00:00:07Al-Zemmour and Al-Jaida to Essaouira, where
00:00:10the Amazighs, Phoenicians,
00:00:12by collective revenge on Arabs, and Europeans lived.
00:00:15However, the features of this cosmic city remained
00:00:19Moroccan. People talked about Dar Sultan
00:00:22and about the ancient city through
00:00:24a fenced area where it had lost its luster, and regained its brilliance
00:00:28there to give it
00:00:37We did not find any documented historical
00:00:45strength. And where the archipelago of Essaouira stands on the shores of the
00:00:49In turbulent periods of Atlantic Ocean with pride and greatness, commercial
00:00:52movement connected Morocco to the most prominent European cities from
00:00:56London to Amsterdam.
00:01:00Despite the Portuguese
00:01:03of their ancestors, they do not colonial rule over the city, it left, and the city of
00:01:06winds and seagulls remained with its architectural
00:01:08and cultural heritage and its people who
00:01:11losses belong to different days the hardship of traveling on heavenly religions, from Judaism to
00:01:14Christianity
00:01:16with the French. This and Islam.
00:01:22They lived among themselves throughout history in coexistence
00:01:24and harmony, and left to the whole world lessons
00:01:28and examples that are remembered today. In a time of division,
00:01:41a quick tour of Asilah, where the Portuguese
00:01:44colonizers lived,
00:01:47you will find kasbahs, forts, and castles, and even some
00:01:52in the morning, an early neighborhoods that tell you the past with their thick walls
00:01:54and ramparts that did not bend despite the destruction and bombardment with the most powerful weapons
00:01:58that were skillfully made in that era
00:02:01to adapt to their
00:02:05colonial ambitions.
00:02:08Despite this widespread presence in a geographical area from
00:02:11the north to the south, the Portuguese and Spanish colonization did not
00:02:16and destruction, while last long in the coastal cities.
00:02:19And when it wanted to test the immunity of the Moroccan state, unforgettable
00:02:22battles took place, perhaps the most prominent of which was the Battle
00:02:26of Wadi al-Makhazin in the year 1508.
00:02:32In which the Moroccans triumphed over the Portuguese
00:02:35and stopped their advance, so this battle remains
00:02:39immortal in the memory of Moroccans
00:02:41and to confirm that the Moroccan state possesses the pillars
00:02:45of stability and protection of nations from any enemy
00:02:48lurking for those who have come to occupy a prominent international position among
00:02:52nations.
00:02:55Despite the colonial powers' brutalization of the people of the colonies,
00:02:59Morocco today lives with its tangible and intangible heritage
00:03:02, a richness not known by other nations. The colonization left behind
00:03:06a cultural and architectural heritage that is reflected
00:03:09in most Moroccan cities that today blend
00:03:12Amazigh, European, and Arab-Islamic heritage.
00:03:18due to the factors of time
00:03:57of Taddelt, which administratively
00:04:12After the announcement of the French protectorate
00:04:35and equipment.
00:04:43Christian attacks on
00:06:01history, Zawiyas were more than just spiritual sanctuaries
00:06:05and ancient schools for cultivating Sufi sheikhs
00:06:08and scholars of Islamic sciences.
00:06:11They were also
00:06:15spiritual strongholds for those seeking inner
00:06:19peace and seeking knowledge from various religious and worldly
00:06:22fields. They were also strongholds
00:06:26for resistance and preparing mujahideen to stand against
00:06:29those who coveted any part of their
00:06:32homeland.
00:06:35These special places have preserved through time the echoes
00:06:38of centuries of whispered prayers and the sounds of worship.
00:07:00Social and economic transformations and cultural
00:07:03influences in the shadow of imposed globalization, along with the challenges
00:07:07of modern life, have led to a decrease
00:07:10in the influence of these places. To the extent that some of them have ceased to exist,
00:07:14and others have been marginalized from societal issues and completely
00:07:18isolated from cultural and civilizational
00:07:20action.
00:07:24Time passed and changed, so some of them became ruins
00:07:29others still remain beacons of knowledge, embracing
00:07:32students of knowledge with open arms and hosting
00:07:35every guest with hospitality if the guest
00:07:38needs a place.
00:07:41The fragility of the buildings and their dangerous location at the mercy
00:07:44of the rugged terrain, combined with the weakness of the helping hands
00:07:48in times of emergency, left many of these sacred shrines
00:07:52vulnerable to cracks and vulnerable to natural disasters
00:07:55and their sudden
00:07:57destructive eruptions. The library is written
00:08:01and issued.
00:08:04Nothing. These are places whose virtue is undeniable.
00:08:07That essential element and main
00:08:11entrance through which it supervises excavations
00:08:14of Morocco's past in all its aspects.
00:09:25over Morocco and the subsequent signing of the Treaty of Fez in
00:09:281912, French forces began to penetrate
00:09:32into the remote areas of Morocco and gradually
00:09:35occupy them.
00:09:38So Jihad began in all Moroccan regions to resist the occupier.
00:09:42And soon, heroic resistance leaders appeared in every
00:09:46region.
00:09:50Following in the footsteps of the Zawiya sheikhs since ancient times in repelling the Iberian
00:09:55Moroccan lands, a Sufi religious leader appeared in the Great
00:09:59Eastern Atlas who pledged to carry the banner of Jihad
00:10:02against the French invasion at the end of
00:10:061914. Ali Amhaouch managed to inflict
00:10:10several defeats on the French army, taking advantage of the effects of World
00:10:14War I and its impact on the French military
00:10:17capabilities. After his death in
00:10:202019, his eldest son, El-Mekki
00:10:24Amhaouch, took over the struggle and worked to mobilize
00:10:27and awaken his community against the danger
00:10:30of occupation. He, along with his brothers El-Mehdi,
00:10:34El-Mourtada, and El-Mostafa Aitm Haouch, and fighters from many tribes,
00:10:37fought fierce wars
00:10:38to confront the French
00:10:41colonizer. In addition to the Aït Ouchchen tribe, the Aït Skhmane,
00:10:45Aït Atta, Aït Hand, and Zayyan tribes, and Aït Ishaq united to immortalize in Moroccan
00:10:49history one of the largest and most famous anti-colonial
00:10:52battles of that period. It was
00:10:55the immortal epic known as the Battle
00:10:57of Tizi n'Tazizaout.
00:11:01During our exploratory journey to Midelt province, as we delved
00:11:05into its sections with rugged terrain, we came across a small
00:11:08village immersed in its isolation amidst its wasteland, without
00:11:11any basic amenities. It appears from
00:11:15those who live there to be called Thalaâb,
00:11:18and it belongs to the municipality of Sidi Yahya Ou Youssef, which is affiliated with the administrative district
00:11:21of Tinfif.
00:11:31In the vicinity, faint traces of one of Amhiwash's zawiyas
00:11:34appear, one of the willows, weak,
00:11:37with collapsing walls, until only the ruins of its walls
00:11:41and the remains of its doors and its crumbling towers
00:11:44remain moment
00:11:46by moment.
00:11:52We did not stay long in the hamlet before we met the witnesses.
00:13:22Sidi Ali was there, so that there would be no
00:13:26confusion for
00:13:30the listener or viewer, for
00:13:34Sidi Ali Amhaouch, about whom we are speaking, is not Sidi Ali Amhaouch
00:13:37whose tomb overlooks Ait Taghsalin or
00:13:40who is in the area called Tintaghsalin.
00:13:43He is Sidi Ali Amhaouch who is
00:13:45in the Taghsalin area or Tintaghsalin
00:13:49is the grandfather of Sidi Ali Amhaouch, about whom we are speaking,
00:13:53and the origin
00:13:55of the Ali family dates back to Sidi Yahya and Youssef
00:13:59and his son Sidi El Mekki El Mahachi, who
00:14:02was the leader of the Battle of Azizaout, and he descended with three
00:14:06caravans, Si Moulay Hamdou El Hassan El Sebai, urging
00:14:09Jihad, and he praised in his writings Sidi
00:14:13Ali Amhaouch, who belongs in his origins to Sidi Yahya
00:14:16and Youssef, and the tomb of Sidi Ali Amhaouch is located in the area
00:14:22belongs to the region of
00:14:25Beni Mellal, and three caravans to the
00:14:28region of
00:14:34ruins that add to the heart's ailment sorrow for those who once had
00:14:37a guiding light and a protective
00:14:39homeland.
00:14:42We stood questioning her, and it was as if her state of being answered, speaking of
00:14:46the epic of Tazizaoute and of the types of sacrifices
00:14:49and heroic deeds, and the fierce battles between the Atlas warriors and the armies
00:14:53of the occupier, who suffered great losses and heavy
00:14:56casualties in lives
00:15:00Despite the military imbalance between the two sides, the fighting
00:15:04spirit of the resistance fighters was not broken.
00:15:07The defeat forced them, with their limited
00:15:10capabilities, to circumvent the usual rules of war
00:15:13used by the enemy to overcome their weakness, so they decimated
00:15:17dozens of its soldiers and officers and endured the French
00:15:20siege in their rugged mountainous region,
00:15:23and defended with honor,
00:15:27hunger and thirst, refusing
00:15:29to surrender.
00:15:32And as is the custom of the Western occupier in its brutal expansionist wars
00:15:36throughout history, it uncovered another face it hides behind
00:15:39the mask of protection and claims of concern for the future of peaceful
00:15:42peoples. So it resorted to its barbaric methods that it usually employs
00:15:46in occupying peoples
00:15:49the locals through their extermination by bombardment with
00:15:52planes and dropping bombs on houses, markets,
00:15:55and gatherings, relying on that to tighten
00:15:59the siege on them to force them to surrender
00:16:02and occupy their land by force, no matter what
00:16:05the cost.
00:16:09And under this escalation of pressure and threat, the lives of
00:16:12many residents of all ages were lost.
00:16:15And the horror of this cruel
00:16:18inhuman aggression left no choice for leader El Mekki Amhaouch
00:16:22but to abandon the armed struggle and surrender in the end
00:16:26to spare the lives of the residents and the led
00:16:28legions.
00:16:32The people performed well in the incident of Tazizaoute and were known
00:16:35afterwards for their good deeds.
00:16:38The French occupier used all available means
00:16:41to destroy everything that could
00:16:44help the resistance fighters inflict
00:16:48on the enemy.
00:16:52So even these people, whether Sidi
00:16:55Tayeb or Maashi or Sidi bin Hamad
00:16:59or all the resistance fighters or Iskenti
00:17:02and also Sidi Mohamed El Hajj El Telfrawti
00:17:06and also Sidi Mohamed El Hajj El Imam and all those who resisted,
00:17:09it is enough that they resisted and defended their land and their
00:17:13homeland.
00:18:07A reconciliation that greatly affected its memory and changed
00:18:11its geography and left a deep transformation in its historical
00:18:14course.
00:18:17Due to a sudden factor similar to occupation in its
00:18:20violence, from the action of rampant nature affecting the stability
00:18:23of places, a torrential flood resulting from seasonal
00:18:26rains struck the building of the zawiya adjacent to the Aghrout valley,
00:18:29sweeping away its courtyard and destroying its foundations
00:18:33and what it carried of arches
00:18:34and roofs.
00:18:38And its library, with its treasures of manuscripts and precious
00:18:42rare books, was not spared from being swept away, as the storm buried them
00:18:45under piles of rubble.
00:18:48There was a large library under its ownership,
00:18:52but
00:18:55and neglect,
00:18:58it was lost with the floods that came to
00:19:02three caravans, and the remains of the zawiya are still there
00:19:06today.
00:20:51And the zawiya of Sidi Ali Amhaouch, after it
00:20:55was destroyed by the floods. After the death
00:20:58of Sidi Ali Amhaouch and the Battle of Tazizaout, it turned into
00:21:01an area called today Moulay Ahmad, and the zawiya is still there
00:21:05standing, and those who arrive
00:21:09and wayfarers are fed there.
00:21:12And they still preserve all those
00:21:15rituals and matters related to the Darqawiyya
00:21:18Zawiya, to which the people of that
00:21:22region belong.
00:21:28And from one source to another, we headed to the Zawiya of Moulay Ahmad,
00:21:32hoping to penetrate the veil of silence that envelops it, so that we may gain
00:21:36insight into what it may conceal
00:21:38from
00:21:40that which barely reveals its abode to the public behind the brick curtain that conceals
00:21:44its seclusion on the summit of Mount Moulay Ahmad and further enhances
00:21:47its hiddenness from view.
00:24:52The grave is when the grave is beautiful.
00:25:54When Hassan Amhaouch and his family came to this place
00:25:57from distant and wild lands, they had already visited the shrine of Moulay Ahmad,
00:26:01the sheikh of the zawiya.
00:26:40sources about the life of this scholar, other than what
00:26:43the people of the region transmit about his only piece of information
00:26:47regarding his Ouazzani
00:26:47origin.
00:26:52The ignorance of the residents about the biography of Moulay Ahmad does not mean at all their ignorance
00:26:56or lack of interest in the history of their region
00:26:58and its prominent figures.
00:27:02The memory of Tazizaoute, which marked the history

00:27:19inherited tradition is considered by the guests of the place
00:27:22a commemoration of its glorious memory so that the grandchildren
00:27:25do not forget their past

00:27:29ancestors. During the three days of the season, the attendees
00:27:32are engaged in prayer, Quran recitation,
00:27:35and prophetic invocations and remembrance. And they do not miss
00:27:39narrating the stories of the heroic martyrs
00:27:41as a reminder of their heroism
00:27:49and courage. Seven
