00:04:33REFERENDUM FOR THE PROVINCE TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY. LEAVE THE COUNTRY. SO IT'S HARD TO SAY THE IMPACTS SO IT'S HARD TO SAY THE IMPACTS THAT WE WILL SEE ON BUSINESS AND
00:04:37THAT WE WILL SEE ON BUSINESS AND PEOPLE. PEOPLE. WE MIGHT HAVE TO SEE THAT IN THE WE MIGHT HAVE TO SEE THAT IN THE COMING YEARS.
00:04:41COMING YEARS. >> Eli: GREAT TO HEAR THIS
00:06:48The story of 10s of thousands of Ukrainian children who have
00:06:52been abducted to Russia, given new families and new
00:06:56names,
00:06:57subjected to heavy indoctrination and even
00:07:00military training to turn them into Russian soldiers. For
00:07:04years we have been fighting to bring our children home. So
00:07:08it's horrible, horrible situation and
00:07:11childhood has an expiration date. How Canada is leading an
00:07:15international effort to help. Want to be clear at the outset
00:07:21of who's responsible? Putin has stolen Ukrainian
00:07:25children.
00:07:28Russia's campaign to steal Ukrainian children began back
00:07:32in 2014, when Putin first used Russian
00:07:34soldiers in unmarked uniforms to take over the Crimean
00:07:38Peninsula.
00:07:40Daria to Machova and Matt Fichas were children in Crimea
00:07:44at that time, but have a clear memory of the
00:07:47event.
00:07:48So you bought the dinner. Despite the fact that I was a
00:07:52child, I still understood and I
00:07:54understood that something terrible is happening,
00:07:56that this is not just a change in the law,
00:07:59but it's actually an occupation. It is really a great military
00:08:03crime. They said to us, you're Russian now,
00:08:06You lived all of your life in Russia. A lot of stuff changed.
00:08:11We start to learn Russian anthem at school,
00:08:14learn Russian songs, learn Russian poems,
00:08:16Scotian Rockham. Every year indoctrination became worse and
00:08:21worse. It was constant. It was in the textbooks. It was also
00:08:25in our free time. It was both at school,
00:08:28on the street and on TV.
00:08:31Russia's child stealing campaign became even more
00:08:34pronounced after the full scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
00:08:39Rostislav, from the Herson region,
00:08:41was 16 when Russian soldiers occupied his hometown. He was
00:08:45interviewed by UA TV in Ukraine.
00:08:50I went out and at first I was scared. They said you're being
00:08:53sent away to study. I told them I did not want to,
00:08:56that I'd rather stay home. After I said that,
00:08:58a soldier pointed his rifle at me and said pack your things,
00:09:02you're leaving now.
00:09:03Many Ukrainian children were herded into military style
00:09:07camps in Russia, where they faced relentless
00:09:10indoctrination.
00:09:12We had to stand for the Russian anthem,
00:09:14listen to them go on about how great Russia was,
00:09:17and if I didn't sing the Russian anthem,
00:09:19I was punished. They'd take you and put you in an isolation
00:09:22cell.
00:09:23As the children got older, the military training
00:09:28intensified. A military training started from my 6th
00:09:33grade. We have loading, reloading weapons. Of course,
00:09:38as we have March courses, we go to military camps and we
00:09:44have our uniform as a guidance
00:09:48visco.
00:09:50The military training for the boys was to fight with their
00:09:53weapons and the girls were involved in medical and
00:09:56tactical medicine training. You had to be able to tamp. You had
00:10:00to stop the bleeding.
00:10:02The wartime abduction of children is a clear crime under
00:10:06the Geneva Convention. But Vladimir Putin wasn't trying to
00:10:09hide his child kidnapping operation. In fact,
00:10:12he was bragging about it.
00:10:16He met frequently and publicly with Maria Lavrova Belova,
00:10:20the Russian Presidential Commissioner for Children's
00:10:23Rights, who was in charge of the
00:10:26abduction Operation Lavovi Belova had herself filmed
00:10:29leading groups of Ukrainian children onto aircraft and
00:10:33occupied eastern Ukraine, and she personally adopted one
00:10:36of them herself. She noticed that many of them were very pro
00:10:40Ukrainian and anti Putin.
00:10:44Just thought they spoke badly about the president,
00:10:47said nasty things and sang Ukraine's anthem. This stupid
00:10:50Ukrainian. She even complained that one child she personally
00:10:54adopted was showing signs of resistance.
00:10:57See that he didn't want to live in Russia. He was always on pro
00:11:01Ukrainian websites. Whenever I saw it, I'd tell him, listen,
00:11:04you're in Russia now, you need to change your
00:11:07attitude somehow.
00:11:09Many child abduction victims made desperate attempts to
00:11:13contact relatives in Ukraine to beg for rescue,
00:11:16Bought in your Mohet from Mariupol,
00:11:19even sent a videotaped message to President Zelensky. Yeah,
00:11:23I bogged in your Mohan ask you, Vladimir Alexandrovich to help
00:11:27me return home. Even before turning 18,
00:11:30Bogdan had received his draft notice into the Russian army.
00:11:34If your man and you turn 18 years old,
00:11:37they almost immediately drafted you to Russian army.
00:11:43The Save Ukraine Foundation is a non governmental group
00:11:47devoted to tracking down and rescuing Ukrainian children.
00:11:51This Ukrainian documentary shows how children are often
00:11:55given different Russian names and hidden away in rural areas
00:11:59of Russia. But to find them, the Save Ukraine Foundation
00:12:02uses facial recognition technology to scour the
00:12:05Internet for group photos and documents that might reveal
00:12:08their location.
00:12:11In a rare case, Bogdan your Mohan was released
00:12:14from Russia and reunited with his sister in Ukraine.
00:12:18The Russians offered to trade. We give them soldiers and they
00:12:21give us children. That's beyond comprehension,
00:12:24beyond international law.
00:12:26Ukrainian human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner
00:12:30Oleksandra Matvichuk. When I speak about small kid,
00:12:33like two or three-year old, it means that Justin
00:12:37several months or years, this kid would forget his or
00:12:41her real name, his or her real father and
00:12:45mother. So it's horrible, horrible situation and
00:12:48childhood has an expiration date. Their children from
00:12:53occupied territories, they're losing their childhood.
00:12:57We lose this children. So we have doubled our efforts to
00:13:02save them. Canada to do this. Mikula Kuleba is the founder of
00:13:07the Save Ukraine organization. We are running out of time
00:13:12for these children
00:13:14and we're losing every day someone who taken forcibly to
00:13:18Russian army.
00:13:20And nobody knows now how thousands of these kids
00:13:25were killed on the battlefield at the Russian soldiers,
00:13:28and they didn't want to do this.
00:13:31In March 2023, the International Criminal
00:13:34Court in The Hague issued arrest warrants for Vladimir
00:13:37Putin and Maria Lavrova Bulova, charging them with war crimes
00:13:41regarding the unlawful deportation and transfer of
00:13:44children.
00:13:47International war crimes investigator Wayne Jordash says
00:13:50it often takes years to build a case against perpetrators,
00:13:54but the child abduction case against Putin was an exception.
00:13:58He number one signed presidential decree to make
00:14:02adoptions easier. He's on video discussing with the
00:14:06commissioner for children's rights in Russia about their
00:14:11deportations or as he would refer to them as evacuations.
00:14:16He provided evidence against himself. And I think the
00:14:20evidence related to crimes, which really shocked the public
00:14:25conscience. Following years of this week in Toronto,
00:14:29Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand hosted
00:14:33major international conference on the repatriation of
00:14:37Ukrainian children. Canada has committed almost $7 000,
00:14:41000 to the effort, but will it lead anywhere?
00:14:44How do you say Putin's role in this?
00:14:47Do you hold him personally responsible? Yes,
00:14:50he is responsible for the policies that are leading
00:14:54Ukrainian children to be stolen from their families,
00:14:57indoctrinated and in fact militarized. I'm sure you
00:15:01encounter people who say, come on,
00:15:04Putin and Lavovi Bellavia are never going to be
00:15:07prosecuted. Get real. How do you answer that?
00:15:11We are bringing Ukrainian children home. And we are
00:15:15getting real by ensuring we do whatever we can to bring these
00:15:20children home to their families, ensure that they have a means
00:15:25to receive support for the psychological trauma that they
00:15:29have endured as a result of indoctrination, indoctrination,
00:15:34militarization, and essentially
00:15:37the Russian attempt to convert these Ukrainian children into
00:15:41members of Russia's war machine. Do you think he'll face justice
00:15:46for this?
00:15:49My hope is that we ensure the full return of all Ukrainian
00:15:53children and every single person who has committed an
00:15:57injustice in stealing these children
00:16:01face the consequences that international law requires. I'm
00:16:06so grateful for Canadian leadership and because Canadian
00:16:10government supported us. You've saved 2000 out of 22,
00:16:15000. How do you measure success?
00:16:19We have to talk about not only 20,
00:16:21000 officially abducted who have been identified by the
00:16:24Ukrainian government. We have to talk about all children who
00:16:28trapped in occupation and many families who and children
00:16:32who've been brought back from Russia captivity.
00:16:36When I ask them what is
00:16:40justice for you
00:16:42and they're telling I lost everything. I lost my friends,
00:16:46my school, my relatives
00:16:49and my, my, my town
00:16:53and justice for me it just to
00:16:57to live in peace in my town with my friends and to go to my
00:17:03school with my parents
00:17:06and this is justice for these kids.
00:17:13Daria and Matvey were both rescued from Russia by the Save
00:17:17Ukraine organization and now they have fallen in love and
00:17:20married. They were brought to Toronto this week for the
00:17:23International Conference and hoped to raise awareness for
00:17:27the campaign to save Ukrainian children.
00:19:33Until she died at just 43 years old,
00:19:35Carla van Kessel fought to raise awareness about cervical
00:19:40cancer. It was just a lot of pain, hip pain, back pain,
00:19:43that pelvic pain area there for someone who is so in tune with
00:19:48her body,
00:19:50she knew something was wrong. Cervical cancer is caused by
00:19:55the human papilloma virus. Now, a new study finds infections
00:19:59like HPV cause one in eight cancers. Researchers estimate
00:20:04in 2024 that added up to 2.3 million new cancer cases
00:20:08worldwide, and most are preventable. We
00:20:11can vaccinate against them, we can test and treat for them
00:20:15quite easily. The leading infections were the bacteria H
00:20:19pylori, which can
00:20:21increase the risk of stomach cancer if not screened for and
00:20:25treated by antibiotics, and HPV, which causes all cervical
00:20:29cancers, genital and some head and neck
00:20:31cancers, but can be prevented by vaccines.
00:20:35And researchers have now made new links between cancer and
00:20:40infections. We are learning that they can cause an expanded
00:20:44number of other cancers. Notably,
00:20:46Epstein Barr virus can cause gastric cancers. In Canada,
00:20:51research suggests infections cause roughly 4% of total
00:20:55cancer cases. HPV is certainly an infection that we're keeping
00:20:59an eye on. After years of declines in cervical cancer
00:21:03last year, rates plateaued.
00:21:05An HPV vaccination is lagging. Only about 5 provinces are
00:21:10above 80% and I think at least one is as low as 66%. The
00:21:14National Action plan to eliminate cervical cancer by
00:21:182040 requires vaccination and screening rates to be at 90%.
00:21:22Realistically, the vaccinations are they,
00:21:25they're the big, the big thing that we need to
00:21:28do. Rob Whitmill hopes to see a day when cervical cancer is no
00:21:33longer a threat to Shawna Reed. CBC News Toronto.
00:21:39All newborns in New Brunswick can now be vaccinated against
00:21:43RSV for free. The province announced it will cover the
00:21:47cost of the shot that can run between 200 and $300. We have
00:21:51between 6065 hundred babies born in New Brunswick every
00:21:55year
00:21:56and now, starting October 13th, all babies under 2 will be
00:22:00eligible to receive a free RSV immunization during their first
00:22:05RSV season. RSV, or respiratory syncytial virus,
00:22:08is commonly spread from the fall season to the early spring
00:22:12in Canada. Most people feel mild symptoms in the throat and
00:22:16lungs, but for some it can cause
00:22:19complications like pneumonia, sometimes leading to hospital
00:22:23stays. The risk is higher for older and immunocompromised
00:22:27patients and babies. It's one of the leading causes of
00:22:31respiratory illness in infants and can lead to emergency room
00:22:35visits, hospitalization and in some
00:22:37cases intensive care treatment. As a physician that's worked in
00:22:41our emergency room and seen case with RSV,
00:22:44I can tell you that if we can cut those back by significant
00:22:48amounts of volume in our emergency departments will go
00:22:51down. This is an investment of $3.8 million to protect
00:22:55newborns and infants from RSV. This is about
00:22:58making sure families have protection when and where they
00:23:01need it. The RSV adult vaccine has been free for certain
00:23:05seniors in New Brunswick since 2024. Since then,
00:23:08those over 60 living in long term care,
00:23:10certain other types of care, or those waiting for care can
00:23:14get immunized for free. And anyone over 75 years old and
00:23:17Indigenous adults over 60 can also get the shot for free.
00:23:21Infants who were deemed high risk could get certain RSV
00:23:24antibodies. The number of children we would have seen
00:23:28admitted to the hospital
00:23:29or who present in the ER with RSV symptoms,
00:23:32that number will be reduced by 80% because the vaccine will
00:23:37now prevent those cases from becoming serious or from those
00:23:41illnesses from from taking taking hold. RSV is a
00:23:45reportable disease in New Brunswick. According to recent
00:23:49public health data. RSV cases are considered low but were
00:23:53above average compared to the two last seasons. Babies born
00:23:57before the RSV season between April 1st
00:24:00in October 12th can now get immunized at public health
00:24:03clinics or through their primary care provider. And
00:24:06those who will be born later in October into March of next year
00:24:10during the RSV season will also be able to get the shot before
00:24:14their discharge from the hospital.
00:24:19The Chief Public Health Office says the flu and respiratory
00:24:22season has arrived early this year. On PEI. It normally comes
00:24:25later in the fall, but this year is different.
00:24:28It's the earliest that we've ever seen
00:24:32this number of cases. We've sometimes had sporadic cases,
00:24:35but certainly this number of cases
00:24:38last week and also so far this week. So it is an indication it
00:24:42is circulating. Morrison says there's already been a couple
00:24:45hospitalizations and an outbreak at a long term care
00:24:48facility. She says the flu season is different every year.
00:24:52Many other parts of the country are in the same position. She
00:24:55says one of the best ways to protect yourself is through the
00:24:59free vaccine, influenza vaccine. It's not a
00:25:02perfect vaccine. It won't protect everyone from getting
00:25:05influenza, but it does decrease your risk
00:25:07of being hospitalized. It decreases
00:25:09the length of time you're ill and it decreases your risk of
00:25:14complications like even heart attack, stroke,
00:25:17COPD exacerbations. Dr. Morrison says there are also
00:25:22vaccines available for COVID and RSV,
00:25:24especially for those who are at highest risk of complications.
00:25:29We encourage them to be vaccinated as well with COVID
00:25:34vaccine and and then the RSV vaccine,
00:25:36which was universal last year for those 75
00:25:40years of age and older and those 60 to 74 with certain
00:25:43risk factors, it's also available. In
00:25:46addition to getting vaccinated, Dr. Morrison says you can
00:25:50protect yourself and others by washing your hands and coughing
00:25:54into your sleeve. If you're sick,
00:25:56stay home. And if your child is unwell or has a fever,
00:25:59they shouldn't go to school. You can get the flu,
00:26:03COVID and RSV vaccine at public health nursing clinics across
00:26:07PEI and some family physicians, nurse practitioners,
00:26:10pharmacies are offering the flu and COVID vaccine.

00:30:27Hi, I'm Ian Hannemann, seeing the host of Cross
00:30:29Country Checkup. We're about to start the show and we have lots
00:30:32to talk about. But first, here are a few stories to get
00:30:35you ready for that conversation today.
