01:07:14missing people, but there may be air pockets or
01:07:17spaces allowing some to stay alive longer. The Colombian
01:07:21military is bringing medical equipment and emergency
01:07:24supplies, joining residents and canine
01:07:27search and rescue teams as they scramble through the rubble of
01:07:31leveled buildings, looking and listening for signs
01:07:35of life
01:07:36after part of this hospital in Cali collapsed. Some patients
01:07:40had to be transferred. Others are being treated on the street.
01:07:46Large areas around the earthquakes epicenter are
01:07:50heavily isolated, accessible only by airplane or
01:07:53boat through the jungle. We can get to the capital city,
01:07:57kiddo. But then to transport, food,
01:07:59assistance and other other items of need to those
01:08:03communities will take time and it's costly. The mayor of
01:08:07Manusela says many people are in shelters,
01:08:10many getting their homes assessed. Maria Campo and her
01:08:13mother stayed at her brothers house Monday night,
01:08:17afraid to return home. They've been checking with
01:08:20engineers who knows about it to see if the structure is
01:08:25affected, affected or not. Still,
01:08:27she feels lucky. We are alive, so we have a lot of things to
01:08:31be grateful right now.
01:08:35And as they watch the search and rescue efforts,
01:08:38they're praying for more moments like this one. There's

01:09:59ever changing, with the Trump advisor now
01:10:01calling out scallops being fished in Canadian waters near
01:10:05the state of Maine. There were taken from the Georges Banks
01:10:08just about the amount we import from Canada driving up our
01:10:12trade deficit and we couldn't take scallops on our side of
01:10:15the Georges Banks
01:10:17this crazy stuff. But this expert says Canada has leverage,
01:10:20especially ahead of the falls US midterms. The election main
01:10:24messages are around affordability and really high
01:10:28energy costs here in the United States. I think that's why
01:10:32we're seeing a a good faith negotiation it appears going on
01:10:36with the US, but Canada has been here before.
01:10:39The two sides were reportedly close to a deal last fall
01:10:42before Trump called off trade talks entirely. Regardless of
01:10:46progress, it really does come back to him.
01:10:49So OK with the goal being early next week,
01:10:52Leblon is staying in Washington to keep up talks. Yeah. And so
01:10:55is Canada's trade negotiator, Jenna Charette. They and their
01:10:59teams have been trying to sort out technical details. We don't
01:11:03yet know when they're planning on going back to Canada or if

01:23:43Today's total eclipse of the sun will sweep across Iceland,
01:23:46Spain and Greenland. And we are taking you to Greenland where
01:23:50our next guest to Canadians join us. They are on the boat
01:23:55on a boat off the coast of Greenland. Jay and Judy
01:23:59Anderson have been chasing eclipses YouTube for over 4
01:24:03decades. Why Greenland this year
01:24:07hadn't been there before? You've been almost everywhere
01:24:11else in the world. How many eclipses is this for you?
01:24:142 now
01:24:16#26 in total eclipses. Wow, that is
01:24:22unbelievable. Now you've spent Jay,
01:24:24you've spent many years working as a meteorologist as the go to
01:24:29weather experts on eclipses. What happens when you have to
01:24:33make a last minute run for clear skies? I mean,
01:24:37you can't on the boat, of course,
01:24:39but over the years was was it disappointing sometimes?
01:24:45Oh, yeah. So we've had our
01:24:47disappointments. And actually here we're kind of running to
01:24:51find clear skies right now on off the coast of Greenland.
01:24:55It's there's not too many openings in the clouds today.
01:24:59But I just heard a discussion on board ship that we're going
01:25:03to head in toward the land into a fiord because may have better
01:25:08weather inside the fjord, but it's a challenge and
01:25:11everybody is watching the sky. If it weren't
01:25:15or a plot of 30 to 60 humpback whales,
01:25:18we we might have been entirely focused on it.
01:25:23Wow. Well, I'm glad that whales provide
01:25:26some diversion. Can you tell me why you chase eclipses and for
01:25:32so long?
01:25:35I think it's because they're just so beautiful and they take
01:25:40you out of your place, your tiny world,
01:25:43and open things up for you. You feel connected to the whole
01:25:47world in the universe and the lighting is amazing. The
01:25:51friends you make are amazing and the places you go to see
01:25:56them are just
01:25:58just so fascinating. Yeah, they check a lot of boxes when
01:26:02if you like to travel and and you want to do it in
01:26:07exotic places in the world, you you end up in a grass shack
01:26:12in Madagascar on a cold night, or you might end up in a luxury
01:26:17hotel in India. It can be everywhere. The Shadow Falls
01:26:21gets you out of the house,
01:26:24out of the house in a in a big way.
01:26:29It doesn't get tiresome. You've seen it so many times.
01:26:34No,
01:26:36travel is a large part of it. And much of the destinations we
01:26:40pick are for the travel. Next year we'll be in Morocco. I
01:26:44haven't been there before. So it's just there's this long
01:26:48string of darkness that goes across the Earth and you just
01:26:52look at what's under it and say, haven't been there,
01:26:56let's go. And and that's the way it happens. Do you
01:26:59sometimes hook up with people who've never seen in the clips
01:27:03before? And what kind of emotion is
01:27:06that?
01:27:08That's fantastic, actually, because they have no
01:27:11expectation. They have sort of, they think they know what they
01:27:15might see, but they don't really know. And
01:27:19then they see it and you're right there and you can. It
01:27:22just builds your own excitement. And I have no problem getting
01:27:27excited. I have problems coming down. But it's just so much fun
01:27:31to be with people who are seeing things for the first
01:27:35time and just in awe.
01:27:38I think if you, sorry, I think you described it as
01:27:42being an Eclipse vampire, didn't you?
01:27:45Yeah, it was. That's my expression. I
01:27:48like to set up beside somebody who hasn't seen it before just
01:27:52to sort of feed off of their excitement and and joy. And
01:27:56although I certainly have my own,
01:27:58I tend to be a little more
01:28:01blaze about eclipses now after so many of them,
01:28:05looking at them more as a
01:28:08phenomenon rather than as an emotional experience. Not me.
01:28:13Phenomenon in what way?
01:28:16Well, I'm looking at the the shape of
01:28:19the corona and the chromosphere, but I also carry a little
01:28:23diffraction grating so I can look at the spectrum of colours
01:28:28in the eclipse and things like that. And that's a dimension
01:28:33that most people, you know, it uses up time. We have two
01:28:37minutes and 15 seconds at best. And boy,
01:28:40you can't spend a lot of time experimenting in 2 minutes and
01:28:4515 seconds.
01:28:47Your first one was in, what, 79? I think What? You know what?
01:28:51How did you get this imagination going?
01:28:53What fascinated you so much that you wanted to do it every
01:28:58year?
01:29:01The fact that it went over us. It's going,
01:29:04it just went over with once you see one,
01:29:07it's kind of like like candy or the best apple you ever had.
01:29:11You need it again. And so you just go a little further and
01:29:16then you've seen two and you think, wow,
01:29:18that would be cool. And the next one,
01:29:21almost the the minute totality is over,
01:29:24people are starting to talk about the next one. You can't
01:29:28just eat just one,
01:29:30you know? You can't just eat 1.
01:29:33It must be the community too. You know it, it's,
01:29:36it's so rare that we can experience something joyful and
01:29:41wondrous, isn't it?
01:29:45It is we, we have 90 people with our
01:29:49group on this boat. We probably know half of them.
01:29:56Wow. And some of them we know very well. So Eclipse Chasing
01:30:00is not only a a world adventure, it's a people adventure in a
01:30:05way. It's so nice to arrive at a place and have good friends,
01:30:09you know, not just acquaintances,
01:30:12but good friends to travel along with you.
01:30:16That's amazing. Well, I hope the clouds clear.

01:32:45Your search master alone
01:32:47A difficile Montreal's police chief says he vows to make
01:32:50things right as the community confronts him over the alleged
01:32:54actions of 16 of his officers. Confidence in police marred by
01:32:58the ongoing investigation
01:33:02outside City Hall, frustration and anger from
01:33:05those who couldn't get in. Others expressed some hope.
01:33:09We're happy to see that something is being done.
01:33:12Although it took other police for this to happen,
01:33:16having the opportunity to talk about it,
01:33:18I think this is a positive change for the future.
01:33:22According to Hado Canada sources,
01:33:24the officers were accused of random stops based solely on
01:33:28ethnicity and cutting off dreadlocks, then taking them
01:33:32as trophies. The claims were first made public back in June
01:33:36after fellow officers made complaints. The news explosive
01:33:40to some, including the mayor. Many
01:33:42Montrealers have lost confidence and it is upon us to
01:33:45make sure that we are working with the SVM to rebuild that
01:33:49trust. But for some community organizers,
01:33:52the allegations aren't a surprise. And they say action
01:33:59we've known this situation that exists for years,
01:34:02we will lift it. We don't want to go back and, you know,
01:34:05rehash these things. We want solutions. And when we talk
01:34:08about solution, we have to talk about something
01:34:11future oriented, something concrete.
01:34:15The police chief saying that's exactly what this public
01:34:18meeting was about, to speak directly with community members.
01:34:22And Sarah, there are calls for actions. So
01:34:24what are people asking for? Well,
01:34:27the police chief says there are a number of measures already in
01:34:31place, collaboration with community
01:34:33organizations, continued sensitivity training.
01:34:36He said it was important to move forward with what he said
01:34:40was transparency and humility. But that was really put to the
01:34:44test at this meeting where few answers were given and people
01:34:48felt they really had little time to speak.

01:34:57Evan, walk us through what we know so
01:34:58far about this case. We don't know anything about the nature
01:35:01of the threat or exactly how it was communicated,
01:35:04but it was received by the US Consulate in Halifax late
01:35:07Sunday afternoon. Police identified A suspect,
01:35:1054 year old Ali Asakura, and just after 8:00 on Monday
01:35:13morning, they found a car belonging to
01:35:15him in a downtown parking garage that appeared to contain
01:35:18a propane tank and containers of a flammable liquid and that
01:35:22led Halifax police to shut down several streets around Halifax
01:35:25Harbor. That car was later determined not to pose a threat to public safety,
01:35:29but as Accurate has now made an initial appearance in
01:35:32provincial court on charges of uttering threats and public
01:35:35mischief. The Crown, though, didn't want to go any further
01:35:38yet. The Crown requested an adjournment under 516 of the
01:35:42Criminal Code. And that just gives the police more time to
01:35:45complete that investigation and to see if there's going to be
01:35:48more charges to be laid now. In Corda,
01:35:51Zachary laid out a series of complaints through an
01:35:54interpreter, among them that his family had
01:35:56been victims of discrimination. Now,
01:35:58there have been shooting attacks on the US consulate in
01:36:02Toronto and allegations that Iran linked groups might have
01:36:05paid guns for hire to carry those out. But there's no
01:36:08suggestion this case might be
01:36:10connected, right? Right. There's no indication of
01:36:12any connection in Halifax, for example. There's also no
01:36:15evidence of gunfire or firearm seized. No charges related to
01:36:19bomb making or explosives either. Also,
01:36:21the Halifax prosecutor told the court he hadn't decided whether
01:36:24he would oppose bail in this case. And normally,
01:36:27if there were a national security element to a case like
01:36:30this, you would expect pretty
01:36:31automatic romantic custody, which is what we saw in Toronto.

01:36:39Ottawa police are continuing to investigate after shots were
01:36:42fired here at this Manotick Mall on Monday morning. The
01:36:45incident has residents thinking about their safety. I think
01:36:49Niantic's a great place to live and I think it's going to
01:36:52continue to be safe and we all just keep our eyes open a
01:36:56little bit more. Police were called to this bank around
01:36:5910:30 AM. Investigators say a seller arranged to meet a
01:37:03potential buyer on Facebook Marketplace. The male allegedly
01:37:06pointed a firearm and tried to rob the seller.
01:37:09Two shots were fired but nobody was struck. Youth offender was
01:37:13taken into custody by a security guard,
01:37:15an off duty police officer and the seller. He sustained minor
01:37:19injuries. It's a growing concern. It's it's pretty
01:37:22consistent with us for the last couple of years. We get,
01:37:25you know, multiple reports weekly,
01:37:27monthly involving Facebook marketplace,
01:37:29Kijiji robberies. Ottawa police recommend using one of their
01:37:33official secure locations. There are 5 around the city.
01:37:36Police say these have cameras and are more secure than other
01:37:40public spots. People forever reason put down their guard with Facebook
01:37:44robberies, Facebook marketplace purchases.
01:37:46You know, you're not gonna invite a
01:37:48stranger in off the road, bring them to your house and
01:37:51basically open up the safety of your house to someone you don't
01:37:55know. And people, we are seeing people doing that
01:37:57for these. So that's why we really encourage people not to
01:38:00allow people into their houses and do it in a safe location.
01:38:04In Manotick, residents were happy to see
01:38:06more police around after the shooting. It's probably just to
01:38:09show us that there's presence of
01:38:11based in Manotick, which as I was speaking to
01:38:14another person in the parking lot,
01:38:16we don't often see police officers circulating in Ottawa
01:38:19or in Mantika should say. So that was a little unusual for
01:38:23me to see. I just saw I was coming from the bank. I saw two
01:38:27police cars. And of course then I don't know if this is going
01:38:30to be a regular thing the, the police on the horses,
01:38:33but it's very nice to see. Never used to see that before
01:38:37all the police presence. But I'm glad to see you. I'm a
01:38:40resident now for 28 years or so, so
01:38:42anything is changing with the volume of people and such and
01:38:46we are seeing more incidences that we are not used to in
01:38:50magnetic. What's that like for you?
01:38:52It says a long time resident. It's disconcerning honestly. We
01:38:56liked our little village the way it was and now it is
01:39:00changing. Magnetic businesses and community groups are
01:39:03planning to meet with police in October to further discuss
01:39:07public safety.

01:41:44Throughout this year's wildfires, NBC,
01:41:46CBC News has been covering powerful,
01:41:49urgent and often highly emotional stories of those
01:41:53affected by tragedy. It can often be a difficult experience
01:41:57for reporters, having to capture moments of
01:42:00human trauma and suffering. To give us some insight into how
01:42:04the explosive fires are affecting residents across the
01:42:08province is Ben Nelms, a photojournalist here at CBC
01:42:12who recently came back
01:42:14from the summer land area where we know there is a large
01:42:30differently. I tend to look at it as knowing what not to take
01:42:34a photo of. I find that's easier,
01:42:36especially when you cover wildlife or wildfires and
01:42:40traumatic events can be very overwhelming. And there's a lot
01:42:44going on and it's very easy just to stop and
01:42:47sort of just look around and you kind of get into a hypnotic
01:42:51state. I tend to try and focus by just looking for that human
01:42:54element. That human element is so important for
01:42:57photojournalism, and it's really what transforms
01:43:00simple documentation into something that's enduring and
01:43:13possible to the the people in the photograph. People is
01:43:16really what drives stories
01:43:18and and pictures without people or are just postcards and I'm
01:43:21not here to make postcards. I tend to be attracted to human
01:43:25interaction and and how people are affected by wildfires. So
01:43:29not just showing the smoke and the flames,
01:43:31but showing how this is affecting people in communities.
01:43:35And you have spent some time near Summerland where we have a
01:43:38a very large wildfire that has been quite dynamic,
01:43:41lots of evacuation orders, thousands of residents being
01:43:58took quite early on, on Saturday morning. I got
01:44:01there quite early into summer land. And that's very important
01:44:04in, in this business. It's that you
01:44:06have to be there when everything's happening. You
01:44:09can't be late. And if you're late,
01:44:11you're not going to be able to get close enough. This photo
01:44:15was taken on a Ridge that I found that was safe,
01:44:18had a good exit plan
01:44:19is in. In situations like this, you always need to be thinking
01:44:23about safety, but you're also there to do a
01:44:25job. You're also there to show the public what's going on and
01:44:29show them things that they cannot see. This was Ridge in
01:44:32Summerland where the fire was coming down and there was local
01:44:35fire crews and BC wildfire crews trying to contain that so
01:44:56it doesn't only just take pictures for me. And it also
01:44:59helps me sort of shield from those moments and,
01:45:02and focus on things that, you know,
01:45:04sort of take my mind away from being in the moment too much
01:45:08because it's I'm a very empathetic person. I'm very
01:45:11sensitive. And I find that walking that that line between
01:45:14documenting and also being very empathetic to the subjects is,
01:45:18is very important. So I use that as a tool
01:45:20to do that. So here we have a photo of a young girl on a
01:45:23scooter, obviously with the mask,
01:45:25I'm assuming because of the smoke. Hmm. Yeah,
01:45:28because of the smoke. And this is just a sense of place that
01:45:31I'm trying to convey to the audience. We're all aware or
01:45:34people that go to Penticton know of this Peach mostly
01:45:37because it's, you know, right on the boardwalk and and
01:45:40right on the the the lake. In this time, I'm showing people,
01:45:43you know, the unexpected and sort of how
01:45:45people go on with their daily lives,
01:45:47even dealing with these fires that are just kilometers away.
01:45:51And finally, let's bring up your last photo
01:45:53here. This is one that really, really touched my heart. You
01:45:57know, we see the anguish. We see the
01:45:59pain in this gentlemen's face and surrounded by goats. Give
01:46:02us some context on this. Yeah, Well,
01:46:04I think the reason that the audience resonates,
01:46:07people resonate with this photo is because it tells a story in
01:46:11one image, which is, you know, like a reporter tries to tell
01:46:14us the story in one line. The lead. I'm trying to tell the
01:46:18story in one single frame. You know, the smoke filled air,
01:46:21the emotion with the evacuees and, and the animals that are really
01:46:25caught up in the middle of it all. It's it's very powerful to
01:46:35the evacuation centre in Penticton where you saw both
01:46:38animals and humans, animals, trailers of horses and, and,
01:46:42and you know, the people that own this
01:46:44livestock and, and that is their goal of
01:46:46trying to save them because these wildfires affect much
01:49:04with their personal finances. Consumer insolvency rates are
01:49:08up. According to the latest numbers from the Office of the
01:49:12Superintendent of Bankruptcy, more than 37,
01:49:14000 Canadians filed for insolvency in the first quarter
01:49:18of 2026. Compared at the same time period last year,
01:49:21insolvencies are now up 8.5%.
01:49:23So I want to get more analysis on all of this with Blair
01:49:26Manton. He is president of a Sands and Associates,
01:49:28the debt relief firm and largest network of licensed
01:49:31insolvency trustees in British Columbia and they help people
01:49:34and small businesses with government qualified debt
01:49:44are going to be listening to with some interest because I
01:49:47mean, well, you tell me, what does this tell us about
01:49:50how Canadians are or what the state of Canadians pocketbooks
01:49:53are right now? The fact that
01:49:54we're seeing this rise, well, I'm so thrilled to be with you
01:49:57today because there's so much shame and stigma about being in
01:50:00debt. And a lot of people feel like they're alone. They've
01:50:03made some bad decisions. They really suffer alone and in
01:50:05silence, often for far too long. But I
01:50:07think people need to know this is a very widespread problem
01:50:10right now, you know, going up 8% nationally,
01:50:12even higher than that in BC. What I'm seeing day-to-day is
01:50:15the consumer is suffering like never before. And you know,
01:50:18the main driver of what I'm seeing is cost of living. So
01:50:20especially in the Lower Mainland here,
01:50:22folks are spending so much of their income on rent
01:50:25that there's a small gap in the budget every month that's often
01:50:28filled by credit. And eventually that credit can
01:50:30snowball to a point where it's out of control. Can you talk to
01:50:33me about insolvency versus bankruptcy? Like,
01:50:34what does this actually mean if somebody is finding them in a
01:50:37situation where they are insolvent? Yeah,
01:50:39I'm so happy we can kind of unpack that a little bit
01:50:42because sometimes people just read a headline. I think
01:50:44bankruptcies are through the roof. It's not that case at all.
01:50:47The vast majority of people, sometimes 9 and out of 10
01:50:49people in some provinces, certainly within BC,
01:50:51they're not filing for bankruptcy at all. They're doing what's called consumer proposal.
01:50:55So they're both remedies when you find yourself in solvent.
01:50:58Insolvent means you have more depth than you're able to pay. OK, that's just the term. Just
01:51:02because you're insolvent doesn't mean that you've done a
01:51:04bankruptcy or proposal. But the numbers we're talking about
01:51:07means that you have taken a positive step to deal with your
01:51:09debt. Most people know when you file a bankruptcy,
01:51:11you're throwing your arms up saying I can't do anything,
01:51:14I can't pay the debt back, I need relief. What people
01:51:16don't always know about is a consumer proposal where you
01:51:18make a deal with your creditors. You say, hey, I could go bankrupt, you might end up with nothing
01:51:22back. Let's make a deal where I'm gonna pay 0 interest because the interest at 20 or 30% is what
01:51:26it really drives people, you know, crazy knowing you make payments every month,
01:51:30the debt doesn't go down. So a proposal brings the debt,
01:51:32the interest down to zero and then you pay back what you can
01:51:35afford. Often it's about $0.30 on the dollar or something like
01:51:38that. And people have no idea these options exist. So they
01:51:40often suffer, maybe do things they shouldn't
01:51:42do to try to get out of debt. And they need to know more that
01:51:45there are really good regulated options that can help them move
01:51:48forward. And if somebody is watching and says, you know,
01:51:50I've been having trouble paying my bills, does that mean they're insolvent?
01:51:54At what point do they know that this is something that you know
01:51:56they should? Your advice here, I think anyone that feels like
01:51:59they have a debt problem, it's worth having a conversation with a professional to just know
01:52:03what's out there. Sometimes there's a small budgetary
01:52:06adjustment they can make. Sometimes people are really on
01:52:08the verge of doing something. They could really hurt them
01:52:10financially. I see people cashing in RRSP's because
01:52:13they're told by a creditor, sometimes a collection agent,
01:52:15I'm coming to get those RSP's, you better cash them in or I'm
01:52:18going to take them anyway. They're federally protected
01:52:20asset. No one can ever force you to cash in your retirement.
01:52:23But if you do that without knowing the rules around it,
01:52:25there's nothing that can be done. So I think people need to know there's good
01:52:29options. You can get all the information that you need. And the government created these really good options,
01:52:33like a proposal or a bankruptcy to help people in tough
01:52:35situations. That's exactly what we're seeing now,
01:52:37a lot of people in really tough situations. Right. OK. Well,
01:52:40let me talk about that a little bit. I mean,
01:52:42what does the data say about the current state of the
01:52:44Canadian economy? You say that you are seeing
01:52:46people who are struggling with the cost of living. Yeah, well,
01:52:49absolutely. And we served our client base for the last 15
01:52:51years and every year up until last year. The number one
01:52:53reason why people said they were in trouble is they blamed
01:52:56themselves. They said, you know, mismanagement. I overextended myself too much
01:53:00credit the last two years. Now people have said the number one
01:53:02reason is cost of living. So I see day in,
01:53:05day out in our office as someone is earning 3035 hundred
01:53:08a month after taxes, their rent is now 2025 hundred.
01:53:10So you can imagine your rent should be about a third of your
01:53:13income, not 50% or 2/3. As soon as it's
01:53:15in that position, you've lost all flexibility. So
01:53:18if something happens like a job loss, income interruption,
01:53:21maybe a sickness, you know, there's no emergency fund,
01:53:24there's no safety net. You know, people really have to rely on
01:53:27credit and then after they're out of that tough time,
01:53:30if the credit needs to be paid and at 20% interest compounding
01:53:33every month, it can be really tough to get
01:53:35out of people who do, you know, make that insolvency process or
01:53:38take that step toward it. What are some of the fears that they
01:53:41talk about? What are they afraid of? Yeah,
01:53:43everyone's afraid, obviously that everyones gonna
01:53:45know, First off, and it's not a public thing. You know, if there were newspapers that
01:53:49publish every insolvency, there be nothing else in the
01:53:52newspaper. There's that many. There's, you know, 120,
01:53:54000 or so per year in Canada. So it's a very private process
01:53:57for the most part. A lot of times people are worried
01:53:59they're never going to recover from an insolvency.
01:54:02Everyone says your credit is destroyed for the rest of your
01:54:05life. Complete lie. The longest anything ever gonna be negative
01:54:07on your credit is for six years and a proposal, for example,
01:54:10if you do that, you haven't filed A bankruptcy.
01:54:12You can say no to that question. Have you ever filed bankruptcy
01:54:15for the rest of your life? And the proposal is going to
01:54:18clear off your credit a year after you pay it off. So it's
01:54:21not a life sentence by any means. So the vast majority of
01:54:23people I see if we sit down with them and game out two
01:54:26scenarios. 1 is to keep doing what you're doing. Keep making
01:54:28those minimum payments. You'll be paying off even 5 or $6000 of debt for decades or
01:54:32we say, let's do a proposal. Your credit is going to take a temporary set back, but my gosh,
01:54:36you'll be out of debt. You can save some money. You can get
01:54:39ready for that mortgage in the future that you're going towards, which you're never able to save
01:54:42money if you just got this debt burden that you're just rolling
01:54:45over each month. Blairmont and president of Sands and
01:54:52Canada has a plan to lower grocery prices,
01:54:54and it involves spending big on food terminals. But what are
01:54:57they and can they lower your grocery bill?
01:54:59Right now we're at the Ontario Food Terminal in Etobicoke,
01:55:02the largest food terminal in Canada. Food terminals are
01:55:05basically wholesale markets where fresh produce gets bought
01:55:08and sold in bulk. Farmers and food producers show up every
01:55:11morning to sell to places like brochures,
01:55:13restaurants and hospitals. The Ontario Food Terminal says an
01:55:17average of £5.6 million of products, mostly fruits,
01:55:19vegetables, sometimes flowers, are distributed
01:55:22year daily. That's roughly the weight of 175 fully loaded
01:55:25school buses. Last month, the federal government
01:55:28announced a national food security strategy that commits
01:55:31to spending $3.2 billion over a decade to give consumers more
01:55:35choice and produce more in Canada. 1 billion of it is
01:55:38going towards a Food Link fund. That money will go towards
01:55:42expanding the Ontario Food Terminal,
01:55:44building 2 new food terminals elsewhere in Canada and growing
01:55:48or launching around 10 smaller food hubs. So why are all of a
01:55:51sudden spending so much on food terminals? The government's argument is
01:55:55that there isn't enough competition in the grocery
01:55:58sector. Right now we have a grocery oligopoly. There are 5
01:56:01big grocery chains, Loblaws, Sobeys, Metro,
01:56:03Walmart and Costco that make up about 75% of sales. Those major
01:56:07grocers don't need to rely on food terminals. Many have their
01:56:10own private supply chains to buy from. Ontario independent
01:56:13grocers don't have that. They can either buy from the five
01:56:16big chains or go to the food terminal here in Toronto. The
01:56:20government's logic is the more food terminals, the more competition
01:56:23among producers and farmers, in theory making it cheaper for
01:56:26small grocers to buy the produce they need and pass
01:56:29savings along to consumers. Little Harvest Market is an
01:56:32independent grocer in Toronto. There are no stranger to the
01:56:35Ontario Food Terminal. We always look for the Quebec
01:56:38strawberries. There's limited stock,
01:56:40so we have to go and like fight for it. We asked them about the
01:56:43Ontario Food Terminal expansions. Will that help your
01:56:46business? I believe so. Expanding the
01:56:48food terminal means that there will be more space for
01:56:50suppliers, maybe more farmers can come in and that will give us a greater
01:56:54selection and we may be able to negotiate better pricing. What
01:56:58does the food terminal offer you that going to your
01:57:01competitors supply chains don't? We have greater access to
01:57:04variety. We can choose the freshest. We taste them,
01:57:07we smell them, we look at them and check the
01:57:09quality. Is it also cheaper for you?
01:57:11It depends on the time of the year. In the summer when a
01:57:15produce, Canadian produce is abundant,
01:57:17then yes, it can be very cheap. In the
01:57:19winter is when I think we all know that lettuce can go up to
01:57:22like 10 bucks and that's the biggest difference.
01:57:25It is not consistent, but I do think that the
01:57:28increase in infrastructure bringing in more competition
01:57:31will help with stabilizing prices year round. So what does
01:57:34this mean for sellers? I think that there's a good
01:57:37chance that it becomes more competitive and more
01:57:40potentially more difficult for our business. But I still
01:57:43continue to believe that if more Canadians are eating more
01:57:46produce that we all benefit, You know what's going on with
01:57:49the US right now. I think we gotta rely more on our Canadian
01:57:53farmers that we can, you know, grow stuff all year,
01:57:56you know, that we don't need to states
01:57:58anymore that we can rely on Canada here. It's still unclear
01:58:02the exact changes that the Ontario Food Terminal expansion
01:58:05will include, but some are hoping it can mean
01:58:08better infrastructure. I imagine being here when it's
01:58:11-20 outside, then some customers stay inside.
01:58:14Or if we would have a facility for the farmer,
01:58:17then the customers I'm hoping would be coming to us since
01:58:20we're not standing outside with -20 But can these food
01:58:23terminals actually lower your grocery bill? To say
01:58:26beyond reasonable doubt that prices will drop is is close to
01:58:30impossible. This food researcher says grocery prices
01:58:33are affected by a bunch of factors like climate,
01:58:36seasonality, packaging on farm costs,
01:58:38transportation, and even currency. But creating
01:58:41food terminals could reduce price volatility. That's when
01:58:44prices go up and down for a particular product. You see,
01:58:47the food terminal is, is a marketplace. It allows for
01:58:51exchanges to kill between supply and demand. So you
01:58:54increase chances for exchanges to occur. When you do that,
01:58:57you
01:58:58price competition, and when competition goes up,
01:59:01prices tend to stabilize. Not always go down,

02:08:13mother stayed at her brothers house Monday night,
02:08:17afraid to return home. They've been checking with
02:08:20engineers who knows about it to see if the structure is
02:08:25affected, affected or not. Still,

02:10:01calling out scallops being fished in Canadian waters near
02:10:05the state of Maine. There were taken from the Georges Banks
02:10:08just about the amount we import from Canada driving up our
02:10:12trade deficit and we couldn't take scallops on our side of
02:10:15the Georges Banks
02:10:17this crazy stuff. But this expert says Canada has leverage,
02:10:20especially ahead of the falls US midterms. The election main
02:10:24messages are around affordability and really high
02:10:28energy costs here in the United States. I think that's why
02:10:32we're seeing a a good faith negotiation it appears going on
02:10:36with the US, but Canada has been here before.
02:10:39The two sides were reportedly close to a deal last fall
02:10:42before Trump called off trade talks entirely. Regardless of
02:10:46progress, it really does come back to him.
02:10:49So OK with the goal being early next week,
02:10:52Leblon is staying in Washington to keep up talks. Yeah. And so
02:10:55is Canada's trade negotiator, Jenna Charette. They and their
02:10:59teams have been trying to sort out technical details. We don't

02:24:03decades. Why Greenland this year
02:24:07hadn't been there before? You've been almost everywhere
02:24:11else in the world. How many eclipses is this for you?
02:24:142 now
02:24:16#26 in total eclipses. Wow, that is
02:24:24you've spent many years working as a meteorologist as the go to
02:24:29weather experts on eclipses. What happens when you have to
02:24:37you can't on the boat, of course,
02:24:39but over the years was was it disappointing sometimes?
02:24:45Oh, yeah. So we've had our
02:24:47disappointments. And actually here we're kind of running to
02:24:51find clear skies right now on off the coast of Greenland.
02:24:55It's there's not too many openings in the clouds today.
02:24:59But I just heard a discussion on board ship that we're going
02:25:03to head in toward the land into a fiord because may have better
02:25:08weather inside the fjord, but it's a challenge and
02:25:12everybody is watching the sky. If it weren't
02:25:15or a plot of 30 to 60 humpback whales,
02:25:32so long?
02:25:35I think it's because they're just so beautiful and they take
02:25:40you out of your place, your tiny world,
02:25:43and open things up for you. You feel connected to the whole
02:25:47world in the universe and the lighting is amazing. The
02:25:51friends you make are amazing and the places you go to see
02:25:56them are just
02:25:58just so fascinating. Yeah, they check a lot of boxes when
02:26:02if you like to travel and and you want to do it in
02:26:07exotic places in the world, you you end up in a grass shack
02:26:12in Madagascar on a cold night, or you might end up in a luxury
02:26:17hotel in India. It can be everywhere. The Shadow Falls
02:26:21gets you out of the house,
02:26:36travel is a large part of it. And much of the destinations we
02:26:40pick are for the travel. Next year we'll be in Morocco. I
02:26:44haven't been there before. So it's just there's this long
02:26:48string of darkness that goes across the Earth and you just
02:26:52look at what's under it and say, haven't been there,
02:26:56let's go. And and that's the way it happens. Do you
02:27:08That's fantastic, actually, because they have no
02:27:11expectation. They have sort of, they think they know what they
02:27:15might see, but they don't really know. And
02:27:19then they see it and you're right there and you can. It
02:27:22just builds your own excitement. And I have no problem getting
02:27:27excited. I have problems coming down. But it's just so much fun
02:27:31to be with people who are seeing things for the first
02:27:48like to set up beside somebody who hasn't seen it before just
02:27:52to sort of feed off of their excitement and and joy. And
02:27:56although I certainly have my own,
02:27:58I tend to be a little more
02:28:01blaze about eclipses now after so many of them,
02:28:05looking at them more as a
02:28:19the corona and the chromosphere, but I also carry a little
02:28:23diffraction grating so I can look at the spectrum of colours
02:28:28in the eclipse and things like that. And that's a dimension
02:28:33that most people, you know, it uses up time. We have two
02:28:37minutes and 15 seconds at best. And boy,
02:28:40you can't spend a lot of time experimenting in 2 minutes and
02:29:01The fact that it went over us. It's going,
02:29:04it just went over with once you see one,
02:29:07it's kind of like like candy or the best apple you ever had.
02:29:11You need it again. And so you just go a little further and
02:29:16then you've seen two and you think, wow,
02:29:18that would be cool. And the next one,
02:29:21almost the the minute totality is over,
02:29:24people are starting to talk about the next one. You can't
02:29:28just eat just one,
02:29:36it's so rare that we can experience something joyful and
02:29:41wondrous, isn't it?
02:29:45It is we, we have 90 people with our
02:29:49group on this boat. We probably know half of them.
02:29:56Wow. And some of them we know very well. So Eclipse Chasing
02:30:00is not only a a world adventure, it's a people adventure in a
02:30:05way. It's so nice to arrive at a place and have good friends,
02:30:09you know, not just acquaintances,
02:32:45Your search master alone
02:32:47A difficile Montreal's police chief says he vows to make
02:32:50things right as the community confronts him over the alleged
02:32:54actions of 16 of his officers. Confidence in police marred by
02:32:58the ongoing investigation
02:33:02outside City Hall, frustration and anger from
02:33:05those who couldn't get in. Others expressed some hope.
02:33:09We're happy to see that something is being done.
02:33:12Although it took other police for this to happen,
02:33:16having the opportunity to talk about it,
02:33:18I think this is a positive change for the future.
02:33:22According to Hado Canada sources,
02:33:24the officers were accused of random stops based solely on
02:33:28ethnicity and cutting off dreadlocks, then taking them
02:33:32as trophies. The claims were first made public back in June
02:33:36after fellow officers made complaints. The news explosive
02:33:40to some, including the mayor. Many
02:33:42Montrealers have lost confidence and it is upon us to
02:33:45make sure that we are working with the SVM to rebuild that
02:33:49trust. But for some community organizers,
02:33:52the allegations aren't a surprise. And they say action
02:33:56is more important than words. People say, look,
02:33:59we've known this situation that exists for years,
02:34:02we will lift it. We don't want to go back and, you know,
02:34:05rehash these things. We want solutions. And when we talk
02:34:09about solution, we have to talk about something
02:34:11future oriented, something concrete.
02:34:14The police chief saying that's exactly what this public
02:34:18meeting was about, to speak directly with community members.
02:34:22And Sarah, there are calls for actions. So
02:34:24what are people asking for? Well,
02:34:27the police chief says there are a number of measures already in
02:34:31place, collaboration with community
02:34:33organizations, continued sensitivity training.
02:34:36He said it was important to move forward with what he said
02:34:40was transparency and humility. But that was really put to the
02:34:44test at this meeting where few answers were given and people
02:34:48felt they really had little time to speak.
02:34:57Evan, walk us through what we know so
02:34:58far about this case. We don't know anything about the nature
02:35:01of the threat or exactly how it was communicated,
02:35:04but it was received by the US Consulate in Halifax late
02:35:07Sunday afternoon. Police identified A suspect,
02:35:1054 year old Ali Asakura, and just after 8:00 on Monday
02:35:13morning, they found a car belonging to
02:35:15him in a downtown parking garage that appeared to contain
02:35:18a propane tank and containers of a flammable liquid and that
02:35:22led Halifax police to shut down several streets around Halifax
02:35:25Harbor. That car was later determined not to pose a threat to public safety,
02:35:29but as Accurate has now made an initial appearance in
02:35:32provincial court on charges of uttering threats and public
02:35:35mischief. The Crown, though, didn't want to go any further
02:35:38yet. The Crown requested an adjournment under 516 of the
02:35:42Criminal Code. And that just gives the police more time to
02:35:45complete that investigation and to see if there's going to be
02:35:48more charges to be laid now. In Corda,
02:35:51Zachary laid out a series of complaints through an
02:35:54interpreter, among them that his family had
02:35:56been victims of discrimination. Now,
02:35:58there have been shooting attacks on the US consulate in
02:36:02Toronto and allegations that Iran linked groups might have
02:36:05paid guns for hire to carry those out. But there's no
02:36:08suggestion this case might be
02:36:10connected, right? Right. There's no indication of
02:36:12any connection in Halifax, for example. There's also no
02:36:15evidence of gunfire or firearm seized. No charges related to
02:36:19bomb making or explosives either. Also,
02:36:21the Halifax prosecutor told the court he hadn't decided whether
02:36:24he would oppose bail in this case. And normally,
02:36:27if there were a national security element to a case like
02:36:30this, you would expect pretty
02:36:31automatic romantic custody, which is what we saw in Toronto.
02:36:39Ottawa police are continuing to investigate after shots were
02:36:42fired here at this Manotick Mall on Monday morning. The
02:36:45incident has residents thinking about their safety. I think
02:36:49Niantic's a great place to live and I think it's going to
02:36:52continue to be safe and we all just keep our eyes open a
02:36:56little bit more. Police were called to this bank around
02:36:5910:30 AM. Investigators say a seller arranged to meet a
02:37:03potential buyer on Facebook Marketplace. The male allegedly
02:37:06pointed a firearm and tried to rob the seller.
02:37:09Two shots were fired but nobody was struck. Youth offender was
02:37:13taken into custody by a security guard,
02:37:15an off duty police officer and the seller. He sustained minor
02:37:19injuries. It's a growing concern. It's it's pretty
02:37:22consistent with us for the last couple of years. We get,
02:37:25you know, multiple reports weekly,
02:37:27monthly involving Facebook marketplace,
02:37:29Kijiji robberies. Ottawa police recommend using one of their
02:37:33official secure locations. There are 5 around the city.
02:37:36Police say these have cameras and are more secure than other
02:37:40public spots. People forever reason put down their guard with Facebook
02:37:44robberies, Facebook marketplace purchases.
02:37:46You know, you're not gonna invite a
02:37:48stranger in off the road, bring them to your house and
02:37:51basically open up the safety of your house to someone you don't
02:37:55know. And people, we are seeing people doing that
02:37:57for these. So that's why we really encourage people not to
02:38:01allow people into their houses and do it in a safe location.
02:38:04In Manotick, residents were happy to see
02:38:06more police around after the shooting. It's probably just to
02:38:09show us that there's presence of
02:38:11based in Manotick, which as I was speaking to
02:38:14another person in the parking lot,
02:38:16we don't often see police officers circulating in Ottawa
02:38:19or in Mantika should say. So that was a little unusual for
02:38:23me to see. I just saw I was coming from the bank. I saw two
02:38:26police cars. And of course then I don't know if this is going
02:38:30to be a regular thing the, the police on the horses,
02:38:33but it's very nice to see. Never used to see that before
02:38:37all the police presence. But I'm glad to see you. I'm a
02:38:40resident now for 28 years or so, so
02:38:42anything is changing with the volume of people and such and
02:38:46we are seeing more incidences that we are not used to in
02:38:50magnetic. What's that like for you?
02:38:52It says a long time resident. It's disconcerning honestly. We
02:38:56liked our little village the way it was and now it is
02:39:00changing. Magnetic businesses and community groups are
02:39:03planning to meet with police in October to further discuss
02:39:07public safety.

02:41:44Throughout this year's wildfires, NBC,
02:41:46CBC News has been covering powerful,
02:41:49urgent and often highly emotional stories of those
02:41:53affected by tragedy. It can often be a difficult experience
02:41:57for reporters, having to capture moments of
02:42:00human trauma and suffering. To give us some insight into how
02:42:04the explosive fires are affecting residents across the
02:42:08province is Ben Nelms, a photojournalist here at CBC
02:42:12who recently came back
02:42:14from the summer land area where we know there is a large
02:42:30differently. I tend to look at it as knowing what not to take
02:42:34a photo of. I find that's easier,
02:42:36especially when you cover wildlife or wildfires and
02:42:40traumatic events can be very overwhelming. And there's a lot
02:42:44going on and it's very easy just to stop and
02:42:47sort of just look around and you kind of get into a hypnotic
02:42:51state. I tend to try and focus by just looking for that human
02:42:54element. That human element is so important for
02:42:57photojournalism, and it's really what transforms
02:43:00simple documentation into something that's enduring and
02:43:13possible to the the people in the photograph. People is
02:43:16really what drives stories
02:43:18and and pictures without people or are just postcards and I'm
02:43:21not here to make postcards. I tend to be attracted to human
02:43:25interaction and and how people are affected by wildfires. So
02:43:29not just showing the smoke and the flames,
02:43:31but showing how this is affecting people in communities.
02:43:35And you have spent some time near Summerland where we have a
02:43:38a very large wildfire that has been quite dynamic,
02:43:41lots of evacuation orders, thousands of residents being
02:44:01there quite early into summer land. And that's very important
02:44:04in, in this business. It's that you
02:44:06have to be there when everything's happening. You
02:44:09can't be late. And if you're late,
02:44:11you're not going to be able to get close enough. This photo
02:44:15was taken on a Ridge that I found that was safe,
02:44:18had a good exit plan
02:44:19is in. In situations like this, you always need to be thinking
02:44:23about safety, but you're also there to do a
02:44:25job. You're also there to show the public what's going on and
02:44:29show them things that they cannot see. This was Ridge in
02:44:32Summerland where the fire was coming down and there was local
02:44:35fire crews and BC wildfire crews trying to contain that so
02:44:39it doesn't hit the the homes. And they were quite successful
02:44:56it doesn't only just take pictures for me. And it also
02:44:59helps me sort of shield from those moments and,
02:45:02and focus on things that, you know,
02:45:04sort of take my mind away from being in the moment too much
02:45:08because it's I'm a very empathetic person. I'm very
02:45:11sensitive. And I find that walking that that line between
02:45:14documenting and also being very empathetic to the subjects is,
02:45:18is very important. So I use that as a tool
02:45:20to do that. So here we have a photo of a young girl on a
02:45:23scooter, obviously with the mask,
02:45:25I'm assuming because of the smoke. Hmm. Yeah,
02:45:28because of the smoke. And this is just a sense of place that
02:45:31I'm trying to convey to the audience. We're all aware or
02:45:34people that go to Penticton know of this Peach mostly
02:45:37because it's, you know, right on the boardwalk and and
02:45:40right on the the the lake. In this time, I'm showing people,
02:45:43you know, the unexpected and sort of how
02:45:45people go on with their daily lives,
02:45:47even dealing with these fires that are just kilometers away.
02:45:51And finally, let's bring up your last photo
02:45:53here. This is one that really, really touched my heart. You
02:45:57know, we see the anguish. We see the
02:45:59pain in this gentlemen's face and surrounded by goats. Give
02:46:02us some context on this. Yeah, Well,
02:46:04I think the reason that the audience resonates,
02:46:07people resonate with this photo is because it tells a story in
02:46:11one image, which is, you know, like a reporter tries to tell
02:46:14us the story in one line. The lead. I'm trying to tell the
02:46:18story in one single frame. You know, the smoke filled air,
02:46:21the emotion with the evacuees and, and the animals that are really
02:46:25caught up in the middle of it all. It's it's very powerful to
02:46:28see everyone come together. And this is just a moment that
02:46:32happened. And this was actually taken where this was outside
02:46:35the evacuation centre in Penticton where you saw both
02:46:38animals and humans, animals, trailers of horses and, and,
02:46:42and you know, the people that own this
02:46:44livestock and, and that is their goal of
02:46:46trying to save them because these wildfires affect much
02:49:04with their personal finances. Consumer insolvency rates are
02:49:08up. According to the latest numbers from the Office of the
02:49:12Superintendent of Bankruptcy, more than 37,
02:49:14000 Canadians filed for insolvency in the first quarter
02:49:18of 2026. Compared at the same time period last year,
02:49:21insolvencies are now up 8.5%.
02:49:23So I want to get more analysis on all of this with Blair
02:49:26Manton. He is president of a Sands and Associates,
02:49:28the debt relief firm and largest network of licensed
02:49:31insolvency trustees in British Columbia and they help people
02:49:34and small businesses with government qualified debt
02:49:42people who are watching, you know,
02:49:44are going to be listening to with some interest because I
02:49:47mean, well, you tell me, what does this tell us about
02:49:50how Canadians are or what the state of Canadians pocketbooks
02:49:53are right now? The fact that
02:49:54we're seeing this rise, well, I'm so thrilled to be with you
02:49:57today because there's so much shame and stigma about being in
02:50:00debt. And a lot of people feel like they're alone. They've
02:50:03made some bad decisions. They really suffer alone and in
02:50:05silence, often for far too long. But I
02:50:07think people need to know this is a very widespread problem
02:50:10right now, you know, going up 8% nationally,
02:50:12even higher than that in BC. What I'm seeing day-to-day is
02:50:15the consumer is suffering like never before. And you know,
02:50:18the main driver of what I'm seeing is cost of living. So
02:50:20especially in the Lower Mainland here,
02:50:22folks are spending so much of their income on rent
02:50:25that there's a small gap in the budget every month that's often
02:50:28filled by credit. And eventually that credit can
02:50:30snowball to a point where it's out of control. Can you talk to
02:50:33me about insolvency versus bankruptcy? Like,
02:50:34what does this actually mean if somebody is finding them in a
02:50:37situation where they are insolvent? Yeah,
02:50:39I'm so happy we can kind of unpack that a little bit
02:50:41because sometimes people just read a headline. I think
02:50:44bankruptcies are through the roof. It's not that case at all.
02:50:47The vast majority of people, sometimes 9 and out of 10
02:50:49people in some provinces, certainly within BC,
02:50:51they're not filing for bankruptcy at all. They're doing what's called consumer proposal.
02:50:55So they're both remedies when you find yourself in solvent.
02:50:58Insolvent means you have more depth than you're able to pay. OK, that's just the term. Just
02:51:02because you're insolvent doesn't mean that you've done a
02:51:04bankruptcy or proposal. But the numbers we're talking about
02:51:07means that you have taken a positive step to deal with your
02:51:09debt. Most people know when you file a bankruptcy,
02:51:11you're throwing your arms up saying I can't do anything,
02:51:14I can't pay the debt back, I need relief. What people
02:51:16don't always know about is a consumer proposal where you
02:51:18make a deal with your creditors. You say, hey, I could go bankrupt, you might end up with nothing
02:51:22back. Let's make a deal where I'm gonna pay 0 interest because the interest at 20 or 30% is what
02:51:26it really drives people, you know, crazy knowing you make payments every month,
02:51:30the debt doesn't go down. So a proposal brings the debt,
02:51:32the interest down to zero and then you pay back what you can
02:51:35afford. Often it's about $0.30 on the dollar or something like
02:51:38that. And people have no idea these options exist. So they
02:51:40often suffer, maybe do things they shouldn't
02:51:42do to try to get out of debt. And they need to know more that
02:51:45there are really good regulated options that can help them move
02:51:48forward. And if somebody is watching and says, you know,
02:51:50I've been having trouble paying my bills, does that mean they're insolvent?
02:51:54At what point do they know that this is something that you know
02:51:57they should?
02:52:08the verge of doing something. They could really hurt them
02:52:10financially. I see people cashing in RRSP's because
02:52:13they're told by a creditor, sometimes a collection agent,
02:52:15I'm coming to get those RSP's, you better cash them in or I'm
02:52:18going to take them anyway. They're federally protected
02:52:20asset. No one can ever force you to cash in your retirement.
02:52:23But if you do that without knowing the rules around it,
02:52:25there's nothing that can be done. So I think people need to know there's good
02:52:29options. You can get all the information that you need. And the government created these really good options,
02:52:33like a proposal or a bankruptcy to help people in tough
02:52:35situations. That's exactly what we're seeing now,
02:52:37a lot of people in really tough situations. Right. OK. Well,
02:52:40let me talk about that a little bit. I mean,
02:52:42what does the data say about the current state of the
02:52:44Canadian economy? You say that you are seeing
02:52:46people who are struggling with the cost of living. Yeah, well,
02:52:49absolutely. And we served our client base for the last 15
02:52:51years and every year up until last year. The number one
02:52:53reason why people said they were in trouble is they blamed
02:52:56themselves. They said, you know, mismanagement. I overextended myself too much
02:53:00credit the last two years. Now people have said the number one
02:53:02reason is cost of living. So I see day in,
02:53:05day out in our office as someone is earning 3035 hundred
02:53:08a month after taxes, their rent is now 2025 hundred.
02:53:10So you can imagine your rent should be about a third of your
02:53:13income, not 50% or 2/3. As soon as it's
02:53:15in that position, you've lost all flexibility. So
02:53:18if something happens like a job loss, income interruption,
02:53:21maybe a sickness, you know, there's no emergency fund,
02:53:24there's no safety net. You know, people really have to rely on
02:53:27credit and then after they're out of that tough time,
02:53:30if the credit needs to be paid and at 20% interest compounding
02:53:33every month, it can be really tough to get
02:53:35out of people who do, you know, make that insolvency process or
02:53:38take that step toward it. What are some of the fears that they
02:53:57for the most part. A lot of times people are worried
02:53:59they're never going to recover from an insolvency.
02:54:02Everyone says your credit is destroyed for the rest of your
02:54:05life. Complete lie. The longest anything ever gonna be negative
02:54:07on your credit is for six years and a proposal, for example,
02:54:10if you do that, you haven't filed A bankruptcy.
02:54:12You can say no to that question. Have you ever filed bankruptcy
02:54:15for the rest of your life? And the proposal is going to
02:54:18clear off your credit a year after you pay it off. So it's
02:54:21not a life sentence by any means. So the vast majority of
02:54:23people I see if we sit down with them and game out two
02:54:26scenarios. 1 is to keep doing what you're doing. Keep making
02:54:28those minimum payments. You'll be paying off even 5 or $6000 of debt for decades or
02:54:32we say, let's do a proposal. Your credit is going to take a temporary set back, but my gosh,
02:54:36you'll be out of debt. You can save some money. You can get
02:54:39ready for that mortgage in the future that you're going towards, which you're never able to save
02:54:42money if you just got this debt burden that you're just rolling
02:54:45over each month. Blairmont and president of Sands and Associate, that's great advice. Thank you

02:54:59Right now we're at the Ontario Food Terminal in Etobicoke,
02:55:02the largest food terminal in Canada. Food terminals are
02:55:05basically wholesale markets where fresh produce gets bought
02:55:08and sold in bulk. Farmers and food producers show up every
02:55:11morning to sell to places like brochures,
02:55:13restaurants and hospitals. The Ontario Food Terminal says an
02:55:17average of £5.6 million of products, mostly fruits,
02:55:19vegetables, sometimes flowers, are distributed
02:55:22year daily. That's roughly the weight of 175 fully loaded
02:55:25school buses. Last month, the federal government
02:55:28announced a national food security strategy that commits
02:55:31to spending $3.2 billion over a decade to give consumers more
02:55:35choice and produce more in Canada. 1 billion of it is
02:55:38going towards a Food Link fund. That money will go towards
02:55:42expanding the Ontario Food Terminal,
02:55:44building 2 new food terminals elsewhere in Canada and growing
02:55:48or launching around 10 smaller food hubs. So why are all of a
02:55:51sudden spending so much on food terminals? The government's argument is
02:55:55that there isn't enough competition in the grocery
02:55:58sector. Right now we have a grocery oligopoly. There are 5
02:56:01big grocery chains, Loblaws, Sobeys, Metro,
02:56:03Walmart and Costco that make up about 75% of sales. Those major
02:56:07grocers don't need to rely on food terminals. Many have their
02:56:10own private supply chains to buy from. Ontario independent
02:56:13grocers don't have that. They can either buy from the five
02:56:16big chains or go to the food terminal here in Toronto. The
02:56:20government's logic is the more food terminals, the more competition
02:56:23among producers and farmers, in theory making it cheaper for
02:56:26small grocers to buy the produce they need and pass
02:56:29savings along to consumers. Little Harvest Market is an
02:56:32independent grocer in Toronto. There are no stranger to the
02:56:35Ontario Food Terminal. We always look for the Quebec
02:56:38strawberries. There's limited stock,
02:56:40so we have to go and like fight for it. We asked them about the
02:56:43Ontario Food Terminal expansions. Will that help your
02:56:46business? I believe so. Expanding the
02:56:48food terminal means that there will be more space for
02:56:50suppliers, maybe more farmers can come in and that will give us a greater
02:56:54selection and we may be able to negotiate better pricing. What
02:56:58does the food terminal offer you that going to your
02:57:01competitors supply chains don't? We have greater access to
02:57:04variety. We can choose the freshest. We taste them,
02:57:07we smell them, we look at them and check the
02:57:09quality. Is it also cheaper for you?
02:57:11It depends on the time of the year. In the summer when a
02:57:15produce, Canadian produce is abundant,
02:57:17then yes, it can be very cheap. In the
02:57:19winter is when I think we all know that lettuce can go up to
02:57:22like 10 bucks and that's the biggest difference.
02:57:25It is not consistent, but I do think that the
02:57:28increase in infrastructure bringing in more competition
02:57:31will help with stabilizing prices year round. So what does
02:57:34this mean for sellers? I think that there's a good
02:57:37chance that it becomes more competitive and more
02:57:40potentially more difficult for our business. But I still
02:57:43continue to believe that if more Canadians are eating more
02:57:46produce that we all benefit, You know what's going on with
02:57:49the US right now. I think we gotta rely more on our Canadian
02:57:53farmers that we can, you know, grow stuff all year,
02:57:56you know, that we don't need to states

02:58:44prices go up and down for a particular product. You see,
02:58:47the food terminal is, is a marketplace. It allows for
02:58:51exchanges to kill between supply and demand. So you
02:58:54increase chances for exchanges to occur. When you do that,
