00:01:50We can actually fill this entire space up with qubits. That's
00:01:53That's how we get to a million in in the palm of your hand. It's quite
00:01:57quite heavy. It's heavier than you you would think. When everyone pushes
00:02:01pushes you off from the start line, line, what's going to be going through through your mind? My mission is
00:02:05is to reach the finishing line, to to be the first, to be the best.
00:02:09best. Once we get into the vacuum vacuum of space, you switch to nuclear
00:02:13nuclear and that will give you an
00:02:14an exhaust speed incomparable to
00:02:17to fire, which means half the time
00:02:19time to Mars. It offers a giant leap
00:02:29leap forward from today's computing,
00:02:32computing, and it's driving one of of the biggest technology races of
00:02:36of our time. I'm in Denmark taking
00:02:38taking a look at quantum. And here
00:02:41here in Longview, just outside the
00:02:43the Danish capital, I'm getting a
00:02:45a rare look inside Microsoft's largest
00:02:47largest quantum lab. What has scientists
00:02:49scientists and engineers really excited excited about quantum computing is
00:02:53is that it has the potential to solve solve really big problems that would
00:02:57would take conventional computers computers hundreds, thousands and
00:03:00and even millions of years. That
00:03:03That could open up materials, research,
00:03:05research, drive drug discoveries
00:03:07discoveries and speed up code breaking.
00:03:10breaking. It's still an emerging
00:03:12emerging technology, but some are
00:03:14are optimistic that a quantum revolution
00:03:16revolution could lie just ahead. We believe it's years, not
00:03:20not decades. It's years. There's There's a great deal of new solutions
00:03:23solutions that will come out of this this work. Microsoft's approach to
00:03:27to quantum computing is fundamentally fundamentally different to the other
00:03:30other tech giants. So I've come here
00:03:32here to understand just how it works.
00:03:36works. So this is the materials lab. lab. It's developing what's known
00:03:40known as topological quantum computing. computing. There are several robots
00:03:43robots here. So so it's really this
00:03:46this UFO shaped systems. Here scientists
00:03:48scientists are fabricating the materials
00:03:50materials behind Microsoft's quantum
00:03:53quantum chips and the use of AI has has speeded up development. This
00:03:57This is really where we are growing
00:03:59growing our semiconductor and superconductor superconductor on our wafers. Those
00:04:02Those atoms that hit the wafer surface,
00:04:05surface, they create this perfectly
00:04:07perfectly crystalline material layer.
00:04:09layer. Our computers, tablets and and phones run on code made up of
00:04:13of bits. At its heart, a simple combinations
00:04:17combinations of the values 0 or 1.
00:04:191. But quantum computing works differently.
00:04:22differently. Its building blocks blocks are non-binary units called
00:04:26called qubits, formed from strings strings of one and zero. And everything
00:04:30everything in between all at the
00:04:31the same time, which in theory makes
00:04:34makes data processing much, much
00:04:38much faster. However, qubits are
00:04:41are notoriously unstable. Welcome Welcome to Microsoft's clean room.
00:04:45room. Making them reliable and durable
00:04:47durable enough to do useful computations computations that are error free
00:04:51free is a big challenge facing the
00:04:53the whole industry. We're doing several several rounds of lithography, and
00:04:57and we have several different material material layers that we are patterning.
00:05:00patterning. This quantum chip has
00:05:03has eight qubits. The qubits themselves themselves live right here in this
00:05:07this chip. One qubit is 1/100 of
00:05:09of a millimetre. We can actually actually fill this entire space up
00:05:13up with qubits. That's how we get get to a million in the palm of your
00:05:16your hand. Can I have a look at it? it? Absolutely. Please. OK. It's
00:05:19It's quite heavy. It's heavier than
00:05:21than you would think. This is. Majorana
00:05:24Majorana 2. It's second generation
00:05:26generation chip. Majorana 2 has just
00:05:28just been revealed and has 12 qubits,
00:05:31qubits, which the firm says are now
00:05:33now longer lasting and more reliable.
00:05:38reliable. For the magic ingredient, ingredient, Microsoft claims it's
00:05:41it's hunted down an elusive subatomic
00:05:44subatomic particle called a Majorana.
00:05:46Majorana. Research that's taken it
00:05:50it two decades. Some physicists in
00:05:52in quantum computing experts have have argued, however, that the tech
00:05:56tech giant's conclusions are built built on unproven particles and flawed
00:06:00flawed data analysis. But Microsoft
00:06:03Microsoft stands by its results the
00:06:06the more qubits, the more powerful powerful the quantum computer. And
00:06:10And some rivals have already surpassed
00:06:12surpassed thousands of them. However,
00:06:14However, Microsoft hopes its technology
00:06:17technology can leapfrog other systems. systems. We believe that a high scale
00:06:20scale quantum computer that works works well has to have a system of
00:06:24of qubits that are small, they're they're fast, and they're accurate.
00:06:27accurate. You must have all three. three. There's other computer designs
00:06:30designs for those where you'd actually actually need an entire football
00:06:33football pitch to actually fit a
00:06:35a million qubits. And this is where
00:06:38where those quantum chips are placed
00:06:41placed below the chandelier, like like cooling device. You need to to have qubits there. You need to
00:06:45to have the control electronics there. there. Then you need this system
00:06:49system here. To function. Quantum
00:06:52Quantum machines need extreme cold. cold. It is colder than outer space.
00:06:55space. You can think of kind of a
00:06:57a zero Kelvin is absolute zero temperature
00:07:00temperature and we are 16.4 milli milli Centigrade above that temperature.
00:07:04temperature. Newer versions of the the chips are continuously being
00:07:07being tested, with the aim of adding adding more qubits. You need to have
00:07:11have enough of those that you can can actually do meaningful calculations,
00:07:14calculations, but at the same time time you need to have low error rates.
00:07:17rates. Now we're really kind of looking looking how do we scale that first
00:07:20first to hundreds and then thousands
00:07:23thousands and beyond. That could
00:07:25could pave the way. The firm says, says, for a quantum computer that
00:07:29that can solve commercially useful useful problems within the next three
00:07:33three years. Creating a new form form of computation, a new type of
00:07:37of computer that just doesn't happen happen very often. Once in a generation.
00:07:41generation. And I'm convinced that that just like the transistor is is incredibly important today and
00:07:45and will be in the future, so will
00:07:47will quantum computers. We're not
00:07:49not there yet, but it could offer
00:07:52offer huge promise if the hope can
00:07:55can live up to the hype.
00:08:09Soapbox racing it's been around
00:08:12since the 1940s. Kids, homemade cars
00:08:15cars and a dream. All for the love love of going downhill faster than
00:08:19than the next racer. Fast forward
00:08:27forward to now. And this is the Red
00:08:31Red Bull Soapbox race. London. Over

00:08:42chaos jumps, obstacles and builds builds that would blow the 1940s
00:08:461940s kids minds. But here's the
00:08:50the thing those old wooden crates, crates, they're long gone. What's
00:08:54What's replaced them is something something else entirely. The builds
00:08:57builds of today are in a completely completely different league. We're
00:09:01We're talking about powerful suspension, suspension, computer aided designs
00:09:04designs and some seriously smart
00:09:06smart steering systems. They have
00:09:13have to be under 80kg, be no longer
00:09:16longer than 3.5m and be powered by
00:09:18by nothing more than a push in gravity.
00:09:22gravity. So no engines, no batteries, batteries, just straight up physics.
00:09:25physics. And yes, this is a soapbox.
00:09:29soapbox. I told you. The teams are
00:09:35are judged on creativity, showmanship showmanship and speed. So not only
00:09:38only do they need to look good, they they need to put on a performance
00:09:41performance and finish the race quickly.

00:10:15to this stage and an after school
00:10:18school club cutting, grinding, welding
00:10:20welding and riveting in a workshop.
00:10:23workshop. We decided to base the
00:10:25the car off a Ferrari F1 1950. I I designed a whole entire 3D model
00:10:29model of the whole thing. What can can you tell me about this braking
00:10:31braking system? OK. So it's salvaged salvaged from a bike handle, right?
00:10:35right? We connect to a long cable cable to the back of the axle. There's
00:10:38There's a brake disc in the back. back. Then we've got the steering steering system. What we decided
00:10:41decided to do, we just had two steel steel rods connecting to the wheel
00:10:45wheel pivots. So you can just very
00:10:46very easily turn it from here. The
00:10:49The suspension we put on the front front because the front's going to
00:10:52to be the first thing that hits the the ground once we get off the ramps ramps in the race, we don't want
00:10:56want it to break down midway. So So yeah, suspension should help out
00:10:59out a lot with that. So yeah, hopefully
00:11:01hopefully we win. What can I say?
00:11:03say? I was more of a hands on person person making sure all the metalwork
00:11:06metalwork pieces are fit together, together, measured and using tools tools and the angle grinder and the
00:11:10the workshop to actually cut things
00:11:13things up. When everyone pushes you
00:11:16you off from the start line, yes. yes. What's going to be going through
00:11:19through your mind? Oh, to reach the
00:11:21the end line then because my mission
00:11:25mission is to reach the finishing finishing line to ensure we get the
00:11:28the best marks, to be the first,
00:11:30first, to be the best. Do you feel feel any pressure? Oh, no. I don't
00:11:34don't feel pressure. The pressure
00:11:34pressure is on the wheels. We are
00:11:38are the youngest competitors as you you know, future engineers. Ultimately,

00:16:12When I started this project, I looked looked at all of the different manufacturing
00:16:16manufacturing technologies available available and I couldn't find any
00:16:18any that would be able to be flexible flexible and agile enough to do what
00:16:22what I wanted, which was to be able able to make a unique product for
00:16:24for each person. So I decided to to start taking 3D printers apart,
00:16:28apart, putting them back together, together, and built one myself. So
00:16:32So this is one printer in front of of us, but give me a sense of the
00:16:35the scale of your operations. How How many printers do you have and
00:16:38and what makes them special? This
00:16:40This is our printer. But in our facilities facilities in Birmingham we actually
00:16:43actually have a very large one of
00:16:46of these which has 352 depositing
00:16:48depositing nozzles and is able to
00:16:51to make over 500,007 layer personalised personalised gummies every single single day. So I think in total we
00:16:55we probably have close to 300 printers, printers, all of which are designed
00:16:58designed and built from scratch by
00:17:00by my own team. Can you just describe describe what it is I'm seeing here?
00:17:04here? I mean, there's a lovely green
00:17:07green looking substance being printed
00:17:08printed from a 3D printer. Absolutely.
00:17:11Absolutely. So inside that printer
00:17:13printer we have a preformulated set set of ingredients. This specific
00:17:17specific one is vitamin C and D3
00:17:18D3 from a vegan source. And the flavour flavour of this product is green
00:17:22green apple. What we do in the factory
00:17:24factory is we use that same technology
00:17:26technology to layer individual ingredient
00:17:28ingredient formulations one on top top of another, allowing us to create
00:17:31create a limitless number of combinations combinations that are uniquely suited
00:17:34suited to an individual. But do we
00:17:38we actually need supplements? The The answer is it depends. While some
00:17:41some of us may have deficiencies deficiencies without medical advice,
00:17:44advice, it can be hard to know what what to take. I think the number number one thing is thinking has
00:17:48has there been a clinical trial in in humans showing that whatever I'm
00:17:52I'm being sold can lead to a health
00:17:53health gain that I want? And if there there hasn't, I'd say probably not
00:17:57not worth spending your money, but but there's literally thousands of
00:18:00of different products and strategies strategies on the market. So my principle
00:18:02principle is very much like narrow narrow that choice down to something
00:18:06something that actually has got clinical clinical data behind it. Ask the the companies if they're selling
00:18:10selling you something. They should should be able to provide you the the clinical trial to show that health
00:18:13health benefit and make sure it's it's the exact formulation. And in
00:18:17in terms of knowing then what you you as an individual need. Is there there a risk that people are taking
00:18:21taking their health into their own own hands, rather than getting advice
00:18:24advice from, say, a doctor or medical medical professional? Yeah, look, look, that's a really good question.
00:18:27question. And I think it's so, so so important. And certainly whenever whenever someone sees me at the Gut
00:18:31Gut health clinic, I always recommend, recommend, you know, if you're having
00:18:34having gut issues, go to your GP GP straight away. They'll check off
00:18:37off a few things because sadly, for for example, a lot of digestive issues,
00:18:40issues, you know, it can mask other
00:18:42other more sinister conditions like
00:18:45like bowel cancer, ovarian cancer cancer or inflammatory bowel disease.
00:18:49disease. There's now an increasing increasing awareness that some supplements
00:18:51supplements could do more harm than than good. There are many ingredients
00:18:55ingredients which, if taken too much much of, can have hugely negative
00:18:58negative impacts on day one. In healthy healthy humans, when we're asking
00:19:02asking questions about things like like are you trying to conceive? conceive? Are you pregnant? A bunch
00:19:05bunch of ingredients will be removed removed from the options so that
00:19:08that the consumer doesn't get something something that could potentially
00:19:11potentially be damaging or dangerous
00:19:12dangerous for them. But as the longevity
00:19:15longevity industry booms, a challenge challenge for consumers is ensuring
00:19:17ensuring that products like these these are evidence-based and that
00:19:21that any supplement should not be be taken as a substitute for a healthy,
00:19:24healthy, balanced diet. With so much much choice out there, it's important
00:19:28important to remember that to protect
00:19:29protect our health, we should still still prioritise eating well. Exercise
00:19:33Exercise and quality sleep. MUSIC
00:19:47MUSIC It It might seem like a sleepy industrial
00:19:50industrial estate in southern England, England, but this place is all about
00:19:53about speed now. Not down here. Up
00:19:57Up there. This is Sunbird, a new
00:20:01new type of rocket that could one one day move things around space
00:20:04space a whole lot quicker. And while while these are just a concept for
00:20:08for now, the tech needed to make
00:20:09make them a reality has had its first
00:20:12first successful test right here
00:20:14here back on earth. We want to be
00:20:18be able to lean into a propulsion propulsion system where once you're
00:20:21you're in space, the fuels are available.
00:20:24available. At the moment. Trips to
00:20:26to and around space, including the
00:20:28the Artemis mission to the moon involve
00:20:30involve burning big tanks of fuel. fuel. But engineers here at pulsar
00:20:34pulsar are testing something different
00:20:36different using nuclear fusion. The
00:20:39The reason rockets right now are are so big is because when they launch
00:20:42launch from the ground, they have have to carry all the fuel with them.
00:20:46them. What we want to achieve is
00:20:48is a smaller rocket. So the smallest smallest possible rocket can leave
00:20:52leave the ground using combustion combustion fire, which it will do
00:20:56do always because it's the right right propulsion system in the atmosphere.
00:20:59atmosphere. But once we get into into the vacuum of space, you switch
00:21:02switch to nuclear and that will give
00:21:04give you an exhaust speed incomparable
00:21:07incomparable to, to fire. So we're
00:21:09we're looking at a specific impulse
00:21:12impulse of about 13,000 seconds,
00:21:14seconds, which means half the time time to Mars. Nuclear fusion occurs
00:21:18occurs when the middle bits of two two atoms are forced together to
00:21:22to release extreme amounts of energy. energy. It's what powers our sun.
00:21:25sun. Scientists have been trying trying to recreate this process for
00:21:28for a long time, and there have been been some big steps forward. The
00:21:31The UK's Atomic Energy Authority Authority has even suggested it could
00:21:35could be on the nation's power grid grid by the 2040s. But fusion hasn't
00:21:39hasn't been used for interplanetary interplanetary travel, at least not
00:21:43not yet. Earlier this year, a key
00:21:45key part of it was shown it could
00:21:47could work right here in this room.
00:21:50room. Now we developed the first
00:21:53first exhaust infrastructure for
00:21:55for a fusion rocket ever, and we
00:21:57we achieved the first plasma inside inside it. Lots of pressure at that
00:22:01that moment. Huge pressure. But this
00:22:04this is what happened. Yeah. Shall Shall we play? Let's play it. And
00:22:08And here's first plasma. Wow. There's
00:22:15There's some complicated physics physics going on here, but essentially
00:22:19essentially special atoms stored stored in the engine are made so
00:22:21so hot they become no longer a solid
00:22:23solid liquid or gas. But the fourth fourth state of matter called plasma.
00:22:27plasma. This soup of highly charged charged ions and electrons is then
00:22:30then forced out through a narrow narrow exhaust, creating massive
00:22:34massive forward thrust. And to be be actually hold the plasma in the
00:22:37the structure of the exhaust where where it should be, was I mean I
00:22:41I mean really we were very lucky lucky to have achieved it. This test
00:22:44test had to be done in space like
00:22:47like conditions here on earth. And
00:22:49And that's where this contraption
00:22:51contraption comes in. So you're creating
00:22:55creating a little pocket of space space here in your warehouse. Exactly
00:22:58Exactly right. Yeah. So we suck all all the air out of this using a bunch
00:23:01bunch of really interesting expensive expensive pumps. But the upshot is, is, yeah, you remove as much of the
00:23:05the air as you possibly can and that that mimics the vacuum of space.
00:23:09space. So this is an exhaust system system for Sunbird. It's basically
00:23:12basically a large array of very powerful powerful electromagnets. And they're
00:23:15they're there to actually form the
00:23:17the plume of the rocket as it leaves leaves the engine. And so to drive
00:23:21drive those, you need some fancy fancy high power power supplies.
00:23:24supplies. You need some quite fancy fancy gas feeds to make sure that
00:23:28that propellant is fed through at at the right rate. And of course
00:23:32course you need the vacuum chamber. chamber. Otherwise none of it can
00:23:34can work. And of course it's quite
00:23:36quite echoey as you can hear. And And that's because you have to make
00:23:39make sure there's nothing else in in here. Yeah, exactly. So its job
00:23:42job is to mimic empty space. So we we try to keep all other equipment
00:23:45equipment in the chamber to an absolute absolute minimum. Spotted something
00:23:48something in the corner there. Yeah. Yeah. Normally you don't want little
00:23:50little bits of plastic sitting around
00:23:52around the vacuum chamber, but filming filming Sunbird was not easy. And
00:23:56And we actually found one of the the best ways to get footage of it
00:23:59it was just to stick a GoPro to the the inside of the chamber. Oh, and
00:24:02and what's. Happened to that GoPro? GoPro? The GoPro is not very happy.
00:24:05happy. The memory card survived, survived, but the camera did not.
00:24:09not. The team here says this successful
00:24:12successful test is a major breakthrough, breakthrough, but there's still a
00:24:14a long way to go and a lot more tests tests needed. Something that will
00:24:18will keep scientists here in pulsars
00:24:20pulsars control room busy. Sunbird
00:24:22Sunbird is something can take us us to Mars or the moon, and then
00:24:26then it's going to change the industry industry very dramatically. What
00:24:28What do you want to be doing in the the future when it comes to this this space? So it's really good to
00:24:32to feel like we are working on something something which is going to have
00:24:35have a big impact. And I think I I will just stay in this industry industry and then I will see missions
00:24:39missions to Mars and then I will will see hopefully maybe one day
00:24:41day I will be there as well. It's
00:24:44It's not just happening here. Avalanche Avalanche energy is developing its
00:24:47its own version of a fusion powered powered spacecraft, while Princeton
00:24:50Princeton Satellite Systems in the the US is working on a deep space
00:24:54space propulsion technology called called Starfire. And with space agencies
00:24:58agencies and the space industry's industry's bigger and bolder plans plans for a base on the moon and
00:25:02and humans on the surface of Mars, Mars, humanity will need rockets
00:25:05rockets that keep up with its ambitions. ambitions. What the technology is
00:25:09is telling us that this is what we
00:25:11we do. We. We evolve and we. We build
00:25:16build these technologies which are are available to us and we leave
