00:25:25For this outdoor adventure company,
00:25:27business in the summer is usually brisk,
00:25:30but it has slowed to a crawl. We've had no business
00:25:34whatsoever this week, only
00:25:37refunds, calling people to refund.
00:25:40That's pretty much it with the deadly Bald Range wildfire
00:25:43burning in BC Southern Interior. The air is thick with smoke,
00:25:47Okanogan beaches that would normally be packed are bare and
00:25:51almost no one is on the water.
00:25:54We have a dozen kayaks and stand up paddle boards and a
00:25:58tough pill to swallow if your company relies on tourism. It's
00:26:02sad that you get to a point where where it's. That's how
00:26:06you have to prepare yourself thinking that fires are a part
00:26:10of the world. But it doesn't make it any easier on the day
00:26:14when no one's renting bikes.
00:26:18This local ice cream shop is feeling the pinch too. Business
00:26:21has dropped at least 90% since the fire erupted. We've already
00:26:25laid off a chunk of our staff. Like knowing that Summerland
00:26:28isn't going to reopen right away. And we have entrepreneurs.
00:26:32We don't have the big, big businesses that can really
00:26:35hang on. So if this is a really important time for for our
00:26:39small business community to be making money. Roughly 12,
00:26:42000 people on evacuation order have no timeline on when they
00:26:46can go home. But with hot temperatures,
00:26:48gusty winds and a chance of thunderstorms,
00:26:51officials warn fires could intensify.
00:26:55Evacuees like Christine Coletta are trying to find ways to pass
00:26:59the time. These grapevines remind Coletta of her vineyard
00:27:03inside Summerland she worries about the tourists she's losing
00:27:07out on. About 35% of our total sales for the year come from
00:27:11what we call the tasting room. If we can't get in and open the
00:27:15tasting room and get our staff back in place,
00:27:18we're going to miss seeing thousands of people from now
00:27:21until the end of October.
00:27:24For businesses inside and outside the evacuation zone,
00:27:27they're taking it one day at a time,
00:27:29hoping things get back to normal soon. And Julia,
00:27:32some movement tonight on road closures in the area. That's
00:27:35right. So Hwy. 97, which you can see behind me,
00:27:38it runs through summer land and it has reopened. But traffic is
00:27:42only allowed between the hours of 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM. And
00:27:45drivers are not allowed to stop or exit the highway without a
00:27:48temporary access pass. The regional district saying that
00:27:52if drivers don't follow the rules, the highway could shut down
00:27:55again. Julia Wong in Penticton, BC tonight.
00:28:02Wildfires are burning across BC and homes have been destroyed.
00:28:06So what do you do if you found out you've lost everything?
00:28:09The first step would be to contact your insurance company
00:28:13and get that process started. Experts say if you have home
00:28:16insurance, you're likely covered for
00:28:18wildfire damage and will be reimbursed for living expenses.
00:28:22Things like hotel rooms, things like food where you're
00:28:25forced outside your home, things like a rental car if you
00:28:28don't have access to your vehicle, taxis,
00:28:31things like that, clothing, household items.
00:28:33But the process to rebuild can be a long one. It's multiple
00:28:37steps and it's a real exercise in patience. But it took two
00:28:40years for Antique Goyer to rebuild from the McDougall
00:28:43Creek wildfire near West Kelowna in 2023. Before the
00:28:46fire hit, she and her husband videotaped
00:28:49the layouts and contents of their entire house,
00:28:51a key step that helped document their losses with the insurance
00:28:55company. We were able to go through each room and then
00:28:58freeze the video and write down all the things that we saw and,
00:29:02and it it's an endless process. But without the videos, you're,
00:29:06you're relying on memories. For people like de Goyer,
00:29:08insurance covered nearly everything except for things
00:29:11like utilities, which she says she would have
00:29:14paid for anyway if her house didn't burn down. But what if
00:29:17you don't have insurance? When you come home and there's
00:29:20nothing left standing and everything is leveled,
00:29:22you don't know where to start. In 2021,
00:29:24Litton and the surrounding areas were devastated,
00:29:27flames destroying almost everything,
00:29:29including the home of Trisha Thorpe. We did not have
00:29:32insurance. We were outside of Fire Protection
00:29:34and we had wood heat. My situation is actually not
00:29:38unique across this province. Many in the community couldn't
00:29:42afford insurance or didn't qualify Thorpe relying on
00:29:45charities, nonprofit organizations and
00:29:48others to rebuild. We had a lot of help from community,
00:29:52from friends, from my family, or we never would have been
00:29:56able to do it. The the resources aren't there for
00:29:59people who lose their homes, at least not from a government
00:30:03perspective. In my opinion.
00:30:05Macy's Emergency Support Services program provides short
00:30:08term help. People can access food, clothing and shelter,
00:30:11but when it comes to long term recovery,
00:30:13that support differs on the event and eventually can run
00:30:16out. It is something that all of us need to spend a few
00:30:19minutes every year just to make sure we have the financial
00:30:22protection in place for our family and for what is likely
00:30:25the biggest financial asset we own,
00:30:27which is our home. With officials still assessing
00:30:30damage and wildfire season not over yet,
00:30:32experts are reminding everyone to review their coverage and plan head.

00:35:18The Ford government has secured a major victory in the ongoing
00:35:20saga related to bike lanes in Toronto. The Ontario Court of
00:35:23Appeal has ruled that removing bike lanes along three major
00:35:27roads in Toronto does not violate Charter rights,
00:35:30a decision that allows the process to go forward. The
00:35:33CBC's Megan Fitzpatrick is following this story for us.
00:35:36She joins us from the Ontario legislature in Toronto. Megan,
00:35:40tell us about this case.
00:35:43Well, it dates back to the fall of
00:35:452024 when the Ford government passed legislation requiring
00:35:48the removal of these three key bike lanes in downtown Toronto,
00:35:52on Young St. University Ave. and on Bloor St. The Ford
00:35:55government argued at the time that those bike lanes were
00:35:59causing and contributing to traffic congestion in the city
00:36:02and that bike lanes don't belong on those main roads,
00:36:05but rather they should go on secondary roads. So it gave
00:36:09itself the power to remove these bike lanes in the city of
00:36:12Toronto.
00:36:14But that was challenged in court by a group called Cycle
00:36:16Toronto, along with two cyclists who
00:36:19used these bike lanes. They argued that this law violated
00:36:22their rights under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms,
00:36:26their right to security of the person and their right to life.
00:36:30They won in court last July, in July of 2025. So a judge in
00:36:34that case deemed the provincial law unconstitutional. But then
00:36:38the Ford government appealed that loss to the Ontario Court
00:36:42of Appeal and so today
00:36:43the Ontario Court of Appeal overturning that lower court
00:36:47judge judges decision saying that he aired in his decision
00:36:51and this Court of Appeal saying the law is not unconstitutional.
00:36:55I'm just going to read a key paragraph from the ruling. It
00:36:59says the Charter of Rights and Freedoms does not require the
00:37:03legislature to establish bike lanes. Thus,
00:37:06the Ontario legislature is as free to establish bike lanes as
00:37:10it is to remove them or authorize their removal.
00:37:14The Charter has nothing to say about whether bicycle lanes are
00:37:17a good idea or a bad idea, wise or unwise policy. These
00:37:20judgments are no business of the courts. So quite a
00:37:23different decision, Karina, than the lower court had
00:37:26decided. And with this Court of Appeal decision,
00:37:29it does give the green light to the Ford government to proceed
00:37:33with its plan to remove these bike lanes. So what reaction
00:37:36are you seeing so far?
00:37:39Well, the Ford government is
00:37:41certainly celebrating this as a victory. We have a statement
00:37:45from the Transportation Minister,
00:37:46Pragmat Sarkaria. Let's take a look at what it says. In part,
00:37:50it reads. Today's court ruling is a victory for common sense
00:37:54and for respecting the appropriate division of roles
00:37:57between duly elected legislators and the courts.
00:37:59We've always been clear bike lanes should go where they make
00:38:03sense on secondary roads, not at the expense of vehicle
00:38:06lanes on our busiest streets. And we're also seeing some
00:38:10reaction from the group that brought the court challenge in the 1st
00:38:13place, Karina and their lawyers. They
00:38:16say that bike lanes save lives and that they will try and
00:38:19continue their fight for cyclist safety. Here's a from
00:38:22part of a statement from the executive director at Cycle
00:38:26Toronto. It says bike lanes do not cause traffic congestion.
00:38:29Ripping them out will put people's lives at risk. This
00:38:32legislation isn't sound transportation policy. It's a
00:38:35costly distraction from the government's real
00:38:38responsibilities and stocking a culture war
00:38:40cycle. Toronto intends to keep defending our bike lanes to the
00:38:44full extent of the law. And they also said they hope that
00:38:48the four government, even if it's being given the
00:38:51green light by the courts to do this. They hope they won't do
00:38:55it and that they will abandon this plan. Key question for the
00:38:59group going forward, Karina, is whether they decide to
00:39:02appeal this loss to the Supreme Court of Canada. Thanks very

00:39:23studying in Montreal, but he decided to stay,

00:39:50And he says for students who are still abroad,
00:39:53the stakes are even higher.

00:40:04could be impacted by the restrictions,
00:40:06including the students already enrolled in Quebec and others
00:40:10expected to start this fall. The federal restrictions are
00:40:13currently set to remain in place until August 29th. The
00:40:17university said they're working with the students on different
00:40:20options, including deferring admissions,
00:40:23starting remotely or arriving late depending on their
00:40:26situation. But for these students,
00:40:28the biggest question now is what happens after August 29.
00:40:32Jonathan says he understands why the government put the
00:40:35restrictions in place, but he says students shouldn't
00:40:39have to lose an entire semester or give up seeing their
00:40:42families because of the situation they didn't create.

00:43:05Statements filed in court illustrate the broad and deeply
00:43:09painful impact of the murder of two boys by their father last
00:43:13year. In Saint John's, statements from a school
00:43:16counselor, police officers and the city's
00:43:19former mayor point to the profound grief that shook not
00:43:23just one home or family, but classes, teams,
00:43:26neighborhoods and the region. And a warning. This story
00:43:30contains descriptions of domestic violence.
00:43:33Statements were filed as part of Roman commissioning
00:43:37sentencing. He was found guilty by a jury in June. The 46 year
00:43:41old was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole
00:43:45for 25 years on both counts of first degree murder. He killed
00:43:49his 10 and 17 year old sons on January 29th,
00:43:522025. The boys cannot be named due to a publication ban. Crown
00:43:57prosecutor Elena Campbell said many police officers who dealt
00:44:01with the case were heartbroken, recounting how when several
00:44:05testified
00:44:07they were clearly struggling with what they saw. Saint John
00:44:09Police Detective Constable Dwayne Squire said in a
00:44:13statement his son played on a basketball team,
00:44:15with the youngest victim recounting struggling to
00:44:19explain to his son the murder of his teammate
00:44:22and as an officer being asked to identify the body,
00:44:25he wrote. The moment I recognized him,
00:44:28it felt like the wind had been knocked out of me. I felt anger,
00:44:32disbelief and overwhelming sadness all at once. He said
00:44:36the boy was wearing the same pajamas his son once wore.
00:44:40Lead investigator Detective Constable David McDonald
00:44:43described trying to process the murders of children in such a
00:44:47violent and calculated way for such incomprehensibly selfish
00:44:51reasons and feeling deeply affected by the sheer evilness
00:44:55of commissioner's actions and even his behavior in court.
00:44:59McDonald said he has nightmares seeing the children and not
00:45:03being able to help them. I believe that through his crimes
00:45:07he has created a tremendous negative emotional impact on a
00:45:10whole community of people in Saint John.
00:45:13Saint John High School Counselor Mary Ashton statement
00:45:17talked about an overwhelming trauma for many of the school's
00:45:20students and staff. The teen attended the school and the
00:45:24close knit International Baccalaureate music program
00:45:27experienced an especially profound loss. Former Saint
00:45:30John Mayor Mel Norton read a statement about the broad
00:45:34impact on the community, saying the crimes shocked the
00:45:37conscience and damaged the community sense of safety and
00:45:41challenged its belief that the most vulnerable among us
00:45:44will be protected. Norton said the community response shows
00:45:48the children will not be forgotten. And now, he said,
00:45:51the community must ensure that children are protected,
00:45:55newcomers welcomed and that no one believes they must face
00:45:59fear or suffering alone.

00:48:39Check this out. This is a NASA ER 2A repurposed Cold War spy
00:48:41craft, and it was just tracked flying
00:48:43back and forth over Western Canada for six hours straight.
00:48:47So why is a NASA spy plane flying over Canada?
00:48:49It's up there because of these fire clouds,
00:48:52a phenomenon we don't fully understand. I'll explain.
00:48:55Canada is dealing with explosive wildfires like the
00:48:58Bald Range Fire that erupted in size on August 7th. And NASA
00:49:02sent this high altitude spy plane to track a terrifying
00:49:05weather event born out of the flames
00:49:08cloud called pyro cumulonimbus, or firecloud. Here's how these
00:49:11firestorms work. When a wildfire gets big enough and
00:49:14hot enough in a short amount of time, it triggers giant,
00:49:17violent updrafts. the Super heated air and moisture act
00:49:21like a vacuum, pulling winds and oxygen into
00:49:23the base of the fire, giving it the fuel it needs
00:49:26while punching smoke straight up into the sky. This creates A
00:49:29literal thunderstorm, one that generates its own
00:49:32downbursts, erratic lightning strikes,
00:49:34and even fire tornadoes. It was officially added to the
00:49:37International Cloud Atlas in 2017 as Cumulonimbus Flamm agenus,
00:49:41and scientists have been trying to understand them ever since.
00:49:45Data from the World Climate Research Program shows that
00:49:48these storms act like chimneys. For a long time,
00:49:51scientists thought only big volcanic eruptions or nuclear
00:49:54blasts could force particles into the stratosphere. Now we
00:49:57know these intense pyrocumulus can shoot plumes of black
00:50:01carbon and aerosols up to 16 kilometers into the lower
00:50:04stratosphere, where they stay trapped. And
00:50:06climate change is making these fire cloud
00:50:09producing mega fires occur more often and the most often in
00:50:12Canada, according to the latest
00:50:14research. And that's exactly why NASA is flying a spy plane
00:50:17directly over the smoke at 60, 000 feet. It's a modified
00:50:20Lockheed U2, nicknamed the Dragon Lady,
00:50:22an aircraft used by the US military back in the pre
00:50:25satellite era for exactly this purpose. Studying the ground
00:50:28from incredibly high, the R2 sits safely in the
00:50:31stratosphere looking straight down into the core of the storm.
00:50:35It's measuring the exact height, temperature and thickness of
00:50:38the plume in real time.
00:50:40The goal is to figure out exactly how these firestorms
00:50:42develop so we can forecast them, because understanding this fire
00:50:46monster is the first step to surviving it. Johanna Wagstaff,

00:53:07have to look at the end of Oak St. which is out in movie
00:53:11theatres today. The film sees a family band together after
00:53:14their neighborhood gets transported to a prehistoric
00:53:18land filled with dinosaurs. It stars Anne Hathaway and Ewan
00:53:21McGregor. It's the latest project from director David
00:53:25Robert Mitchell, who is best known for the
00:53:27breakout horror hits It Follows. And the CBC's Jackson Weaver is
00:53:31here to share with us his thoughts on this. OK,
00:53:34so give us a rundown first about the end of Oak St. What
00:53:37is it? I mean, you did a really good job
00:53:40explaining the plot. We were talking a little bit before the
00:53:43cameras started rolling on the difference between horror and
00:53:46action. That's definitely a a crossroads that this film
00:53:49exists at. Now, as you mentioned,
00:53:51this is about a family. They're in the 1980s. There's Audrey
00:53:54played are rather sorry, Denise, played by Anne Hathaway. She is
00:53:58kind of stuck in a not loveless marriage,
00:54:00but a struggling marriage. She wants to be a writer. Her
00:54:03husband's not supporting her. Then we also have the two kids
00:54:06in this film as well. There's Brian played by Christian
00:54:09Convery he's you know, boy next door. He loves his dog.
00:54:12He has a crush in the neighborhood girl. We also have
00:54:15his older sister Audrey played by Maisy Stella. Now side note,
00:54:19CBC, both those names, those last two names Canadian
00:54:22kids maybe tell you may know her from the band Lennon and
00:54:25Maisy Christian convert you might know from sweet tooth
00:54:28that family comes together. They're having all these
00:54:31problems. Then another big problem comes in obviously
00:54:34transported back to the late Jurassic and it does have you
00:54:37know the Jurassic Park elements. It does have the
00:54:40big action he monster elements, but it does definitely have
00:54:43some bleak elements. Some it follows esque elements. As you
00:54:46mentioned there, Robert Mitchell, the director,
00:54:49JJ Abrams is the producer, the mystery,
00:54:51the Cloverfield of it all. So there's a lot going on in this
00:54:54and it is definitely being advertised as you know,
00:54:57the must see event film of the summer. OK, so on that note,
00:55:00then I mean we're kind of running out of time, right,
00:55:03Two weeks until the end of summer, a little a little bit more than that,
00:55:07right. But so is it can it be considered one of the summer
00:55:10blockbusters? Yeah. I mean, I'll get to you a little bit
00:55:13more of that drama element. But we have a lot of dinosaurs
00:55:16running around in this pterodactyls, theropods,
00:55:19therapods and get some odd behavior out of them. I'm not
00:55:21gonna say what it is, but I'm sure after the weekend
00:55:24runs on, you'll be spoiled as to a weird
00:55:26dinosaur thing that happens in this movie. But outside of that
00:55:29lot of action, we have a clip here and you can
00:55:32see what I mean by, you know, I think the Spielberg Ness of
00:55:35it and also the high stakes action of it. The director
00:55:38himself said it's like if Hitchcock made a dinosaur movie,
00:55:41it would be this movie. So let's see if he's right. Let's take a watch at the end of Oak
00:55:45St.

00:56:05So I see you shaking your head. It's a little freaky,
00:56:08it's a little gory and there's definitely some big teeth,
00:56:11big claws going on. That is really what we're ping ponging
00:56:14back and forth in this film. So if you're really into the
00:56:17action, the high stakes you're gripping
00:56:20your arm, arm rests in in the theatre,
00:56:21it definitely delivers on that action. Although if we're going
00:56:24to the other side of of this discussion,
00:56:26the other side of that crossroads was talking about
00:56:28the drama. It might struggle a bit in that,
00:56:30in that element. OK, so you mentioned that you
00:56:33didn't drink a full glass of haterade right before this hit.
00:56:36So tell me a little bit though. You mean you've had a sip?
00:56:38What are the issues with this movie? I mean,
00:56:41I think I have a reputation as being a little bit of a hater.
00:56:44I don't want to be too much of A hater. This is fun. I did
00:56:47have fun. But everyone is comparing this film and I think
00:56:50understandably so in in a like from a conceptual point,
00:56:52this was designed to be what this movie is aping is
00:56:55Spielberg, the Amblin films, the, the Jaws,
00:56:57the Jurassic Park, the 80s nostalgia, the kids on bike solving mysteries,
00:57:01even makes a kind of a thematic introduction in this film. And
00:57:04when it comes to comparing it to that element,
00:57:07I think that's really where it falls flat. The 1st 15 of this
00:57:1015 minutes of this movie really introduces all of the back
00:57:13stories of this, of these characters,
00:57:15the secrets they're hiding from one another,
00:57:17the the foreshadowing of how those characters
00:57:20will develop. And then it's completely abandoned,
00:57:22moving beyond that point. All of the cinematography,
00:57:25the shots, the, if you're a film nerd like me,
00:57:27the split diopter shots, the Dolly zooms, the, the,
00:57:30the shaky Cam, that all, even if you don't know what
00:57:33those things are called, that's split typed on the
00:57:35screen there you'll see it and you be like,
00:57:37I've seen that before. This reminds me of Spielberg,
00:57:40but Spielberg used those intentionally for real reasons.
00:57:43And also more importantly, his films had a point,
00:57:45a purpose, a lens through which all of
00:57:47those elements were viewed. You know, the the the paranoia, the hubris
00:57:51involved in Jaws, the xenophobia and ET
00:57:53extraterrestrials that these are purposes that are imbued
00:57:56into the writing that I think this film is really missing.
00:57:59It's just about here's a dinosaur, here's a chase,
00:58:01here's a high stakes moment with characters that become
00:58:04more and more surface as the film goes on and things feel
00:58:07more and more disjointed for the same reason as the time
00:58:10goes on. I didn't hate this film is sitting next to
00:58:13somebody else who really loves film and they're like,
00:58:16I don't get it. But I was just looking at my watch the whole
00:58:19time. I didn't care about these characters. And I think
00:58:22misunderstanding of what made Spielberg great is why some
00:58:25people might be disconnected from This is why they'll see
00:58:28kind of the the the vision, the the, the vibe,
00:58:30the aesthetics that they know and love,
00:58:33but don't connect to it as deep a level as they would for a
00:58:36real Spielberg film. So for those reasons,
00:58:38it's not my favorite. And even in the action film,
00:58:41I think you want a little bit more deep writing or
00:58:44intentional writing, which I think this does not
00:58:46necessarily going to be imbued with. But all that said,
00:58:49there's still a lot of dinosaurs. And if you like a lot of dinosaurs,
00:58:53he got back with my son. Does what?
00:59:00no love. What is your rating? It's right down the middle of a
00:59:03star rating. I think you might be able to guess what I gave it
00:59:06here. Yeah. Three out of five. Not terrible,
00:59:08not bad by any stretch of the imagination. But I just think
00:59:12that some people will be left wanting a little bit,
00:59:14even if they do have that good action elements. OK, Jackson,
