00:10:00seizing the port city of Mocha yesterday,
00:10:03they've reportedly taken control of another town on the
00:10:06Red Sea, as well as an island in the
00:10:08Babel Mandeep called Perim. Now, this hasn't been confirmed by
00:10:12the Houthis, but it would give them a new
00:10:15vantage point to carry out strikes on ships moving through
00:10:19the Strait. The group, which is backed by Iran,
00:10:22says it doesn't plan to target
00:10:24international shipping, but it will continue its
00:10:27previously announced blockade against Saudi oil exports. Now,
00:10:31this is a big problem for Saudi Arabia,
00:10:34which is becoming increasingly reliant on the Babel Mandat
00:10:38because of tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. Now,
00:10:41Saudi Arabia is the biggest backer of the internationally
00:10:45recognized government in Yemen. It's provided substantial
00:10:49military support over recent years,
00:10:52but recently it has been reluctant to engage militarily
00:10:55with the Houthis, preferring instead dialogue.
00:10:59And that since the ceasefire between the two sides that was
00:11:03brokered in 2022 but sort of collapsed into a stalemate. Now,
00:11:07the Houthis have recently stepped up their attacks
00:11:11against Saudi Arabian oil facilities. And the rapid
00:11:15advance that the Houthis have carried out in recent days does
00:11:19leave Saudi Arabia looking a little bit weak,
00:11:22as if it's been taken by surprise. It is reportedly
00:11:26trying to persuade
00:11:27the US to take action alongside it. It has reportedly been
00:11:31carrying out strikes on the city of Mocha today. But this
00:11:35situation does leave it with a predicament to either return to
00:11:39dialogue with the Houthis, try to achieve a negotiated
00:11:43settlement, or continue fighting with the
00:11:46group. Now, why is this happening now? Well,
00:11:49analysts say that the Houthis have been emboldened by the
00:11:53wars in Gaza and the one between Iran and the United
00:11:56States. And they are taking advantage of
00:11:59a situation where global oil prices have been rising. They
00:12:03have been going up because of the tensions in the Strait of
00:12:06Hormuz, but they've also been affected
00:12:09by the recent events in Yemen. And that has implications for
00:12:13countries all over the world. There is also a human cost of
00:12:16this fighting. There have been hundreds of people reportedly
00:12:20killed in recent days of renewed clashes. And the United
00:12:24Nations says more than 46, 000 people have been forced to
00:12:27flee from territories taken by the Houthis

00:12:36having a further impact on the price of fuel. In North America,
00:12:40the price of oil and gas has been sharply up for months and
00:12:44now also includes diesel. The ongoing US war with Iran is the

00:12:52record $6 per gallon South of the border. It's the main fuel
00:12:56source for freight and delivery networks,
00:12:58and businesses are forced to absorb the extra
00:13:01cost. They're already passing it on to consumers.

00:23:08place to sleep tonight, that's good news. The stadium
00:23:11served as a waypoint for stranded passengers who would
00:23:14then be set up with a safe place to sleep. There were
00:23:17processed from here to go to local hotels, high schools,
00:23:21people's homes, the convention centre across
00:23:23the street. We ended up putting 1000 people over there on beds.
00:23:27So there were processed to go out and then every day they
00:23:30would have to come back because nobody knew when they were
00:23:33going to give the order to, to fly back to wherever they
00:23:37were going from. Stanford said he was
00:23:39amazed by the generosity of the people of St. John's. To have
00:23:42all these people put out, you know,
00:23:44that the crowds of people that came
00:23:47at the front steps of mile one to offer their houses,
00:23:50to offer support, to offer food, to offer anyway they can.
00:23:53Stanford says the support for stranded passengers after 911
00:23:57cemented Newfoundlanders and Laboratorians reputation for
00:24:00hospitality. Well, I think it's just it just
00:24:02proved the point, didn't it? I mean,
00:24:04that's what that's what we're known for. Anybody who comes
00:24:08here, you know, for hockey games or for
00:24:10concerts over the years have always talked about
00:24:13Newfoundland and Labrador Arians and their hospitality
00:24:16and how welcoming they were.
00:24:18I think all that did was prove that that point is is correct.

00:24:28About 1000 people were stranded here in Stephenville on
00:24:31September 11th, 2001 when their planes were
00:24:34diverted here. And the community is marking the 25th
00:24:37anniversary in a very unique, special way. For this community
00:24:41in particular has always had such a strong connection with
00:24:45the United States.
00:25:26Stephenville on that very emotional and frightening day.
00:25:29Back then, I was working at Jack and Jill
00:25:32Nursery School, so we had many preschoolers
00:25:35with us. And we were outside and we started to see the
00:25:38planes landing at our airport and we had no idea. And then
00:25:42the phone started to ring.
00:26:1527 planes landing in Stephenville
00:26:18that they lost their ceiling. It got too foggy for the planes
00:26:22to land, so they had to be diverted to
00:26:24other places. So we ended up with eight commercial flights
00:26:28and five private smaller planes. Stephenville is no stranger to
00:26:32flights, an emergency backup airport in
00:26:35those days for diverted flights from Gander or St. John's,
00:26:38something Mayor Bob Burns knows all too well. The previous year
00:26:43we had had over 30 American aircraft land here,
00:26:46military aircraft for Harmon Field Day.
00:26:48So the tradition of being very close to the Americans and the
00:26:52American military, you know, had kept in Stephenville,
00:26:55kept alive, you know, ever since, well,
00:26:57back in 1986 when we hosted a reunion of former military
00:27:00people who were stationed here at the Ernest Harmon Air Force
00:27:03Base. So there was a lot of motion in the community at that
00:27:07time. The College of the North Atlantic staff housed and fed
00:27:11most of the stranded passengers, and many stayed at the hotels
00:27:14in Stephenville, while some were bussed to
00:27:17hotels in nearby Corner Brook. The Knights of Columbus will
00:27:20sponsor a special service at Saint Stephens Parish to
00:27:23commemorate the anniversary. Uniformed first responders and
00:27:27veterans are welcome to join and pray for those lost. Each
00:27:30year we we kind of look back and we remember 9/11 with a
00:27:33different perspective, I guess, than your average
00:27:36Newfoundlander would. So, you know,
00:27:38the town is still, you know, very much a part of what

00:28:13This drone display lit up New York's Harbor last night. A
00:28:16total of 2977 lights, one for each person killed in
00:28:19the attacks. This installation was developed with the input of
00:28:24the 9/11 families and 1st responders. The lights then
00:28:28transformed into a full scale outline of the Twin Towers.

00:30:41A Fredericton lawyer who was found guilty of 29 professional
00:30:44misconduct related charges has been disbarred,
00:30:47according to the Law Society of New Brunswick. According to a
00:30:51notice posted to the society's website, as of August 31st,
00:30:55Stephen Hill is no longer able to practice law in the province.
00:30:59In June, he was found guilty by a panel
00:31:02of the discipline committee of misappropriating more than $1
00:31:06million in client funds, failure to complete required
00:31:10work and failure to follow client instructions. He's been
00:31:14disbarred based on the allegations. Well,
00:31:16they're no longer allegations, but basically what was cited in
00:31:20the Form 22, which is the notice of
00:31:23complaint. Dabney says on top of being disbarred,
00:31:26Hill will also have to reimburse the Law Society a
00:31:29record-breaking $1.4 million. This is to cover the
00:31:33compensation fund, investigation costs,
00:31:35hearing costs, legal fees and janitorial costs.
00:31:38The last record-breaking payout to the loss of
00:31:41that it was $700, 000 in 2023 by Yassin Shukri,
00:31:45who gambled away his law firm clients money. This is is
00:31:50almost double of of what Mr. Hill has to repay and so it's
00:31:54very significant. Dagley says the Law Society plans to
00:31:59release the details of the final decision sometime next
00:32:03month. There's been a lengthy process and there were many
00:32:08delays, delays and it will be addressed
00:32:11in the decision as to
00:32:13the the challenges that the Law Society has gone through with
00:32:18the investigation and leading up to the hearing.
00:32:24Canadian Maple syrup is finding its way onto more store shelves
00:32:27and breakfast tables around the world as the trade war with the
00:32:31US continues. International buyers are hungry not just for
00:32:35syrup, but Maple syrup that comes from
00:32:37Canada. Hutchinson Acres and Nova Scotia says it's busier
00:32:40than usual preparing orders. This shipment is destined for
00:32:44the Netherlands. Normally we wouldn't be shipping too many
00:32:47containers out of this time of year. We've got three
00:32:50containers we're trying to get out in the next month and 1/2
00:32:54so and they're all going overseas.
00:32:56Chris Hutchinson says they see an uptick in sales whenever
00:32:59Canada U.S. trade talks are in the news. He also says
00:33:02international buyers use Maple syrup for more than just
00:33:05pancakes. It's used as a sweetener and an alternative to
00:33:09refined sugar. When you have all this,
00:33:11you have growth. You see what we're doing here. It's just
00:33:14insane what we're doing here every week compared to what we
00:33:18would normally be doing.
00:33:20Like I'm telling you, 345 times, sometimes a week,
00:33:23what we would normally be doing. Maple Store,
00:33:25a European distributor, has noticed more consumers
00:33:29asking where their products are coming from, cofounder Philippe Coley told CBC in an e-mail. Origin has
00:33:35become something our customers actively look for. People are
00:33:38not just buying Maple syrup anymore. They are buying
00:33:41Canadian Maple syrup. And they tell us that is why Canadian
00:33:45Maple syrup is perceived to be the, you know,
00:33:48the best quality. Rob Ward is a cofounder
00:33:50of Pure Maple, a UK distributor of Maple syrup.
00:33:53He says there's been a steady increase in purchases in recent
00:33:57years, but no significant surge in the
00:34:00wake of trade disputes. What he does see is a lot of love for
00:34:04Canada. I think if I summed it up,
00:34:06I think there's a fondness towards Canada and I think
00:34:10there's a a real appetite
00:34:12towards Canadian Maple syrup. Back at Hutchinson Acres,
00:34:15Chris says time will tell how long this boost in sales will
00:34:19last, but he thinks it's another
00:34:21opportunity to move away from over reliance on trade with the
00:34:25US. I think the sooner that people realize that if you're
00:34:28committed to the United States and that's your only customer
00:34:32or a major customer,
00:34:34you're really gonna need to look at different places to do
00:34:38your business. As many Canadians reach for homegrown
00:34:41products, it's clear the rest of the

00:41:43movement born out of the tragedy of 911. The kindness of
00:41:48strangers here in central Newfoundland 25 years ago has
00:41:52inspired many others to pay it forward.

00:42:40Central Park Carousel in New York City so that the next 50
00:42:43kids could ride for free. And you were here 25 years ago. Yes,
00:42:46I was. And you're here at this Day Forward 911 event. What do
00:42:50you think about this, this event?
00:42:52I love the idea. We should just help each other,
00:42:55physically helping each other. Like we have elderly neighbors
00:42:58bring in their garbage cans or something like that,
00:43:01shovel their snow or like you said,
00:43:03pay the next person's coffee. But it just makes and it makes
00:43:07you feel better. Simple message, but it's an important one.
00:43:10Firefighter John Heffernan of the FDNY, age 37,
00:43:14from Middle Village, NY. He was killed at the World
00:43:17Trade Centre.
00:43:18John was honoured with hand fans on a sweltering New York
00:43:22City bus
00:43:24during a brutal late summer heat wave. An individual on a
00:43:27bus in New York City, armed with dozens of fans,
00:43:30hand fans and cold bottles of water distributed them to
00:43:34sweaty, exhausted commuters. The
00:43:36gesture was uploaded to a social media to show that
00:43:40kindness does not have to be expensive to completely shift a
00:43:43stranger's day. Julie Guys, 44, from Lee's Summit, Missouri.
00:43:48She was killed in the South Tower.
00:43:51Julie was remembered during what we call the Ganza City Gas
00:43:56Pump Surprise.
00:43:57A board member participated in the annual campaign,
00:44:01pulled up to a gas station in Kansas City,
00:44:05paid for her own fuel and then walked over to hand a prepaid
00:44:10gift card to a complete stranger at the adjacent pump.
00:44:15They explained it was to honor the Newfoundlanders,
00:44:19who asked them for nothing in return when refuelling the
00:44:23spirits of 7000 stranded airline passengers.
00:44:28We have just delivered 25
00:44:32names, people we said we would never
00:44:35forget.
00:44:37We can't do all 2977 here today. I wish we could.
00:44:47There has never been another day like it.
00:44:53Due to a recent development in the United States,
00:44:55US airspace has been closed.
00:44:57Hundreds of planes with thousands of people told they
00:45:02had to land now.
00:45:04Craft land as soon as possible at the nearest airport. An
00:45:08attack underway. Many planes diverted here. Newfoundland
00:45:11Negative. You must now land at Gander.
00:45:15From here in the Gander Air Traffic Control tower. It was a
00:45:19scramble on 9/11 as planes began to land. They needed
00:45:22places to put them using tarmac space,
00:45:25including an old disused runway. Anywhere they could find space
00:45:29to put a plane, they did. It was intense,
00:45:31but and then it was over. It was air traffic controller Don
00:45:35O'Brien's job to order planes down.
00:45:39All around her fault and it's wrong. We're here.
00:45:4238 aircraft coming to a place few passengers at. Ever heard
00:45:46of. Big jets parked wing to wing an unprecedented race in
00:45:51case more hijackers were still in the air.
00:45:56The pilots who wanted to get out of sky because it nobody
00:45:59knew what was more activity going to go on,
00:46:01terrorist activity.
00:46:03We had to literally drained the sky later. I'm Spacer. Yeah. 25
00:46:07years on. The Gander airport is a lot quieter now. This would
00:46:10have been an example of the kind of screen you were looking
00:46:14at that day. Yes, they're coming off westbound.
00:46:17Just the oceanic boundary line here,
00:46:20artifacts displayed from that awful day,
00:46:23but the memories that endure are far more positive. It was a
00:46:28good feeling of, after working at all,
00:46:31of satisfaction that you got them down safely.
00:46:36That day became emblematic of the closeness that can exist
00:46:40between Canadians and Americans,
00:46:43and it is a closeness that's being tested now,
00:46:47big time. We've been pushed to the wall. Welcome to
00:46:51unexpected
00:46:53visit to Canada. We are in Gander. It was the first time I
00:46:57had to rely on the kindness of a stranger to give me a pillow
00:47:01to lie my head at night. And American Kevin Turf was flying
00:47:05from Paris to New York that day. He was among close to 7000
00:47:10unexpected guests in Gander. There's the plane. You can't
00:47:14miss that
00:47:16with thousands more landing across Atlantic Canada.
00:47:22Mac and Nellie. Hello Canadian bonus parents, how are you?
00:47:26Hi son, how you doing in in New York?
00:47:29Kevin isn't really Mac and Nellie Moss's son. But a
00:47:32quarter century on it sure feels that way. A weary
00:47:36traveler welcomed with overwhelming Newfoundland
00:47:40kindness. Mac and Nellie jumped into action and gave us food,
00:47:44clothing, shelter, information and love and it
00:47:47really changed my life and and over the years we've really
00:47:52kept in touch. We were very fortunate because
00:47:56you know the the friendship memory that we've developed and
00:47:59I got a song out of it, so that's a real bonus here.
00:48:05The town's population effectively doubled housed its
00:48:09school gyms, college classrooms. People's
00:48:12homes are herculean effort to find food, bedding,
00:48:15towels and toiletries. Everything those now dubbed the
00:48:19Plain People might need.
00:48:23But it was the intangible comfort offered that stuck. 911
00:48:28changed a lot of people's lives. You know, some people lost
00:48:34wives and husbands and
00:48:36parents,
00:48:38but it changed other people. And, and in some ways,
00:48:41it could. It had the power to change for for good. Yeah. And
00:48:44I think that's your story. That's exactly what kindness
00:48:47was a big thing, for sure. A lot of them wanted
00:48:50to pay us for their stay. And I said no.
00:48:53Anytime that you have an opportunity,
00:48:57pay it forward. You know, do good to people. Remember
00:49:01your time in Gander.
00:49:03We owe our Canadian neighbors a debt of gratitude. An American
00:49:09cabinet secretary praising Canada? Imagine that today.
00:49:14We've got tariffs, we've got trade threats. We've got, I mean, we've got threats to take over
00:49:18the whole country.
00:49:20It makes me angry to
00:49:23to see our government
00:49:26talking about our neighbor
00:49:28like they are and acting the way they are because it's not
00:49:33how you treat neighbors. I agree 100%
00:49:37to thank Newfoundland for its kindness. Parts of the World
00:49:41Trade Centres have been donated to Gander and other towns that
00:49:45pitched in a way to remember what happened.
00:49:51What is the global success of the musical Come From Away?
00:49:56You got it.
00:49:59It reinvigorated the story of Newfoundlanders creating
00:50:02comfort in the face of tragedy.
00:50:07How are you, David Cotton, Welcome to my home. Thank you
00:50:10very much. There's a character in the musical named for Beulah
00:50:14Cooper. She never gets bored of telling her own story,
00:50:17even 25 years later. It all began for you with a phone call.
00:50:22Trey sandwiches to the Legion and they said there's plenty
00:50:25load of people coming in. They're saying tonight I said I
00:50:28guess I better wait to stay around and see if I can help,
00:50:31and I did.
00:50:36The sentiment behind those sandwiches is the reason Beulah
00:50:39receives all these cards, letters and well wishes. If you
00:50:43like. You are a constant reminder of the depth of
00:50:46humanity, grace, and kindness
00:50:48that exist in the world. Wow. And there's an awful lot of
00:50:54them. This is part of what I got. I really and truly think
00:50:59since 9:11,
00:51:01it's open a lot of hearts and a lot of eyes because you hear
00:51:05tell of it more now than you ever did before. People helping
00:51:09people.
00:51:12There's a constant flow of new visitors to the Legion,
00:51:15many wanting to meet the famous Beulah.
00:51:19Being a celebrity, I know you. And just as income
00:51:23from away, visitors are made honorary
00:51:25Newfoundlanders through the old tradition of being screeched in.
00:51:29And yes, it means kissing a codfish,
00:51:33blown away by the kindness of the people. And this experience
00:51:37with kissing the fish and drinking the screech,
00:51:39awesome. That's really, I think, beautiful story. And so I'm
00:51:43very happy to come here, experience, you know,
00:51:46the homeliness that everyone's told us about
00:51:51a place known through history for taking in strangers a safe
00:51:56harbor in a storm none greater or larger than September 11th.
00:54:12The facility is called Canada Quinque. It means the village
00:54:15that has been moved. Very emotional,
00:54:17Very emotional. I'm just taking it all in. It's part cultural
00:54:22centre, community space and museum.
00:54:24This is the centerpiece, a long house made of wooden
00:54:28posts, beams and cladded bark. And in
00:54:30villages, this is where community members
00:54:33would live and it could house 40 to 50 people or 8 to 10
00:54:37families. The building to me is a place for our people
00:54:41first and foremost, to understand our history,
00:54:44where we've been. The facility cost $56 million. It was funded
00:54:48through a combination of provincial and federal
00:54:51investments, but a significant part came
00:54:53from donors and small contributions from community
00:54:56members. For me, those $20 donations just kept
00:54:59lifting me up, lifting me up because now it
00:55:02was the kids. The kids were part of this,
00:55:04and they wanted this, too. The ground floor
00:55:07represents Turtle Island and a spiraling walkway takes
00:55:11visitors to the second
00:55:12level featuring a night sky. We would say that the sky woman
00:55:16fell from sky world to come to this world and a spiraling
00:55:19walkway representing the Milky Way as the path between these
00:55:23two realms. The former Grand Chief is encouraging everyone
00:55:26to visit. She says it's a great learning experience and she
00:55:30even learned something new herself. My oldest living
00:55:33cousin who is 90, we actually walked through this
00:55:36museum together and she actually highlighted to me that
00:55:40my great, great grandmother's image is in the beadwork
00:55:43display. And had she not been here,
00:55:45I wouldn't have known that and I wouldn't have known another
00:55:49piece of my history. They have the dates on them,
00:55:511905. So this is like 120 year old beadwork that was
00:55:54maintained and saved in our community. Community members
00:55:58say Cannot Acquire gives elders the chance to pass along the
00:56:01community's history and language to the next generation,
00:56:04and they hope it can serve as a shining example for other First
00:56:08Nations communities that their traditions can live on.
00:56:13Last month, this cocktail bar at Bloor and
00:56:15Ossington closed its doors. Electric Bill was open for more
00:56:19than two years, and it wasn't that it wasn't
00:56:22popular. So what brought it down?
00:56:24We asked the owner to break down the cost that ultimately
00:56:28killed his business. How can you get by while still
00:56:31providing something that is affordable to people in your
00:56:35area? Let's start with food. Federal
00:56:37GST tax holiday in 2024 brought prices down and customers in.
00:56:41But when that ended,
00:56:43Ryan says the cost of food surged dramatically through the
00:56:46season. It, it fluctuates as well. But I'd,
00:56:48I'd, I'd be saying about 20% sort of
00:56:50thing, 1020%, yeah. He says the rising cost
00:56:53of alcohol and insufficient government discounts have hurt
00:56:56as well. Right now, it's about 10%, which, you know,
00:56:59doesn't really do too much. If we are like,
00:57:01a significant discount, significant wholesale price
00:57:04from the LCBO, then that would mean that we'd
00:57:07be able to charge less. Though the LCBO says it's launching a
00:57:10new program to make things cheaper for the hospitality
00:57:13sector, that's coming way too late for electric bill. Then there's
00:57:17minimum wage, which has been going up
00:57:19slightly every year since 2020. People do deserve to make a
00:57:23living wage, so I'm happy to pay the extra
00:57:26labour. It just means that on our end,
00:57:28we have to be a lot more diligent with how we staff. And
00:57:31there's rents. There is currently no commercial rent
00:57:35control in Toronto, and between 2022 and 2025,
00:57:37the average commercial rent in Toronto went up by 31%. Ryan
00:57:41says the cost of hydro and gas is also on the rise,
00:57:44as are the fees to fix and replace broken and aging
00:57:47equipment. Now you deal with it and you make it happen because
00:57:50you have to and you want to say open. But then as things get
00:57:53tighter, then like every time you have to do that, it hits you a little bit more,
00:57:57takes a little bit more to recover from. Things got even
00:58:00more challenging for Electric Bill when they opted not to
00:58:02open their patio this year because of city fees. Losing
00:58:05our patio, which was like a massive revenue hit obviously over summer,
00:58:08even if we had the patio, like a patio,
00:58:10fees were like $7000 a year, which is like crazy high. Like,
00:58:13you know, we're Bloomington
00:58:15like a small bowl. And, yeah, we decided it's probably not
00:58:18gonna be worthwhile. So it's difficult to know if the
00:58:21situation for restaurants. It's worse now in Toronto than usual.
00:58:24The city doesn't track the amount of restaurant closures,
00:58:27and neither does Stats can. But advocacy organization
00:58:30Restaurants Canada says many businesses are fighting to keep
00:58:33the lights on. They are pulling back on things like shifts.
00:58:36They're pulling back on things like investments. They're
00:58:39pulling back on things like replacing equipment. So all of
00:58:42these things, again, have spin off. Your margins are
00:58:45tight already, so as the cost of things go up, there's more pressure on your
00:58:49pricing. You have to raise your prices. If you raise your
00:58:52prices too high, you'll price yourself out of
00:58:54the market. The City of Toronto has pushed the profits for
00:58:57commercial rent control with no success. You know,
00:59:00we're doing what we can. We reduce these,
00:59:02the property tax on small businesses. Definitely we're in
00:59:05favor of updating the property tax assessments. So Forward has
00:59:09frozen property tax assessments for five years. And the effect
00:59:12of that is it shifts more tax onto the little businesses,
00:59:15which is outrageous, ridiculous. When we asked the province about this,
00:59:19they didn't say anything about the property tax freeze. They
00:59:22did tell us that they're cutting red tape and the
00:59:25business, corporate income tax giving,
00:59:27quote, small businesses the tools they
00:59:29need to succeed. As for Ryan, the available support just
00:59:32wasn't enough. But he's not ruling out another venture
00:59:35someday in Toronto. Economy was a bit better. If like,
00:59:38there was a bit more support for places on the ground and it
00:59:41was a bit more of like a stable place than I'd definitely
00:59:44consider it. Yeah, News Toronto.

01:01:44It says follow for more. [Asha] Because the scammers look through
01:01:48follower lists to find their victims.
01:01:50So I have someone following me already.
01:01:52It's been, like, seconds.
01:01:54[Asha] That's how sextortion begins.
01:01:57These criminals pose as young girls
01:01:59and lure boys into sending a nude photo.
01:02:02Then they blackmail them. -[phone chimes] -Oh, Bella's talking to me.
01:02:06She says "Hi." [Asha] Bella's now messaging
01:02:08two of our accounts at the same time. Look at that.
01:02:15[Asha] What we're doing is just a test.
01:02:16We know there are families across Canada
01:02:19living with the brutal reality of sextortion.
01:02:25We're in Bay Fortune, Prince Edward Island.
01:02:46Their 17-year-old son, Harry, a sextortion victim.
01:02:50So this scenario in the house
01:02:52that the boys had confiscated, it became the man cave.

01:03:01So this is where Harry spent his time.
01:03:04[Asha] His room filled with reminders of dreams unrealize.
01:03:08Those are his military boots that he was using
01:03:11when he was in the reserves.

01:03:16just to feel closer to him, right? -[Asha] Yeah. Absolutely. -Yeah.
01:03:20I, Harry Burke... [Asha] He loved being a cadet.
01:03:24He said, I want to make Canada better.
01:03:26And this was the way he figured that he could do that.
01:03:29He was standing right here when he told us that.
01:03:31And I really feel he would have. But that was taken away.
01:03:40Harry and I spent that day together.
01:03:42We had done father-son things.
01:03:44[Asha] He tells his dad about a girl he's messaging on Instagram.
01:03:47Harry had come to me sometime in the afternoon to say
01:03:51he was talking to this girl around his age from Nova Scotia.
01:03:56And he showed me her picture. And it all seemed very real.
01:04:01[Asha] But Harry's situation unravels quickly.
01:04:04He confides in his dad.
01:04:06[Carl] That evening, Harry came to me.
01:04:09And he said, "Dad, I screwed up."
01:04:11And I said, "What do you mean?"
01:04:13And he said, "Well, I shared pictures."
01:04:16And he said, "They're looking for money."
01:04:18And I said, "We can't send the money, Harry." I knew what extortion meant.
01:04:23I said, "They'll just keep asking for more."
01:04:26[Asha] They call a family meeting. Harry was sitting right there.
01:04:29-And I was there. -Barbie was here.
01:04:30Harry explained to Mom what had happened.
01:04:33And during that conversation...
01:04:37we were all upset.
01:04:39And Barbie actually got a message.
01:04:44-On Instagram from the same... -Same person.
01:04:47...same person.
01:04:49This individual that said... "I'm going to destroy you."
01:04:53And I wish Harry had never seen the message.
01:04:58[Asha] They make a plan to call police in the morning.
01:05:01Harry's parents don't know he's still being hounded
01:05:04well into the night.
01:05:06The scammer sends his photo to other cadets
01:05:08and threatens to send it to his commanding officer.
01:05:11In Harry's mind, he figured everything
01:05:13that he had worked so hard for was gone.
01:05:16He figured this would interfere
01:05:18with his chances within the PEI regiment
01:05:22to go to the Royal Military College and become an officer.
01:05:27I just feel so...
01:05:30He was sitting in the garage.
01:05:32And I said, "What are you doing?"
01:05:34And he said, "Oh, I'm just writing some thoughts."
01:05:37And I didn't ask him what he was writing. Tried to be...
01:05:41respectful, but it wasn't uncommon for Harry to journal.
01:05:44He did do that. So we talked for a minute.
01:05:48And I went to the door.
01:05:51And I turned around and I said, "I love you, Harry."
01:05:54He said, "I love you, Mom." He was writing his note.
01:05:59I didn't ask him what he was writing. If I had asked him...
01:06:06So there's a lot of blame, self-blame that we have.
01:06:08We don't blame each other, but it's the guilt...
01:06:12that we carry every day.
01:06:16[Asha] Harry dies by suicide
01:06:18less than 12 hours after connecting with his scammer.
01:06:25Sextortion is on the rise,
01:06:28with Canada's child exploitation tip line, CyberTip,
01:06:31telling us it receives 50 to 80 reports a week.
01:06:34While girls are targeted too, 85% of victims are boys.
01:06:39And Harry is one of more than 50 boys across North America,
01:06:42Australia, and the UK who have died by suicide.
01:06:47In Canada, since 2021,
01:06:49there's Daniel Lints from Manitoba.
01:06:53William Doiron from New Brunswick,
01:06:57Carson Cleland from northern B.C.
01:07:00And this 14-year-old from southern B.C.
01:07:03These are just the reported tragedies.
01:07:06Experts warn the unreported cases could be much higher.
01:07:12[Paul Raphael] I think this is the worst scam in the world.
01:07:15[Asha] Paul Raphael is a cybercrime analyst
01:07:18and leading expert on sextortion.
01:07:20There's no other scam that I think even compares to this.
01:07:23[Asha] Paul's poured through hundreds of conversations with sextorters.
01:07:27We ask him to analyze ours.
01:07:31Yeah, so interestingly enough, I have actually seen this profile picture before
01:07:35-You have? Huh. -...using the name Bella, yes.
01:07:37And this, with 100% certainty, is a sextorter.
01:07:41Because look at that. She kept pushing us off Instagram.
01:07:44So these criminals very quickly try to take their targets
01:07:49to usually an encrypted messaging platform
01:07:52to try to make sure that their Instagram account doesn't get banned immediately.
01:07:55[Asha] This scammer, Bella, does exactly that.
01:07:58So she says...
01:08:02The replies keep coming.
01:08:06And then... she says, "Show me your [bleep]
01:08:09and I will send you my full naked video in return."
01:08:12We're not going to do that. I think we're going to have to shut
01:08:16-this one down. -Yeah. [Asha] The conversations get explicit.
01:08:20In just 24 hours,
01:08:22seven separate accounts ask us for nudes.
01:08:26Later, in a stunning twist, another scammer messages us.
01:08:31He grabs our headshot,
01:08:32alters it with an intimate image to sextort us.
01:08:36"Answer me right now. Four, five."
01:08:39He's running a countdown, demands a $50 gift card.
01:08:42-Don't try me. -Angry face.
01:08:44[Asha] He's threatening to post the picture online.
01:08:53Then he calls us. Hello?
01:08:59I don't have any money.
01:09:05How can I pay you? I don't have... He hung up.
01:09:09[Asha] When he calls again, we reveal who we are.
01:09:12Listen, my name is Asha Tomlinson. I'm a journalist with
01:09:16the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in Toronto.
01:09:21We know that you're sextorting us. This was a fake profile.
01:09:26He hung up. As for Bella, she leaves a clue
01:09:29about her real identity when she texts us
01:09:32from a Nigerian number. So we call. What's your name?
01:09:37Okay. And so you had the profile
01:09:40set up as Bella, right?
01:09:46I guess I'm just trying to understand
01:09:48why you scam people.
01:09:53You don't have money?
01:09:56We know a lot of the financial sextortion scams right now
01:09:59are coming from West Africa, specifically Nigeria.
01:10:02[Asha] In fact, most Canadian deaths have links to Nigeria.
01:10:06This isn't just a public safety emergency,
01:10:09but this is also a national security emergency too.
01:10:14[Asha] Coming up, we confront one of the Yahoo Boys.
01:10:18So you don't ever wonder if the person
01:10:21on the other end is suffering
01:10:23because of the scamming that you've done.

01:11:08is going to be cracking down. Minimum 10% tariff on all
01:11:11imports. Some contracts are already getting cancelled.

01:13:29They target as many people as they can reach out to.

01:13:35Then those images are used for blackmail.
01:13:38We create fake profiles and seven scammers ask us
01:13:42to send nudes in just 24 hours.
01:13:46Predators can reel kids in within minutes.
01:13:49And some, once they're in it, feel there's no way out.
01:13:55Come. [Mikayla whistles] [Asha] In Prince George, British Columbia,
01:13:58Ryan Cleland and his daughter Mikayla
01:14:01are still trying to make sense of it all.
01:14:03I had spoken with Carson about sextortion
01:14:06online and what to do if it happens.
01:14:09[Asha] Ryan wonders how his fun-loving,
01:14:11caring 12-year-old boy, Carson,
01:14:14got caught up in the unthinkable.
01:14:16How did that conversation go?
01:14:18It was awkward, very awkward.
01:14:21He said, "If you ever send somebody a picture of your penis...
01:14:25God, I wouldn't." I said, "Well, just... If you do...
01:14:30and they want money, just... come get me.
01:14:33Don't send money, don't panic, don't freak out. Come get me, we'll deal with it."
01:14:37[Asha] In October 2023, Carson meets who he thinks
01:14:41is a girl on Snapchat.
01:14:44They start chatting in the morning.
01:14:46During their conversation, Carson sends a nude photo.
01:14:50He knew what to do.
01:14:52He just couldn't think past his fear.
01:14:54[Asha] After just 12 hours, Carson takes his own life.
01:14:59He just-- he just panicked.
01:15:02[Asha] Recalling that day, Ryan says Carson left school early,
01:15:06telling his sister he wasn't feeling well.
01:15:09I only just found out that Carson actually
01:15:11went to the store that day and bought a gift card and sent it to them.
01:15:16So he did pay the scammer.
01:15:2025-[bleep]-dollars.
01:15:24[sobbing]
01:15:28[Asha] In search of answers, Carson's sister, Mikayla,
01:15:31decides to read the police report. [Mikayla] He actually did
01:15:35go to the store and buy a gift card.
01:15:37They used it and then said that
01:15:40that it didn't work and to buy another one.
01:15:42He had obviously gotten a lot more scared
01:15:45and kind of frantic with the way he was responding and stuff.
01:15:49Did you get a sense of the pressure
01:15:52building for him?
01:15:53Yeah, you could definitely tell how scared
01:15:57and kind of stressed out he was getting
01:15:59and get a sense of how he would have felt through those messages when you can really see them.
01:16:03It's definitely the hardest part about that.
01:16:08He didn't know what to do. He's just a boy.
01:16:13And that's an adult problem.
01:16:16That's why they pick on the kids.
01:16:18That's why they look for them. They're easy targets.
01:16:24[Asha] Carson wasn't the only one victimised.
01:16:26Some of his classmates were also targeted at this school.
01:16:34In blackmailing, BM.
01:16:36We discover dozens of online groups
01:16:39sharing strategies and inside information
01:16:41on what's known as the BM sca, which stands for blackmail.
01:16:46Let's go in there and check that group out.
01:16:48We enter their forums undercover
01:16:50to see how they recruit new scammers.
01:16:52Right there, he's saying it's blackmailing.
01:16:56He's admitting what he's doing.
01:16:58They call themselves the Yahoo Boys.
01:17:00And they're based in Nigeria,
01:17:02showing off the money they make on social media.
01:17:05"So your deal with him is to take 70% of his salary.
01:17:09That's how BM works.
01:17:10The client must keep paying every month."
01:17:15We find a Yahoo Boy willing to talk.
01:17:17We're not revealing his identity because he fears for his safety.
01:17:21At first, he denies being involved
01:17:24in the BM scam, but then...
01:17:26I'm just wondering if you've run the BM scam before.
01:17:29Yeah, most times. Not every time.
01:17:32-Not every time? -Yes.
01:17:34[Asha] He's based in Lagos, a hotbed for cybercrime.
01:17:37[indistinct] it's very, very large.
01:17:40It's very hard to find a job.
01:17:42So I guess I need something doing to survive.
01:17:45So you don't ever wonder if the person
01:17:48on the other end is suffering
01:17:51because of the scamming that you've done?
01:17:54Yeah, let me just-- I don't know what to answer to that.
01:17:58[Asha] We also speak with a man who's left that life behind.
01:18:01I feel so bad after what I've done.
01:18:03I feel so bad. [Asha] He wants to remain anonymous
01:18:07because of security risks.
01:18:09In my case, I wanted to go to the realm,
01:18:12you know, of becoming a billionaire.
01:18:14But then you have to be diabolic.
01:18:17[Asha] He says he was a Yahoo Boy for a decade
01:18:20before the BM scam gains traction.
01:18:23Now he says he's a pastor,
01:18:25warning young Nigerian men about the dangers.
01:18:28You think that they know that,
01:18:30that they're driving some people to kill themselves
01:18:34because they've been scammed? So many of those people,
01:18:37they've sold their soul to devil. They don't care.

01:18:51They feel like there's been no real action from government.

01:21:54Some have taken their lives.
01:21:56And now their parents want accountability.
01:21:59Cybercrime expert Paul Raphael says
01:22:01it's on social media companies to act.
01:22:04We know that the primary source of leverage
01:22:07that these criminals use is the followers lists.
01:22:10The moment that a victim accepts the criminal's follow request,
01:22:13their entire social network is compromised.
01:22:15Ultimately, it comes down to a fake account problem
01:22:18and platforms are very resistant to block
01:22:22or prevent the creation of new fake accounts.
01:22:24We reach out to the platforms.
01:22:27They all say sexual exploitation is against their terms of use.
01:22:31They remove accounts when users report it
01:22:34and proactively look for bad actors.
01:22:36Meta and Snapchat add they do work with law enforcement
01:22:40and send pop-up warnings about suspicious accounts.
01:22:43TikTok says teens under 16 don't have access to direct messaging.
01:22:48And Telegram makes it a point to say it is impossible
01:22:51for any platform to remove all criminal content.
01:22:55Carl says that's not good enough.
01:22:58The only way they'll ever change in doing us is if they're forced into doing it.
01:23:03Our lives will never be the same.
01:23:05And it sickens me, the attention that social media
01:23:09has given it, which is nothing.
01:23:11Absolutely nothing.
01:23:13It's like your kids don't matter.
01:23:16We look at an empty chair and an empty bed
01:23:18and our son is in an urn beside our bed.
01:23:22That's where our boy is forever.
01:23:24[Asha] They want the government to step in.
01:23:28Earlier this year, Prime Minister Mark Carney
01:23:31campaigns on better protecting kids from online harm.
01:23:34My government will act to protect children online
01:23:38and bring those who seek to harm them to justice.
01:23:41[Asha] And the man in charge of fulfilling those promises?
01:23:44Justice Minister Sean Fraser.
01:23:47For weeks, we try to get an on-camera interview.
01:23:50He finally agrees to talk to us over the phone.
01:23:53Minister Fraser, good to talk to you.
01:23:55[Fraser] Thanks very much for reaching out.
01:23:58The Liberal government committed to protecting youth online.
01:24:01They've campaigned on it as well. You've been in office for six months.
01:24:05-What's happening? -We will be moving forward
01:24:07with legislation to modify
01:24:09the criminal justice system in a number of ways,
01:24:12designed to help protect kids online.
01:24:15In particular, you should expect to see
01:24:18the first steps taken in the fall sitting.
01:24:22We spoke to the families of Carson Cleland
01:24:25and Harry Burke, two teen boys
01:24:28who took their lives after being sexstorted.
01:24:31They feel like there's been no real action from government.
01:24:35They want to see it. What is your message to them?
01:24:40[Fraser] Dealing with the loss of a child
01:24:41is the most profound grief that a family can experience.
01:24:47We want to do what we can as a federal government
01:24:49to change the laws where they are not working.
01:24:53What people should expect to see, in short order,
01:24:56is new criminal legislation
01:24:58that's going to address child luring,
01:25:00that's going to address non-consensual sharing
01:25:02of intimate images of deepfakes,
01:25:04that's going to specifically address
01:25:07online sexploitation and extortion of kids,
01:25:10in addition to new tools that we want to give
01:25:13to law enforcement to prevent this crime.
01:25:17[Asha] In the meantime, victims are finding support in each other.
01:25:21I was in that suicidal state of mind.
01:25:24[Asha] We're hiding this young man's identity
01:25:26to protect him from being re-victimized. We're calling him Kyle.
01:25:29The difference was maybe I didn't have the capability
01:25:33of doing something to myself, but other people do.
01:25:36[Asha] When Kyle is extorted in 2021,
01:25:39he goes to a dark place, but finds his way out
01:25:42by helping other victims in a Reddit community.
01:25:45I would check in with them daily,
01:25:47especially with the people who were suicidal.
01:25:49I'm like, "I want you to check in with me
01:25:52every hour on the hour."
01:25:53[Asha] He has this advice for those going through it no.
01:25:56I know it's hard at first. I was there. Calm down.
01:26:00Realize that this is very insignificant.
01:26:03Even if it had your face, there is someone
01:26:06who would care enough to understand.
01:26:11[Asha] Carl is also finding purpose in his community.
01:26:14We didn't know anything about it through the school system
01:26:16or through any sort of police involvement.
01:26:20[Asha] He's speaking to schools across PEI, raising awareness.
01:26:24I've spoken to over 5,000 children so far,
01:26:27and the kids that come to talk to me,
01:26:30they come in groups, they come in pairs,
01:26:33they come one at a time.
01:26:36They're careful, they're heartfelt. They want a hug.
01:26:40They thank me for what they've learned.
01:26:42And the stuff I'm talking about, they knew nothing about.
01:26:45I do it because of Harry. I don't want his name forgotten.

01:27:13...and targeting unsuspecting Canadians.
01:27:16I was stupid to go there, but they are good.
01:27:20[reporter] Fraudsters who are fearless,
01:27:22even when confronted.
01:27:28[reporter] We joined forces with Enquête to ask
01:27:31who or what will stop them.
01:27:33If there's someone who could fix this
01:27:35is Prime Minister Mark Carney.
01:27:38Why is it still happening?

01:30:31same argument from the same playbook,
01:30:33which is to say they need us. We don't need that. We relied
01:30:37too much on one economic partner. It's time to stop.
01:30:40That time is over. The problem is that this fight isn't so
01:30:44straightforward because these are not 2 equal opponents
01:30:47getting into a fistfight. 1 is much bigger than the other,
01:30:51and so while both sides are talking the same kind of tough,
01:30:55their words mean very different things. It's wildly asymmetric,
01:30:59but both sides are hurting and only one side has agreed that
01:31:03the pain is worth it.
01:31:10There are probably hundreds of ways I could express to you
01:31:14that in a conventional economic sense,
01:31:16Canada fighting the US is like if this southern Tamandua were
01:31:20to fight this Sumatran tiger at the Nashville Zoo. No one wants
01:31:24to see that. But thanks to this clip they posted,
01:31:28we can imagine and it's horrible,
01:31:30the US economy is at least 13 times bigger than Canada's,
01:31:34which we can visualize like this. Or to put it in
01:31:37other way, if you take just these four
01:31:39American companies to retail two tech,
01:31:42they're combined annual revenue gets pretty darn close to the
01:31:46annual economic output of Canada, like the whole country,
01:31:50Canada. And even if you take population out of it,
01:31:53like we ignore the fact that the US has 300 million more
01:31:57people, even on a per capita basis,
01:32:00Americans are more productive. They're per capita GDP
01:32:03dramatically higher than in Canada. So not only does
01:32:07Canada have fewer people, those people also each output
01:32:11less. And I'll give you one more maybe the most relevant
01:32:14comparison, which is a look at trade
01:32:17dependency. Last year, you know how much of Canada's
01:32:21total merchandise exports went to the United States? As in,
01:32:25how important is Canada's most important customer?
01:32:29Just over 71% of this country's goods exports went directly
01:32:33South. Translation, According to one geopolitical
01:32:37risk agency, Canada is extraordinarily
01:32:40exposed. the US, by the way, only 15% of their total goods
01:32:44exports go north. Which is to say, Canada is important,
01:32:48just maybe not existentially so in quite the same way. What
01:32:53that means is that those trade flows, both in both directions,
01:32:57are about 13 times more important
01:33:00for our economy than they are for the US economy. So here's
01:33:04the really important take away. You're following the news you
01:33:08keep hearing about dollar for dollar, dollar for dollar,
01:33:11dollar for dollar, retaliatory tariffs by the
01:33:15Canadian government. As in this latest trade war,
01:33:18the US imposes 50% tariffs on $20 billion US worth of
01:33:21Canadian products, and then Canada announces
01:33:25retaliatory tariffs on $20 billion US worth of American
01:33:29products. This isn't nearly as equal
01:33:31as it sounds. 20 billion or 27. 6 billion Canadian means more
01:33:36to Canada than it means to the US. The two countries are not
01:33:41playing with equal leverage, and Canada knows this. So when
01:33:46Mark Carney says so confidently we have everything we need to
01:33:51pivot and prosper, here's the question he has to
01:33:55answer. How do you fight a trade war you know you can't
01:34:00win? Canada
01:34:02is the smaller partner. But that's not the only math here.
01:34:10This won't be easy, and I won't pretend otherwise.
01:34:13The trade war is like a contest where you're punching yourself
01:34:16in the face, hoping the other side that's
01:34:18also punching itself in the face will decide that it makes
01:34:22more sense for it to just stop punching itself in the face and
01:34:25come to a deal. So when one country is so much more
01:34:28economically dependent on the other,
01:34:30what does standing up to Trump actually mean in practice? Well,
01:34:34there are two parts to this. One is about understanding
01:34:37that Canada, in order to inflict pain,
01:34:39doesn't need every American to suffer,
01:34:41it just needs enough of them to complain. President Trump is
01:34:45losing on tariffs. The cost for him is great declines in
01:34:48popularity. When it comes to tarsus. Our tariffs have not
01:34:52done anything for the people except make everything get more
01:34:55expensive. If you're starting a trade war with Canada is
01:34:58because you're the *******.
01:35:01And so that's when you see these very strategic but kind
01:35:05of weird attacks from Canada where you sort of wonder,
01:35:08is that a real thing? Like that big a thing?
01:35:11Bourbon band is Canada's Strait of Hormuz. I mean,
01:35:15I don't know if I'd go that far, but it probably does feel that
01:35:19way to somebody. The Kentucky Distillers Association might
01:35:23think so. It's president just a week ago referring to how
01:35:27Canada pulled bourbon off the shelves completely. That's
01:35:31actually worse
01:35:33than tariff. And that feeling goes back all the way to
01:35:35Trump's last major trade war with Canada at the beginning of
01:35:39last year. Prominent Kentucky lawmakers,
01:35:41including Republicans, speaking out against tariffs.
01:35:45And by the way, if you ever want to know
01:35:47whether a tactic is effective, see if your opponent tries to
01:35:51do it back to you. Speaking of which,
01:35:53think about all the American nooks and crannies Canada is
01:35:56digging into. Beyond booze. You really start to see this trade
01:36:00fight differently when you realize even the metals
01:36:03used in identification bans for migratory birds are
01:36:06specifically singled out for retaliation by Canada's finance
01:36:10department. Like someone thought to include them and
01:36:14wrote those words on an official document. Because
01:36:17they're creating as many constituencies of Americans
01:36:21against tariffs as they possibly can. So I don't know
01:36:24what you do with flanged casing heads,
01:36:27but I'll bet it's important. And Big Flange is upset their
01:36:31products are becoming more expensive
01:36:33in Canada. There are states that are deeply entwined with
01:36:36Canada's economy that deeply rely on Canada as an export
01:36:39market. And they are tired of seeing their products being
01:36:42tariffed out of a reasonable price range. In some ways,
01:36:45by implementing this kind of strategy,
01:36:47we are then leveraging the pressure that Donald Trump is
01:36:50getting internally in the United States to call this off.
01:36:54When all your eggs are in one basket,
01:36:56it's really hard to say the basket doesn't matter. But even
01:36:59if some of those eggs are in a slightly different basket,
01:37:02you can say, hey, I got options.
01:37:04And while we can go back and forth about how persuasive any
01:37:08of these measures or threats actually are,
01:37:11as in whether Canada can cause enough of a popular support
01:37:15sting to actually cause Trump to back down, there is another,
01:37:19much longer term stated goal. The most fundamental issue is
01:37:23that the cumulative US demands revealed that they wanted us to
01:37:28become even more reliant on them, not less. For example,
01:37:32the president's recent threats to
01:37:34embargo Bombardier aircraft, the threat that is in, you know,
01:37:38around trying to convince firms to relocate their entire
01:37:42production chains over to the United States. Now,
01:37:45this is all very fair, but honestly,
01:37:47it's also all very opaque because basically the entire
01:37:50negotiation is happening behind closed doors,
01:37:53which I should say, conservatives in this country
01:37:56see as a big problem. We don't know what cards either side is
01:38:00playing in real time because the game is unfolding in
01:38:04private.
01:38:05But Canada's official argument is that whatever the Trump
01:38:08administration's demands are, what they see as economic
01:38:12integration, Canada sees as a growing source
01:38:15of coercion. They wanted a say in our future trade agreements
01:38:19with other countries, and they were offering terms
01:38:22that would, over time, undermine some of the most
01:38:26important industries in our country, including automobiles,
01:38:30steel and forest products. It's about ensuring that no country
01:38:34can ever hold
01:38:35US hostage. That seems to be at the heart of the strategy on
01:38:38the US part, to use tariffs to beat us into
01:38:41submission, This assumption that we are
01:38:43going to be worse off. The reality is these are causing
01:38:47pain on both sides of the border. And all we're hoping is
01:38:50that the Americans will stop punching themselves in the face
01:38:54before it becomes too much for us to keep punching ourselves
01:38:57in the face. And so that's why Canada believes it can take on
01:39:01a giant, not because there is some major
01:39:03win here to be notched. If anything,
01:39:05it's the opposite. Carney is saying quite plainly,
01:39:09the old economic partnership. The good times are over. But in
01:39:13hitting back, refusing Trump's terms and
01:39:16instead looking for other partnerships that feel more
01:39:19cooperative, Canada's goal seems to be
01:39:22simply to get through this war without becoming permanently
01:39:26vulnerable to the next one.
01:55:06Is the US government still a reliable investment?
01:55:08The latest drama with the bond market has some investors
01:55:11smelling desperation. Treasury Secretary Scott Besson
01:55:14announced that the federal government would buy back more
01:55:17of its own bonds. They're gonna be going from the current size
01:55:21of 2 billion per operation to 4 billion per operation. Percent
01:55:24is brought a butter knife to a gunfight. He's just messing
01:55:28around in the markets are saying, you know what,
01:55:31You're not credible. Scott Bessent did something rarely
01:55:34done by a Treasury Secretary
01:55:35when he intervened in the bond market. It's rare for a reason.
01:55:38Bonds have long been considered a safe and reliable bet for
01:55:41investors. And the government needs investors to buy these
01:55:44bonds because it's spending way more money than it's bringing
01:55:47in. So why would Bessent suddenly decide to mess with
01:55:50that? Some economists say it's to
01:55:52lower the interest the government has to pay on this
01:55:54debt. So maybe they've taken this boring program,
01:55:57and what they're trying to do is beat up the bond market and
01:56:00say, behave yourself. We don't like
01:56:01high interest rates and we're going to intervene in the bond
01:56:04market in order to lower them. If we take a look at U.S. Treasury yields,
01:56:08that's the interest the government needs to pay
01:56:11investors on these bonds. Over the last few months,
01:56:14we can see the 30 year yield has been rising steadily. The
01:56:17same is true for the 10 year note. And just today,
01:56:20Treasury yields climbed higher after Federal Reserve Chairman
01:56:24Kevin Walsh expressed concerns about inflation during a
01:56:27keynote address about U.S. economic policy. Inflation is
01:56:30running above our 2% target,
01:56:32so the Fed's predominant focus right now should be on prices.
01:56:36Inflation is hovering at around 3.4%,
01:56:39well above the Fed's 2% target. And when investors expect
01:56:43inflation to stay above that target,
01:56:45they also expect a higher yield, a better return. So they're
01:56:49demanding the US pays them more to loan the government money
01:56:53because of higher perceived risk. Last week,
01:56:56that sentiment reached a 20 year high. The yield on the 30
01:57:00year U.S. Treasury bond has hit its highest
01:57:03level since 2007. And if you zoom out and look at the big
01:57:07picture of what the country is facing right now,
01:57:10you can see why investors view the US as higher risk. National
01:57:14debt just reached a new high $40 trillion. The war in Iran
01:57:17has no end insight and the Trump administration is
01:57:21unpredictable. Recent acceleration in inflation has
01:57:24raised uncertainty amongst investors about,
01:57:27you know what, what's what are the value of
01:57:30those dollars going to be when I get paid back in the future?
01:57:34Others worry that if Bessons expanded Treasury buyback does
01:57:37bring down bond yields and in turn interest rates,
01:57:40borrowing could tick up and spur inflation at a time when
01:57:44the Fed would arguably like to see inflation brought down.
01:57:48High inflation itself is very harmful to economic prosperity.
01:57:51If the Fed gets inflation wrong and judges the economy wrong,
01:57:55gets the worst of it,
01:57:58not the financial high Flyers, hard working Americans are the
01:58:01ones left to deal with inflation that's too high. And
01:58:04then there's the debt. The federal budget deficit is
01:58:07nearly 6% of GDP, nearly $2 trillion this year.
01:58:10And that's the thing that has people now starting to say,
01:58:13are you reaching a point that this is unsustainable?
01:58:16Are you reaching a point where we have to worry that you might
01:58:20go to the nuclear option or that you might try and devalue
01:58:23what you have to repay your investors to try and basically
01:58:27not have to pay back the full amount?
01:58:29The higher yield can also mean higher borrowing costs for home
01:58:33buyers or business owners taking out a loan,
01:58:35because government yields often act as baseline for interest
01:58:39rates in other parts of the economy,
01:58:41and the Trump administration has made clear its desire to
01:58:44keep those interest rates low. When our business is good,
01:58:48we should lower interest rates. I do think we could go into a
01:58:51series of rate cuts here. Low interest rates will solve
01:58:55everything. With elections coming up,
01:58:57maybe the exercise here is to try and stage manage the
01:59:00interest rate to a lower level so that you can go in front of
01:59:03a microphone and say we've helped alleviate some of your
01:59:06cost of living issues. But that's the other thing about
01:59:09Bessant surprise announcement, at least for now. It didn't
01:59:12actually work to lower the government's cost of borrowing.
01:59:15After he made his remarks, yields did fall sharply for 10
01:59:18and 30 year Treasury bonds, but then started rising again
01:59:21the very next day. That made investors think,
01:59:24I'm not going to change what I think a bond is worth
01:59:26because you're throwing around, what,
01:59:28a relatively small amounts of money and bomb land. So some
01:59:32experts say it's a sign that this announcement was never
01:59:35going to be enough to move the needle.
