00:01:30week's episode we got to know a
00:01:33little about KST Soekarno,
00:01:36which stands for Soekarno Science
00:01:39and Technology area, located in Cibinong,
00:01:43Bogor Regency, West Java. I've given you
00:01:46complete information, right? Who knows, maybe you want to go
00:01:50there, either for research or scientific
00:01:53innovation purposes, or just
00:01:56for a walk with your family because...
00:02:00One of the BRIN research centers is not just
00:02:03a research facility but also an educational
00:02:22on the genomic
00:02:31KST Soekarno Cibinong
00:02:34learning about was built on an area of 198
00:02:36hectares,
00:02:42initiated by the First President, Dr. Honoris
00:02:45Causa I. Soekarno, in 1961
00:02:48with the name
00:02:50Life Science
00:02:52Center.
00:02:58The development of KST Soekarno
00:03:01out that the institution is focused on managing biodiversity data,
00:03:04from physical to digital specimens.
00:03:08Research infrastructure and facilities also complete
00:03:11it, such as the genomics
00:03:15and bioengineering laboratory,
00:03:18integrated bioproduct laboratory,
00:03:22biosafety laboratory,
00:03:25greenhouse display and Innovation Convention
00:03:29Center. High performance computing
00:03:33and other supporting facilities,
00:03:38all our data becomes genomic data the science and technology area infrastructure managed by BRIN is very complete and
00:03:42representative with various research facilities within it.
00:03:52in a system that
00:04:04KST Soekarno certainly strives to
00:04:07provide facilities that can support
00:04:10research potential to become superior. First
00:04:14is the Genomics Laboratory. The Genomics
00:04:18Laboratory is one of the integrated laboratories
00:04:21owned by BRIN, where it focuses on
00:04:25biotechnology and
00:05:06There are several research activities that focus on
00:05:09the first one for DNA analysis research activities. So
00:05:12we have a PCR machine that
00:05:16can be used for DNA analysis, then there is also a lab that
00:05:19focuses on protein research and enzyme development
00:05:23in Indonesia, so we have it here.
00:05:26Then, the most common thing here is the characterization
00:05:30tool, so this floor focuses on characterizing samples not
00:05:33only from BRIN researchers but also from BRIN
00:05:37stakeholders, namely from universities and industry, they
00:05:41can be sent here. So one example is a tool
00:05:44called AAS, which is used to analyze metals
00:05:48from environmental samples, so when we have wastewater samples, we
00:05:52can analyze the metal content, for example, lead
00:05:56and CO, that can be done here. Then there is also an HPLC
00:05:59tool, we are currently conducting activities
00:06:03to analyze, for example, the content in flour
00:06:06products, we check the beta-carotene, we check the
00:06:10nutritional content, we can do that using HPLC. In addition
00:06:13to that, we also have a tool called GCMS, which allows
00:06:17us to analyze gases related to, for example, ethanol
00:06:20and other volatile gases, we can do analysis here.
00:06:24The tool behind me is called IRMS or isotope
00:06:27ratio spectrometry,
00:06:30where with
00:06:32this tool we can analyze the carbon
00:06:36and nitrogen content in a sample. With
00:06:40this tool, we can also measure age, for example,
00:06:43bone age can be traced using the
00:06:47tool behind me called IRMS.
00:06:49This
00:06:57BRIN central sequencing lab provides
00:07:01sequencing services to generate genomic
00:07:04data. So genomic data is
00:07:07the DNA sequence,
00:07:10and DNA is the blueprint of all living
00:07:13things. So this DNA sequence
00:07:16or genomic data is needed
00:07:20for various research
00:07:22purposes. So currently,
00:07:26research on basic biodiversity, food
00:07:29and agriculture, and health,
00:07:32is based
00:07:35data produced in this lab.
00:07:38For example, for identifying living
00:07:42organisms. What type of virus, what type of bacteria,
00:07:45this lab has helped
00:07:48to conduct COVID-19 surveillance, so
00:07:52it can determine the type of virus
00:07:56from the COVID variant. We are currently sequencing
00:07:59the collection of biological
00:08:02resources owned by BRIN, scientific collections,
00:08:06so at BRIN we have
00:08:09collections.
00:08:13located in INACC or Indonesia Culture
00:08:17Collection. Why is it necessary to do this? Because we want
00:08:21to know and reveal
00:08:23or uncover what potential can
00:08:27be utilized from Indonesia's genetic
00:08:30resources. So if we can get genomic
00:08:33data,
00:08:35we can know, for example, whether a medicinal
00:08:38plant will have certain
00:08:41proteins that can be useful as
00:08:45raw materials for medicines. In this sequencing lab,
00:08:50that is stored in a repository. So
00:08:54BRIN also manages a repository,
00:08:57which is a database or storage
00:09:01that is stored
00:09:04is supported by a computer
00:09:07system. We call it a national
00:09:09scientific repository. So everything
00:09:13will be stored there and also in what
00:09:16we call the Indonesian Nucleotide
00:09:20Archive. So it's
00:09:24a repository for sequence
00:09:27data of Indonesian
00:09:30biodiversity.
00:09:32In
00:09:36an effort to facilitate pathogen
00:09:39research from testing to
00:09:42clinical trials, BRIN
00:09:45has a biosafety level 2 or
00:09:49BSL2 laboratory, BSL3 and
00:09:52Animal Biosafety Level 3.
00:09:55The BSL2 laboratory is designed to handle
00:09:59microorganisms that cause disease in
00:10:02humans at various levels, while the
00:10:05BSL3 laboratory
00:10:08is for handling microorganisms that have the potential
00:10:11to infect through inhalation or
00:10:14are used to multiply microorganisms such
00:10:17as viruses, while ABSL
00:10:21is a facility for clinical trials.
00:10:40Commemorating 81 years of Indonesian independence,
00:10:43we present a series of state events,
00:10:46interfaith prayer and national prayers, commencing the
00:10:5081st anniversary of the Republic
00:10:53of Indonesia.
00:11:11A solemn reflection from the Kalibata Heroes' Cemetery
00:11:14in Jakarta, and the climax of the August 17,
00:11:172026 commemoration, the hoisting and lowering
00:11:20of the red and white flag, which is followed
00:11:24by the Red and White Flag
00:11:25Parade. The proclamation
00:11:28and lowering of the red and white
00:11:31flag. Dirgahayu, 81st Anniversary of the Republic
00:11:35of Indonesia.
00:13:23that's not all. The facilities there, when I went
00:13:27there, there was something called
00:13:31a greenhouse display, which is a glasshouse to house
00:13:34a collection of typical Indonesian plants from various islands
00:13:37and lakes from all over the archipelago.
00:13:41Then there's also something called a raiser,
00:13:45which is a research facility for fisheries
00:13:49research such as fish farming techniques. Who knows,
00:13:52maybe viewers want to start a catfish or pangasius business? You can
00:13:56learn there first. Or want to learn about
00:14:00wildlife,
00:14:01there's
00:14:04also KST Soekarno which has
00:14:07an Integrated Bioproduct Laboratory
00:14:11or ILAB. ILAB
00:14:14is the first integrated
00:14:18laboratory in Indonesia. What is meant
00:14:21by an integrated laboratory is where
00:14:25testing service processes begin with
00:14:28preparation, formulation,
00:14:30characterization, identification and quantification
00:14:34of materials, then continued with material
00:14:37formulation, so that the material can
00:14:40be transformed into a
00:14:49bioproduct. The research greenhouse is a facility for BRIN
00:14:53researchers, where it consists of a central plant
00:14:56laboratory, biosafety level
00:14:59greenhouse, aquaculture greenhouse,
00:15:03screenhouse, and limited trial plots, as well
00:15:06as a mushroom cultivation
00:15:12facility. So far, almost 94 services
00:15:16can be facilitated in the ILAB laboratory.
00:15:20Then, the users of
00:15:23this lab include
00:15:27universities and also industries,
00:15:30both domestic and international.
00:15:33The number of students doing final assignments
00:15:37or research assistants in ILAB
00:15:40reaches almost 130.
00:15:44Then, several postdoctoral fellow researchers
00:15:47also conduct research in ILAB. We
00:15:51have high hopes that all facilities in ILAB
00:15:54can be utilized well by academics,
00:15:57industry or the general
00:16:00public.
00:16:06This plant tissue culture laboratory
00:16:09is used to produce and
00:16:12develop plants using
00:16:15a small sample, which is from plant tissue
00:16:19originating from stems, leaves, roots that we
00:16:23grow outside their natural
00:16:25conditions, namely by using a growth
00:16:28medium in the laboratory that
00:16:31can support the growth of
00:16:35these plants. If these plants have already
00:16:38grown well and also have the characteristics
00:16:42or traits we want, then these plants
00:16:45can be moved to the field.
00:16:48By using this tissue culture technology,
00:16:51we can produce traits
00:16:54and characteristics of individuals that are
00:16:57consistent with their parents, so this
00:17:00technology is widely used to save
00:17:04plants that are threatened with extinction or rare plants.
00:17:08In addition, by using this technology,
00:17:11we can modify the traits of
00:17:14a plant according to what we
00:17:17want, for example, by
00:17:20modifying the plant to be more
00:17:24resistant to extreme conditions such as drought,
00:17:28flooding, acidic soil, etc.,
00:17:31or we can also increase
00:17:34the productivity of these plants, such
00:17:38as having larger fruit size, and
00:17:41we can even increase the nutrition of
00:17:44these plants, so this technology is very
00:17:47useful if we want to produce
00:17:51superior seeds from a plant.
00:19:06is focused on... For research, of course, it must be supported
00:19:10by comfortable and well-integrated general supporting
00:19:14facilities.
00:19:17This is also what is conceptualized in KST Soekarno.
00:19:19To facilitate important events,
00:19:23BRIN KST Soekarno has an Innovation
00:19:26Convention Center.
00:19:27It
00:19:31consists of a meeting hall spanning
00:19:336
00:19:38and 12 meeting rooms that can be used to
00:19:41promote research products
00:19:43of BRIN.
00:19:48Several other public facilities to support research
00:19:52have certainly been carefully prepared.
00:20:08Our facility is a facility
00:20:10that can be used for
00:20:14vaccine development, drug development and also
00:20:17to identify many biodiversities
00:20:21in Indonesia. Our facilities can not only be utilized
00:20:24by researchers who are in BRIN, but can also
00:20:28be utilized by researchers who are in Indonesia
00:20:31and regionally. We have opened facilities
00:20:35and our services
00:20:38of science services under the
00:20:42Deputy for National
00:20:42Research and Innovation Infrastructure.
00:20:49The sample preparation process
00:20:52begins in the preparation
00:20:55laboratory, we prepare the sample
00:20:58for vitrification so that
00:21:02the sample is in a frozen
00:21:04state, after that we then process
00:21:08it to be clipped
00:21:11so that it can be used and viewed under an
00:21:14electron microscope. After the sample
00:21:17is placed into the electron microscope, we can
00:21:20obtain the data through the monitor
00:21:24screen in the operating room. After that,
00:21:27we take various types of two-dimensional
00:21:31images in quite large numbers, and then
00:21:35this data is obtained and processed into
00:21:38three-dimensional data. This three-dimensional
00:21:41data forms the basis for reconstructing
00:21:45proteins, for example, to obtain their three-dimensional
00:21:48structure. The benefit of the data we obtain
00:21:51is to be able to understand the structure
00:21:55and function of, for example, the protein we want
00:21:59to study. The diversity lab services can be
00:22:03viewed on e-layanan
00:22:05sains and are open to the
00:22:10public. There are about seven collection laboratories
00:22:14for animals. Our animal collection
00:22:18comes from all
00:22:20regions of the
00:22:22Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. Some animal
00:22:26groups include mollusks, crustaceans,
00:22:29fish, reptiles, amphibians,
00:22:33birds, mammals, and insects.
00:22:36All of them are represented in
00:22:39the Bogor Zoological
00:22:41Museum collection.
00:22:54Here I am implementing the Merdeka Belajar Kampus
00:22:58Merdeka program for 6
00:23:00months at the National Research
00:23:04and Innovation Agency at the Research
00:23:07Center for Biosystematics and Evolution,
00:23:10Herpetology Research Group. The activities
00:23:13carried out here are research
00:23:16on herpetofauna in Indonesia.
00:23:20Here I gain a lot of experience from
00:23:22the great mentors, of course.
00:23:26The activities here are quite
00:23:28interesting, very interesting, even
00:23:32we learn a lot about herpetofauna in
00:23:35Indonesia and we can also get
00:23:38to know competent people
00:23:40in their fields.
00:24:03A casual chat presents information and insights
00:24:06into community life with various themes, with
00:24:10resource persons who discuss from different perspectives
00:24:13to open up horizons and inspiration. Jendela

00:24:45TVRI, the home of world football for
00:24:48Indonesia.
00:24:51South Kalimantan,
00:24:54a land rich in beauty and
00:24:57biodiversity,
00:25:00including endemic primates that are almost
00:25:03extinct.
00:25:08The dense Mangrove Forest, home to the
00:25:11proboscis monkey, which
00:25:13is increasingly threatened.
00:25:20Primates with long noses and reddish-brown
00:25:23fur are part of our
00:25:26natural heritage. The proboscis monkey
00:25:30is an endemic Kalimantan primate whose
00:25:33conservation status is currently endangered. Its presence in
00:25:37nature serves as a key species indicator that maintains
00:25:41the balance of an ecosystem due to its role as a biodiversity
00:25:44agent and forest generator. Conserving the proboscis monkey
00:25:48through habitat restoration, stop illegal hunting.
00:25:51Build a chain of concern together by honoring nature, save the proboscis monkey,
00:25:55save human
00:25:58civilization. Through mangrove forest restoration,
00:26:01we help increase the population
00:26:04of the critically endangered proboscis monkey.
00:26:07We all have a
00:26:10role in protecting them. Don't let the proboscis
00:26:32monkey become just
00:27:19we should also be proud of the realization of
00:27:22KST Soekarno Cibinong, because we now have
00:27:26one more botanical
00:27:27garden.
00:27:31Inside KST Soekarno, there is also
00:27:35the Cibinong Botanical Garden, which covers
00:27:3834 hectares
00:27:41and was established in 2002
00:27:44with the aim of slowing down the
00:27:47degradation of plant species
00:27:50diversity. KRC has a collection
00:27:53of 6,000 plant specimens
00:27:57with an ex-situ conservation concept.
00:28:00There are seven large island regions,
00:28:04namely Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku,
00:28:07and Nusa Tenggara, as well as Papua.
00:28:10In addition, besides these gardens,
00:28:13KRC also has three lakes, namely
00:28:16Lake Dora, Lake Dori, and Lake Walini.
00:28:30Animalium is a platform
00:28:33for implementing
00:28:37animal life, which is expected to
00:28:39contribute to building ecological intelligence in Indonesia's
00:28:43next generation.
