00:01:29Looking like the perfect targets, young bo,
00:01:33for an alarming blackmail scheme.
00:01:36We set up fake names, add photos and post comments.
00:01:40Just to make the accounts look lived in.
00:01:42[Asha] Follow popular accounts,
00:01:44dating apps, chat networks.
00:01:47It says follow for more. [Asha] Because the scammers look through
00:01:50follower lists to find their victims.
00:01:52So I have someone following me already.
00:01:55It's been, like, seconds.
00:01:57[Asha] That's how sextortion begins.
00:01:59These criminals pose as young girls
00:02:01and lure boys into sending a nude photo.
00:02:04Then they blackmail them. -[phone chimes] -Oh, Bella's talking to me.
00:02:08She says "Hi." [Asha] Bella's now messaging
00:02:11two of our accounts at the same time. Look at that.
00:02:17[Asha] What we're doing is just a test.
00:02:19We know there are families across Canada
00:02:22living with the brutal reality of sextortion.
00:02:28We're in Bay Fortune, Prince Edward Island.
00:02:31[people singing] ♪ Happy birthday, dear Harry ♪
00:02:48Their 17-year-old son, Harry, a sextortion victim.
00:02:52So this scenario in the house
00:02:54that the boys had confiscated, it became the man cave.
00:02:59[Asha] Harry's presence is felt everywhere.
00:03:02[Carl] This is actually Harry's room.
00:03:03So this is where Harry spent his time.
00:03:06[Asha] His room filled with reminders of dreams unrealize.
00:03:10Those are his military boots that he was using
00:03:13when he was in the reserves.
00:03:15And I wear them when I'm doing stuff during the day
00:03:19just to feel closer to him, right? -[Asha] Yeah. Absolutely. -Yeah.
00:03:22I, Harry Burke... [Asha] He loved being a cadet.
00:03:26He said, I want to make Canada better.
00:03:29And this was the way he figured that he could do that.
00:03:31He was standing right here when he told us that.
00:03:34And I really feel he would have. But that was taken away.
00:03:42Harry and I spent that day together.
00:03:44We had done father-son things.
00:03:46[Asha] He tells his dad about a girl he's messaging on Instagram.
00:03:50Harry had come to me sometime in the afternoon to say
00:03:54he was talking to this girl around his age from Nova Scotia.
00:03:58And he showed me her picture. And it all seemed very real.
00:04:03[Asha] But Harry's situation unravels quickly.
00:04:07He confides in his dad.
00:04:09[Carl] That evening, Harry came to me. And he said, "Dad, I screwed up."
00:04:14And I said, "What do you mean?"
00:04:15And he said, "Well, I shared pictures."
00:04:18And he said, "They're looking for money."
00:04:21And I said, "We can't send the money, Harry." I knew what extortion meant.
00:04:26I said, "They'll just keep asking for more."
00:04:28[Asha] They call a family meeting. Harry was sitting right there.
00:04:31-And I was there. -Barbie was here.
00:04:33Harry explained to Mom what had happened.
00:04:35And during that conversation...
00:04:39we were all upset.
00:04:41And Barbie actually got a message.
00:04:46-On Instagram from the same... -Same person.
00:04:49...same person.
00:04:51This individual that said... "I'm going to destroy you."
00:04:55And I wish Harry had never seen the message.
00:05:00[Asha] They make a plan to call police in the morning.
00:05:03Harry's parents don't know he's still being hounded
00:05:06well into the night.
00:05:08The scammer sends his photo to other cadets
00:05:11and threatens to send it to his commanding officer.
00:05:14In Harry's mind, he figured everything
00:05:16that he had worked so hard for was gone.
00:05:19He figured this would interfere
00:05:20with his chances within the PEI regiment
00:05:25to go to the Royal Military College and become an officer.
00:05:29I just feel so...
00:05:32He was sitting in the garage.
00:05:35And I said, "What are you doing?"
00:05:36And he said, "Oh, I'm just writing some thoughts."
00:05:39And I didn't ask him what he was writing. Tried to be...
00:05:43respectful, but it wasn't uncommon for Harry to journal.
00:05:47He did do that. So we talked for a minute.
00:05:51And I went to the door.
00:05:53And I turned around and I said, "I love you, Harry."
00:05:56He said, "I love you, Mom." He was writing his note.
00:06:02I didn't ask him what he was writing. If I had asked him...
00:06:08So there's a lot of blame, self-blame that we have.
00:06:10We don't blame each other, but it's the guilt...
00:06:14that we carry every day.
00:06:19[Asha] Harry dies by suicide
00:06:21less than 12 hours after connecting with his scammer.
00:06:28Sextortion is on the rise,
00:06:30with Canada's child exploitation tip line, CyberTip,
00:06:33telling us it receives 50 to 80 reports a week.
00:06:37While girls are targeted too, 85% of victims are boys.
00:06:41And Harry is one of more than 50 boys across North America,
00:06:45Australia, and the UK who have died by suicide.
00:06:49In Canada, since 2021,
00:06:52there's Daniel Lints from Manitoba.
00:06:56William Doiron from New Brunswick,
00:06:59Carson Cleland from northern B.C.
00:07:02And this 14-year-old from southern B.C.
00:07:06These are just the reported tragedies.
00:07:08Experts warn the unreported cases could be much higher.
00:07:15[Paul Raphael] I think this is the worst scam in the world.
00:07:18[Asha] Paul Raphael is a cybercrime analyst
00:07:21and leading expert on sextortion.
00:07:23There's no other scam that I think even compares to this.
00:07:26[Asha] Paul's poured through hundreds of conversations with sextorters.
00:07:30We ask him to analyze ours.
00:07:33Yeah, so interestingly enough, I have actually seen this profile picture before
00:07:37-You have? Huh. -...using the name Bella, yes.
00:07:39And this, with 100% certainty, is a sextorter.
00:07:43Because look at that. She kept pushing us off Instagram.
00:07:47So these criminals very quickly
00:07:49try to take their targets
00:07:51to usually an encrypted messaging platform
00:07:54to try to make sure that their Instagram account doesn't get banned immediately.
00:07:58[Asha] This scammer, Bella, does exactly that.
00:08:01So she says...
00:08:04The replies keep coming.
00:08:08And then... she says, "Show me your [bleep]
00:08:11and I will send you my full naked video in return."
00:08:15We're not going to do that. I think we're going to have to shut
00:08:18-this one down. -Yeah. [Asha] The conversations get explicit.
00:08:22In just 24 hours,
00:08:24seven separate accounts ask us for nudes.
00:08:29Later, in a stunning twist, another scammer messages us.
00:08:33He grabs our headshot,
00:08:35alters it with an intimate image to sextort us.
00:08:39"Answer me right now. Four, five."
00:08:41He's running a countdown, demands a $50 gift card.
00:08:44-Don't try me. -Angry face.
00:08:47[Asha] He's threatening to post the picture online.
00:08:55Then he calls us. Hello?
00:09:02I don't have any money.
00:09:08How can I pay you? I don't have... He hung up.
00:09:11[Asha] When he calls again, we reveal who we are.
00:09:15Listen, my name is Asha Tomlinson. I'm a journalist with
00:09:18the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in Toronto.
00:09:24We know that you're sextorting us. This was a fake profile.
00:09:28He hung up. As for Bella, she leaves a clue
00:09:32about her real identity when she texts us
00:09:35from a Nigerian number. So we call. What's your name?
00:09:39Okay. And so you had the profile
00:09:42set up as Bella, right?
00:09:48I guess I'm just trying to understand
00:09:50why you scam people.
00:09:56You don't have money?
00:09:58We know a lot of the financial sextortion scams right now
00:10:01are coming from West Africa, specifically Nigeria.
00:10:04[Asha] In fact, most Canadian deaths have links to Nigeria.
00:10:08This isn't just a public safety emergency,
00:10:11but this is also a national security emergency too.
00:10:17[Asha] Coming up, we confront one of the Yahoo Boys.
00:10:20So you don't ever wonder if the person
00:10:23on the other end is suffering
00:10:26because of the scamming that you've done.
00:10:44They don't just target one person at any given time.
00:10:47They target as many people as they can reach out to.
00:10:50[Asha] ...into sending compromising photos.
00:10:53Then those images are used for blackmail.
00:10:56We create fake profiles and seven scammers ask us
00:11:00to send nudes in just 24 hours.
00:11:03Predators can reel kids in within minutes.
00:11:06And some, once they're in it, feel there's no way out.
00:11:12Come. [Mikayla whistles] [Asha] In Prince George, British Columbia,
00:11:16Ryan Cleland and his daughter Mikayla
00:11:18are still trying to make sense of it all.
00:11:20I had spoken with Carson about sextortion
00:11:24online and what to do if it happens.
00:11:26[Asha] Ryan wonders how his fun-loving,
00:11:29caring 12-year-old boy, Carson,
00:11:31got caught up in the unthinkable.
00:11:33How did that conversation go?
00:11:36It was awkward, very awkward.
00:11:39He said, "If you ever send somebody a picture of your penis...
00:11:42God, I wouldn't." I said, "Well, just... If you do...
00:11:47and they want money, just... come get me.
00:11:51Don't send money, don't panic, don't freak out. Come get me, we'll deal with it."
00:11:55[Asha] In October 2023, Carson meets who he thinks
00:11:58is a girl on Snapchat.
00:12:01They start chatting in the morning.
00:12:03During their conversation, Carson sends a nude photo.
00:12:07He knew what to do.
00:12:09He just couldn't think past his fear.
00:12:11[Asha] After just 12 hours, Carson takes his own life.
00:12:16He just-- he just panicked.
00:12:20[Asha] Recalling that day, Ryan says Carson left school early,
00:12:24telling his sister he wasn't feeling well.
00:12:26I only just found out that Carson actually
00:12:29went to the store that day and bought a gift card and sent it to them.
00:12:33So he did pay the scammer.
00:12:3725-[bleep]-dollars.
00:12:42[sobbing]
00:12:46[Asha] In search of answers, Carson's sister, Mikayla,
00:12:49decides to read the police report. [Mikayla] He actually did
00:12:52go to the store and buy a gift card.
00:12:54They used it and then said that
00:12:57that it didn't work and to buy another one.
00:13:00He had obviously gotten a lot more scared
00:13:02and kind of frantic with the way he was responding and stuff.
00:13:06Did you get a sense of the pressure
00:13:09building for him?
00:13:11Yeah, you could definitely tell how scared
00:13:14and kind of stressed out he was getting
00:13:16and get a sense of how he would have felt through those messages when you can really see them.
00:13:20It's definitely the hardest part about that.
00:13:25He didn't know what to do. He's just a boy.
00:13:30And that's an adult problem.
00:13:33That's why they pick on the kids.
00:13:35That's why they look for them. They're easy targets.
00:13:41[Asha] Carson wasn't the only one victimised.
00:13:43Some of his classmates were also targeted at this school.
00:13:51In blackmailing, BM.
00:13:53We discover dozens of online groups
00:13:56sharing strategies and inside information
00:13:59on what's known as the BM sca, which stands for blackmail.
00:14:03Let's go in there and check that group out.
00:14:05We enter their forums undercover
00:14:07to see how they recruit new scammers.
00:14:10Right there, he's saying it's blackmailing.
00:14:13He's admitting what he's doing.
00:14:15They call themselves the Yahoo Boys.
00:14:18And they're based in Nigeria,
00:14:19showing off the money they make on social media.
00:14:23"So your deal with him is to take 70% of his salary.
00:14:26That's how BM works.
00:14:28The client must keep paying every month."
00:14:32We find a Yahoo Boy willing to talk.
00:14:35We're not revealing his identity because he fears for his safety.
00:14:39At first, he denies being involved
00:14:41in the BM scam, but then...
00:14:43I'm just wondering if you've run the BM scam before.
00:14:47Yeah, most times. Not every time.
00:14:49-Not every time? -Yes.
00:14:51[Asha] He's based in Lagos, a hotbed for cybercrime.
00:14:55[indistinct] it's very, very large.
00:14:58It's very hard to find a job.
00:14:59So I guess I need something doing to survive.
00:15:02So you don't ever wonder if the person
00:15:05on the other end is suffering
00:15:08because of the scamming that you've done?
00:15:11Yeah, let me just-- I don't know what to answer to that.
00:15:15[Asha] We also speak with a man who's left that life behind.
00:15:18I feel so bad after what I've done.
00:15:21I feel so bad. [Asha] He wants to remain anonymous
00:15:25because of security risks.
00:15:27In my case, I wanted to go to the realm,
00:15:29you know, of becoming a billionaire.
00:15:31But then you have to be diabolic.
00:15:35[Asha] He says he was a Yahoo Boy for a decade
00:15:37before the BM scam gains traction.
00:15:40Now he says he's a pastor,
00:15:42warning young Nigerian men about the dangers.
00:15:45You think that they know that,
00:15:47that they're driving some people to kill themselves
00:15:51because they've been scammed? So many of those people,
00:15:54they've sold their soul to devil. They don't care.
00:16:00[Asha] Coming up, we put the pressure
00:16:02on the Minister of Justice.
00:16:04We spoke to the families of two teen boys who took their lives.
00:16:08They feel like there's been no real action from government.
00:16:13What is your message to them?
00:16:30Your heart hurts so bad.
00:16:33[Asha] ...by a financial scam that manipulates boys
00:16:35into sharing nude photographs. And then they're blackmailed.
00:16:39"Just pay me $50."
00:16:41They find them on social medi, coerce them on messaging apps.
00:16:45"You got Telegram?"
00:16:46[Asha] Applying pressure until they break.
00:16:50Some have taken their lives.
00:16:52And now their parents want accountability.
00:16:55Cybercrime expert Paul Raphael says
00:16:57it's on social media companies to act.
00:17:00We know that the primary source of leverage
00:17:02that these criminals use is the followers lists.
00:17:06The moment that a victim accepts the criminal's follow request,
00:17:09their entire social network is compromised.
00:17:11Ultimately, it comes down to a fake account problem
00:17:14and platforms are very resistant to block
00:17:18or prevent the creation of new fake accounts.
00:17:20We reach out to the platforms.
00:17:22They all say sexual exploitation is against their terms of use.
00:17:26They remove accounts when users report it
00:17:29and proactively look for bad actors.
00:17:32Meta and Snapchat add they do work with law enforcement
00:17:35and send pop-up warnings about suspicious accounts.
00:17:39TikTok says teens under 16 don't have access to direct messaging.
00:17:43And Telegram makes it a point to say it is impossible
00:17:47for any platform to remove all criminal content.
00:17:51Carl says that's not good enough.
00:17:54The only way they'll ever change in doing us is if they're forced into doing it.
00:17:59Our lives will never be the same.
00:18:01And it sickens me, the attention that social media
00:18:04has given it, which is nothing.
00:18:07Absolutely nothing.
00:18:09It's like your kids don't matter.
00:18:12We look at an empty chair and an empty bed
00:18:14and our son is in an urn beside our bed.
00:18:17That's where our boy is forever.
00:18:20[Asha] They want the government to step in.
00:18:24Earlier this year, Prime Minister Mark Carney
00:18:27campaigns on better protecting kids from online harm.
00:18:30My government will act to protect children online
00:18:33and bring those who seek to harm them to justice.
00:18:37[Asha] And the man in charge of fulfilling those promises?
00:18:40Justice Minister Sean Fraser.
00:18:42For weeks, we try to get an on-camera interview.
00:18:45He finally agrees to talk to us over the phone.
00:18:49Minister Fraser, good to talk to you.
00:18:51[Fraser] Thanks very much for reaching out.
00:18:53The Liberal government committed to protecting youth online.
00:18:57They've campaigned on it as well. You've been in office for six months.
00:19:01-What's happening? -We will be moving forward
00:19:03with legislation to modify
00:19:05the criminal justice system in a number of ways,
00:19:08designed to help protect kids online.
00:19:11In particular, you should expect to see
00:19:14the first steps taken in the fall sitting.
00:19:18We spoke to the families of Carson Cleland
00:19:21and Harry Burke, two teen boys
00:19:24who took their lives after being sexstorted.
00:19:27They feel like there's been no real action from government.
00:19:31They want to see it. What is your message to them?
00:19:35[Fraser] Dealing with the loss of a child
00:19:37is the most profound grief that a family can experience.
00:19:43We want to do what we can as a federal government
00:19:45to change the laws where they are not working.
00:19:48What people should expect to see, in short order,
00:19:51is new criminal legislation
00:19:53that's going to address child luring,
00:19:56that's going to address non-consensual sharing
00:19:58of intimate images of deepfakes,
00:20:00that's going to specifically address
00:20:03online sexploitation and extortion of kids,
00:20:06in addition to new tools that we want to give
00:20:08to law enforcement to prevent this crime.
00:20:13[Asha] In the meantime, victims are finding support in each other.
00:20:17I was in that suicidal state of mind.
00:20:19[Asha] We're hiding this young man's identity
00:20:21to protect him from being re-victimized. We're calling him Kyle.
00:20:25The difference was maybe I didn't have the capability
00:20:28of doing something to myself, but other people do.
00:20:31[Asha] When Kyle is extorted in 2021,
00:20:34he goes to a dark place, but finds his way out
00:20:38by helping other victims in a Reddit community.
00:20:40I would check in with them daily,
00:20:43especially with the people who were suicidal.
00:20:45I'm like, "I want you to check in with me
00:20:48every hour on the hour."
00:20:49[Asha] He has this advice for those going through it no.
00:20:52I know it's hard at first. I was there. Calm down.
00:20:56Realize that this is very insignificant.
00:20:59Even if it had your face, there is someone
00:21:02who would care enough to understand.
00:21:06[Asha] Carl is also finding purpose in his community.
00:21:09We didn't know anything about it through the school system
00:21:12or through any sort of police involvement.
00:21:16[Asha] He's speaking to schools across PEI, raising awareness.
00:21:20I've spoken to over 5,000 children so far,
00:21:23and the kids that come to talk to me,
00:21:26they come in groups, they come in pairs,
00:21:29they come one at a time.
00:21:32They're careful, they're heartfelt. They want a hug.
00:21:35They thank me for what they've learned.
00:21:38And the stuff I'm talking about, they knew nothing about.
00:21:41I do it because of Harry. I don't want his name forgotten.
