01:00:28Friends need to stick together these times. The Prime Minister
01:00:30has called Canada the most European of non European
01:00:33countries. Now he's facing questions about how close he's
01:00:36willing to get. We're not looking to become a member of
01:00:40the European Union. The Mark Carney is traveling to France
01:00:43this week to deepen the relationship in a new way. You
01:00:46are looking and beginning. We'll begin discussions for
01:00:49unique
01:00:50alliance with the European Union. A senior Canadian
01:00:53official says they're looking at ways to partner more closely,
01:00:57including on critical minerals, AI,
01:01:00defence procurement and payment systems. Both Europe and Canada
01:01:04are under attack, frankly, by the United States on our
01:01:07economy, on our sovereignty, he says. That's pushing the EU
01:01:11and Canada closer together. And the message to Donald Trump is
01:01:15Canada has other options. We can sell elsewhere. We can have
01:01:19security partnerships elsewhere
01:01:21and that's what Mark Carney is going to be doing. Next week.
01:01:24Carney is set to deliver a speech to European Parliament
01:01:27that setting up an office in Ottawa and attend the European
01:01:31Commission President State of the Union address. Both
01:01:33speeches are expected to be about what more they can do
01:01:36together. We are really hoping to actually see something that
01:01:40goes a step further. That really says no,
01:01:42we are doing something of a new level here. Look at trade,
01:01:45it's about 8% of our trade with the EU. It should be much more
01:01:49than that.
01:01:50But the Conservatives say Kearney needs to lay out
01:01:53exactly what it will mean for Canadians. We want to find out
01:01:56what is actually being proposed and then of course, you know,
01:01:59are we going to be giving up any level of sovereignty or
01:02:03control to
01:02:04entity or bureaucracy that is thousands of kilometers away?
01:02:08A senior Canadian official I spoke to said that the goal of
01:02:11Canada getting closer to Europe is to strengthen the country.
01:02:14Sovereignty not limited. So any model that involves giving up
01:02:18independence has already been ruled out,
01:02:20including a title called Associate Member of the
01:02:22European Union. Actually, do you have any more details
01:02:25about what this deeper relationship could look like
01:02:28for Canadians? Well, Adrian, the official said that the
01:02:31government wants to give Canadians more options over
01:02:34where they can study to business and retire. But what exactly this closer
01:02:38relationship looks like and is labeled isn't clear yet. And

01:07:42U.S. President Donald Trump aggressively rejecting calls
01:07:45for the development of artificial intelligence to be
01:07:49slowed down. In a series of blunt social media posts,
01:07:52Trump described new warnings about AI as a hoax,
01:07:56saying the only control or guardrails that AI needs is a
01:08:00strong and smart high IQ president. Warning,
01:08:03don't kill the golden goose. It comes after a whistleblower
01:08:07warned that AI could kill humanity. You're building a
01:08:10human level or superhuman
01:08:12able mind without understanding what it wants or thinks or the
01:08:16way it thinks. And I think that intrinsically should be quite
01:08:20scary. Well, industry leaders are seeking
01:08:22regulation and a development slowdown. I don't think I fully
01:08:26just appreciated what it would actually be like when the
01:08:29progress was as fast as it was. These pleas are being met with
01:08:33skepticism by the White House. I feel a little bit weird about
01:08:36the fact that you have so many frontier AI tech companies kind
01:08:40of coming to the government and begging the government
01:08:43regulate them. It feels a little bit to me like a bit of
01:08:47a Trojan horse. The Trump administration has long framed
01:08:50AI development as a race between the US and China. I've
01:08:54said it from the beginning, whoever wins AI,
01:08:56and we're leading by a lot, whoever wins AI wins. In
01:09:00Beijing, there are also concerns about
01:09:02AI development, whether it poses threats to the
01:09:05Communist Party's rule and what it means for cyber security.
01:09:09Tech discussions will come up when President Xi Jinping
01:09:12visits Washington next week.
01:09:14It doesn't matter who builds the AI if the AI does not stay
01:09:18on a leash. Whatever decisions are made,
01:09:20the stakes could not be higher after a summer of disturbing
01:09:24discovery. Over the past couple of months,
01:09:26there have been real instances of AI's breaking out of
01:09:30containment, doing things that they were not
01:09:32instructed to do. Researchers looking at those events got a
01:09:36bit spooked. The closer people looked,
01:09:38the worse it got. Deck giants are expected to have an
01:09:41opportunity to discuss this with the president in person
01:09:45as a summit is being organized by the White House. So Donald
01:09:49Trump seems to view this as a race with China. But. But there
01:09:52are certainly other reasons why he may not want this to slow
01:09:56down. Yeah, part of the reason the stock
01:09:58markets have done so well through tariff uncertainty is
01:10:01because AI companies have put up such big numbers. And Trump,
01:10:05of course, looks at the markets as a
01:10:07measure of his own success.

01:28:13Frustrated and determined to join the conversation,
01:28:17she made a video of her own. It's an opportunity to shine
01:28:20light, I think, on
01:28:22an issue that's bigger than just one AD.
01:28:27Other Canadian athletes are taking a stand,
01:28:29too. Skeleton racer Hallie Clark posted
01:28:34and Sprint can newest Sophia Jensen among the many saying
01:28:37this is what women in sport look like. In a way,
01:28:39it's kind of like it's a step back,
01:28:41but then you also see a step forward and the reaction that
01:28:44this isn't normalized, that people are kind of like,
01:28:47oh actually no, we're not cool with that.
01:28:49Sweeney isn't just front and centre in the ad for the
01:28:51company Novick. She's also an equity holder. Neither

01:36:25we were hit with a tariff as well and we were very fortunate
01:36:28back then that Harley-Davidson, the Motor Company,
01:36:31they ate all the tariffs and they didn't pass any of that on
01:36:35to the customers. Harley-Davidson motorcycles are
01:36:38primarily imported from the US, and they are among the products
01:36:42that are impacted by Canada's
01:36:4350% retaliatory tariffs on American goods. Anytime that
01:36:47there's a big increase like that to any price,
01:36:50it's hard to pass that along to the customer. So us as a US,
01:36:54as a local dealer and a Motor Company,
01:36:56we do what we can to support the customers. However,
01:37:00Lafrance says the business is in a more fortunate position.
01:37:04Our inventory currently in our store right now is not tariffed
01:37:08and it's still at the original pricing. And so,
01:37:11and we're probably not going to receive any more motorcycles
01:37:15for the rest of this year. So we may,
01:37:17we're hoping we're going to dodge a bullet. Meanwhile,
01:37:21the Canadian company Iceberg Vodka is grappling with Trump's
01:37:25recent ban on Canadian imports, which includes alcohol. Now
01:37:28we're all just trudging through all of this uncertainty and
01:37:32volatility right now. It's this kind of uncertainty that's
01:37:36forcing the company to adapt on the fly as constant change
01:37:40becomes the new normal. We've been dealing with sort of the
01:37:43threat of tariffs ever since.
01:37:46We've sort of changed our game plan accordingly. To say we're
01:37:50into plan BC&D is would be an understatement,
01:37:53but Chicolini says pricing won't change. The Distillery

01:38:54losing medical coverage or family members asking for help.
01:38:58Police say these scams are reaching residents all across
01:39:02the province. Saskatchewan RCMP say every fraud is unique,
01:39:06and while text messages are common,
01:39:08so are emails and phone calls. Fraudsters are becoming more
01:39:12intelligent in their approaches and the ways that they're
01:39:16contacting victims, which means we need to be on
01:39:19alert as general citizens when we get these calls
01:39:22and and asking those tough questions. Is this legitimate?
01:39:26Do I need to make a call? Experts say scammers are
01:39:29becoming more sophisticated in the ways they operate. That's
01:39:33because AI tools make it easier for attackers to target more
01:39:37communities in less time. Even pre AI that attackers really
01:39:40just have to have
01:39:42will target, you know, thousands of people at the same
01:39:46time and they only really need one or two victims to make make
01:39:50it worth their while. Since June,
01:39:53the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre has processed more than 15,
01:39:57000 fraud reports. It says about 10,
01:39:59000 Canadians have been victims and all told they've lost more
01:40:03than $350 million. So how do we protect ourselves?
01:40:07Most fraudsters pressure their victims to take immediate
01:40:11action, making it hard.
01:40:13This says the situation. Both experts recommend the same set
01:40:17of actions. Stop and take a step back. Listen to your gut.
01:40:20If something feels off, it most certainly is. Do not
01:40:24respond or interact with the sender or link and take a
01:40:27screenshot of the conversation for future record. Contact
01:40:31someone you trust or a legitimate organization and ask
01:40:34questions. Official websites are also a quick,
01:40:37reliable source to confirm any information. Police also say
01:40:41it's important for people to report
01:40:44these frauds so authorities can keep track of trends and alert
01:40:54Some of the biggest names in AI, including the heads of Open AI,
01:40:57Anthropic, and even Elon Musk, are warning that development is
01:41:02moving too fast. 1 Insider has even said that AI could kill
01:41:06all humans by the end of the decade.
01:41:09So what does that message mean for people who are just
01:41:12entering the field? We asked University of Windsor
01:41:15computer science students how they see the risks. If you
01:41:18think it can end the world,
01:41:20I think it would be pretty hard for it to end the world. I
01:41:23think there's definitely potential for AI to be used in
01:41:26a way that might end the world. I think the chances that the
01:41:29world has ended just by like a rogue AI is pretty slim,
01:41:32especially like with what we have right now. I see it
01:41:35usually has like a marketing tool because it kind of feeds
01:41:38into the perception that AI is like really powerful and AI has
01:41:41a lot of potential to like disrupt and change everything.
01:41:44I guess not the first time that day ilab said that everything's
01:41:48going to change, The world's going to end, Claude is going to take over.
01:41:52So it's a little hard to take it seriously every single time
01:41:56they do it. A lot of the security policies,
01:42:00the permissions issues and things like that,
01:42:03that the development for for that takes longer than the AI
01:42:08takes to develop. So there's constantly new ways that the AI
01:42:12can find to kind of circumvent security and permissions. And
01:42:17so I think in that aspect, that's definitely something
01:42:21that needs to be considered.
01:42:23And baby, then kind of slowing down on AI
01:42:26development is a good idea. I don't know if slowing things
01:42:30down is going to work, first of all,
01:42:32because when you have new PhD students, a lot of researchers,
01:42:36they're excited to come up and with the next thing. So they
01:42:40want to really develop things faster. They tell students that
01:42:44you are in charge. You have to think of AI as a tool,
01:42:48but like any tool, it could be a dangerous tool if
01:42:51you don't use it adequately and properly.
01:44:51Chances are you seeing the ads for drugs like Ozempic and Will
01:44:53Govie. They're known as GLP one drugs. And they've changed the
01:44:56way that we deal with obesity and weight loss. They've also
01:44:59been a veritable gold mine for drug companies. Now,
01:45:13Jessica. Thanks. Yeah. So, I mean, for a family doctor,
01:45:16you know, these drugs have been so popular, such a rise in these products.
01:45:20What does that mean for you and your practice? Well, the first thing I will say is
01:45:24that these medications aren't for everyone who is seeking
01:45:26weight loss or diabetes. There are side effects and
01:45:29contraindications. But I will also say that for my patients
01:45:32who have historically struggled with managing their weight or
01:45:35managing their blood sugars, that it is somewhat of a game
01:45:38changer. And a major reason is because these kinds of
01:45:40medications work on multiple levels. So they increase
01:45:43insulin release from your pancreas to deal with sugar
01:45:46spikes. They slow down your digestion so it makes you feel
01:45:49fuller faster. And also I would say what my patients
01:45:51recognize and notice the most is that actually that food
01:45:55noise in their brain tends to quiet down because these
01:45:58medications act directly on brain receptors as well. Yeah,
01:46:01absolutely. And I mean, Health Canada has approved the
01:46:04generic versions of Ozempic, making it even more accessible,
01:46:07I would imagine with cost. I mean,
01:46:09do you find that patients are asking more for this drug?
01:46:12And do you feel any pressure in any sort of way to kind of
01:46:16deliver that to your patients? I would say that in my practice
01:46:19in Vancouver, so I also work in rural locations around Canada,
01:46:23then I probably get at least one patient per day asking me
01:46:26to prescribe this kind of medication and or following up
01:46:29on a patient I've already prescribed this medication to.
01:46:32Right now, about one in 10 adults in
01:46:33Canada are taking a medication like this. And this is a huge
01:46:36explosion of use compared to about five years ago when it
01:46:39was first popularized when in the US,
01:46:41they approved semaglutide, which is generic Ozempic for
01:46:44weight loss. And so people are just looking for effective
01:46:47weight loss measures. And this really looks like a solution
01:46:50for many people. Yeah. And so, you know,
01:46:52what are your concerns then as a family
01:46:54Doctor Who is looking to prescribe some of these to
01:46:57their patients? Side effects are a major
01:46:59concern for me. So I have started patients on these kind
01:47:02of medications and then they have too much nausea or
01:47:04Constipation or diarrhea, abdominal pain,
01:47:06fatigue or some of the common side effects and they have to
01:47:09stop them. Also, there are certain conditions
01:47:12that are contraindications, like you have a certain kind of
01:47:15family history or personal history of thyroid cancer or if
01:47:18you have a history of gallbladder disease or pancreas
01:47:20disease that can have severe side effects. And then
01:47:23something you also need to remember is like
01:47:25any kind of diet intervention, that if you stop it,
01:47:28often the weight just comes right back on. So about two
01:47:30months after you stop medications like Ozempic,
01:47:33typically patients start getting weight again and by one
01:47:35to two years off it, unless they have made major
01:47:38lifestyle changes like with diet and exercise,
01:47:40they'll gain back all the weight. So it's not a magic
01:47:43bullet. It does require lifestyle interventions like
01:47:45healthy diet and exercise for long term results. Yeah,
01:47:48we have about 3 seconds here. So just quickly,
01:47:50what do you see as kind of the short term future then of this
01:47:53drug that now of course is hopefully going to be, you know,
01:47:56prescribed in a generic level, so much more accessible to the
01:47:59regular person? Well, I see more and more patients
01:48:02requesting these kinds of medications and more and more
01:48:04doctors prescribing them. There have been pop up virtual
01:48:07clinics, all kinds of different ways
01:48:09that patients can now access these medications. And really I
01:48:12think the weight loss industry in Canada is worth billions of

02:08:20scary. Well, industry leaders are seeking
02:08:22regulation and a development slowdown. I don't think I fully
02:08:26just appreciated what it would actually be like when the
02:08:29progress was as fast as it was. These pleas are being met with
02:08:33skepticism by the White House. I feel a little bit weird about
02:08:36the fact that you have so many frontier AI tech companies kind
02:08:40of coming to the government and begging the government
02:08:43regulate them. It feels a little bit to me like a bit of
02:08:47a Trojan horse. The Trump administration has long framed
02:08:50AI development as a race between the US and China. I've
02:08:54said it from the beginning, whoever wins AI,
02:08:56and we're leading by a lot, whoever wins AI wins. In
02:09:00Beijing, there are also concerns about
02:09:02AI development, whether it poses threats to the
02:09:05Communist Party's rule and what it means for cyber security.

02:40:20If something feels off, it most certainly is. Do not
02:40:24respond or interact with the sender or link and take a
02:40:27screenshot of the conversation for future record. Contact
02:40:31someone you trust or a legitimate organization and ask
02:40:34questions. Official websites are also a quick,
02:40:37reliable source to confirm any information. Police also say
02:40:41it's important for people to report
02:40:44these frauds so authorities can keep track of trends and alert
02:40:54Some of the biggest names in AI, including the heads of Open AI,
02:40:57Anthropic, and even Elon Musk, are warning that development is
02:41:02moving too fast. 1 Insider has even said that AI could kill
02:41:06all humans by the end of the decade.
02:41:09So what does that message mean for people who are just
02:41:12entering the field? We asked University of Windsor
02:41:15computer science students how they see the risks. If you
02:41:18think it can end the world,
02:41:20I think it would be pretty hard for it to end the world. I
02:41:23think there's definitely potential for AI to be used in
02:41:26a way that might end the world. I think the chances that the
02:41:29world has ended just by like a rogue AI is pretty slim,
02:41:32especially like with what we have right now. I see it
02:41:35usually has like a marketing tool because it kind of feeds
02:41:38into the perception that AI is like really powerful and AI has
02:41:41a lot of potential to like disrupt and change everything.
02:41:44I guess not the first time that day ilab said that everything's
02:41:48going to change, The world's going to end, Claude is going to take over.
02:41:52So it's a little hard to take it seriously every single time
02:41:56they do it. A lot of the security policies,
02:42:00the permissions issues and things like that,
02:42:03that the development for for that takes longer than the AI
02:42:08takes to develop. So there's constantly new ways that the AI
02:42:12can find to kind of circumvent security and permissions. And
02:42:17so I think in that aspect, that's definitely something
02:42:21that needs to be considered.
02:42:23And baby, then kind of slowing down on AI
02:42:26development is a good idea. I don't know if slowing things
02:42:30down is going to work, first of all,
02:42:32because when you have new PhD students, a lot of researchers,
02:42:36they're excited to come up and with the next thing. So they
02:42:40want to really develop things faster. They tell students that
02:42:44you are in charge. You have to think of AI as a tool,
02:42:48but like any tool, it could be a dangerous tool if
02:42:51you don't use it adequately and properly.
02:44:51Chances are you seeing the ads for drugs like Ozempic and Will
02:44:53Govie. They're known as GLP one drugs. And they've changed the
02:44:56way that we deal with obesity and weight loss. They've also
02:44:59been a veritable gold mine for drug companies. Now,
02:45:16you know, these drugs have been so popular, such a rise in these products.
02:45:20What does that mean for you and your practice? Well, the first thing I will say is
02:45:24that these medications aren't for everyone who is seeking
02:45:26weight loss or diabetes. There are side effects and
02:45:29contraindications. But I will also say that for my patients
02:45:32who have historically struggled with managing their weight or
02:45:35managing their blood sugars, that it is somewhat of a game
02:45:38changer. And a major reason is because these kinds of
02:45:40medications work on multiple levels. So they increase
02:45:43insulin release from your pancreas to deal with sugar
02:45:46spikes. They slow down your digestion so it makes you feel
02:45:49fuller faster. And also I would say what my patients
02:45:51recognize and notice the most is that actually that food
02:45:55noise in their brain tends to quiet down because these
02:45:58medications act directly on brain receptors as well. Yeah,
02:46:01absolutely. And I mean, Health Canada has approved the
02:46:04generic versions of Ozempic, making it even more accessible,
02:46:07I would imagine with cost. I mean,
02:46:09do you find that patients are asking more for this drug?
02:46:12And do you feel any pressure in any sort of way to kind of
02:46:16deliver that to your patients? I would say that in my practice
02:46:19in Vancouver, so I also work in rural locations around Canada,
02:46:23then I probably get at least one patient per day asking me
02:46:26to prescribe this kind of medication and or following up
02:46:29on a patient I've already prescribed this medication to.
02:46:32Right now, about one in 10 adults in
02:46:33Canada are taking a medication like this. And this is a huge
02:46:36explosion of use compared to about five years ago when it
02:46:39was first popularized when in the US,
02:46:41they approved semaglutide, which is generic Ozempic for
02:46:44weight loss. And so people are just looking for effective
02:46:47weight loss measures. And this really looks like a solution
02:46:50for many people. Yeah. And so, you know,
02:46:52what are your concerns then as a family
02:46:54Doctor Who is looking to prescribe some of these to
02:46:57their patients? Side effects are a major
02:46:59concern for me. So I have started patients on these kind
02:47:02of medications and then they have too much nausea or
02:47:04Constipation or diarrhea, abdominal pain,
02:47:06fatigue or some of the common side effects and they have to
02:47:09stop them. Also, there are certain conditions
02:47:12that are contraindications, like you have a certain kind of
02:47:15family history or personal history of thyroid cancer or if
02:47:18you have a history of gallbladder disease or pancreas
02:47:20disease that can have severe side effects. And then
02:47:23something you also need to remember is like
02:47:25any kind of diet intervention, that if you stop it,
02:47:28often the weight just comes right back on. So about two
02:47:30months after you stop medications like Ozempic,
02:47:33typically patients start getting weight again and by one
02:47:35to two years off it, unless they have made major
02:47:38lifestyle changes like with diet and exercise,
02:47:40they'll gain back all the weight. So it's not a magic
02:47:43bullet. It does require lifestyle interventions like
02:47:45healthy diet and exercise for long term results. Yeah,
02:47:48we have about 3 seconds here. So just quickly,
02:47:50what do you see as kind of the short term future then of this
02:47:53drug that now of course is hopefully going to be, you know,
02:47:56prescribed in a generic level, so much more accessible to the
02:47:59regular person? Well, I see more and more patients
02:48:02requesting these kinds of medications and more and more
02:48:04doctors prescribing them. There have been pop up virtual
02:48:07clinics, all kinds of different ways
02:48:09that patients can now access these medications. And really I
02:48:12think the weight loss industry in Canada is worth billions of
02:48:15dollars. And this is just the demand for this kind of
02:48:17medication is another manifestation of that.
