00:03:04of unvealed a major federal government initiative to transform autism care in
00:03:08Nigeria through
00:03:09of expanded specialist training, targeted investment in tercer
00:03:13institutions and the establishment of autism centers across the
00:03:16country's six geopolitical zones. Now speaking during an engagement
00:03:20with stakeholders, Dr. Alasa said President Bolatu Nubu's administration
00:03:24is investing in the human capital needed to strengthen
00:03:27diagnosis, therapy
00:03:28of and rehabilitation. services while
00:03:34of of ensuring that Nigerian families can increasingly assess quality care within the country. The minister said the initiative
00:03:37represents a significant step towards addressing
00:03:40of the nation sort shortage of highly skilled professionals in
00:03:44audiology. now the speech language therapy and also
00:03:47occupational
00:03:48therapy.
00:03:51we have day shortage of
00:03:55of ideologists, occupational therapists and speech
00:03:58therapists and we have. have increasing number of
00:04:01autistic children, children with h
00:04:05hd disorders and it's so unfortunate that
00:04:09people don't have that, cannot access the services here in
00:04:13Nigeria, people are going to Ghana to get the
00:04:16services, we do not have enough schools offering this, I've
00:04:20made, you were not
00:04:21of vice chancellor
00:04:22of before, I've called head of institutions and I've
00:04:26gotten commitment several
00:04:28of them to start this program.
00:04:32All right, so this is the conversation we'll be having this morning talking about autism, Mr. Show me,
00:04:36we know how much uh, that affects the
00:04:39of neuro of system, and oftentimes we've said, do we have enough care uh
00:04:43of it in Nigeria, you
00:04:44do we have enough hospitals, do
00:04:45of we have enough people that are well trained, not just having people, but people that are actually
00:04:49well trained, well I don't even,
00:04:53I hardly do we have any dedicated services to deal with
00:04:57autism and tr the country, I
00:05:00It's that's nonexistance um
00:05:04when you talk about autism you're looking issues right from the point
00:05:07of but the point of detection
00:05:11right up to. you know the point of um
00:05:15going into education, then you look at the social
00:05:19component, the social care component, there's also the health care
00:05:23component, so what we have currently is at least an
00:05:26initiative from the educational viewpoint, from
00:05:30the minister for education, but do not forget that you have the
00:05:34social care content, before you get to the point of education, what are we
00:05:38doing from the beginning, what's the involvement of social care
00:05:42services? caring for people with
00:05:45autism and the level of support given to parents to
00:05:49deal with that, before you get to the point of specialist care, you need to start
00:05:53from that primary level and then establish support
00:05:57services when parents are going through difficult times where they can go
00:06:00to, where they can take um like daycare centers for autistic
00:06:04children and all that before you get to this point, i think we still need
00:06:08to get oters, i understand that is not the job the minister
00:06:12for... education to deal with that aspect, but is the
00:06:15responsibility of social welfare and health, to pick it
00:06:19up right from you, very highly in
00:06:23life until when they get to the point
00:06:26of education, so but that's my viewpoint
00:06:28on this, i think we need to provide such services, if you ask me, i think it's a
00:06:32step in the right direction, knowing what parents actually go through when their
00:06:36kids have autism, but olamiday, the world health organization estimates that
00:06:39approximately one in 127 people globally had
00:06:43autism in 2021, however, Nigeria still
00:06:47lacks significant and comprehensive national data, so
00:06:51this is what we're hearing, we know that there are lot of kids that actually suffer from
00:06:55autism in Nigeria, some parents do not even know that their children are suffering
00:06:58from autism, they'll tell you is village people, not even knowing that something is actually wrong with the kid,
00:07:02but I think it's a step in the right direction if we're actually able implement it, not
00:07:06just get centers, get people that are well trained to deal with kids that have autism, because you
00:07:10need a certain kind of patience, a certain... kind of training actually to deal with those
00:07:14kids? absolutely, you know, i think um autism
00:07:18is it's a it's a cognitive blessing if you will, but we all know they exist a
00:07:22spectrum you know from lesser traits of of autism to more
00:07:26and severe traits of autism, but they are very very special children. reports are shown
00:07:30us that they are gifted in various things in maths in arts, when they are locked
00:07:33in and for lack of better phrase, they are actually locked in, it's time that
00:07:37we we utilize their very unique and diverse minds and it's
00:07:41glad to see this - at at the from the minister of education,
00:07:45because it it hinders them from learning, and if you don't know how to cognitively reach
00:07:48them scientifically with the data, you
00:07:51are you're going to have a demographic in our education system that is neglected
00:07:55because we don't understand their specific nuance needs, i think this
00:07:59is very, very welcome, and i always push and advocate for those
00:08:03who are marginalized or misunderstood in our society to be considered by
00:08:06institutions to be considered by the people who are making policies and and making
00:08:10decisions, this is very very... welcome the autism is very um it's a silent
00:08:14struggle because there are many parents who are they they've had to go out by
00:08:18themselves and and they're dealing with these children and they're not getting any help or
00:08:22support any level in terms of education in terms of welfare in terms of
00:08:26financing and so it's good to see that at the institutional level we are trying
00:08:30to understand them in order to help them and incorkate them into our
00:08:33education system successfully and i'm happy that we're actually picking this up i
00:08:37remember i was at the airport i was going to abuja and
00:08:39there was a particular kid you could see that he had autism and I just saw the
00:08:43cry the parents how they were even
00:08:45able to put him together because he was having a crisis there and I
00:08:48believe that whatever it's a blessing in this guys you know buse like
00:08:52olamide has said these people some them are very very intelligent there's also family on tiktok that
00:08:55her
00:08:56son has autism and I told you he draws so well he can actually draw
00:09:00anything and we're also hearing that we're seeing that the six geopolitical zones
00:09:03in uh you know Nigeria across Nigeria as well so we're just hoping that it
00:09:07will extend to all those people even in the rural areas as well yes no
00:09:11doubt about
00:09:12that all they made very fantastic point about the struggles of parent, yeah,
00:09:16it's not just the parents, it's the frustration experienced by autistic children
00:09:20also, in some cases, parents because of lack of
00:09:23understanding of what autism is all about and how to handle
00:09:27them, you see some parents trying to beat those kids to
00:09:31confirm to their own expectations, and well don't you think that's when the
00:09:34parents do not even know that the child is autistic, that's another thing again, some parents actually do
00:09:38not know, look, that's a major problem, particularly.
00:09:42"when you leave the elites, go to the rural areas, you see it's a major
00:09:46problem, lack of information, they do not even understand how
00:09:50to deal with it, it's frustrating for parents on one part in on
00:09:54another, in another way also it's frustrating for the children who
00:09:57felt autistic children uh that they are being
00:10:01misunderstood, they could not understand why the parents are behaving the way they're
00:10:04behaving, also the parents could not understand why the children are behaving the way
00:10:08they are behaving, at times they think is the which is from the village you." "
00:10:13exactly, that's what i i was just saying, because you hear so many stories and people are saying,
00:10:17oh my family people have done me, but do they actually go for the test? the first
00:10:21step that we're taking, the first major step we are trying to do with.
00:10:25autism so minister allows are well done, but we need to go back
00:10:29you to and but don't you think another thing should be awareness also to
00:10:33make parents actually do parents understand what
00:10:36autis autism is? i think that okay yeah go ahead i was going i was also going to
00:10:40just like you said
00:10:41you know i want to commend the grassroots and the community stakeholders they have so many
00:10:45initiatives that are being funded by parents and grassroot stakeholders i went to
00:10:49event a couple of months ago and it was it was a golfing class for children with
00:10:52autism so the people on ground
00:10:54are actually doing so much to cater to these children, to understand them, to help
00:10:58them live full, healthy and productive lives and it would be great to see a
00:11:02government meet them more than halfway, the non-governmental organizations can
00:11:06step in with a view you know through advocacy and try
00:11:10and help parents to understand lot of things, so these are some the things which
00:11:14CSOs and NGOs should be doing um with government
00:11:17support obviously yeah, but if you ask me, I believe
00:11:21that the step
00:11:22in the right direction, one the first thing we need to do
00:11:24is to make sure that these parents actually understand what autism is, if you ask me,
00:11:28I believe that it starts from there, because uh some these parents are beating their children, not even
00:11:32knowing that this is actually the struggles that they are facing uh, so it's a
00:11:36step in the right direction, we wish to hear more of this as unfolds, we'll

00:24:48inec really needs to do lot. to make sure that we get a free, fair, credible
00:24:52election in uh or an election devoid of violence, I'll say it again, an
00:24:56election devoid of violence. now when we talk about why did the EFCC phase it?
00:25:00according to the EFCC, they said it's been investigating on state finances
00:25:04since March 2026, and now the investigation concerns the
00:25:07alleged handling of approximately 11 billion. okay, and
00:25:11also the commission said that a large sudden transfer of government funds,
00:25:15but although with everything that the AFCC has said their delicate
00:25:19administration is actually saying that this is not fair, you're doing this politically to weaken
00:25:22me ahead of uh uh
00:25:24you know what's going to happen on the 15th of August, but whatever it is, my main question, Mr.
00:25:28Shomi, I bring this to you as well, like people are asking, does the EFCC actually
00:25:32have the power uh
00:25:33you know to seize the ocean accounts just ahead the election when we know that is on
00:25:37the 15th of August, almost next nine days to go, actually do you think that they are trying
00:25:41to actually win the I will answer that question by first
00:25:44posing one question, being a governor does he confer
00:25:48a right on you? to take funds not appropriated
00:25:52for a particular purpose you know and then use it
00:25:56as supposedly palliatives not in the budget and then handing
00:26:00that out two weeks. that's the issue is that
00:26:04are you bribing the electorate or what? no one knows, but you cannot use public funds
00:26:08for that. now in terms the legality the action taken by the
00:26:12EFCC, you need to go through money laundering uh
00:26:15prevention and prohibition act 2022. it's quite clear
00:26:19if you go through section 7 subsection 6
00:26:23that the EFCC has a right you to
00:26:27block any account if they suspectum unlawful activities
00:26:31going on or the kind. is about to be committed on that, they
00:26:34have that right, they can only block it for 72 hours,
00:26:38thereafter the EFCC needs to go to the courts, to
00:26:41get an extension, to get a cour order to extend
00:26:45that period, otherwise up till now, I think the EFCC
00:26:49is still in order, they may still approve the call today, show me quickly, what we
00:26:53see here is that according to the addelic he's saying that the EFCC can investigate a
00:26:57state but should not freeze the account without a judicial
00:27:01administration, but law is very clear, look, go,
00:27:04let me read, do you want me to, I was just going to take you guys over to the punch
