01:05:42U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a major change to his
01:05:44proposal for a massive triumphal arch in Washington.
01:05:48He now says it's going to double as a military complex
01:05:51housing snipers and drones. Journalist Kate Fishers in
01:05:54Washington with the details.
01:05:57Yeah. He put this on his Truth Social platform this morning
01:06:01and essentially said that instead of kind of being this
01:06:05monument or visitor destination, it was now going to be this
01:06:09military complex, which would house drones and
01:06:12snipers as well as having them be able to be activated from
01:06:16there, as well as being this huge
01:06:18storage facility for them as well. He said it would be top
01:06:22grade and that there would be no facility like it in the
01:06:26world. Well, the National Capital Planning
01:06:29Commission have said that it was only ever put to them as a
01:06:33visitor destination with an observation deck. So this is
01:06:37clearly a huge change in its its reason for being. And they
01:06:41say that despite many federal reviews so far of this art. It
01:06:46has never been mentioned as being needed for national
01:06:50security. The administration is saying they don't believe they
01:06:54need congressional approval for this because they say
01:06:58Congress around 100 years ago approved a similar kind of arch
01:07:02in a similar location. But critics of this are saying that
01:07:05now that the the use for this monument has changed,
01:07:09there needs to be further scrutiny of what this is. And
01:07:12they will be fighting it all the way. That's veterans groups
01:07:16as well as historical preservation groups. Let's talk
01:07:20a bit about preservation, specifically in the city of
01:07:23Washington, because just earlier this week,
01:07:26Kate, we had news that the president
01:07:29was threatening to tear down the Kennedy Centre
01:07:32because he couldn't keep his name on it. We've seen him
01:07:35demolish parts of the White House to create this ballroom.
01:07:39We've seen some disastrous renovations of the Washington
01:07:42reflecting Pool. I just wonder how the archway now falls into
01:07:46this vision that the president has for Washington.
01:07:53Well, I think there are a lot of
01:07:55similarities. He's really trying to put his stamp on the
01:07:58city before he ends his term in office. You can probably see
01:08:02behind me that the East wing of the of the White House has kind
01:08:06of vanished since he's been here. And yes,
01:08:09this arch is another of those attempts. A lot of analysts
01:08:12suggesting that the reason now that he's suggesting it becomes
01:08:16a military facility is a way of trying to persuade and persuade
01:08:20authorities that it is necessary for national security.
01:08:23Because there have been so many complaints about the idea of
01:08:27this huge arch being built, not least from veterans who say
01:08:31it will over shadow the Arlington National Cemetery
01:08:34where so many fallen service members are buried. So, yes,
01:08:38I think it is symptomatic of what Donald Trump is trying to
01:08:42do in Washington. And this argument of making it as part
01:08:45of a national security need rather than just something he
01:08:49wants to do is also being echoed here in now this. These

01:22:07support for Quebec sovereignty runs deep. But with the
01:22:11provincial election less than two weeks away,
01:22:16many voters here have different priorities,
01:22:18including the economy amid U.S. trade war. Thurmont paper. So I
01:22:22says everyone is paying for the high cost of tariffs,
01:22:25including here at the grocery store. Says this senior
01:22:30trade war is really bad, says this voter who wants
01:22:34stability amid broad economic anxiety. Support for Quebec
01:22:38independence is at its lowest level in decades. Just 27% of
01:22:42Quebecers say they would vote yes if another referendum was
01:22:47held, according to a recent poll.
01:22:50The party Quebecois campaigning for change No,
01:22:53promising not to hold a referendum until U.S. President
01:22:57Donald Trump is out of office. And of course,
01:23:00the question of the tariffs is part of the election. And our
01:23:04answer is that we have the best team. The nationalist but
01:23:08staunchly federalist CAQ, deeply unpopular in the polls
01:23:12until recently, is using the trade war to
01:23:14attempt a political comeback. Leader Kirsten Frechette
01:23:18arguing Quebeckers needs stability.
01:23:21The Mama now is not the time to launch a referendum,
01:23:24she says. In fact, it's the worst moment in the
01:23:27last 50 years. There's no party right now that is trying to
01:23:31make Quebec independence the question of the ballot. This
01:23:34political scientist says Trump's return to office
01:23:37appears to have caused a sharp drop in support for sovereignty.
01:23:41It's not a decline that suggests that it has been a
01:23:44change of conviction, but rather a change of context.
01:23:48And it's really the context right now that is seen as not
01:23:51ideal to support sovereignty. Talk of sovereignty still
01:23:55continues to be an issue of debate on the campaign trail,
01:24:14are creeping into your grocery store receipts. When will it
01:24:17happen and why? Well, that depends on what you're
01:24:20buying. The immediate consumer impact is pretty
01:24:23straightforward. The Canadian counter tariffs range anywhere
01:24:26from 25 to 50%. If you're buying, say,
01:24:28American milk or cheese, American honey or American
01:24:31makeup, you'll likely be paying more as
01:24:33soon as the tariffed inventory hits the shelves,
01:24:36keeping in mind that retailers still have some under tariff
01:24:40stock to sell first.
01:24:41Further down the road is when you'll start to see the tariffs
01:24:44on raw materials like steel, aluminum and paper start to
01:24:48show up. The consumer side will show up sooner because that's
01:24:51on finished goods. But the long term impact,
01:24:54or medium term I guess, is that as Canadian suppliers
01:24:57buy some of the industrial raw materials like packaging and
01:25:01things of that nature from the US,
01:25:03that'll start to show up in consumer goods over the next
01:25:06several months as those products are made and
01:25:09distributed to Canadian retailers. So what are the
01:25:12major grocers doing? Metro, who own Food Basics,
01:25:15say they haven't seen price
01:25:17increases from suppliers due to the tariffs. Yeah, law blah,
01:25:20who own law, laws, No frills, Shoppers Drug Mart. Several
01:25:23other grocery store banners say they're pushing back on
01:25:27suppliers when they believe that increases aren't justified,
01:25:30but when they are justified. When the terrorists increase
01:25:33the cost for Loblaws, the company says that that is
01:25:36going to reflect on the shelf. Penny for penny. To make things
01:25:40easier, they are marking products with
01:25:42the letter T to identify that it's been impacted by tariffs.
01:25:45They're also keeping up with the Maple Leaf mark to identify
01:25:49products of Canada or things made in Canada. The product of
01:25:52Canada is when 98
01:25:53percent is from Canada. Made in Canada is 51%. And then you
01:25:56have other things like design in Canada. Think you know what,
01:26:00we're possible. If you can choose a product that has some
01:26:03form of Canadian content, then you're helping Canadian.
01:26:06If you want to avoid buying tariff goods at the grocery
01:26:09store. It's pretty simple if you take the time to check the
01:26:13labels. But as we move out of Canadian growing season,
01:26:16that's when things become a little bit more challenging. We
01:26:19can still buy Canadian milk. We can still buy Canadian cheese,
01:26:23beef, pork, frozen vegetables, all of those sorts of things.
01:26:26We can still buy Canadian, but in December and January
01:26:29we're not going to buy domestic broccoli and we're not going to
01:26:32buy domestic Brussels sprouts. So come winter time,
01:26:35you can still avoid tariffs on a lot of goods,
01:26:37but if you want to avoid them entirely,
01:26:39you might have to swap out some of those weekly staples in your

01:26:48Gas prices are up on average. It's the highest it's been in
01:26:51the province since 2022. How do you feel about the price at the
01:26:56pump? Gas prices are way too high man
01:26:58$20 fill up and a $20 fill up anymore,
01:27:01that's for sure. I really feel sorry for those persons who are
01:27:05really pressured and got lots of
01:27:09problems trying to make ends meet.
01:27:13I wish there was something everyone could do to reduce it
01:27:16because everything we do here in this province is affected by
01:27:19gasoline and especially the diesel. Just look at the price
01:27:23today. Well, it's not fair. It's gotta come
01:27:25down at some point. You know, it's crazy man. And like,
01:27:28I get it. It's like my car used to cost $60 to fill up and now
01:27:32it costs like 80. That's a lot of money when I have to fill it
01:27:35up 3 or 4 * a month, you know? Right now,
01:27:37gas is $2.19 in the Avalon Peninsula,
01:27:39223 and Central 220 in Corner Brook and 2:27 in Labrador West.
01:27:43Gas price analyst says that this province has among the
01:27:46highest prices in the country, at least for now. When it comes
01:27:50to gas, Newfoundland, the most expensive province by
01:27:54quite a stretch. 217.9 for gasoline. That's even about $0.
01:27:5713 above PEI. Who's it? About 204 BC at 198. Everyone
01:28:01else below that the cheapest, Alberta at about 177 today. So
01:28:04Newfoundland tends to be the highest for now. It looks like
01:28:08the trend for the foreseeable future would be that diesel
01:28:22people could walk, take the bus or carpool until

01:28:32If you filled up your car recently,
01:28:34you may have cringed at the price at the pump,
01:28:37but for those who rely on diesel,
01:28:39the picture is a lot more daunting. Of course is bad
01:28:42because it will be increase everything right?
01:28:45That's not a good for the company or for the owner
01:28:48operator. Also because sometime I filled up diesel from outside
01:28:52the Alberta they always prefer to You need to fill up your
01:28:56fuel in the Arboretum. 1 truck driver I spoke to told me a
01:29:00gravel company refused to deliver to his
01:29:02construction site because of diesel prices. Others say while
01:29:06it doesn't impact their personal pockets,
01:29:08they are noticing a significant difference in their daily stop
01:29:12for fuel. For our company, I think right now we are
01:29:15spending double, yeah,
01:29:19all the work is going on. Sometimes we have to stay home
01:29:22just to wait for the loads because of the digit prices.
01:29:25But the price of diesel goes beyond those who fill up at the
01:29:28station. Diesel powers much of the economy, including freight trucks, trains,
01:29:32agriculture and construction. For people who are the backbone
01:29:36of the economy, the trucks, the trains,
01:29:38the jet planes that move all the goods,
01:29:40there's a need for them to continue to do it. And so
01:29:43they'll they'll have to do it. They have to hope they can pass
01:29:46through their higher costs to to their customers.
01:29:49Says this isn't just a Canadian issue either,
01:29:52It's worldwide. The oil issue from the Strait of Hormuz and
01:29:57Middle East is bad and so that's pushing oil prices up.
01:30:01But even more it's the the refineries that are struggling.
01:30:05So the world is short millions of barrels a day of refined
01:30:09products that normally would be available on the market.
01:30:13Madison says even if prices go down as we get more supply,
01:30:17there isn't enough refining capacity
01:30:20to turn it into the things we use. As for the truck drivers I
01:30:24spoke to, they say they are concerned
01:30:26about the potential of diesel going up and also the cost of
01:30:30regular gas getting out of hand. Nicole Healey, CBC News,

01:32:45We're here because things need to change in regards to
01:32:48violence against women, in particular intimate partner
01:32:52violence. There are too many women dying from intimate
01:32:55partner violence and and overall too many women are
01:32:58still victims of it. Several hundred women and allies
01:33:01marched from Dorchester Square to Place de Morales decrying
01:33:04violence against women. You really want to make a
01:33:07difference. So here you'll find many people from different
01:33:10shelters, different organizations,
01:33:12women centres. The timing of this mobilization is
01:33:15intentional.
01:33:16Time is just four days ahead at the Quebec party leaders final
01:33:20debate and their message is clear. Well, promises are fine,
01:33:24but we want commitments, you know,
01:33:26that we want first of all, investments in their resources
01:33:30for women's security. We want also like prevention education.
01:33:34We need the housing crisis also to get better. And you know,
01:33:38these are all factors that make women who are victims really
01:33:43vulnerable to get out of that abusive relationship. 5
01:33:46organizations supporting
01:33:48women who are victims of conjugal violence joined forces
01:33:52to put an end to what they're calling a national crisis. At
01:33:55SOS we receive between 50, 000 and 60,
01:34:02not enough is done. 17 women have died from intimate partner
01:34:06violence in Quebec so far this year,
01:34:08according to the Montreal police. Five of them happened
01:34:11in the Montreal area. That's already more than an all of
01:34:152025, when 14 Quebec women died and
01:34:17alleged intimate partner violence cases.
01:34:20And I'm here because we need to put an end to it,
01:34:24like the next one is still alive,
01:34:26so we better fight now. I came to support because I was a
01:34:30victim from domestic violence too for five years. And now I'm
01:34:34just trying to help. The March also focus on the fact that
01:34:38many of the victims in 2026 are women of colour. One advocate
01:34:42notes that Indigenous women are often at the top of the list.
01:34:48This specific no reality this time
01:34:53in a response as a trees work underneath gone. While members
01:34:57of the political class were present on Saturday,
01:35:00organizers stressed that what's needed are solutions that can
01:35:04be quickly put into effect. The fact that we're here today,
01:35:07it shows that we need more than hope, you know,

01:35:19My grandchildren are a fearful of the future and I'm here as a
01:35:22grandparent to say not good enough. David Swan is with the
01:35:26group Seniors Climate Witness. 15 years ago,
01:35:28he was the leader of the Alberta Liberal Party,
01:35:31and he says that since then, the climate crisis has only
01:35:35gotten worse. And it's so profoundly heartbreaking to see
01:35:39a federal government that has championed the environment do
01:35:42anything but now. Swan was among the hundreds who marched
01:35:46through downtown Ottawa yesterday, waving
01:35:49signs in wearing T-shirts supporting climate action. They
01:35:52pushed back against the federal Liberals recent climate policy,
01:35:56and many came from across the country to do it. We've stopped
01:35:59in about 20 cities. Michael Pilani is a cofounder of
01:36:02Seniors Climate Witness. He says the group collected
01:36:05stories and photos of climate disasters as they caravanned
01:36:09their way to Ottawa by electric vehicle. So we simply want to
01:36:12deliver these photos so that MP's,
01:36:14when they're discussing energy policy and pipelines,
01:36:17they have a vivid face, a picture
01:36:19of how climate change is impacting people across the
01:36:23country. Seniors Climate Witness planned to gather
01:36:26outside the House of Commons on Tuesday to deliver their
01:41:04Kirsten Hankey's family says her death last month was
01:41:07preventable. She started a home with me.
01:41:12We have animals, we have a house,
01:41:15we have all these memories that she doesn't get to experience
01:41:19anymore.
01:41:21Kirby says Hankie, who was his partner,
01:41:23fell at the entrance of their home and broke her ankle. But
01:41:27when she arrived at Royal University Hospital for surgery
01:41:31days later, Kirby says the staff sent her
01:41:33home. We were met with nurses that were dumbfounded as to who
01:41:37we even were.
01:41:40The first two hours of our hospital visit was spent
01:41:43explaining what her injury was,
01:41:47explaining why we're here and what surgery needed to be done.
01:41:51Five days later, Hankie collapsed at home. Her
01:41:54family says a blood clot that had developed in her ankle
01:41:57reached her lungs.
01:41:59She was taken off life support on August 20th and a statement
01:42:03to CBC, the Saskatchewan Health
01:42:05Authority, calls what happened to Hankey a
01:42:07critical incident and it's initiated a formal legislative
01:42:11process to review the incident and disclose the findings to
01:42:14her family. Health Minister Jeremy Cockrell said in a
01:42:17statement that he expects the SHA to thoroughly examine the
01:42:21circumstances surrounding the incident,
01:42:23but her family only found out about that review when CBC
01:42:27shared the SH a statement with them. It shouldn't
01:42:30even be news or an e-mail that that should have to be sent.
01:42:34It's obvious on the
01:42:37in the situation at whole that it should absolutely be
01:42:40reviewed. There's no question it should. A Ministry of Health
01:42:44report shows there were 88 critical incidents in the 2025
01:42:47to 2026 fiscal year. The Saskatchewan NDP says it points
01:42:51to wider issues around surgery wait times. This is
01:42:54are not one off
01:42:58instances.
01:43:00There are people and families and consequences. For now,
01:43:18And this is a deep fake doctor Francois Marquis. It's an AI
01:43:22generated video of his face and voice used to advertise drugs
01:43:27on social media. And this time I'm selling something that is
01:43:31supposed to fix your joints. I had patients, actual victims,
01:43:35come for me in the ICU wanting to get their money back. And
01:43:39he's not the only prominent Canadian physician being deep
01:43:43faked during the aggressive wave of mandatory COVID vaccination
01:43:48back in the pandemic, online ads used an AI generated
01:43:51version of Canada's former top Dr. Teresa Tam,
01:43:54the Canadian government Department of Health and BC's
01:43:57provincial health officer, Doctor Bonnie Henry. It is
01:44:00still happening on and off. It's very disturbing. The
01:44:03challenge now is AI video keeps getting better and tougher to
01:44:07spot.
01:44:09One study found up to half of individuals couldn't tell the
01:44:12difference between authentic videos and deep fakes. I think
01:44:16that anytime content is being pushed to you and they're
01:44:19selling a product, that should be a major red flag.
01:44:23That's because of strict standards enforced by medical
01:44:26colleges in Canada, which don't allow doctors to
01:44:29advertise regulated drugs or medical devices. The federal
01:44:33government says anyone who may have been a victim of fraud or
01:44:37cyber crime can file a police report
01:44:39or contact the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre. There's a faint
01:44:43Paul and a fake Brad running around TikTok,
01:44:46but doctors who've tried those routes say fake ads are tough
01:44:50to take down. I started complaining to the police and
01:44:53basically I was told that there's nothing they can really
01:44:57do. The bottom line? Be skeptical of any video
01:45:00showing a doctor pedaling health products before you hand
01:53:52Wake up, Daddy.
