00:59:20To truly understand a news story, you need to connect with the people in the moment.
00:59:24Everybody's in panic mode, witnessing their struggles and
00:59:28resilience.
00:59:30I'm OK. This is really my last hurrah. Investigating and
00:59:33digging for the fact it's actually a picture of me and

01:04:16CAPTAIN WAS ABLE TO UNLOCK THE COCKPIT AND ALLOW THE PASSENGERS COCKPIT AND ALLOW THE PASSENGERS TO COME TO HIS AID.
01:04:19TO COME TO HIS AID. IF HE HAD BEEN UNABLE TO DO THAT
01:04:23It is absolutely shocking that the people on this plane
01:04:26survived.
01:04:28Look, this is video taken by a
01:04:31passenger. Pure panic onboard fly Dubai flight 1073 after the
01:04:35copilot of the plane allegedly stabbed the pilot. The entire
01:04:40plane at this point at grave risk of crashing and everyone
01:04:44was screaming, there were children crying.
01:04:47Except a whole series of things happen. Highly improbable,
01:04:51almost impossible, it seems to me
01:04:55as a commercial.
01:05:00All of these incredible things together end up saving
01:05:04everybody's life against all odds. And I'm going to show you
01:05:07how
01:05:12there were more than 170 people on board this flight,
01:05:16which is a daily flight running from Dubai International in the
01:05:20United Arab Emirates to Ben Gurion International near Tel
01:05:24Aviv in Israel. This is what that flight path normally looks
01:05:28like. It's about a three hour flight,
01:05:30except on September 30th, things would take a very abrupt
01:05:34turn here. But when I say abrupt turn,
01:05:37I don't mean left or right, I mean down.
01:05:40At around 8:21 AM local time over Saudi airspace,
01:05:43the plane lost altitude more than 17,
01:05:46000 feet in under a minute and it speed up dramatically as it
01:05:51pitched towards the earth
01:05:55Jordanian border. Suddenly the aircraft dropped a massive
01:05:59massive turbulence for 2030 seconds. We know now what was
01:06:03happening around this time was the planes copilot allegedly
01:06:07attacking the planes captain nearly killing him. The
01:06:11struggle beginning after he stabbed the other pilot and
01:06:15sent the jet plunging thousands of meters in just seconds. At
01:06:19this point, with the attacker taking
01:06:21control, potentially looking to crash
01:06:24the plane, the only way that people on
01:06:27board survive is if the captain survives. And improbably,
01:06:31he does. This is him, Captain Smith Matcha from India.
01:06:34He somehow manages to survive a surprise attack from an armed
01:06:39assailant in close quarters while flying a plane. But he's
01:06:43down and in a real bad way. One of the passengers,
01:06:46a dentist would later tell CNN. Much other suffered massive
01:06:50blood loss, was severely wounded. He was
01:06:53covered in cuts, his head,
01:06:55his hands, they were practically sliced
01:06:57open, almost severed in two.
01:06:59Historically when 1 pilot turns on the other. There are clear
01:07:04examples where this ends in disaster for everybody on board.
01:07:08In 2015, Germanwings flight 9525,
01:07:10the copilot locks the captain out of the cockpit when he
01:07:14leaves to use the bathroom. He then manually steers the plane
01:07:18into a rapid descent, crashing into the French Alps.
01:07:22Everybody on board dies. Or just a couple years before that,
01:07:26in 2013, same thing, except this time it's the
01:07:29captain on a flight from Mozambique who locks the
01:07:32copilot out of the cockpit. He crashes the plane into a
01:07:36National Park in Namibia, once again killing everybody on
01:07:40board. But this time, Captain Matcha survives the
01:07:43attack from his copilot and manages to do one other
01:07:46incredible thing that's single handedly triggers a series of
01:07:51events that keep that plane in the air.
01:07:58So imagine the copilot is believed to have attacked the
01:08:02captain with some sort of stabbing weapon,
01:08:05leaves him bleeding on the ground. I've seen multiple
01:08:09reports that he was so grievously wounded he was on
01:08:13the verge of passing out completely even that he did at
01:08:16one point, but just before he did he
01:08:19somehow unlocks the cockpit door. They redesigned airplanes
01:08:23to, in fact, create
01:08:25this impenetrable door between the cabin and the cockpit. That
01:08:29door remains locked from the incident. Problem with
01:08:32yesterday is that the threat did not come from the cabinet.
01:08:36This is the critical point at which the entire arc of this
01:08:39crisis pivots. It's where passengers begin to realize not
01:08:43just that something has gone terribly wrong,
01:08:46but that they can do something about it.
01:08:49The plane just started going up and down,
01:08:52says 1 passenger. We started hearing screams. The plane,
01:08:55according to those on board, nose dived at a sickening angle.
01:08:59Overhead bins popped open and luggage flew out. Other
01:09:03accounts spoke of incredible G forces almost pinning
01:09:06passengers to their seats as the plane itself plunged and
01:09:10leveled repeatedly. It was like the craziest Holocaust that you
01:09:14ever did, but like, multiplied by
01:09:17father. It felt like something really wrong is happening here.
01:09:21So for some passengers to have overcome this chaos and to have
01:09:25the instinct to burst into the cockpit to see what was wrong,
01:09:29Yet another incredible development,
01:09:32without which I don't know how this plane survives. Eventually,
01:09:36one man bursts in and grabs the assailant, the copilot,
01:09:40from behind. Yes,
01:09:44the first Beta beta message.
01:09:50That's one of the many heroes of this story. By all accounts,
01:09:54wrestling control of the plane from the alleged hijacker
01:09:58happened very quickly. The dentist I mentioned earlier,
01:10:02he says he tied the attacker up using headphone cords and
01:10:05plastic zip ties. He then started tending to the wounded
01:10:09pilot. He was in serious condition, not critical,
01:10:12perhaps, but serious due to the massive
01:10:15blood loss. And that would have looked like
01:10:19and a warn you this is the most graphic part of the story
01:10:22because it's at this point we have video of the state of the
01:10:26lanes captain as he's lying injured on the floor.
01:10:30But this was the scene you're looking at. 2 bloodied pilots
01:10:34on the floor on this passenger jet in mid air,
01:10:37passengers holding one of them down,
01:10:40treating the other. The reason I show that to you is because I
01:10:44want you to understand how unreal this all would have felt
01:10:48to everybody on board. And yet we have yet another improbable
01:10:52act from the very same passenger who claims to have
01:10:56subdued the attacker in the 1st place. He single handedly pulls
01:11:00the plane out of its nose dive.
01:11:03Uh,
01:11:06yeah.
01:11:08He would later reveal he learned that move from TV shows
01:11:12pulling on the pilot steering column,
01:11:14the yoke to pitch the planes nose up. They actually pull up
01:11:18the stick the the airplane stick. The plane was decreasing
01:11:22in very, very sharp angle. It is a
01:11:24tricky maneuver, you know, not normal or a commercial
01:11:27airliner to be in that flight position to be nose down at 600
01:11:31miles an hour. But even all this,
01:11:33as improbable as it all is put together,
01:11:36only leads to yet another impossible question.
01:11:40How do you land a plane when you have no pilot?
01:11:48In a normal emergency, if such a thing even exists,
01:11:52the pilot is doing more than just flying the plane and
01:11:55landing it. They are the planes eyes and ears,
01:11:59navigating weather patterns, how much fuel they've got left,
01:12:03and which runways are even available and safe. There was
01:12:07nothing but desert beneath US1 passenger told CNN. We feared
01:12:11being taken to an enemy country or landing in the middle of the
01:12:15desert. We didn't know who to trust. Now,
01:12:18if this were a Hollywood movie, the scripted stroke of luck
01:12:22here would be that someone on board is simply bold enough to
01:12:26do something like land a plane that they've never done before
01:12:30and it just happens to work out. But in real life,
01:12:34there just happened to be another set of pilots on board,
01:12:38an off duty British pilot along with another, together,
01:12:41a pair of relief pilots who were meant to fly the next
01:12:45flight
01:12:46was fortunate that they were on an airplane that had this extra
01:12:51deadheading crew, as we call it. You know,
01:12:53but to actually jump into a pilot seat when you've got
01:12:57another pilot next to you that potentially was suicidal and
01:13:01the captain of the aircraft neutralized as well was
01:13:05absolutely heroic action. Those 2 pilots took control of the
01:13:09plane, diverted to an airport not in
01:13:12Israel where they were originally going,
01:13:14but in nearby Saudi Arabia instead.
01:13:17Which interestingly is a country Israel has no formal
01:13:21diplomatic relations with, but that years ago did open its
01:13:25airspace. 2 passenger planes flying to and from Israel. So
01:13:29they had control of the plane and a safe runway to land on.
01:13:33But there was still one more problem. The plane was badly
01:13:37damaged. When I saw the images of the aircraft on the ground
01:13:41with the rudder section torn out,
01:13:43I immediately had a cold chill. If you've ever looked at the
01:13:47back of a plane,
01:13:49you know what that vertical tail looks like. But what's a
01:13:52little more subtle than that is the rudder,
01:13:55which is this movable flap that controls the side to side
01:13:58swinging of the lanes nose. It's basically stabilizing the
01:14:02plane. If you RIP that out, as you can see in these photos
01:14:05here of this fly Dubai flight shortly after emergency landing,
01:14:09you have two problems. 1 is that you're possibly bleeding
01:14:13hydraulic fluid out all over the place,
01:14:15which affects a whole bunch of other systems on the plane. But
01:14:19two,
01:14:20landing becomes more dangerous. Letters are the key element of
01:14:23aircraft stability, particularly at landing. And in
01:14:27this case the runner was not there. The airplane went
01:14:30through extensive aerodynamic shot. All of the experts I've
01:14:34heard on this believe it was the planes nosedive. We
01:14:37mentioned at the start that sudden steep descent that
01:14:41likely applied enormous aerodynamic forces to the tail,
01:14:44enough to RIP that part of the rudder right off. But somehow
01:14:48those two relief pilots
01:14:50managed to land the plane regardless,
01:14:56so now investigators have their work cut out for them. Why did
01:15:00this copilot hijack the plane, and what was he trying to do?
01:15:04Did he improvise the weapon he used,
01:15:07or did he smuggle it on board? And Speaking of getting on
01:15:10board, should intelligence or law
01:15:13enforcement officers have known to apprehend him before he got
01:15:17on that plane? Those answers will hopefully
01:15:20come with time, but all we know now is that
01:15:23this plane load of passengers somehow pulled off the
01:15:26impossible. The captain surviving A devastating attack,
01:15:30managing with his last sliver of consciousness to open the
01:15:33cockpit door, allowing passengers undergoing
01:15:36extreme G forces to storm that cockpit, subdue the attacker,
01:15:40pull the plane out of the nosedive just in time. And then
01:15:44they just happened to have a pair of pilots on hand who
01:15:47grabbed the controls, find a safe runway to land on,
01:15:50and manage to do so with a severely damaged rudder in a
01:15:54plane that no inspector would ever consider airworthy.
01:15:57I don't know what you call that, but as terrible and traumatic
01:16:02as it was for everyone involved, those folks undeniably got very,
01:16:07very lucky.
01:19:09The governor has entrusted my office with this investigation
01:19:13and we do not take that responsibility lightly. That's
01:19:16New York's attorney general now in charge of the investigation
01:19:20into an alleged gang rape at Cornell University. The alleged
01:19:242024 crime at a frat house at the Ivy League school is
01:19:27drawing outrage from around the world. New York's governor has
01:19:31appointed Letitia James to take the lead after saying she has
01:19:35lost faith in how the case has been handled. For many
01:19:39Canadians, the details of the Cornell case
01:19:41may sound familiar. Legal experts
01:19:43pointed out the parallels between it and the 2018 Hockey
01:19:47Canada case that was settled last year. So to dig deeper
01:19:50into what these similarities reveal has turned to Gillian
01:19:53Nature. She is a lawyer who has represented victims of sexual
01:19:57violence. Julian, appreciate you coming in and
01:20:00talk to us. Thank you. Appreciate the invitation. So
01:20:03you told CBC that this is more than a coincidence with the
01:20:06details we know so far. What do these cases have in common?
01:20:10I think that the parallels are overwhelming when you really
01:20:13just pair it back.
01:20:15They both started as nights out for young people. There was
01:20:19alcohol involved and started with a consensual encounter
01:20:23between two young people, but quickly spiraled out of
01:20:26control when a young woman found herself in a room heavily
01:20:30intoxicated and a young man, unbeknownst to her,
01:20:34invited a chat chat group full of men to come in and have sex
01:20:38with her. And I think that's in some ways just where the
01:20:42parallels begin. And so that's where the parallels
01:20:46again, and then they continue from,
01:20:48from what we know. You think I, I mean,
01:20:51I think that that the way that both victims,
01:20:54from what I understand, responded to what they endured
01:20:58in the aftermath are also strikingly similar and will
01:21:02sound extremely familiar to any woman who's ever endured any
01:21:07kind of sexual assault. I see this all the time in my
01:21:11practice where at first there's often a denial that sets in or
01:21:16desire to sort of
01:21:17minimize, normalize, regularize, believe you can put it behind
01:21:21you and just move on with your life. And as you process that
01:21:25experience and as the trauma becomes sort of too large
01:21:29internally to ignore, that is when the allegations
01:21:33come forth. Unfortunately, when you're dealing with legal
01:21:37allegations sort of that, that initial psychological
01:21:40response is so often used against these women. And when
01:21:44they do report
01:21:46laws different in Canada and the US,
01:21:49when it comes to all of that that you just laid out there,
01:21:52they're largely the same. New York has one particular
01:21:56exception, which is that,
01:21:59and I am not a New York lawyer, but if you consume alcohol
01:22:03voluntarily, then you cannot raise
01:22:05intoxication as something vitiated your consent shy of
01:22:09being blackout drunk. And to speak candidly,
01:22:12I think that's insane. It's the ultimate in a sort of blame the
01:22:16victim piece of legislation where essentially you're saying
01:22:20to young women, well, if you go out and get drunk,
01:22:24even though you're of age and it's legal to consume alcohol
01:22:28problem, that's your
01:22:29problem. You are responsible for what happens to you
01:22:32thereafter. Wow, OK. That that is a key
01:22:34difference. I did not realize both OEM and Jane Doe,
01:22:37they chose to pursue civil cases rather than criminal ones.
01:22:40Tell us why that that's significant. I think it's again
01:22:43in the in the hockey case. That's right. Of course,
01:22:46there's a different standard of proof. And so when you report
01:22:49allegations to the police and they choose to prosecute,
01:22:52they have to prove those allegations beyond a reasonable
01:22:55doubt. That's an incredibly high standard,
01:22:58very difficult to overcome. And so in all the hand wringing
01:23:01we've done over the years about how to secure better conviction
01:23:05rates and sexual assault, you know,
01:23:07the the criminal system does what it's intended to do. It's
01:23:11not a truth seeking process. It is designed to rigorously test
01:23:15evidence and decide if there's sufficient evidence to deprive
01:23:19somebody of their liberty in a criminal context. Civil cases
01:23:22sort of weigh the allegations and decide what is more likely
01:23:26than not true. And so all of the information that's come out
01:23:30with the text change both
01:23:32the night of and after the fact, which is which is the number.
01:23:36Another parallel between the Hockey Canada case and the
01:23:39Cornell case. People will be questioned on those. You get
01:23:43the fuller picture. And so it is very common for victims to
01:23:46pursue civil cases. What do you make of what we were learning
01:23:50today where a special prosecutor has been appointed
01:23:54to look into this Governor held a news conference and and where
01:23:58this may be going next? I think it's all the people in
01:24:01authority trying to
01:24:03Telegraph that they are taking these situations seriously. I
01:24:07don't have high hopes for our prosecution in the Cornell case,
01:24:11just like, candidly, I didn't have high hopes for a
01:24:15prosecution in the Hockey Canada case. Again,
01:24:18because you see these young women coping in this situation
01:24:23by fawning, by pleasing, by trying to, you know,
01:24:26avoid creating an immediate conflict that could potentially
01:24:31jeopardize their physical safety
01:24:33and by normalizing after the fact. And that's going to be
01:24:36the kiss of death when it comes to proving allegations beyond a
01:24:40reasonable doubt. Jillian, it was good of you to come in
01:24:43and talk to us about an important story. Thank you.
01:24:46Jillian Nachu is a lawyer and legal expert in gender based violence.
01:26:56The story of 10s of thousands of Ukrainian children who have
01:27:00been abducted to Russia, given new families and new
01:27:03names,
01:27:05subjected to heavy indoctrination and even
01:27:08military training to turn them into Russian soldiers. For
01:27:12years we have been fighting to bring our children home. So
01:27:16it's horrible, horrible situation and
01:27:19childhood has an expiration date. How Canada is leading an
01:27:23international effort to help. Want to be clear at the outset
01:27:28of who's responsible? Putin has stolen Ukrainian
01:27:33children.
01:27:36Russia's campaign to steal Ukrainian children began back
01:27:40in 2014, when Putin first used Russian
01:27:42soldiers in unmarked uniforms to take over the Crimean
01:27:46Peninsula.
01:27:48Daria to Machova and Matt Fichas were children in Crimea
01:27:52at that time, but have a clear memory of the
01:27:55event.
01:27:56So you bought the dinner. Despite the fact that I was a
01:28:00child, I still understood and I
01:28:01understood that something terrible is happening,
01:28:04that this is not just a change in the law,
01:28:07but it's actually an occupation. It is really a great military
01:28:11crime. They said to us, you're Russian now,
01:28:14You lived all of your life in Russia. A lot of stuff changed.
01:28:18We start to learn Russian anthem at school,
01:28:21learn Russian songs, learn Russian poems,
01:28:24Scotian Rockham. Every year indoctrination became worse and
01:28:29worse. It was constant. It was in the textbooks. It was also
01:28:33in our free time. It was both at school,
01:28:35on the street and on TV.
01:28:39Russia's child stealing campaign became even more
01:28:42pronounced after the full scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
01:28:47Rostislav, from the Herson region,
01:28:49was 16 when Russian soldiers occupied his hometown. He was
01:28:53interviewed by UA TV in Ukraine.
01:28:58I went out and at first I was scared. They said you're being
01:29:01sent away to study. I told them I did not want to,
01:29:04that I'd rather stay home. After I said that,
01:29:06a soldier pointed his rifle at me and said pack your things,
01:29:09you're leaving now.
01:29:11Many Ukrainian children were herded into military style
01:29:15camps in Russia, where they faced relentless
01:29:17indoctrination.
01:29:20We had to stand for the Russian anthem,
01:29:22listen to them go on about how great Russia was,
01:29:24and if I didn't sing the Russian anthem,
01:29:26I was punished. They'd take you and put you in an isolation
01:29:30cell.
01:29:31As the children got older, the military training
01:29:36intensified. A military training started from my 6th
01:29:41grade. We have loading, reloading weapons. Of course,
01:29:46as we have March courses, we go to military camps and we
01:29:52have our uniform as a guidance
01:29:56visco.
01:29:58The military training for the boys was to fight with their
01:30:01weapons and the girls were involved in medical and
01:30:04tactical medicine training. You had to be able to tamp. You had
01:30:08to stop the bleeding.
01:30:10The wartime abduction of children is a clear crime under
01:30:14the Geneva Convention. But Vladimir Putin wasn't trying to
01:30:17hide his child kidnapping operation. In fact,
01:30:20he was bragging about it.
01:30:24He met frequently and publicly with Maria Lavrova Belova,
01:30:28the Russian Presidential Commissioner for Children's
01:30:31Rights, who was in charge of the
01:30:33abduction Operation Lavovi Belova had herself filmed
01:30:37leading groups of Ukrainian children onto aircraft and
01:30:40occupied eastern Ukraine, and she personally adopted one
01:30:44of them herself. She noticed that many of them were very pro
01:30:48Ukrainian and anti Putin.
01:30:51Just thought they spoke badly about the president,
01:30:54said nasty things and sang Ukraine's anthem. This stupid
01:30:58Ukrainian. She even complained that one child she personally
01:31:01adopted was showing signs of resistance.
01:31:05See that he didn't want to live in Russia. He was always on pro
01:31:09Ukrainian websites. Whenever I saw it, I'd tell him, listen,
01:31:12you're in Russia now, you need to change your
01:31:15attitude somehow.
01:31:17Many child abduction victims made desperate attempts to
01:31:20contact relatives in Ukraine to beg for rescue,
01:31:24Bought in your Mohet from Mariupol,
01:31:26even sent a videotaped message to President Zelensky. Yeah,
01:31:31I bogged in your Mohan ask you, Vladimir Alexandrovich to help
01:31:35me return home. Even before turning 18,
01:31:38Bogdan had received his draft notice into the Russian army.
01:31:42If your man and you turn 18 years old,
01:31:45they almost immediately drafted you to Russian army.
01:31:51The Save Ukraine Foundation is a non governmental group
01:31:55devoted to tracking down and rescuing Ukrainian children.
01:31:59This Ukrainian documentary shows how children are often
01:32:03given different Russian names and hidden away in rural areas
01:32:06of Russia. But to find them, the Save Ukraine Foundation
01:32:10uses facial recognition technology to scour the
01:32:13Internet for group photos and documents that might reveal
01:32:16their location.
01:32:19In a rare case, Bogdan your Mohan was released
01:32:22from Russia and reunited with his sister in Ukraine.
01:32:26The Russians offered to trade. We give them soldiers and they
01:32:29give us children. That's beyond comprehension,
01:32:32beyond international law.
01:32:34Ukrainian human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner
01:32:38Oleksandra Matvichuk. When I speak about small kid,
01:32:41like two or three-year old, it means that Justin
01:32:45several months or years, this kid would forget his or
01:32:49her real name, his or her real father and
01:32:53mother. So it's horrible, horrible situation and
01:32:56childhood has an expiration date. Their children from
01:33:00occupied territories, they're losing their childhood.
01:33:05We lose this children. So we have doubled our efforts to
01:33:10save them. Canada to do this. Mikula Kuleba is the founder of
01:33:14the Save Ukraine organization. We are running out of time
01:33:20for these children
01:33:22and we're losing every day someone who taken forcibly to
01:33:26Russian army.
01:33:28And nobody knows now how thousands of these kids
01:33:33were killed on the battlefield at the Russian soldiers,
01:33:36and they didn't want to do this.
01:33:39In March 2023, the International Criminal
01:33:42Court in The Hague issued arrest warrants for Vladimir
01:33:45Putin and Maria Lavrova Bulova, charging them with war crimes
01:33:49regarding the unlawful deportation and transfer of
01:33:52children.
01:33:55International war crimes investigator Wayne Jordash says
01:33:58it often takes years to build a case against perpetrators,
01:34:01but the child abduction case against Putin was an exception.
01:34:06He number one signed presidential decree to make
01:34:10adoptions easier. He's on video discussing with the
01:34:14commissioner for children's rights in Russia about their
01:34:19deportations or as he would refer to them as evacuations.
01:34:23He provided evidence against himself. And I think the
01:34:28evidence related to crimes, which really shocked the public
01:34:33conscience. Following years of this week in Toronto,
01:34:37Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand hosted
01:34:41major international conference on the repatriation of
01:34:44Ukrainian children. Canada has committed almost $7 000,
01:34:48000 to the effort, but will it lead anywhere?
01:34:52How do you say Putin's role in this?
01:34:54Do you hold him personally responsible? Yes,
01:34:58he is responsible for the policies that are leading
01:35:01Ukrainian children to be stolen from their families,
01:35:05indoctrinated and in fact militarized. I'm sure you
01:35:09encounter people who say, come on,
01:35:11Putin and Lavovi Bellavia are never going to be
01:35:15prosecuted. Get real. How do you answer that?
01:35:19We are bringing Ukrainian children home. And we are
01:35:23getting real by ensuring we do whatever we can to bring these
01:35:28children home to their families, ensure that they have a means
01:35:33to receive support for the psychological trauma that they
01:35:37have endured as a result of indoctrination, indoctrination,
01:35:42militarization, and essentially
01:35:45the Russian attempt to convert these Ukrainian children into
01:35:49members of Russia's war machine. Do you think he'll face justice
01:35:54for this?
01:35:57My hope is that we ensure the full return of all Ukrainian
01:36:01children and every single person who has committed an
01:36:05injustice in stealing these children
01:36:09face the consequences that international law requires. I'm
01:36:14so grateful for Canadian leadership and because Canadian
01:36:18government supported us. You've saved 2000 out of 22,
01:36:22000. How do you measure success?
01:36:26We have to talk about not only 20,
01:36:29000 officially abducted who have been identified by the
01:36:32Ukrainian government. We have to talk about all children who
01:36:36trapped in occupation and many families who and children
01:36:40who've been brought back from Russia captivity.
01:36:44When I ask them what is
01:36:48justice for you
01:36:50and they're telling I lost everything. I lost my friends,
01:36:54my school, my relatives
01:36:57and my, my, my town
01:37:01and justice for me it just to
01:37:05to live in peace in my town with my friends and to go to my
01:37:11school with my parents
01:37:14and this is justice for these kids.
01:37:21Daria and Matvey were both rescued from Russia by the Save
01:37:25Ukraine organization and now they have fallen in love and
01:37:28married. They were brought to Toronto this week for the
01:37:31International Conference and hoped to raise awareness for
01:37:35the campaign to save Ukrainian children.

01:46:36The youth vote, it seems like every single
01:46:38election it's a topic of conversation and this time
01:46:41around it's no different. Their youth,
01:46:43they are very preoccupied about the cost of living,
01:46:46the housing crisis, the rent was going always up. I
01:46:50ask young voters to go and vote for change or voters are
01:46:53younger. We have to make sure that those people get out and
01:46:57vote. But what do actual young adults think and do they feel
01:47:00like they're concerns are being addressed during this election
01:47:04campaign? I think they should
01:47:06include more the the younger people of our province is
01:47:09certainly concerning parties. Andrew looked lovely Community
01:47:13three, like I need to take public
01:47:15transport to go here to go to school and I don't have a house
01:47:19yet, so it's stuff that bothers me
01:47:22now. The facts speak for themselves. Young people vote
01:47:25at much lower rates than other age groups. During Quebec's
01:47:29last election in 2022, just over half of the people
01:47:32aged 35 and under voted, whereas the turnout rate for
01:47:36people aged 65 and plus
01:47:37was almost 80%. Young people are also underrepresented in
01:47:41Quebec's National Assembly. During this last parliamentary
01:47:44session, not a single MNA was under the
01:47:47age of 35. So how do you ensure that young people see
01:47:50themselves in politics? Well, I think one of these solutions
01:47:53is to present more candidates in in places that where they
01:47:57have a chance to win and to send more young people at the
01:48:00National Assembly. I think that's when people,
01:48:03young people will see another young people getting involved
01:48:07with themselves.
01:48:08I think that's when people will see that they can do a change.
01:48:11They can get involved. Now what about getting young people out
01:48:15to the polls? Some say going back to the
01:48:18basics might be the key. I think we need to be talking
01:48:21more about the fact that we have a healthy democracy,
01:48:24but that it's not a guarantee. And let's talk to youth as
01:48:28young as Grade 5 and 6 about this. Winrow says she's feeling
01:48:32hopeful this election campaign, hopeful that the voter turn out
01:48:35will be higher than in 2022. Yeah.

01:51:10All newborns in New Brunswick can now be vaccinated against
01:51:13RSV for free. The province announced it will cover the
01:51:17cost of the shot that can run between 200 and $300. We have
01:51:21between 6065 hundred babies born in New Brunswick every
01:51:25year
01:51:27and now, starting October 13th, all babies under 2 will be
01:51:31eligible to receive a free RSV immunization during their first
01:51:35RSV season. RSV, or respiratory syncytial virus,
01:51:38is commonly spread from the fall season to the early spring
01:51:43in Canada. Most people feel mild symptoms in the throat and
01:51:47lungs, but for some it can cause
01:51:49complications like pneumonia, sometimes leading to hospital
01:51:53stays. The risk is higher for older and immunocompromised
01:51:58patients and babies. It's one of the leading causes of
01:52:01respiratory illness in infants and can lead to emergency room
01:52:05visits, hospitalization and in some
01:52:07cases intensive care treatment. As a physician that's worked in
01:52:12our emergency room and seen case with RSV,
01:52:14I can tell you that if we can cut those back by significant
01:52:18amounts of volume in our emergency departments will go
01:52:22down. This is an investment of $3.8 million to protect
01:52:25newborns and infants from RSV. This is about
01:52:28making sure families have protection when and where they
01:52:32need it. The RSV adult vaccine has been free for certain
01:52:35seniors in New Brunswick since 2024. Since then,
01:52:38those over 60 living in long term care,
01:52:41certain other types of care, or those waiting for care can
01:52:44get immunized for free. And anyone over 75 years old and
01:52:48Indigenous adults over 60 can also get the shot for free.
01:52:52Infants who were deemed high risk could get certain RSV
01:52:55antibodies. The number of children we would have seen
01:52:58admitted to the hospital
01:53:00or who present in the ER with RSV symptoms,
01:53:03that number will be reduced by 80% because the vaccine will
01:53:07now prevent those cases from becoming serious or from those
01:53:12illnesses from from taking taking hold. RSV is a
01:53:15reportable disease in New Brunswick. According to recent
01:53:19public health data. RSV cases are considered low but were
01:53:24above average compared to the two last seasons. Babies born
01:53:28before the RSV season between April 1st
01:53:31in October 12th can now get immunized at public health
01:53:34clinics or through their primary care provider. And
01:53:37those who will be born later in October into March of next year
01:53:41during the RSV season will also be able to get the shot before
01:53:44their discharge from the hospital.
01:53:50The Chief Public Health Office says the flu and respiratory
01:53:52season has arrived early this year. On PEI. It normally comes
01:53:56later in the fall, but this year is different.
01:53:59It's the earliest that we've ever seen
01:54:02this number of cases. We've sometimes had sporadic cases,
01:54:05but certainly this number of cases
01:54:09last week and also so far this week. So it is an indication it
01:54:13is circulating. Morrison says there's already been a couple
01:54:16hospitalizations and an outbreak at a long term care
01:54:19facility. She says the flu season is different every year.
01:54:22Many other parts of the country are in the same position. She
01:54:26says one of the best ways to protect yourself is through the
01:54:30free vaccine, influenza vaccine. It's not a
01:54:32perfect vaccine. It won't protect everyone from getting
01:54:35influenza, but it does decrease your risk
01:54:38of being hospitalized. It decreases
01:54:40the length of time you're ill and it decreases your risk of
01:54:45complications like even heart attack, stroke,
01:54:48COPD exacerbations. Dr. Morrison says there are also
01:54:52vaccines available for COVID and RSV,
01:54:55especially for those who are at highest risk of complications.
01:55:00We encourage them to be vaccinated as well with COVID
01:55:04vaccine and and then the RSV vaccine,
01:55:07which was universal last year for those 75
01:55:10years of age and older and those 60 to 74 with certain
01:55:14risk factors, it's also available. In
01:55:16addition to getting vaccinated, Dr. Morrison says you can
01:55:20protect yourself and others by washing your hands and coughing
01:55:24into your sleeve. If you're sick,
01:55:26stay home. And if your child is unwell or has a fever,
01:55:30they shouldn't go to school. You can get the flu,
01:55:33COVID and RSV vaccine at public health nursing clinics across
01:55:37PEI and some family physicians, nurse practitioners,
01:55:41pharmacies are offering the flu and COVID vaccine.
