00:01:51country will host
00:01:51of the 22nd edition
00:01:53of the World Athletic Championships in
00:01:56in 2029. Now, this is the first
00:01:57of time Africa is hosting such a historic event. despite producing
00:02:01some
00:02:01of the sports biggest stars. Kenya's president William Ruto welcomed
00:02:05this announcement, saying, and I quote, this is Kenya's moment,
00:02:09Africa's moment, and victory for generations of athletes who've made
00:02:13our nation synonymous with excellence on the track on the
00:02:17of road and cross
00:02:18of country. Well, this East African country is one
00:02:20of the most successful in the history
00:02:22of the world championships with 72 gold medals. It's
00:02:27of athletes have also bagged 38 Olympic goals. most
00:02:30of them in the middle and long
00:02:32of distance of events. now Nairobi previously bit to
00:02:34in stage the
00:02:35in 2025 event
00:02:36but lost out to Tokyo with lack of adequate
00:02:39stadiums as the key weakness. Now here's what World Athetics
00:02:43President Sebastian Coe had to say: taking our
00:02:47championships to
00:02:48of Africa for the first
00:02:50of time will be historic. Nairobi has presented a
00:02:53com compelling and an emotional bid. This
00:02:57is fast growing, dynamic, modern. metropolis that serves as the
00:03:01economic, cultural and political hub of East
00:03:05Africa. It was important that the World Championship should come to
00:03:09Africa, when
00:03:11of we had the right host, the right bid, and the right
00:03:15circumstances. Nairobi has demonstrated
00:03:18emphatically that this is their moment to supercharge the
00:03:21development of our sport in Kenya and across
00:03:25Africa, leave leaving a compelling
00:03:28legacy that... as a continent,

00:04:57of is kenyan sprinstar Ferdinand Omanyala, is
00:05:00of Africa's 100 meter record holder. I began by asking him about the
00:05:03significance of this selection and whether he expected it at
00:05:07all. I'm not, I'm not surprised, but I mean
00:05:11it was, it was a hard. competition to go into i
00:05:14mean to bid for the world championship, we tried against uh
00:05:18Tokyo last year, we didn't get it, but this year again we were
00:05:21going against like very formidable countries, london
00:05:25hosted the world championships i think a couple of times, munich definitely
00:05:29one the big cities in the world, but now if you
00:05:33put that aside and you look at now the the
00:05:36culture and what brings
00:05:39you know the fun zone and the athletics vibe around the country? "I think
00:05:43Kenya is stands out the most out of this country, so there's that part that
00:05:46was still you know having a lot of weight and carrying lot of weight, and
00:05:50then the fact that Africa has never hosted a major global
00:05:54championship before, we stood a higher chance having
00:05:58that we bid last year to host the Tokyo and then we
00:06:02didn't get it, so we I'm sure the team was more experienced this
00:06:05time on how to beat and what to put forward, so I
00:06:09was i was really in faith that you're going to get it and I'm glad that we did." so are
00:06:13you feeling the pressure? the fans will be there, your family will be there, everyone will be
00:06:17watching in 2029, i don't it's 100 meters or you want to do something
00:06:21else, how do you start preparing for that? i don't feel any pressure,
00:06:25mean competing at home is always a privilege and
00:06:28um one thing about me is there's always a level of
00:06:32excitement and adrenaline rush that comes to with
00:06:35competing at home and i'm glad that of course uh not
00:06:39that i all my best performances are here but um most
00:06:42them are in Kenya and preparation
00:06:46starts now, what are your thoughts about the capability of
00:06:50Kasarani, the stadium in Kenya that would host this
00:06:53potentially uh compared to other stadiums that have
00:06:57hosted world championships that you've participated in, does Kenya have, does
00:07:01Nairobi have what it takes, what needs to be improved? um, I'm happy
00:07:04that the stadium is doing, there's an overhall of construction going
00:07:08on and um an upgrade as well, so that's that gives
00:07:12us better chance to host even
00:07:15better um championship, but definitely Kasarani has
00:07:19everything it takes, it does all it takes, I'm sure with this bit of
00:07:22course the world athletics and all the stakeholders are going to support
00:07:25this preparation towards the world championship,
00:07:29so expecting world class equipment, let's say like the track
00:07:33to be laid there within hopefully in less than year or
00:07:37two so that we can be ready for that, but of course
00:07:40Kasarani is always a stadium
00:07:43that uh times are run fast there you
00:07:47a high altitude area and post sprinters we're
00:07:51expecting to have very fast times uh come
00:07:542029 beyond kenya what what does
00:07:58this mean for the African continent athletics
00:08:00infrastructure what do you think what do you see this
00:08:04sparking once Nairobi manages uh to
00:08:07hopefully host successful world championship? definitely
00:08:11it will give us show the world that what that that africa is capable
00:08:15of hosting it, but just recently botsuana hosted the world
00:08:19relay championships and it was really really good and we are
00:08:23having more events come to Africa as well, so having Kenya
00:08:27hosting the World Championships in 2029 definitely is something that
00:08:30will be put into history books and we hope that we can be hosting it
00:08:34even later in the coming years and it will be
00:08:38a big boost to us and the generations to come because I remember I got a...
00:08:42lot of inspiration from the under 18 that was posted in
00:08:452018 2019 i think the about and i can
00:08:49imagine what this gonna this going do to the coming to the up and coming
00:08:53athletes like they are going to see all these stars coming into the country
00:08:57and they'll be having this chance to watch them warm up to
00:09:01watch them go and compete you know that will be huge
00:09:04motivation factor for the generation that's
00:09:08coming and now to south africa where police have warned
00:09:12women against walking alone in Eastern Johannesburg after another
00:09:15body was found near the Kempton Park suberb. That brings a total
00:09:19to seven bodies found over the past two months. Well, these
00:09:23discoveries have sparked fears that a serial killer could be at large, and it's
00:09:27triggered a high level police investigation. Authorities say the deaths may be
00:09:31linked, though they have not confirmed if one person or a single
00:09:35person is responsible. Now the case underscores longstanding concerns for
00:09:38violent crime in South Africa, particularly against women. and
00:09:42children, latest statistics show that the country recorded more than
00:09:465,400 murders between April and July, average of
00:09:49about 45 every day. The organization UN Women says the
00:09:53country's femicide rates are among the highest in the world. The BBC's
00:09:57Nom Sasego sent us this report from Kempton
00:10:00Park. The body of sixth woman has been
00:10:04discovered here in the east of Johannesburg a township of
00:10:08Guatema. Police investigations have suggested that her
00:10:11body was is dumped here overnight or early um this
00:10:15morning and they are saying that she is believed to be in her 30s
00:10:19and that her body is badly decomposed,
00:10:23but what is also worrying here? is the fact that her
00:10:26body is the fourth body that has been found in
00:10:30just one week and that has left south african women
00:10:34terrified. it is not okay
00:10:37that you'll be afraid to go to the shop, it is not
00:10:41okay that you'll be afraid to go in gym, it is not okay
00:10:45that you'll be afraid to just take a walk because that walk around to the
00:10:49corner might be the last time you ever walk in your lifetime, mean what happened to the
00:10:52days when we grew up and we could play? streets, there are fears
00:10:56that a serial killer is on the loose, however the police have moved to
00:11:00say that there is a possibility that there is more than one
00:11:04perpetrator who is uh behind these murders, and they
00:11:08are saying that they are following uh very positive leads
00:11:11and the detectives are doing all they can to
00:11:15ensure that whoever is responsible for these
00:11:18murders is brought to book, we are looking a number
00:11:22of possibilities um whether we are dealing with one
00:11:26perpetrator or multiple suspects, the
00:11:29investigators are still on the ground, peacing
00:11:33information together, gathering the necessary
00:11:36evidence to try and prove that theory, whether are we
00:11:40dealing with one perpetrator, are these copy cat crimes
00:11:44and murder scenes or are we dealing with a group of
00:11:48people that are um committing these
00:11:52crimes? body of a runner that was... ly
00:11:55identified yesterday is that of woman who
00:11:58disappeared when she had gone for a run and she never
00:12:02returned home. we all received the news from the
00:12:05daughter at the age of eight years cuz tunzu had
00:12:09routine, she was one the people
00:12:13that from work, she had a time to
00:12:16start jogging and the time to return back
00:12:19home. so that young lady,
00:12:23i still take... heard of that young lady buse she's
00:12:27the one that actually broke the news after she noticed
00:12:30that uh half past six the mother didn't return
00:12:34back that's how we all received the
00:12:37information president sir ramaposa released a
00:12:41statement saying that the discovery these bodies is living
00:12:45fear and uncertainty among south african women and also promised
00:12:48that the government will do all it can to find the
00:12:52perpetrators well thanks Stay with us, you are

00:14:59Welcome back, this is Focus on Africa. Now, if you are
00:15:03Nigerian, you can own a share the Dangote oil refinery
00:15:07this month. This is after the company listed publicly in what is
00:15:10described as Africa's largest ever share sale. The monthlong
00:15:14offer could raise as much as 2.1 billion US
00:15:17dollars. The refinery, which started production back in
00:15:202024, is one the largest in the world and took more than
00:15:24decade. to complete. Alico Dangote who is Africa's
00:15:28richest man, made his fortune in cement and sugar in
00:15:32Nigeria before expanding to 16 other countries on the
00:15:35continent. Nigeria is Africa's biggest. all producer, but until the
00:15:39refinery was opened, most the country's fuel had to be
00:15:42imported due to lack of refining capacity locally.
00:15:46let's listen in to what else mr. dangote had to
00:15:49say when he listed his company. today is
00:15:53not simply about listing a company, it is about listing
00:15:57a about listing a new
00:16:00possibility for Nigeria and for Africa and for
00:16:04black race. today we from: open
00:16:08the initial public offering of danguti petroleum
00:16:11refinery and petrol chemicals (fze) that
00:16:15were inviting Nigerians,
00:16:18Africans,
00:16:19Caribbeans, uh, Europeans,
00:16:23Americans, Chinese, everybody across the world
00:16:27to become shareholders in one the Africa's most
00:16:31transformational industrial projects.
00:16:35But, what is an initial public offering? and how does it
00:16:38work? the BBC's Ayuba Ilia breaks it down for
00:16:41us. imagine your friend owns a very successful business,
00:16:45say huge supermarket that sells almost everything,
00:16:49then your friend wants to expand it, so instead of boring all the
00:16:53money, they decided to sell small pieces the business to
00:16:57lots of people a fixed price per share.
00:17:01that is basically what an initial public offer also known as
00:17:05IPO does and that is what, the Dangote refinery is
00:17:09offering. Africa's richest man Alico Dangote plans to sell about
00:17:124 billion of shares in his refinery, hoping to raise
00:17:16about 1.6 billion US dollars. With
00:17:20as little as about four US dollars, people can become part
00:17:23owners the company. So why does Dangote need the money?
00:17:27Well, the refinery currently has the capacity to process about
00:17:3170000 barrels of crude a day, and the
00:17:35company wants to double that amount. by 2029,
00:17:39some energy experts say that this could mean more petrol, diesel and
00:17:42aviation fuel being produced in Africa rather than importing from
00:17:46elsewhere and could increase trade between African
00:17:49countries. Others however express concerns that the
00:17:53shares could be overpriced if today's high profits don't
00:17:57last or if the ambitious expansion plans
00:18:00falter. So we spoke to Temmy Popula, the head the
00:18:04Nigeria Exchange group, formerly known as the Nigerian stock. exchange
00:18:08about the significance the Dangote IPO listing, I started
00:18:12by asking him about how big or significant moment this listing
00:18:16was for Nigeria's stock market.
00:18:18The reality is that if we think about this transaction, there are two parts to it, first and
00:18:22foremost
00:18:23some transactions matter, they matter because their
00:18:26scale, some the transactions then matter because of
00:18:30what they make the market participants believe is
00:18:33possible, they matter because they change the way that those
00:18:36market put think about their market and this transaction brings
00:18:40both, if we look first to this from the level of
00:18:43scale, by many measures, it's the largest
00:18:47IPO ever in the history the African capital markets. talking about
00:18:51democratizing access to the capital markets, what sort of investment
00:18:55appetite have you seen from young nigerians, from young women, tell us
00:18:59more. on day one when we launched the offer, many many apps
00:19:02of, lot of our distributors actually halted and crashed
00:19:06if i could say, so just because the level of demand was you know uh
00:19:10way more than what we have actually really seen uh the interest
00:19:14is there, there's a lot of enthusiasm. i see, you mentioned expanding
00:19:18this now to bring in the wider African capital
00:19:21markets, um, people in Kenya, in South
00:19:25Africa and elsewhere had indicated at least on social media that they'd
00:19:29be keen to tap into this IPO, is it possible to invest beyond Nigeria?
00:19:33the simple answer is yes, Alaji Dangote has made it clear also that this is a big
00:19:36dream that... has, we share those dreams, if you think about it, the
00:19:40large African companies, frankly speaking, should be financed by
00:19:43Africans, we need to be able to mobilize capital across the
00:19:47continent and funnel them frankly into whatever businesses in whatever
00:19:51countries that they are to drive our collective growth, so my view is
00:19:55that over the next day or so a bit more clarity on this subject to be given as
00:19:59to you, each country, the regulations are different, the
00:20:02modalities are different, but in reality yes this is
00:20:06huge huge piece. of what we're looking to do here, so that by the time
00:20:10we are done, it's capital flows from retail investors
00:20:14right,
00:20:15that um has been a scale that we have ever seen before. ever since the
00:20:19Dangoti IPO went live, have you received interest from the founders
00:20:23or CEOs of other privately held companies that would want to potentially open
00:20:27up their ownership via the capital markets? the answer to that is yes, I mean
00:20:31before this offer we had we thought was decent enough
00:20:34pipeline, but I like that you asked that because for us one the things that we
00:20:38think will be key success from this is really not just the
00:20:42ability to raise capital, like alaji Dangote said yesterday during the
00:20:46launch, i think that question has been answered, the question around can he race?
00:20:50capital can capital be raised? the answer to that is yes. what advice would you
00:20:54have for young first time investors on the potential and
00:20:57also the risks of investing in the capital market? it is a
00:21:01long-term gain. capital markets are risky.
00:21:05you've got to make sure that you look at the potential investment
00:21:08properly. of course you typically invest because you expected to
00:21:12appreciate the reality is that it can also depreciate. so that's a
00:21:16very important piece of you know the advice I would like to... to give
00:21:20to people e now, imagine living
00:21:24with lifelong physical and psychological scars of attack,
00:21:28fueled in part by either misogyny, that's a dislike or distrust of
00:21:32women or romantic rejection. now this is a
00:21:35brutal reality for many women globally, yet the stigma of acid
00:21:39violence forces most survivors into silence. focus in africa
00:21:43podcast host Nkechi Ogbona spoke to one survivor
00:21:47living here in Kenya where doctors are noticing warring increase in
00:21:51cases, she begins by tracing back to the exact moment that she
00:21:54was attacked and a warning here, this next interview contains

00:22:03got attack when i was 16 years
00:22:07old, the parents passed on when we were young, i
00:22:11started working as house help, so here where
00:22:14i landed in this family, i went with all my documents, the
00:22:18papers of how old were you? this time i was 13
00:22:21getting to 14 okay so we stayed from form
00:22:25one, form two, form three, so basically it was
00:22:29from high school right, from from one started from high school, yes right,
00:22:33and they were still your guardians, yeah, okay, so from here, so
00:22:37i started like the guy started like demanding me, forcing me
00:22:41to accept him to be his girlfriend official, and
00:22:45then i said no, mimi, no, i'm not set for that,

00:23:12there's a shortcut, so on
00:23:14now on our way with this shortcut in the middle, he started, okay,
00:23:18it might be the end of your life, depending with the answer you're going to give me, i
00:23:22said, oh, this is what you wanted, i said no, and i
00:23:26will not, in fact i'm going to tell my teachers even if i don't
00:23:30know them, for them to help me, even to accommodate me,
00:23:34so me, what i had in the next place, be without even
00:23:38knowing who and what was going on, i had
00:23:41something like a splash of something from the head
00:23:45here, here right, yeah, so the way he
00:23:49just splashed. like that
00:23:51the hot thing in it was like and choking smell i
00:23:54was like what is this now in plus the reaction
00:23:58and he repeated it after that now i knew now i'm dying so
00:24:02when i was i knew that so i was turning
00:24:05to to brag that whatever he had the can that he had
00:24:09so you wanted to struggle with him whatever yeah so me i knew that
00:24:13i'm still strong i'll come and fight him i know i'm dying
00:24:16but we are going to die together so when our time like this
00:24:20he timed me so it entered the face plus
00:24:24inside the high - when it reach there i could
00:24:28not think of anything the acid entered inside my mouth so the
00:24:32tongs were like so i could not i was like screening i could
00:24:36not i could not screen i could not cry for help and nobody would hear
00:24:40me he would splash it and say if you happen to be alive no man
00:24:43will admire you and he dropped that nini the the
00:24:47container yeah there and he left, talk me
00:24:51through the moment you saw
00:24:55yourself when you had woken up from
00:24:58consciousness, i saw something, i thought it was
00:25:01not me, i knew i was normal
00:25:05now, it was like i was counting hours now
00:25:09to finish up, but luckily basically
00:25:13you thought you were dying, yeah i knew that because i could not speak,
00:25:17is there something that this incident? did not change
00:25:21about you? I'm another person, I'm another new benter,
00:25:24because if I see the journey that
00:25:27I've come from since then, if the
00:25:31other benter, I think that benter would not make it, but I

00:26:09Hello, let's take a look at the weather around the world
00:26:11and first off to North America where there's a real contrast in temperature, we've still
00:26:15got some very warm air holding place across the southern plains from
00:26:18Texas, Arkansas, all the way towards the Mid-Atlantic, cooler
00:26:22conditions to the north of that and where those air masses meet, we've got some stormy
00:26:25weather pushing across parts the northern plains, also some heavy
00:26:29downpours here around the desert, southwest these a monsoonal. showers pushing
00:26:33in here, for Mexico, one or two heavier showers around the bay of Campeche,
00:26:37and we've also got some heavier rain pushing in for Costa Rica, Panama, into Nicoragua as
00:26:41well, we could see some heavier downpors around the lesser antelies as
00:26:45well, heading across South America now and there's still some heavy rain
00:26:48across the far north of Peru up towards Colombia as well, dryer conditions
00:26:52around the Amazon Basin, this frontal system just starting to clear from the
00:26:55southeaster Brazil, temperatures will eventually rise for southern Brazil
00:26:59into Argentina over the next few days, but to the far
00:27:03south. now across Europe and we're seeing drop in temperature, it's been very hot
00:27:07across France, Spain as well, a frontal system is introducing cooler,
00:27:10fresher air and some heavy downpors affecting parts the alpine
00:27:14region, Switzerland up through Germany into Finland as well, still
00:27:18pretty warm to the south of that and some stormy conditions for southern parts of Greece,
00:27:22we've got low pressure in the Mediterranean here, that may affect some northern coast of
00:27:26Africa, around Libya, Egypt as well, heavy showers around the Gulf of Guine, some
00:27:30downpours likely here and it's going to turn and increasingly wet in Cape Town
00:27:34after Wednesday, 17 degrees on Wednesday, wet and windy weather then pushing eastwards
00:27:38across South Africa. Lots of dry settle weather for much the Middle East at
00:27:42the moment, few showers down towards Yemen, one or two up towards the Caspian
00:27:45sea, but dry and hot and sunny in between. Across
00:27:49India now and some heavy monsoonal showers building across
00:27:53northern and northeastern parts the country, heading across to Bangladesh, still one or two
00:27:56sharp showers around Rajastan, Gujarat as well, the bulk the heavy rain
00:28:00though, further south for the Maldives.
00:28:02that Sri Lanka, more heavy rain though working in across Japan, it's been
00:28:06very wet, to
