00:00:43of mineral development is asking us to be calm. While we try to be
00:00:47calm, tonight we go back and remind you of previous
00:00:50earth tremors experienced in Abuja, particularly at the
00:00:54mpape area
00:00:55of the buari areal council. Also tonight we discuss
00:00:58infrastructure development. in the nation's capital as addressed by
00:01:02the FCT minister in his monthly media chat. This

00:01:28Hello and welcome today. Abuja, I'm Kayla
00:01:32of Magwa. Let's begin with the presidency and keep you up to date on the
00:01:36of recent events
00:01:37of presidentubu have been up to in the past week. It's time for
00:01:40Abujarap. Speaking during the ceremony to honor the FCT
00:01:44administration for its environmental efforts, the first lady of
00:01:47Nigeria, Senator Olure
00:01:49of Mitinu has commended the minister
00:01:51of of the federal capital territory for transforming
00:01:55Abuja City Gate into a major recreational and environmental
00:01:59landmark. Senatorubu say she was
00:02:02of impressed by the transformation
00:02:03of the city gate, describing it as unbelievable. the
00:02:07honorable minister when i saw what he did with the city
00:02:10gate, my god, unbelievable,
00:02:14unbelievable, and i want to thank him, he's done very well,
00:02:18and he said because of that he's trying to
00:02:20of transform more, the the the um
00:02:24permanent secret, secretary for women, to said they are interested in the
00:02:27last challenge, i said that would be great and it will help clean
00:02:31our nation around. the presidential working group on the national
00:02:35policing bill has launched nation wide consultations aimed
00:02:39at establishing a robust legal and operational framework
00:02:43safeguard the effective implementation of state policing across the
00:02:47country. addressing state
00:02:49a house correspondents, the chief of staff to president bolatinu,
00:02:53mr.
00:02:54a feajabia, who is the chairman
00:02:55of the group, said the initiative aims to design a lawful
00:02:59professional and sustainable dual policing system that
00:03:03brings policing closer to the people while preserving national
00:03:07standards, national security and the rights of every
00:03:10Nigerian. This is monumental reform the
00:03:13of Nigerians have debated over for many years. The
00:03:17question before the country is how we transform our policing
00:03:22in architecture to become more
00:03:24of responsive to the realities of our communities. Thus our
00:03:27central task is now to design lot.
00:03:30full professional and sustainable federal and state policing
00:03:34system that places greater capability closer to the
00:03:37people while
00:03:40of presenting of national standards, national
00:03:42security and the rights of
00:03:46every Nigerian. Following the meeting between the federal
00:03:50government and the leadership
00:03:51of the Nigerian association of Resident Doctors Nerd
00:03:54convend to have the Association's planned strike, Nard
00:03:58President Dr. Suleiman expressed
00:04:01optimism, he noted that the issues in contention have been
00:04:05resolved in principle with clear timelines agreed upon for their
00:04:09implementation. Speaking during a high-level meeting convened by the chief
00:04:12of staff to the president Ferming
00:04:15Bajabi A Mila, which brought together key government stakeholders, including the
00:04:18ministers of labor, health and finance, as well as senior
00:04:22of treasury and budget officials. The NAT President noted that the plan
00:04:26strike could not be called off immediately, but explained. the
00:04:30latest commitments had moved the needle to very large
00:04:33extent, he added that these assurances would now be presented
00:04:37to the national executive council which will determine the next
00:04:41of steps. this is not the first time the chief of staff has intervened in matters
00:04:45relating to
00:04:46of resident doctors in this country. about six, seven years
00:04:48ago when he became speaker, it was the first opportunity he had to intervene and he has
00:04:52always intervened. whenever he came
00:04:54of into our issues, our matters are solved, and today i can tell you our matters are
00:04:58solved, solved in. that timelines have been agreed
00:05:02upon by various agencies of government on salary and promotion areas
00:05:05we are talking about a week on the call mill issue in luth we're talking about a
00:05:09week so that we get implementation we have agreed a few
00:05:12We have agreed on
00:05:13numbers.
00:05:18Welcome back. In our focus on the FCT this week, we
00:05:22examined the history of earth tremors in Abuja. As the Nigeria
00:05:26Geological Survey Agency gives us details of
00:05:30yet another earth tremor in the nation's capital. And the minister of
00:05:34solid mineral development urges us to remain
00:05:36calm.
00:05:42The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency has released an alert
00:05:46stating that earth tremors shook several buildings on
00:05:50Tuesday August the 4th, 2026.
00:05:53According to the report, the NGSA stated that it recorded the
00:05:57earth tremor at approximately
00:05:5911:23:27 am, noting that it
00:06:03originated from a 1 kmter debt and spreading across
00:06:07a distance of 4 kilometers in 5 seconds.
00:06:11Although Nigeria... is not located a major tectonic plate
00:06:15boundary and is generally regarded as having low
00:06:18seismic activity. isolated earth tremers have been
00:06:22recorded in parts the country over the years, including in Abuja,
00:06:26kaduna, kogi, or your and belsa
00:06:29states. since the year 2000, Nigeria has
00:06:33experienced a handful of documented earth tremor
00:06:37episodes. most have been low magnitude interplay tremors
00:06:41rather than destructive earthquake. In August the year
00:06:452000, earth tremor in Jushi Kwary area the
00:06:48FCT was one the first documented earth tremors in the nation's
00:06:52capital. In September of 2018, the earth
00:06:56tremor which occurred in Mbape, Maitama, Katanke,
00:06:59Buari and surrounding areas is one the most significant in the history
00:07:03the nation's capital. In September of 2024,
00:07:07another earth tremor happened at Pape, Katanke
00:07:11and adjoining community.
00:07:15Back in September of 2024,
00:07:18we went to Papi, a densely populated area within the Bowari areal
00:07:22council to see for ourselves what was happening with these earth
00:07:25tremers. The tremor which
00:07:29began few days before had raised concerns among residents the
00:07:32area.
00:07:36This one around, just a small, this is
00:07:40not be like before. and that time we
00:07:43happen towards that the call the government's
00:07:46attention and the government enter
00:07:49here to do the necessary thing which they supposed to
00:07:53do and you watch that time
00:07:55the thing stop still now this thing happen again and the same
00:07:59thing nony crack crack for any building
00:08:03nothing happen just shaking the
00:08:06gr let then take action for it
00:08:10because from there we can know what is going
00:08:14on, though the community
00:08:18borders one of Abuja's high brow areas, may Tama, the
00:08:21area is popular for licensed quy activities, especially in the
00:08:25interior parts the community, however at this time the
00:08:29residents believed there was no link between the query activities and the
00:08:33earth movement, from 1:00 to 2,
00:08:36i'm very very scared because was inside but i have to
00:08:40come out outside. to look what is happening,
00:08:44but i see all the mountain, there's nothing like shaking and then
00:08:48maybe in one hour or one hour 30 minutes
00:08:52you still shake again, even here you day, shake
00:08:55everywhere, it is very serious something, make
00:08:58government make government do into do something
00:09:02about it, even people they hear it, they think
00:09:05other blastin, because you know all this area no
00:09:09blasting places, so even person here it... go think or
00:09:13the blasting before me myself, i think
00:09:15it's other than blasting people. this tremor in 2024 did
00:09:19not record any disruptions in the community, though the people asked the
00:09:23authorities to address the issue. this is however, not the
00:09:26first time that there will be earth tremers in pape
00:09:29district. this was pape in
00:09:322018. at the time, the residents the area also
00:09:36complained of earth tremors, but at that time they blamed the
00:09:40tremors on the incessant blasting. the queries in the
00:09:43area, almost four times i had
00:09:47it, i thought that maybe the house collapsed behind my
00:09:50building, i quickly ran inside, but at the end the
00:09:54day didn't see anything, when i heard
00:09:57the sound, i was the whole room was shaking, as in the building was
00:10:01shaking, i still wanted to collapse, so i quickly
00:10:04stood up and went outside, when i when i got outside, i
00:10:08saw i thought i would see my neighbors around, but nobody came out all of
00:10:12sudden we started hearing boom and it didn't sound like
00:10:16a blast, but when you hear boom, the
00:10:20next thing is ground will be shaking and it will
00:10:24shake that it. to shake your leg, you want why do 6x o'clock
00:10:27in the morning today is worse, even your interest, if you did that our
00:10:31side, you are interested
00:10:33with the ship. at the time, the director general the Nigerian
00:10:36geological survey agency said there was no need to panic
00:10:40because Nigeria doesn't belong to the plate boundaries and is not prone
00:10:44earthquakes. he did note, however that Pape is
00:10:48predisposed to interplate tectonics, citing a
00:10:51fracture from Pape to Kui in Kadun State, had
00:10:55experienced earth tremor in 2016. the fact that
00:10:59we experience it at mpape does not necessarily mean that the
00:11:02origin is at mpape, it may have been
00:11:06triggered elsewhere, but because the relative weakness around
00:11:10mpape, that's why we are feeling it around
00:11:14that area. the present administration has done so much
00:11:18in terms of assisting the agency in its mandate of generating
00:11:22geoscience data. so recently we're acquired
00:11:25some six sets of
00:11:29uh seismic monitoring or earthquake monitoring equipment,
00:11:33we are presently in the process of deploying
00:11:37them in different zones the
00:11:41country determined by the geology of course in kaduna, in
00:11:45abuja, in yola, in
00:11:48bad, calabar and
00:11:51alka, so definitely by the time these equipments are
00:11:55deployed, it will give us a quick information as
00:11:59to where probably you could have uh this kind of event
00:12:03so that you want people beforehand even before it
00:12:06occurs, so we feel that in the next one month or so
00:12:10we will have uh deployed all these sismic
00:12:14equipments and to be to to
00:12:16enhance the safety of uh
00:12:20citizens of
00:12:22Nigeria.
00:12:26In 2018 we made our way on motorbikes to the queries accused of carrying out
00:12:30blasts that the residents at the time blamed for the
00:12:33tremors.
00:12:37At the time this query had been functioning in Pape for 20 years
00:12:40and the managers in 2018 expressed
00:12:44worry over the encroachment of buildings to the site.
00:12:48The site engineer at the time took us through the process of blasting and said there
00:12:52was no correlation between blasting. activities and the earth
00:12:56tremos experienced in the area, plasting we
00:13:00supposed to be very cautious, okay, we control this
00:13:03process very well, before we started
00:13:06plasting, we send to our
00:13:10neighbors, we have another company here, they are never for us,
00:13:14we inform them that we will plast by each by which
00:13:18time, and also the pomp police
00:13:22and the police, they help us to block, this route
00:13:26and also to confirm is that we evacuate all the villagers or
00:13:30anyone inside the farms close to us here, after that
00:13:34we they give us the feedback that everything is okay, you can go
00:13:38ahead and plast, after that we do the
00:13:39plasting.
00:13:47a statement issued by the office the minister of state for mines and steel in
00:13:512018, all blasting activities had been suspended in pap.
00:13:55until the Nigeria Geological Survey Agency concluded its
00:13:59investigation to establish the trigger the earth tremor and
00:14:02assures the safety of lives and property the general
00:14:05public. In 2024,
00:14:09residents were told not to panic as they experienced another series of earth
00:14:13tremors in the same area. A statement issued in 2024 by
00:14:17the minister of solid minerals, Mr. Deli Alake read
00:14:20quote, over the past few days our monitoring station at Katanke
00:14:24has recorded several ground motions with increase in
00:14:27intensity and frequency from September 13 to the
00:14:3116th. The tremors are caused by accumulated stress along
00:14:34identified faults and have multiple epicenters, mainly
00:14:38around Pape and Katankwe. Their intensity ranges from weak to
00:14:42light, posing a very low threat. I advise residents not
00:14:46to panic as these tremors are low in intensity. We are
00:14:50actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates as
00:14:54needed. Our NGSA seismic stations are also being
00:14:57monitored in real time for prompt alerts any major
00:15:01events, and quote. Fast forward to
00:15:042026, the same minister of solid minerals development,
00:15:08Mr. Adi Alake is again urging residence the federal capital
00:15:12territory to remain calm following the August 4th,
00:15:152026 earth tremor that shook several buildings in
00:15:19some parts the nation's capital. In a statement by his special assistant on
00:15:22media, the minister is urging resident. in the territory to go about their
00:15:26daily activities without fear assuring them that proactive
00:15:30measures have been deployed to ensure the safety of lives and
00:15:33properties. further more, the ministers directed the Nigerian Geological
00:15:37the agency to provide hourly updates to him for
00:15:41regular review and possible escalation to other relevant
00:15:45agencies if the need arises. Africa is
00:15:48rising and we are rising with
00:15:52her. Every day there's a new story, new
00:15:55challenge, new discovery and new
00:15:58victory. For 30 minutes,
00:16:02Monday through Friday, we bring these to you from
00:16:06Abuja. to Acra and from Nairobi to
00:16:10Adis, Network Africa connects the dots
00:16:14giving you a full picture and bringing the continent closer to
00:16:17you, Network, Africa, weekdays at 4:30
00:16:21p.m. only on channels
00:16:23television,
00:16:35away from earth tremers. Earlier this week, the FCT
00:16:39Minister held his monthly media chat. Infrastructure development
00:16:43took up the bulk the conversation, as many suburbs in the nation's
00:16:47capital are calling for his intervention. Citizens are hoping that
00:16:51he'll stretch his infrastructure drive to all nooks and
00:16:54crenies the nation's capital. The minister also responded to some
00:16:58outstanding issues Abuja residents have been seeking answers
00:17:02too.
00:17:37cars where you
00:17:39come
00:17:47there and look what
00:17:48we are going to do
00:17:51that but let's see what we
00:17:55can have the
00:17:59designed thre major
00:18:02companies to give us defend that will be able
00:18:06to... choose one
00:18:09uh if for able to achieve that that takes care of
00:18:13those within the life uh life camp
00:18:17by putting those sporting activities there too
00:18:20and even keep the restaurant there and you seeing
00:18:24that it gives the city different
00:18:28look that what is supposed to to be you go to
00:18:31city you know say attractive you just in
00:18:35fact the... this pack don't
00:18:39pack
00:18:40it's empty totally empty
00:18:44that i was never
00:18:46one
00:18:52just
00:18:53so that make
00:18:57people not to stay in the sitting
00:19:01so we that she
00:19:03has a challenge just and that is
00:19:07shoets
00:19:15yeah,
00:19:20and then
00:19:23you now the water, that
00:19:25was
00:19:27- what i
00:19:31put from water, and so for me there are two key
00:19:35projects that to heart that
00:19:38particular example the water to
00:19:42the poor people to
00:19:44have access to water
00:19:46center
00:19:51touch society that you will have to look i am
00:19:55happy if
00:19:56you see the comments on the
00:20:00get
00:20:04the
00:20:04kind of thing that we will want to every time
00:20:07television
00:20:11this thing can be put in the place, this is not not
00:20:15the science is something that
00:20:17you are committed to then you will do it and we have
00:20:21done it, so the happiness on youth for me is
00:20:25key, it's key and that
00:20:28the access water in the areas, it's
00:20:31key, but is important yes, but are
00:20:34the two key projects are that's Uh, I'm very
00:20:38happy, okay, very happy will ask the next question, but quickly on the issue
00:20:42of water, I don't know whether it's come to attention that there is scarity of
00:20:46water and residence of areas like we say.
00:22:20Yeah, so it's the problem,
00:22:22so
00:22:26areas where
00:22:27we
00:22:34do not dance, but to be difficult for
00:22:37particularly,
00:22:38it is necessary within the city, not
00:22:42allows,
00:22:45and so they are walking that
00:22:48out,
00:22:58and each time we take them out they come again each
00:23:02time you take them out they come in again and oh one
00:23:05of staying how will we
00:23:09to be doing that it miss you encouraging people to leave
00:23:13from koki you are going to live from nasawa you are
00:23:17going to live
00:23:18from naja you are going to
00:25:20we don't have anything to do
00:25:23with, there's one company called
00:25:27jonathan
00:25:27something,
00:25:34we are not aware, that they want not
00:25:38to do it, they want to seek
00:25:41-
00:25:43they had problems and my
00:25:46problem.
00:28:02your questions and being a part the program this week, remember to let
00:28:06us know the happenings in your neighborhood using the social media handles showing right
00:28:10now on your screens. thank you so much for watching, i'm Kaylaame.
00:28:14see you next
00:28:14time.
