00:04:58gasps when her death was announced announced ahead of a performance

00:05:10has sadly passed away today. It was
00:05:14was absolutely extraordinary. I was was in fact, I was sitting in the
00:05:18the stalls waiting for the show to to go up. It was quite something.
00:05:22something. And I think that it was
00:05:23was great to kind of be together together in that moment. There was
00:05:27was something about her that stood stood out and people were attracted
00:05:31attracted to her. The way she spoke
00:05:33spoke to them because she was so
00:05:35so normal and nice and kind and
00:05:42generous. Dolly died just a year year after her husband, Carl Dean. Dean. They'd been married for six
00:05:45six decades. On his death, Dolly Dolly wrote He's in God's arms now
00:05:49now and I'm OK with that. I am a
00:05:53a person of faith, and I truly believe believe that I'm going to see him
00:05:56him again someday. And I see him him every day in my memories and
00:05:59and in my heart and in all the things things that we used to do and all
00:06:02all the things that we built together.
00:06:07together. Just months after her husband's husband's death, fears for Dolly's
00:06:11Dolly's own health started to appear
00:06:13appear in the press, prompting messages
00:06:15messages of reassurance. The good
00:06:18good news is I'm responding really
00:06:20really well to meds and treatments
00:06:23treatments and I'm improving every
00:06:24every day. In early August 2026,
00:06:282026, she posted about her upcoming upcoming projects, including a Dolly
00:06:31Dolly Parton musical, which is due
00:06:32due to open on Broadway in December
00:06:35December 2026. I will be there as
00:06:37as much as I can be and of course,
00:06:40course, good Lord willing and the the Creek don't rise. I will definitely
00:06:43definitely be there on the opening opening night. And she was looking
00:06:46looking forward to the opening of
00:06:47of her hotel in Nashville. From rags
00:06:51rags to rhinestones. I've been blessed
00:06:53blessed with a life full of stories. stories. And now I finally get to
00:06:57to share them all with you in one
00:07:01one place. I think the first time time we realised that it was actually
00:07:04actually something more serious was was when in May, when her Vegas residency
00:07:08residency was cancelled, because because that is a very big thing. thing. At that point we knew she
00:07:12she wasn't well enough to perform perform probably ever again. And
00:07:16And in recent times, you know, there there have been a few things she's she's missed. She missed her 80th
00:07:2080th anniversary celebration at the the Grand Ole Opry. Even, I think
00:07:23think just over ten days before she she died, she was meant to be at
00:07:26at her theme park in Pigeon Forge,
00:07:28Forge, Dollywood, and opening one one of their new rides. And she pulled
00:07:31pulled out at the last minute. Her
00:07:36Her death, after what was described described as a brief battle with
00:07:40with cancer, was a shock to millions. millions. We texted each other straight
00:07:43straight away being like, oh, my my God. Immediately you start to
00:07:46to reminisce about all the small small and big things that have happened
00:07:50happened throughout her career and and throughout our career that she
00:07:53she has been unknowingly very influencing. influencing. She's got such an amazing
00:07:56amazing story of how she started
00:07:58started out, how she has like impacted
00:08:01impacted the industry as a whole
00:08:03whole so positively. So just how
00:08:08how could a woman from rural Tennessee Tennessee spark such an outpouring
00:08:11outpouring of grief from around the
00:08:14the world? Dolly Rebecca Parton was
00:08:18was born in Tennessee into a large large family. She described in her
00:08:21her own words as dirt poor. I grew grew up in the Great Smoky Mountains
00:08:24Mountains of East Tennessee in a a family of 12 children. We had six
00:08:28six girls and six boys and of course
00:08:30course we were just farm folks and and we didn't have things that money
00:08:33money could buy. And of course we we didn't make money. We grew our
00:08:36our own food and we just made our
00:08:38our living from the land. She said
00:08:41said she was inspired to sing by by one of her uncles, who suggested
00:08:44suggested she did one day, and then
00:08:45then obviously she had a real talent.
00:08:48talent. In this footage. Shot by

00:08:531961, Dolly plays for a local radio radio station in Knoxville, Tennessee.
00:08:56Tennessee. The world famous Grand Grand Ole Opry, America's oldest
00:09:00oldest and most famous country music
00:09:02music show. On Arkansas. King Khalid
00:09:04Khalid Tolu. At the age of 13, she she made her first appearance at
00:09:08at the home of country music, the the Grand Ole Opry. So I just walked
00:09:12walked up to Jimmy C Newman and I I said, Jimmy, I want to sing. So
00:09:15So he told Johnny Cash that I was was going to sing, and Johnny introduced
00:09:18introduced me and I sang my little little heart out and I just tore tore the house down. I know now it
00:09:22it was because I was little, but but I just sang it over and over over and over. Boy, I thought then
00:09:26then I was going to be a big star. The Grand Ole Opry was, was
00:09:30was very much about family and things,
00:09:32things, and if an uncle knew someone someone then they would have said,
00:09:35said, this is going to be worth doing doing when you go to the Opry, it's
00:09:38it's quite often there'll be somebody somebody there who's a relative of
00:09:40of someone famous. It was the start
00:09:44start of a long association with with the Opry, and Nashville was
00:09:47was where she met her husband, Carl.
00:09:48Carl. She wanted to be a star and
00:09:51and she found someone who was something something of a recluse and was quite
00:09:55quite happy if she wasn't taking
00:09:56taking him to things. Dolly is not
00:10:02not only a great singer, but she's she's a fine songwriter too. And
00:10:05And this is a number you wrote isn't. isn't. Nashville is a hard town to
00:10:08to break into in the music industry. industry. It takes a lot. So she
00:10:12she had that talent. She put the
00:10:13the hard work in and she was successful
00:10:16successful and kind of took those those opportunities. I would be doing
00:10:19doing my music, writing my songs songs if I had to sell them out of
00:10:22of the trunk of my car. And I've I've done that in the early days
00:10:25days when I was young and trying trying to get things going. So I
00:10:29I would do it no matter what, even even if I had to take another job.
00:10:33job. Jolene. Jolene. Jolene. Jolene.
00:10:38Jolene. Her music was rooted in personal personal experiences of love and
00:10:41and loss. Like Jolene, for example,
00:10:45example, there was a lot of songs songs at that time about like being
00:10:48being sassy to the Woman or You Ain't Ain't Woman Enough to Take My Man.
00:10:51Man. And she brought a song out that that was empathetic to the woman.
00:10:55woman. She was like understanding understanding why the woman would
00:10:58would take her man, but she was pleading pleading from a vulnerable perspective
00:11:02perspective rather rather than from from an angry perspective or like like a woman hating spectrum. Yeah.
00:11:06Yeah. So she was still a woman's
00:11:07woman's woman. My coat of many colours
00:11:11colours that my mama made for me.
00:11:14me. Dolly was a storyteller who would
00:11:16would turn to her own family for
00:11:18for material. Her upbringing in the
00:11:21the Smoky Mountains, lots of siblings siblings growing up very, very poor.
00:11:25poor. She wrote songs like The Coat Coat of Many Colours, which is about
00:11:27about her mama who made her this this coat. She writes about being
00:11:31being poor, about not knowing how how to read. It was very much rooted
00:11:35rooted in family values, and she
00:11:37she continued that in all of her
00:11:39her writing throughout her career. The most important thing
00:11:42thing in her life from the beginning beginning to the end was her family.
00:11:46family. She didn't go off and find
00:11:48find a different husband. She. She
00:11:51She didn't change the way she was. was. I think she wanted to be Dolly
00:11:55Dolly Parton professionally, but but privately she was Dolly Dean,
00:11:57Dean, which was the name on all the the paperwork we had because again,
00:12:01again, if she went through passport passport control looking as she normally
00:12:05normally did not as Dolly Parton, Parton, no one would have realised
00:12:08realised who she was. In her lifetime.
00:12:10lifetime. Dolly Parton wrote more
00:12:12more than 3000 songs and sold over over 100 million records, becoming
00:12:16becoming one of the most successful successful country artists of all
00:12:18all time. I'm proud to be a woman
00:12:21woman in this business. Dolly started started out and continued, no matter
00:12:23matter how big she got, writing her
00:12:26her own material and being the voice
00:12:29voice of her own songs. And obviously obviously we've heard some massive
00:12:32massive covers like I Will Always
00:12:34Always Love You and people will cover cover Dolly forever. We've covered
00:12:38covered Jolene and 9 to 5 and hopefully
00:12:40hopefully many more. E! I should
00:12:45should stay. Dolly wrote songs that
00:12:48that other artists were desperate desperate to get their hands on,
00:12:52on, including stars like The King,
00:12:54King, Elvis Presley. So I'm going.
00:12:57going. Elvis heard the song and wanted
00:12:59wanted to record it and he was very very keen, but the manager rang up
00:13:03up and said, If Elvis records a song, song, we have half the publishing.
00:13:06publishing. And Dolly said, no. And
00:13:11And I. Will half way love you. And
00:13:18And this is the business side of of her coming through for sure. And
00:13:22And then several years after that,
00:13:25that, Whitney Houston sang it and
00:13:28and The Bodyguard and it was it sold
00:13:30sold like 20 million copies. That
00:13:32That single. When she brought country country to Glastonbury, her popularity
00:13:36popularity pulled in an enormous enormous crowd. Among them were the
00:13:39the British Country act Ward Thomas.
00:13:44Thomas. In 2014 was the year that that we first released our first
00:13:47first ever album, and it was the
00:13:48the same year that she played Glastonbury
00:13:51Glastonbury and pulled the biggest biggest audience of the weekend.
00:13:54weekend. And I think with two young young British girls saying we want
00:13:57want to do country music and going going out into the world and saying,
00:14:00saying, hey, will you take us seriously? seriously? I think if it wasn't for
00:14:04for people like Dolly or specifically specifically Dolly and what she had had done before, people
00:15:07pushing towards this digital transformation. transformation. Just as President

00:15:39never feel like a loser. But Dolly Dolly was not a loser. In addition
00:15:43addition to her musical success, success, she became an acclaimed
00:15:46acclaimed actress and she was also
00:15:48also behind many business ventures. ventures. Her last public appearance
00:15:51appearance was at the opening of of Dolly's Tennessean travel

00:15:59that you want or need. But her most

00:16:282003, and I did ask how many of Dolly's Dolly's relatives work here, and
00:16:31and it was over 40 people she was was employing. She had this enormous
00:16:35enormous number of relatives and and people that she knew, and she
00:16:38she was very concerned to help them them not doing things for them, but
00:16:41but giving them jobs and things like
00:16:43like that. Dolly's appeal reached
00:16:46reached far beyond music. Her support
00:16:47support for minority groups, particularly
00:16:50particularly in the LGBTQ community, community, was legendary. Working
00:16:54Working 9 to 5. What a way to make
00:16:56make a living barely getting by.
00:16:59by. Her 9 to 5 co-star Jane Fonda's
00:17:02Fonda's tribute included a poignant
00:17:04poignant reminder of Dolly's solidarity
00:17:07solidarity with her fans. She wrote wrote to her gay and trans fans I
00:17:10I want you to know that she loved loved you, adding that she loved
00:17:13loved all her fans and they are legion.
00:17:16legion. I think the world we live live in at the moment, it's tough,
00:17:20tough, it's difficult for a lot of of people and actually you want to
00:17:23to have someone or something that that you can kind of look to make
00:17:26make you feel good about yourself. yourself. And Dolly, she made people
00:17:29people feel good about herself, whether whether it was her performances, performances, whether it was her
00:17:33her mantras. I mean, she's got so so many quotes that I live by every every single day. It takes a lot
00:17:37lot of money to look this cheap. cheap. Did you say that? Well. Yeah,
00:17:40Yeah, I said that and I meant that that a lot of people think that's that's a joke. That's the biggest
00:17:44biggest truth I ever told. You have
00:17:46have no idea how much it costs to
00:17:48to make a person look this cheap.
00:17:51cheap. She was often pressed by journalists journalists to comment on political
00:17:55political issues, but used her trademark
00:17:57trademark warmth and humour to deflect
00:17:59deflect difficult questions. It was
00:18:02was very significant that President
00:18:04President Trump put up a positive
00:18:07positive tribute to her, and she she was someone who clearly didn't
00:18:10didn't believe in a lot of things things that he did. But she managed
00:18:14managed to always not get political,
00:18:16political, never to cross a line. line. And that was something in a
00:18:20a way that was a legacy that she's she's passed on. Because if you want
00:18:23want to be like Dolly Parton, you you could be so successful. I don't
00:18:27don't think of myself at all as being being political. And that's the worst
00:18:31worst thing that I could think about. about. So there will never be a time
00:18:35time when Dolly Parton says, I'm
00:18:37I'm gonna run for office. That's
00:18:39That's never gonna happen. From office.
00:18:43office. Actually, they're back home. home. They have a lot of signs everywhere.

00:18:48and I my joke is no, we've had enough
00:18:51enough boobs in the White House. House. Republicans love her. Democrats
00:18:54Democrats love her. She never, ever ever brought politics into her music.
