00:01:43Ayrshire. The King urged the audience audience to make sure that they develop
00:01:47develop technology which would keep keep humanity sacred. The royal intervention
00:01:50intervention is the latest in a spate spate of recent warnings over the
00:01:53the safety of AI, and the urgent urgent need for regulation. Our correspondent
00:01:57correspondent Shiona McCallum has
00:01:58has the top story. Not just another
00:02:03another royal engagement for the the King. He was hosting Jensen Huang,
00:02:06Huang, the boss of one of the world's
00:02:08world's most valuable companies in in Nvidia and Sir Demis Hassabis,
00:02:11Hassabis, the co-founder of Google Google DeepMind, along with some
00:02:14some of the world's most influential
00:02:16influential voices on AI. And as as soon as pleasantries were over,
00:02:20over, it was a stark warning. There
00:02:23There seems urgency in adequately
00:02:26adequately considering the existential existential dangers of such technologies
00:02:30technologies falling into the wrong wrong hands. The King addressed an
00:02:33an audience that included Tino Cuellar
00:02:36Cuellar from Anthropic, Sarah Friar
00:02:37Friar from OpenAI and Professor Chu
00:02:40Chu Lang from the Shanghai University University in China. A Chinese presence
00:02:43presence in the room is significant, significant, too, with President
00:02:46President Trump framing AI as a race,
00:02:49race, America must win. The summit summit has been in the royal diary
00:02:52diary for six months, but the timing timing of it has become part of the
00:02:56the story. Last week, a former Anthropic Anthropic researcher said some of
00:02:59of the people building AI believe believe that it could kill us all
00:03:02all by the end of the decade. The
00:03:04The King has asked you here to give
00:03:07give reassurances that this technology technology will not harm humanity.
00:03:10humanity. Can you give those reassurances?
00:03:14reassurances? It is the responsibility responsibility of the AI companies
00:03:18companies ourselves to develop the the technology safely and to properly
00:03:21properly test it. That as we move
00:03:23move from labs to product development,
00:03:26development, the companies have to
00:03:27to become much more rigorous in testing.
00:03:30testing. But other chief execs are
00:03:32are less optimistic. I think that
00:03:35that if we all create AI that are
00:03:38are able to act autonomously, that that can define their own objectives,
00:03:41objectives, that can earn money, money, that can own assets, that
00:03:45that could run businesses, we're
00:03:48we're essentially ceding a new silicon silicon species, which will no doubt
00:03:52doubt compete with us for resources, resources, no matter how much it
00:03:55it cares about humanity and loves loves us. Beyond the garden. The
00:03:59The public's feelings about AI are are equally as mixed. I do think
00:04:03think it is scary if you think about about it too much, so it's better better just to stay in the present.
00:04:06present. I think there's a lot of of fear mongering as well with it, it, but I do think it's going to
00:04:10to take a lot of jobs. And the debate debate is not only about safety and
00:04:14and jobs. The data centres powering
00:04:17powering AI require enormous amounts amounts of electricity and water.
00:04:20water. Placing the tech's environmental environmental issues at the heart
00:04:23heart of a cause that King Charles
00:04:25Charles has championed for decades.
00:04:28decades. The King cannot regulate regulate artificial intelligence, intelligence, but what he can do
00:04:31do is use his convening power to to get these rivals round the table.
00:04:35table. The question is will anything anything concrete be produced from
00:04:39from these private discussions beyond
00:04:41beyond what happens in Dumfries House

00:05:42you, first of all, I'm sure you're you're across all the revelations
00:05:45revelations from Earl Spencer's book. book. What do you make of these latest
00:05:48latest ones? Well, we go into good
00:05:50good evening. We go into a lot more
00:05:54more detail on that period, that that extraordinary period immediately
00:05:57immediately after Diana's death 29
00:05:5929 years ago. Now. And yes, the Charles
00:06:03Charles Spencer in the latest extract extract talks about, as you said,
00:06:07said, he suggests that somehow Prince
00:06:10Prince Charles was upbeat, was elated.
00:06:12elated. He said, like a lottery winner
00:06:15winner following the death of the the princess. I mean, these are very,
00:06:18very, very wounding words. And it
00:06:21it explains, I think, why we had
00:06:23had that remarkable statement from
00:06:25from the palace yesterday very forceful,
00:06:27forceful, very swift. Normally the
00:06:29the palace doesn't respond to these these things except when I think
00:06:33think they feel that something really
00:06:37really can't go unacknowledged. One One thinks back to the Queen's immortal
00:06:40immortal line. Recollections may may vary about some of the allegations
00:06:44allegations thrown at the monarchy monarchy by Harry and Meghan some some years ago. This is of that order.
00:06:48order. But then this book is of.
00:06:50of. I think it's the most explosive
00:06:53explosive royal memoir since Harry's Harry's book spare. And this is the
00:06:56the King clearly saying that is simply simply not how I remember it. And
00:06:59And I think a lot of people who know know the King who work with him,
00:07:02him, who met him over the years, years, who know him well, I don't
00:07:06don't think that the picture that that Charles Spencer paints is one
00:07:09one that they will recognise, but but of course nobody else was there
00:07:12there in the room at the time. And And I suppose what's less clear now
00:07:15now is, is how the public might perceive perceive these very personal claims.
00:07:19claims. It's a very strong allegation allegation to make very strong rebuttal
00:07:23rebuttal from the palace, as you you said. How much damage do you
00:07:25you think something like this will will do to how King Charles is viewed
00:07:28viewed right now, particularly given given all the other problems that
00:07:31that have beset the royal family family over the past couple of years?
00:07:34years? Well, funnily enough, I don't don't think it's going to make much
00:07:37much difference. I think the public public have a very settled view of
00:07:41of the King of the Charles. They
00:07:44They know most people are pro the the monarchy, a significant proportion
00:07:48proportion of the public are anti anti it. I mean views don't really
00:07:51really change. I noticed when I was
00:07:54was writing my book on the late Queen
00:07:56Queen and looked at all the opinion
00:07:59opinion polling in those months after
00:08:00after the late Queen's death, and
00:08:03and suddenly you had the new King
00:08:04King Charles battered by allegations allegations by by new series of The
00:08:08The Crown, which painted him in a a very unfavourable light, a six
00:08:11six part Netflix series by Harry Harry and Meghan, followed by Harry's
00:08:14Harry's book Spurs about 12 weeks weeks of negative headlines. And
00:08:17And the interesting thing was the the polling didn't move one jot.
00:08:21jot. People just had their view. view. And I think it'll be like that
00:08:24that with this. I mean, clearly it's it's pretty unpleasant for all the
00:08:28the family to read this stuff. And
00:08:30And I think one of the reasons that that the King came out as forcefully
00:08:34forcefully as he did was, you know, know, right now things are delicate
00:08:38delicate between him, the relationship relationship between him and both
00:08:40both his sons are sort of three way
00:08:43way relationship. And I think he
00:08:45he would be very unhappy if somehow
00:08:47somehow the Spencer view of events events becomes a sort of settled
00:08:51settled narrative. So I think it it was felt a need was felt as to
00:08:55to say, no, that's not how we view view it, but I don't I wouldn't be be hanging around waiting for any
00:08:59any more statements from the Palace. Palace. I think they've made their their point. I think they'll now
00:09:02now leave it to the public to make make their own minds up. OK, Robert,

00:09:29without his wife Meghan. There was was some expectation potentially potentially they could come as a
00:09:31a couple, but she wasn't there with with him. But he was still the star
00:09:34star of the show as you see him there there climbing up those stairs towards
00:09:37towards the Greenwich building behind behind him, supporting the Invictus Invictus cause, which of course is
00:09:41is very much something that he holds holds dear to his heart. Let's speak
00:09:44speak to our royal correspondent correspondent Noor Nanji, who is
00:09:47is in Greenwich, where Prince Harry Harry has just arrived for that event.

00:09:53through the event. Prince Harry's Harry's arrival and of course, the
00:09:56the fact that this is his first public public appearance since arriving
00:09:59arriving in the UK, but also since since those Earl Spencer revelations. revelations. We've just been talking

00:10:06And even here there's no escaping escaping the Earl Spencer revelations
00:10:10revelations as Prince Harry arrived, arrived, a journalist did ask him
00:10:12him what he made of his uncle's book. book. It may not surprise you that
00:10:16that he didn't answer that. He walked walked straight into the venue. But
00:10:20But you know, tonight for Prince Prince Harry is really something
00:10:22something for him to celebrate. We
00:10:24We know how dear the Invictus Games Games are to him, how close it is
00:10:28is to his heart. This is an event
00:10:30event which is around an awards event
00:10:33event which is celebrating the people people who the communities around
00:10:36around Invictus and the people who've who've really championed and celebrated
00:10:39celebrated that cause. And so it's it's for him, something he describes
00:10:42describes as a family. We know how how much it means to him. He, of
00:10:45of course, founded the Invictus Games,
00:10:47Games, which are for injured servicemen servicemen and servicewomen. So he
00:10:51he speaks a lot of this. The group group here as his family. And we
00:10:54we know that he is, as you say, treated treated as something of a hero when
00:10:57when he arrives at events like this, this, even when he was living in
00:11:00in the US, he still made a point point of attending all these sorts sorts of events. Of course, now he
00:11:04he has moved back here and this is
00:11:06is his first big public event since since moving back here. So that will
00:11:10will be the focus today. No escaping escaping the Earl Spencer revelations.
00:11:14revelations. But of course for him, him, a moment to celebrate Meghan,
00:11:17Meghan, as you were saying there, there, she did not join him. There
00:11:20There had been some speculation she she might join on at this event because
00:11:24because she does tend to attend a
00:11:26a lot of the Invictus Games events
00:11:29events with him. But sources close
00:11:31close to the Sussexes have said that that her priority is really settling
00:11:35settling the children, Archie and and Lilibet, into their new routine.
00:11:37routine. Of course they've just moved moved a country as well so it's a
00:11:40a big step for them and that is her her priority for the time being.
00:11:44being. So we understand that she she stayed with the children tonight.

00:12:03appearance since arriving in the the UK. And at the same time this
00:12:07this evening, more revelations with with regards to Earl Spencer and
00:12:11and his sister Princess Diana. It's It's never a dull moment for the
00:12:14the royal family. Well, what a tangled
00:12:16tangled web. The rich tapestry of
00:12:18of royal life with some very sad
00:12:21sad strands indeed revealed today. today. You couldn't make it up, could
00:12:25could you? Starting with the theft,
00:12:28theft, these four books from a lorry lorry parked up in the Netherlands.
00:12:31Netherlands. It's almost worthy of of Agatha Christie, isn't it? The
00:12:35The mystery of the missing bombshell
00:12:37bombshell books to the revelations revelations contained in the pieces
00:12:40pieces published today by the mail, mail, which really leave you reeling.
00:12:44reeling. Some of it. And one does does feel a degree of sorrow, of
00:12:48of course, for the King having to
00:12:50to face this and carry on doing his
00:12:52his job still, in a very early part
00:12:55part of his reign and dealing. Of Of course, in my opinion rather well
00:12:59well by issuing this unprecedented
00:13:02unprecedented statement where he he talked about the shocking effects
00:13:05effects of fraternal grief, talking
00:13:07talking of it, clouding reason of of affecting judgement and colouring
00:13:11colouring memory in other words, words, a rather longer statement
00:13:16statement akin to the one his mother mother once made after the Oprah
00:13:19Oprah Winfrey interview that recollections
00:13:21recollections may vary, and we are
00:13:23are a long way on from the events
00:13:26events being discussed. I mean, how
00:13:28how much of what Earl Spencer has
00:13:30has said do. You kind of think sounds
00:13:34sounds right? Well, we've long wondered,
00:13:38wondered, long thought about the the true nature of the relationship
00:13:41relationship between the King and and the young and inexperienced Lady
00:13:45Lady Diana Spencer when they first
00:13:47first married, she spoke of being being the third party in a marriage.
00:13:51marriage. We're all aware of this,
00:13:53this, but if you read the extracts
00:13:56extracts today, he talks. Earl Spencer, Spencer, for example, about when
00:13:59when Prince Charles, as he then was,
00:14:01was, was speaking to him about the
00:14:03the death, the sudden death of Princess
00:14:05Princess Diana. He said that he felt
00:14:07felt he sounded elated, that somehow
00:14:10somehow he felt freed. Perhaps going
00:14:13going forward. But of course, shock, shock, grief hits people in different
00:14:17different ways. And when you're relating
00:14:19relating the content of a telephone telephone call, so much is down to
00:14:23to tone of voice, isn't it? And at
00:14:26at this distance in time, we really
00:14:28really don't know. Indeed, we do do know that the speech given by
00:14:32by Earl Spencer at his sister's funeral,
00:14:35funeral, standing in that great gilded
00:14:37gilded wooden pulpit in St Paul's
00:14:39Paul's Cathedral rated by some people people as one of the great speeches
00:14:43speeches of the 20th century, was
00:14:45was full of fire and invective, anger
00:14:47anger and sorrow at what he felt
00:14:49felt had been the way his sister sister had been treated up to the
00:14:53the time of her death. So his pen
00:14:55pen is very much dipped in vitriol vitriol as he writes this book. Let's
00:14:59Let's talk a little bit about the the boys, about Harry and William.
00:15:03William. They both have slightly slightly different relationships relationships with their uncle Earl
00:15:07Earl Spencer, I believe. One never never knows, of course, what the
00:15:10the truth is behind these rumours, rumours, but how do you think they
00:15:14they would both be? You know, reacting
00:15:16reacting and thinking in terms of of the things they've been seeing
00:15:19seeing in this book? Well, I should should think in very different ways.
00:15:23ways. Prince William will keep his his counsel. And we've just heard
00:15:26heard that someone did query with with Prince Harry whether he knew
00:15:30knew about it, wanted to make a comment, comment, and he just carried on walking.
00:15:34walking. We know that he knew about about the book. We don't think he's
00:15:38he's read it or perhaps read any any of the extracts yet, but it must
00:15:41must be very difficult for the boys
00:15:43boys to revisit that most painful
00:15:47painful period of their lives. And And I have to say about the fact
00:15:50fact that the King is supposed to
00:15:52to have said to Earl Spencer that that we won't remember Diana for
00:15:56for long, or words to that effect.
00:15:59effect. All I would say, if that that is the case, why then did the
00:16:02the Prince of Wales tell his mother, mother, the Queen, that it wasn't
00:16:06wasn't just going to be a private private family funeral? There was
00:16:09was going to be a full state funeral.
00:16:12funeral. And I think in doing so
00:16:14so made that funeral totally memorable.
00:16:16memorable. And the memory of Diana
00:16:19Diana memorable too. So whatever
00:16:21whatever these people involved her
00:16:23her boys, the King feel personally personally and I should think they're
00:16:27they're feeling very hurt and shocked shocked by much of this. I very much
00:16:30much doubt whether we will hear any
00:16:32any public expressions from any of
