
00:14:20the golden color of this gilded bronze. It's a famous statue
00:14:24that
00:14:25"i i would say is probably the the best or one the top southeast asian
00:14:29items that is in the collection the metropolitan museum bar in New
00:14:32York. the bron statue is about 900 or thousand years
00:14:36old and then they say cambodia, ancor
00:14:39Siemra province. the chance is
00:14:43extremely high for Cambodia and Thailand that that piece
00:14:47was illegally removed from the country. you
00:14:50basically um would have to
00:14:53assume..." that that object was
00:14:56stolen, this is just a statistical thing, so
00:15:00I tried to trace back, what do we know about that object, what
00:15:04specific spot that it came from, or who owned it in the past?
00:15:08the met hopefully provides um a little bit of of
00:15:11providence information, so this is information about who owned the statue
00:15:15before it came to the met.
00:15:19in 1988, dealer in London spink and
00:15:22son sold this statue to
00:15:37know that Spink and Sun collaborated with Douglas Latchford
00:15:41in sending antiquities illegally into the United
00:15:44States. Douglas Latchford was a
00:15:48British man who was indicted for looting and smuggling by the United States in
00:15:522019. He lived in
00:15:56Bangkok and was able to purchase items directly from
00:16:00looters in Cambodia and Thailand and then basically
00:16:03present respectable professional face to to
00:16:07the museums who really did not ask enough questions about
00:16:11how Latchford managed to get these objects.
00:16:15He had in fact so many objects flowing through him
00:16:19to London and New York that people started to say,
00:16:23you are these all
00:16:24authentic.
00:16:28So Glatchford engaged an art historian called Emma Bunker
00:16:32to help him to write three coffee table volumes about Kmer
00:16:36art. Camera art covers art in Cambodia and
00:16:39Thailand. We have excellent photographs that are
00:16:43reproduced in color. They are catalog enties with footnotes. He
00:16:47made efforts to use these books to declare that these things are
00:16:50authentic. I noticed that a
00:16:542008 book by Bunker and Latchford, they do mention
00:16:58briefly this statue which is at the Met, a
00:17:01and footnote at the back, they say this statue is
00:17:05actually from Northeast Thailand.
00:17:12the the thing about it is that the Metropolitan museum
00:17:16of art says that this statue comes from
00:17:18Cambodia from SEMR province. Then in
00:17:222011, Emma Bunker and Douglas Lotchford published this
00:17:26book, mayor gold, and they do mention
00:17:30that 11th century statue
00:17:31at the Met, which they had published earlier. It says here,
00:17:35quote, the figure was... actually found at the village of
00:17:39bangyang, lahan district where its stone base is still
00:17:43visible and not in cambodia. what
00:17:47this footnote is telling us is identifying a specific place,
00:17:51a certain village a certain district, and it says its stone base is still
00:17:55visible, mean that's quite
00:17:56extraordinary, so it
00:18:00would be miraculous really if you could go there and
00:18:03actually find the base and try to see if maybe
00:18:07did come from
00:18:08Thailand.
00:18:18Kanwang is the leader in Thailand's culture heritage repatriation movement on the
00:18:22ground.
00:18:32Thanks to Tanongsak, lot more information has come out
00:18:36uh about
00:18:37how the... was conducted in Thailand, because Tonansak went to some these
00:18:41villages and actually spoke to the villagers who were involved in the looting and
00:18:44explained exactly how these things
00:18:46happen.
00:18:53I have to translate things for him, I have to find him some
00:18:57information. I am a historian, but my focus is
00:19:01mainly on Burma, but yeah, as husband and wife
00:19:04we share information, we... we share out

00:19:39so we communicate to whatsapp, messenger,
00:19:42emails, the footnote said that the plint or the base the
00:19:46statue is still there, angela
00:19:50ระบุ ใน
00:19:51ไทย ว่า
00:19:55บ้าน
00:19:55ยางหัน
00:19:59ไทย, the problem is in the bunker book, it's not
00:20:03mentioned which province is in, so it's kind of like leaving out the state in the
00:20:07US. there could be different villages the same
00:20:09name.
00:20:20Our plan is to head out today to find the base the golden boy bronze
00:20:24statue currently at the met in New York to see if we can prove it
00:20:28came from Thailand. According to Latschwart's book, it's in a place
00:20:32called Banyang, but we're not exactly sure where the right
00:20:35banyang is.
00:20:37rubber trees or a type of rubber tree. So,
00:20:45Ban yang is very common name
00:20:50when in Thai. Ban simply means village. we Yang first means heard of this place, we google
00:20:54it and we found in
00:20:58lahan somewhere in, but then when we rechecked we
00:21:01realized maybe this b is not in
00:21:05province, virtually
00:21:08has no cambodian civilization
00:21:12intact.
00:21:35This is the problem with lot of camer
00:21:36art is that the ancorean empire spread across both
00:21:40Cambodia and large parts of Thailand, so camer art that we see in
00:21:44museums, it's not always clear whether it actually came from what is the
00:21:48modern state of Cambodia and the modern s
00:22:20which is the temple of bangyang village, it's not so far
00:22:23away from the most iconic camer style temples
00:22:27and it's not too far from the cambodian
00:22:31border, that's why we thought it's more likely for this
00:22:35base the statue to be somewhere in this province,
00:22:39it's just our gut feeling that says it should be in
00:22:42Buridam province rather than chayapur
00:22:45province, so we'll see, we don't know yet what's going to happen,
00:22:49we don't
00:24:06It was royal capital only for a couple
00:24:09decades before the royal capital moved back to
00:24:13Ancore.

00:24:40statues
00:24:40so many that
00:24:40many we are tracking down come from this temple complex and the
00:24:44area around it. one the missing statue that we
00:24:48believe is from this area is:
00:25:20We are looking for more evidence at the temple to prove it taken
00:25:24from here, sadly it suffered some the
00:25:27worst looting, especially because Latchford was so obsessed with
00:25:31Gake.
00:25:48We're working with
00:25:49the team of.
00:26:03'I think is maybe for the guardian, so
00:26:06we know the looters dug up this area and part of that area, it's
00:26:10like industrial looting, at least 40 or 50 people were
00:26:14here digging, they were either
00:26:17soldiers or local villagers, this was in the
00:26:201990s, it was very dangerous time,
00:26:24they came armed, there were other karamir groups
00:26:28in this area, all looking for treasures, all
00:26:31driven by the'. men from outside, Douglas Latchford and his
00:26:35friends, all to fill up western museums and private
00:26:39collections.
00:26:43We now have access to a tremendous amount of information from the Latcher
00:26:47family. Through years of of secret
00:26:50negotiations, we were able to get an agreement with
00:26:54Julia Ladford, the daughter of Douglas Ladchford to give
00:26:58us all the records relating to Cambodia,
00:27:02and that has been a treasure trove of information, we are looking through
00:27:06emails, we have his invoices, we have his
00:27:09receipts, we have his false provenants, we
00:27:13know now the path, many the statues that went through his hands
00:27:16took, they would go out the temple like prosect, and they
00:27:20would be taken across the border, from Bangkok, Latchford
00:27:24would typically ship it to London, so London was
00:27:28center point of activity, and then from London they went to other
00:27:31countries.
00:27:44My name is John Paul Labot, I'm a special agent with Homeland
00:27:47Security Investigations in New
00:27:49York. Homeland
00:27:53security investigations covers a full gamet of
00:27:56investigations from narcotics to child pornography
00:28:00cases to money launch. ring, we
00:28:04also investigate the theft of cultural property, trying to
00:28:08prosecute those involved and return the artifacts
00:28:10back home. so we
00:28:14learned from Brad Gordon that the Cambodians were
00:28:17extremely interested in a particular statue,
00:28:21and it was scanda a peacock. homeland security have
00:28:25identified 12 museums in the U.S.
00:28:28that have artifacts that were sourced by Douglas Lashford. We also have
00:28:32four private collectors that we know of, we have a pretty extensive collection of
00:28:35artifacts from Lashford as well. We have a list that we're going
00:28:39through systematically to recover all those pieces and
00:28:43to scand a peacock as
00:28:44well.

00:29:19in afghanistan and even an attempt in coup are just to overthrow an
00:29:23autoocrat. you've seen the
00:29:24news. essentially Israel is apartide
00:29:28state, but the newsmakers dives deeper. we have to stop.
00:29:33We take the day's biggest story and debate the issues behind the
00:29:36headlines. That's the whole point of negotiation. They want
00:29:40to stak in the governance their. We
00:29:44bring you in-depth look at the events, conflicts and
00:29:48decisions that impact us all. All of you have failed, all of
00:29:52you have failed. The
00:29:55responsibility for dealing with that falls to the United Nations Security
00:29:58Council from every corner the globe.
00:30:02If fighting continues, what will there be left to fight
00:30:06for hundreds of thousands of not millions of people are left to
00:30:10start? The newsmakers

00:31:11careful in their looting, they hacked pieces off and
00:31:31we have information that scandal on peacock may be with a private

00:31:51other than scandona peacock, we now believe there were at least 12
00:31:55other major statues taken from Grachop
00:31:57temple, nobody's been able to figure
00:32:01out the exact significance of this temple, but if all
00:32:05these could be reassembled, it would be astonishing, I think it
00:32:09would give us much better idea of what, who
00:32:12was this family, who ruled this? royal capital,
00:32:16we found lot of information that could help us to get back
00:32:20more statue, so now we're going to talk to
00:32:23luter, when we meet
00:32:27him, we will try to just go through again with him in detail what
00:32:31statues he took out of here,
00:32:35but this is not a situation that we can predict what's going to
00:32:38happen, we're dealing with people have some
00:32:42pretty, some very dark histories. and have done
00:32:46some terrible things in the
00:32:47past.
00:32:52we finally arrived in Buriram province where we're hoping the base
00:32:56the golden boy statue is
00:32:57located. we are calling
00:33:01you just to give you a bit of an update, so
00:33:05we drove 180 km to
00:33:09. wow, i'm excited too,
00:33:11i wish i could be there.
00:33:45quite plain, i think it'd be quite difficult when you think about it to
00:33:48find just one object that is low to the
00:33:52ground, but if anyone can find it, i think
00:33:56it's
00:33:58...
00:34:00100%,
00:34:05we'll keep you update with whatever comes our way, i
00:34:09can't wait, okay, good luck tomorrow, keep safe, bye, bye
00:34:13bye
00:35:15he he might not speak, so we just let the
00:35:19two guys, the village headman and go in to talk
00:35:23to him, it's all about trust
00:35:27i guess, did this before and it
00:35:30took some villages three years to
00:35:34talk,
00:35:38we'll see, i have no idea what's going to
00:35:40happen,
00:35:44okay?
00:37:16meet blue tiger, he was involved in looting for about four years
00:37:20in the 1990s and
00:37:22he um helped to loot
00:37:23pr so for
00:37:27"each the informants that we're working with, they all have code names
00:37:31to protect them and keep them safe, and we asked them, do they have
00:37:35favorite animal? um, in this case he picked tiger.
00:37:39the reason we're using code names is because looting is still going
00:37:42on. we don't want other looters to retaliate against
00:37:45them, so it's it's always
00:37:49very sensitive situation when we meet with
00:37:51louter. we're going to ask him some more
00:37:55questions about specific statues at pressecoj." which will help
00:37:59us in our
00:37:59discussions,
00:38:05it's taking him a while to get here, so maybe he's not coming, so let's

00:41:08me it's been extraordinary to be able to take words,
00:41:12just take description from a former
00:41:15luter.
00:41:20and within a month or two months be able to say, oh, this is the
00:41:24statue that was in that temple that is now sitting in New York.
00:41:30We're finding more and more evidence and I think it's just
00:41:34matter of time before it's ganda and the peacock come back to
00:41:37Cambodia.
00:41:51We're finally meeting , we're hoping to

00:50:23How are you? good to see you, yes, nice to meet you
00:50:26all, thank you for coming, long
00:50:29trip. 10 years after first hearing about
00:50:32scandown at peacock, I'm finally getting to see the
00:50:36statue with my own eyes. We
00:50:40determined it was sold to a private collector in New York, we approached the
00:50:44collector, showed some evidence that the piece had been
00:50:47imported improperly. After presenting the evidence, the
00:50:51collector decided to walk. away from the
00:50:53statue, we came all the way
00:50:57from Cambodia for the repatriation
00:50:58ceremony,
00:51:16feeling very emotional, the scanda on the
00:51:19peacock to see it here in New York. in these
00:51:23offices is just startling and to see how beautiful
00:51:26it is, it is a magnificent
00:51:27piece. i
00:51:31feel so happy because it is very important
00:51:35for us as a Cambodian to have our culture, to have
00:51:39our soul the
00:51:40ancestors, because in
00:51:44everyday life we still practice, we still wasted the
00:51:47statute.
00:51:53"This is the return the son of one the
00:51:56greatest kings in Cambodian history, and we
00:52:00know so little about his reign
00:52:03that the statue itself starts to tell us..." story about what happened a
00:52:07thousand years ago in
00:52:08Cambodia,
00:52:24we find that so much was
00:52:26lost, there's a yearning among the young generation
00:52:30to understand better and realizing that
00:52:33Cambodian art and creativity and achievements,
00:52:37something they should be proud
00:52:39of:
00:53:01i would like to see every cambodian
00:53:05national treasure to come home and for the Cambodians
00:53:09have control over the destiny of those properties and to
00:53:13decide whether they want them to be tour, whether they want them to be in
00:53:16museums, whether they want them to be back at the
00:53:18temples.
00:53:36"museums she realize that actually returning something, it doesn't have to be a zero
00:53:40some game, they're a waste, they can collaborate and form new
00:53:44endeavors, curating, conservation,
00:53:47display.
00:55:14why is it Africana only? I'm telling you
00:55:17today, they are going to

00:55:33oh, that's tabu.
