00:00:35The fully autonomous station was built in the wilderness, without
00:00:39access to the power grid, sewage system or GSM
00:00:42coverage. If it weren't for satellite antennas, any communication
00:00:46with the outside world would not be possible here. The station itself
00:00:50generates its own electricity and purifies water, and the ship, along with the new
00:00:53polar explorers, always brings back supplies of fuel and
00:00:56food.
00:01:00Unloading and loading is one of
00:01:03the most important activities, because without fuel,
00:01:06without equipment, without materials, without
00:01:10food, the station cannot function. When the ship reaches
00:01:13the fjord, two PTSM amphibious transporters
00:01:17are launched at the station, which approach the side of the unit to
00:01:20receive the cargo. From the ship, pallets are loaded onto
00:01:23amphibious transporters using a ship's
00:01:25crane.
00:01:29Unloading takes from several to several dozen
00:01:32transporter trips on the Land
00:01:34Ship route.
00:01:40Such unloading is probably one of the most labor-intensive
00:01:44and tiring
00:01:46tasks to do here. I spent most of the day on
00:01:50PTSI swimming to the horizon and
00:01:53to the shore with things. Very dangerous
00:01:56and exhausting work. Well, unloading
00:02:00lasted until 4:00 or 5:00 in the morning due
00:02:03to changing weather conditions, well, we had to interrupt
00:02:07the unloading and postpone it to the second stage.
00:02:11It is really hard, hard work,
00:02:14which happens day and
00:02:18night in many
00:02:19shifts.
00:02:25Glaciologists, meteorologists, and oceanographers conduct
00:02:28their research in Hornsund.
00:02:30Hydrochemists, geologists
00:02:32geophysicists.
00:02:34Many of the projects carried out are interdisciplinary and
00:02:37international. Researchers cannot do without
00:02:41the station's infrastructure. An experienced
00:02:44technical team ensures its efficient and uninterrupted
00:02:47operation.
00:02:51The technical group consists of several people,
00:02:54the head of the technical group and two technical group employees,
00:02:57a mechanic, a conservator. We all
00:03:01help each other to prepare the station for
00:03:04wintering, every day is a new
00:03:07challenge, I wake up in the morning, have breakfast, find out what
00:03:11we are doing today, whether we are installing a new incinerator, or repairing
00:03:15the PTS, and there was unloading, or I have to transport something with
00:03:18a tractor, a few pallets or something like that, often you have to
00:03:21build something, some platforms,
00:03:24help groups of scientists in the summer, so that will also
00:03:28be one of our future tasks.
00:03:37Today the weather is so bad, so we'll deal with things
00:03:41from the station, we'll go to Banachówka, then we'll deal
00:03:44with the electricity in the attic, and we'll see what happens during
00:03:48it, our basic way
00:03:52of operating is dynamic
00:03:55planning, as the weather allows us, that's how
00:03:58we work, the biggest problems here when it comes to summer
00:04:02work is the wind, the wind speed
00:04:05record was probably 50-something meters per
00:04:08second, in summer there are winds in
00:04:11gusts up to 34 to 40 meters per
00:04:14second. For many years, the station has been operating
00:04:17a 24-hour duty for 365 days a
00:04:21year, which includes three meteorologists, they
00:04:24regularly report their observations and, together with
00:04:27the technical team, take care of...
00:04:46take your weapon because we're going to Banachówka and
00:04:50we can go every time we go outside the station, we have to
00:04:54take a weapon, a flare gun, here in
00:04:58the vicinity of the station,
00:05:00it's relatively safe, bears also don't like this place because of
00:05:04the smell and the noise, we always have noise, because the generators are
00:05:07always working, so they go around
00:05:10the station.
00:05:17The station's infrastructure includes, among other things, a residential part,
00:05:21laboratories, a food warehouse, a workshop with
00:05:24power generators, and a technical
00:05:26building. This is complemented by a hangar for
00:05:30storing boats and water equipment, called
00:05:34Banachówka by the residents, and a fuel depot. The mechanic
00:05:37is considered the most important person at the station, his work
00:05:41ensures continuity.
00:06:00we need to switch the next generator for the next period, we go to check the fluid level of oil in the generator,
00:06:03agregacie,
00:06:05we will start the engine, heat it up to operating temperature, switch
00:06:09the power supply.
00:06:12The generator is the heart of the station, without
00:06:15electricity the station does not function, all devices
00:06:18are powered by electricity, including the kitchen, including
00:06:22the devices, the laboratories, one
00:06:24generator works at this time, when the other is not working,
00:06:28we can perform maintenance activities, oil changes and
00:06:31prepare the generator so that it is ready at any time to be
00:06:35started, to replace the first
00:06:38generator in case of failure.
00:06:41Now we have to wait a moment. until the generator reaches normal
00:06:44operating temperature, after reaching temperature we will notify the station
00:06:48that we will switch the power supply,
00:06:51well, we still have to wait a few minutes.
00:06:54Right by the bay there is a hangar for storing boats and
00:06:58floating equipment, as well as fuel tanks for
00:07:01the power plant. The residents of the station call this building
00:07:04Banachówka, it is from here that oceanographers, hydrochemists
00:07:08or hydrologists set out to collect data necessary for Arctic
00:07:11research.
00:07:23We have a room here that unfortunately suffered a bit
00:07:26after one of the storms, this is related
00:07:30to climate change, all
00:07:32of this was still under this protective layer
00:07:36of gabion stones a year ago, these damages were caused by really
00:07:40one of the winter storms,
00:07:42it brought with it stones, and ice, all
00:07:46of this hits with great force and rips it apart, at this moment
00:07:50it is all exposed, this is one of our tasks for this year,
00:07:54we have a lot to do, as you can see the weather is not the best, so we are returning to the base,
00:07:57we will find something to do
00:08:00indoors today.
00:08:05Maybe more blocks of ice have washed up on the shore today,
00:08:08the effect of calving, which is the melting and breaking up of the glacier.
00:08:43generator change in 5
00:08:45minutes,
00:08:48well, unfortunately this is not a favorite moment for scientists, because
00:08:51they have various devices connected, some of these
00:08:54devices need to be restarted, so if there are
00:08:58devices connected, for example, in the auk colony, sometimes
00:09:02they have to restart their devices to
00:09:06resume recording,
00:09:09the generators are powered by fuel that reaches...
00:09:43we can pump
00:09:46this fuel into this empty one, this fuel comes
00:09:50to us by ship from Poland, it is arctic
00:09:54diesel fuel, every
00:09:57year about 8000
00:10:01liters come, this is more or less the amount needed
00:10:03for the entire station to function for
00:10:07a year with a slight surplus, what is the
00:10:09level, about 165 cm, so...
00:10:12we are drawing from this now for the generators,
00:10:21hydrochemists are just beginning their summer observations.
00:10:25They collect samples of surface water to then analyze their
00:10:27chemical composition in the Hornsunck laboratory. Rainwater is subjected
00:10:31to the same analysis. However, no research will
00:10:35take place without a smoothly operating electrical
00:10:38installation.
00:10:43We have several tasks related to this electricity, which needs to be
00:10:47sorted out here. From what I see, most of these cables are
00:10:50communication cables, there are no power
00:10:54cables, however.
00:11:02anyway, we will have to sort them out in a sensible way, a large part of the cables is installed under the station itself
00:11:06and under the buildings, we have
00:11:08some foxes here, who like to
00:11:12gnaw on these cables, a reindeer often gets tangled
00:11:15in a cable, so such a cable needs to be replaced, we have to
00:11:18make connections of these cables, after all, the Polish
00:11:22polar station is located in the kingdom of nature and time...
00:11:36most of the recording devices run on electricity,
00:11:40electricity is needed for the huts for magnetic measurements or the equipment
00:11:44for recording seismic tremors, this requires
00:11:47special care from technicians, a power
00:11:50outage means an interruption in the continuity of measurements, electricity
00:11:53also means... the station or hot water in
00:11:56the tap? Water at the station is obtained in winter from snow
00:12:00and ice, in summer from nearby
00:12:02lakes.
00:12:04We have two lakes, one is a little lower, and if the
00:12:08upper one runs out of water, we pump water to the
00:12:11upper one, unfortunately due to
00:12:15global warming, there is less and less water here in
00:12:18summer,
00:12:23sometimes it happens that there is no water, usually the upper lake
00:12:27dries up and we have to draw it directly from the lower
00:12:30lake, with an additional pipeline, there is no rebellion, everyone
00:12:34has to work to get the water.
00:12:46Przemek, what's our water level like, water level is about
00:12:491 meter, no major contamination visible, the pump is
00:12:53clean, it's OK, in
00:12:57the lake we only have a pump, which from time to time
00:13:00needs to be checked for the level in the lake, so that
00:13:04it doesn't draw air. Most of the water supply
00:13:07is checked at the station.
00:13:11However, this is not the end of the route the water has to travel to reach
00:13:14the station. We pump water from the lake
00:13:18with a pump to the main
00:13:20tank, from which, through a pump
00:13:24and a filter system, it goes to the entire station, yes, we also have
00:13:28a separate osmosis filter for drinking water for
00:13:31the kitchen, as for the winter season, when the lake freezes
00:13:35and we are no longer able to draw water from there, inside
00:13:38the tank at the bottom there is a coil, which
00:13:41is heated by generators, from
00:13:45the outside we lift the lid, we throw snow, either
00:13:48with shovels or with the help of a tractor, we are polar explorers, we
00:13:52are used to extreme conditions, so... there is always
00:13:55good weather for shoveling snow. The daily
00:13:58functioning of the station, both as a result of the research carried out on it, and
00:14:02the normal functioning of scientists, generates various
00:14:05types of waste. It is less harmful today to burn them on
00:14:08site than to transport them by sea. One of
00:14:11the most important planned activities here this summer is the installation
00:14:15of a new furnace for waste disposal. This is quite a difficult
00:14:19task, because the furnace itself weighs 2.5 tons,
00:14:22so it needs to be installed in one of them.
00:14:38we'll check if we can make it
00:14:39now
00:14:42good we have okay good so
00:14:45the distance is good we still need to check
00:14:48the other one there shouldn't be a problem here we'll
00:14:52also mount a tank for
00:14:56oil, give me
00:14:57it,
00:15:00this is the main combustion chamber,
00:15:03one burner comes here, this is the second burner, which
00:15:07is supposed to burn the exhaust gases, which means we have very clean
00:15:10combustion and leave the smallest possible footprint on
00:15:14the surrounding nature, well, it's a single-phase device fortunately, which
00:15:17uses a very small amount of electricity, which is very important
00:15:21here, taking into account the entire infrastructure we have,
00:15:25each new device we install, we want
00:15:28the energy consumption to be as low as possible,
00:15:32so as not to additionally burden
00:15:34the generators.
00:15:41Next stop, technical control of the sewage
00:15:45treatment plant, this is, as far as I know, the first
00:15:48and probably the only sewage treatment plant on Svalbard, so
00:15:52we are a bit proud of it, at
00:15:54the same time a plus for
00:15:56nature,
00:15:59sewage from the entire station flows in here,
00:16:03passes through a sieve, which collects coarser
00:16:05impurities, passes
00:16:08through reactors, which purify
00:16:12it, the sludge remains in
00:16:15barrels, while clean water is discharged into
00:16:18the fjord, the sludge is dry
00:16:21and is to be additionally incinerated in
00:16:24the waste incinerator, the only thing
00:16:28we generate is a negligible amount of ash at this
00:16:30moment.
00:16:55After installing the waste incineration furnace, the next step is to install a new chimney. The whole thing constitutes a modern installation, thanks to which the station will minimize its environmental
00:16:58footprint.
00:17:11Unfortunately, we have to dispose of some of the waste here, because
00:17:15transporting it generates a similar
00:17:18emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere,
00:17:21so there is no choice, station, station
00:17:25Piotrwoła,
00:17:29listen, we're going to test the incinerator, so
00:17:32a fire alarm is possible here in the
00:17:35incinerator, so be prepared. to turn it off,
00:17:39pierwszy palnik wyłączony,
00:17:41we throw it in, and you, Tadzik, get ready to check, then we'll go outside
00:17:45right away, what the
00:17:47angle looks like,
00:17:52in the upper chamber
00:17:55800, in the lower 600, we can see from
00:17:58the outside what kind of smoke we have, the color of the smoke depends a lot on
00:18:02the incinerator settings, so we will be testing
00:18:05that now.
00:18:37This is quite a big day for us here at the station for the technical team,
00:18:41because it was one of the most important tasks this summer,
00:18:44the installation of this device, the previous incinerator served
00:18:47us for about 10 years, so
00:18:51after these 10 years it must go into well-deserved
00:18:54retirement.
00:19:00We try to be self-sufficient, of course you can't be prepared for
00:19:03all situations, but even if we lack something,
00:19:07well, we try to create it from the materials we have on site,
00:19:21I saw progress in
00:19:24the functioning of the station, in
00:19:25equipment, it is truly an
00:19:29international research platform, which serves not
00:19:33only us, today it is an international station,
00:19:47What you definitely must not do is waste
00:19:51this achievement, stopping funding for
00:19:55polar research will throw us out of this game
00:19:59and will also throw us out of this game about the future, which I
00:20:02mentioned, so you definitely must not do
00:20:05that.

00:27:08Apartments are hard to find and are expensive, that's how it is today on the real
00:27:11estate market, but that can change, demographics will
00:27:15have an impact, among other things, we will talk about that today in the Kowalski's
00:27:18Wallet magazine, Marcin Kowalski, I invite you,
00:27:20let's start,
00:27:25seniors receiving benefits will be happy, ZUS
00:27:29confirms an increase in widow's pension.
00:27:33Demographics are changing the housing market, will it affect price
00:27:36reduction? How to find a job after
00:27:40five, looking for employment is
00:27:43a challenge.
00:27:48We start our magazine with a topic concerning people who have lost
00:27:52a spouse. Widow's pension, it is already in force, but from
00:27:552027, which is quite soon, there will be new
00:27:59rules, beneficial for beneficiaries. What is it
00:28:02about? All in our material now,
00:28:05I invite you,
00:28:10we have good news for people receiving a widow's pension, which is
00:28:13a benefit that combines a family pension after a deceased spouse with a retirement
00:28:17or disability pension. A senior who this year received one benefit in
00:28:21full and 15% of the second, in the future may
00:28:25receive several hundred zlotys more. It is very important that
00:28:28from January 1, 2027,
00:28:3115 percent will be increased to
00:28:3425% according to the law. To
00:28:37receive this higher benefit, you do not need to submit any additional
00:28:41applications to ZUS, the institution will do it automatically.
00:28:44Let's see by example how much we can gain from next year's
00:28:47increase in this coefficient. When the pension is PLN 3,000
00:28:51gross, and the family pension is PLN 2,400.
00:28:54And it is precisely the pension that is paid in full,
00:28:57now we receive 15% of the family pension,
00:29:00i.e. PLN 360. The total payment is
00:29:04therefore PLN 3,360 gross. From January
00:29:081, 2027, the coefficient will increase from
00:29:1115% to 25%, so
00:29:14from a benefit of PLN 2,400
00:29:17gross, it will be PLN 600, i.e. PLN 240
00:29:20gross more per month. The total
00:29:24payment will therefore be PLN 3,600, which
00:29:27is PLN 240 more per month, i.e.
00:29:30PLN 2,880.
00:30:03they take care of, for example, children, which means
00:30:06that
00:30:10the amount of a woman's pension
00:30:12is significantly lower, this
00:30:15means that women receive significantly lower pensions than
00:30:19men. ZUS data shows that over 70% of men
00:30:23receive benefits higher than PLN 4,000
00:30:26gross, which is almost twice as much as in the case
00:30:29of women, an even greater disparity due to... pay
00:30:32we have in the group of seniors receiving over PLN 5,000
00:30:36gross, men with such a pension account for over
00:30:3950%, women only
00:30:4120%. The average pension for men after the March
00:30:45valorization is over PLN 5,312
00:30:48gross, in the case of women over
00:30:50PLN 3,662 gross, this is much below
00:30:54the average pension, which after the March valorization is approximately
00:30:58PLN 4,324
00:31:00gross, it is... on average even well
00:31:04over PLN 100 lower than a man's
00:31:08average pension at
00:31:11this moment, by introducing such an instrument as
00:31:15the Widow's Pension, it allows or enables to obtain
00:31:19additional income. Of course, not every senior
00:31:22can apply for a widow's pension. The most important criterion is
00:31:26the amount of both benefits, which cannot exceed three times
00:31:29the lowest pension. The lowest
00:31:32pension is over PLN 1,978
00:31:35gross, so the upper limit is a little over
00:31:39PLN 5,935
00:31:41gross per month. If the sum of benefits exceeds this threshold,
00:31:45the payment will be reduced by the amount by which the limit was exceeded.
00:31:49A senior who has not previously applied for a widow's pension must submit
00:31:52an appropriate application to ZUS. The application can be submitted either
00:31:56in traditional paper form at customer service
00:31:59centers, which I strongly encourage, if any
