00:00:35of me of
00:00:41Good morning and welcome to Sunrise, it's
00:00:45a
00:00:46of bright and cheery morning, is it raining on your side of
00:00:49town? It's not raining here yet, mhm uh, but it's
00:00:53looking very bright and beautiful, um, I would say
00:00:57we survived this week, this work week. "we
00:01:00survived it
00:01:02of um, particularly because if you walk around
00:01:06kara or you have any, you had anything to do, maybe
00:01:10you are leaving lagos or you, and
00:01:13even people that are not walking around here or living around here, they
00:01:17saw the same thing that we
00:01:18of saw, but we survived and we're happy to be here, the fact
00:01:22that you even use the word survive say, when i
00:01:26say, i am sure that people that experienced it will know what i'm saying." you now i saw a
00:01:30film i think very when i was much younger the title
00:01:34of the film was the greatest american traffic
00:01:37in jam that traffic jam well it was acted but i don't know
00:01:41what it did there was no
00:01:42of ai then
00:01:43of so whichever way they did
00:01:45of that of thing you mean it
00:01:48a was the greatest american traffic j it had many roads
00:01:52many layers of bridges that were affected they had concert they
00:01:55had all kinds of things so this traffic of this week reminded me of that.
00:02:00then it also reminded me of something that happened to me, this one is not them, it's
00:02:04me, i left lagos
00:02:08in the morning of a particular saturday to host
00:02:12of event in ibado, think i left around say 9:10
00:02:15a.m. drove, before i got to ibadon was around 4
00:02:19p.m.
00:02:20of i got to ibadon of course the event i went to host was
00:02:24already over so left ibadon at about
00:02:27of 5 p.m. guess what time i got home? into my bedroom tell me
00:02:315
00:02:33in a.m. wow so um 5 pm to 5 am ibadon
00:02:37and lagos took me 12 hours so the one that
00:02:40happened you know this week when people were saying it was it
00:02:44was asking
00:02:45in b tell me tell me about it people were saying because you didn't experience it
00:02:49who told you didn't experience it okay why are you not saying people were
00:02:52of saying because if you were in the thick of things
00:02:54of you will know that people were not saying we okay you
00:02:58know um uh from magodo face 2 shangisha
00:03:01between Alausa and magodo face 2
00:03:04in shangisha i
00:03:04of spent 4 hours so tell me de experience four hours what about people that spend 12
00:03:08hours their house is farther than mine me it was it was
00:03:12something that was horrible please we do not want to experience such was very
00:03:16horrible but what is the root
00:03:19of okay so let's
00:03:21okay this will
00:03:27of of be fun so yes there is the repair going on - and
00:03:30then there is the human
00:03:32factor, which one took the cake on this event?
00:03:36so there was a accident that compounded it, and
00:03:40then there was the issue about people
00:03:44not having patience, patience was
00:03:48lacking, everyone wanted to get to where they
00:03:52wanted to get to without you know some
00:03:55of them not having
00:03:57of consideration for others, and so you find you, uh oncoming
00:04:00traffic, this way, you know, inbound, facing
00:04:04outbound, and that was how
00:04:07of everything was locked up, but thankfully yesterday,
00:04:11this morning, let me, let me, let me, let me back up a little
00:04:14yummy, the first day the traffic was going to begin
00:04:17was Tuesday, I came to the office absolutely, of course they hadn't
00:04:21started, so no incident whatsoever, by the time I was going back
00:04:25home, still in the morning, the traffic had backed
00:04:28off significantly. Wednesday morning, the traffic was
00:04:32thick, you
00:04:33know, tilled back as far as secretariat towards the toe
00:04:37gate, Thursday, it finned
00:04:40down significantly, so much so that, and there was no
00:04:44traffic between about last week, last week, okay, when it
00:04:48started, yes, so there was no
00:04:50of traffic
00:04:50in between um, berja and the karab, no
00:04:54traffic whatsoever, yeah, Friday,
00:04:58of absolutely nothing, zero. thatic that's in the
00:05:01afternoon because in the evening there was i'm sure you were at
00:05:05home in the morning there was nothing even when i was going back home there was
00:05:09nothing on saturday morning zilch not thing
00:05:13last week saturday
00:05:13yes okay when you were coming
00:05:17but then I got there on on Monday morning still
00:05:21nothing then Tuesday it was as if all hell was let loose
00:05:25what's going on here there there was a there was that accident there's no doubt about
00:05:29it it thind the road from like maybe one uh two one and a half
00:05:32lanes to just one lane sourse you everyone had to be i
00:05:36know that one so there was a truck that caused that
00:05:39one they moved that one when i was at about
00:05:4310:00 a.m.
00:05:45that the that traffic that truck was being moved out the
00:05:48way while that was going on maybe after that one was done
00:05:52another traffic another accident happened on the same bridge on the same day and
00:05:56then while they were trying to deal with that one closing one side the road some people were
00:06:00backing up around you toward inbound lagos they squeeed
00:06:04if you listen to the it's just it's just us if you
00:06:07listen to the i think the sector commander in lagos
00:06:11you could feel the the pain in his voice, he was
00:06:15saying, this is self-inflicted, absolutely, this is
00:06:18self-inflicted, because well, I'm I'm
00:06:22glad that we survived it, and we are hoping we don't have to go
00:06:26through it again, particularly so that we are not, yes, you know,
00:06:30rehabilitation the road will happen
00:06:32you know every now and then, the point that you are making your me,
00:06:36which is valid, it didn't have to get to that level, it didn't
00:06:39have to get that far, but we are. having
00:06:43emergencies to attendcies, childbirth and all those
00:06:46things, so many things that could have gone wrong, thankfully we didn't hear
00:06:50any of such fatalities, we give God thanks for that one, so
00:06:54um the the message and I love the fact that there was someone who was able
00:06:58to help us capture it went out and
00:07:01said this one we have yes we have quite a
00:07:04number of videos area shots by
00:07:07ch
00:07:09this one is us so let's not let's not
00:07:13when we are calling government out, call government out properly, okay, we
00:07:16are glad and we are happy that you are here with us
00:07:20and this morning um is the right place to be,
00:07:24we have you covered,
00:07:48about some money that we now have in the states, yeah, every other
00:07:52time you know the fact we share the money between the states and the
00:07:55federal government, i think about two point something
00:07:58trillion
00:08:00for trillion for uh august or so,
00:08:02you know, and you know what came to my mind
00:08:05was we are looking at the federal
00:08:08government, state governors, state governments please,
00:08:13this monies, let us use them for the
00:08:17benefit the people. I saw something, every time it happens, every time
00:08:20we share the money, we hear that, oh,
00:08:23you know, the allocation has increased because there's no subsidy
00:08:27again, people want to feel, this
00:08:30moneys in different ways and the hospitals, we're
00:08:34talking about roads now, you know, roads and all the things that
00:08:38will make life easy for the people, i think there is fact that we need
00:08:42to to highlight so that when you are calling out
00:08:46government, you call out um government
00:08:48purposefully, somebody shared an information last
00:08:52week and he corrected himself along the line that he heard that
00:08:56um the federal government now get less than states
00:09:00that as at that time the federal government is now the state
00:09:03governments are now getting about 52% of any fac that goes
00:09:07out that means they are getting more than one trillion so all the states share more
00:09:11than 1 trillion. now that's that's quite something and that's
00:09:15not to talk about local government because local governments also get their own
00:09:18allocation different from the states and the federal government so you
00:09:22can i imagine how much really
00:09:24it is going to the states because whatever goes to the local governments is
00:09:28also invariably going to the states so when we are asking questions
00:09:32let us be very careful and very very deliberate and specific
00:09:35about the questions that we are asking just so you know that this is september
00:09:39right um august the august allocation was
00:09:432.338
00:09:45trillion naira, so it should be more than
00:09:49enough to do whatever it is, and that's not to to, that that doesn't
00:09:53include the 13% derivation that goes to um
00:09:57oil producing states in the country as well, just we just wanted you to
00:10:01know that that has happened and if you're going to ask questions please ask the
00:10:13and it's a weekend, we are relaxed, but I'm sure you
00:10:17know about the for price and a whole lot of issues
00:10:21around it, so it's not just about Nigeria, it's you know...
00:10:25global oil price you know gone up and but the people don't
00:10:28understand most of this you know people
00:10:32who are
00:10:33you know down the ladder they don't understand
00:10:36who or what is happening and why the all they know is that it
00:10:40is biting if you buy a liter of we for about
00:10:441,400 a whole lot of things the
00:10:48ripple effect from you know
00:10:51transportation to food because the person by
00:10:55selling the food would tell you, it took a lot more
00:10:59to get this money here, so whichever way government
00:11:03can help you to alleviate this, and for
00:11:06people too, yes, because this increase has come, but we had you
00:11:10know uh f prices going down sometime you know
00:11:14ago and nothing seemed to change for people that are
00:11:18selling things or transportation, it goes to that
00:11:29Nigerians abroad,
00:11:30you know, in the UK, in the US, they also talking about the fact that
00:11:34uh, things are quite expensive, particularly fuel, it's very, in fact energy
00:11:38generally very, very costly there, the straight of moose
00:11:41issues, very, very straight right now,
00:11:45so um, so I saw a video of someone in the UK
00:11:49complaining that it's almost two two pounds to get a
00:11:52gallon of of fuel in'. their own country
00:11:56in that country where they they live so and then there are those who are also talking
00:11:59about the fact that in Niger it's costlier much
00:12:03costlier than
00:12:04it is in Nigeria so if it that is if it's any comfort but our
00:12:08reality is tell you we have refinery at least dangoter
00:12:11refinery now imagine that we didn't have refinery and you know we have crude oil so now
00:12:15imagine
00:12:16that we didn't have refinery benefit from it okay well at least one thing is sure
00:12:19our menu is uh is not
00:12:23disturbed talking about menu, that's the first one we're
00:12:27dealing with this morning, the fight uh for
00:12:30opposition, unity, that is the first
00:12:34conversation about the 2027 election, yes,
00:12:38and then can Mambia finally power
00:12:41Nigeria, especially after that victory, yay,
00:12:44that's that's wel be, we'll be, you're looking for answers to
00:12:48that, then King's College, I mean you've heard about Unity schools
00:12:52and all the drama that's been going on. but we'll find out
00:12:56more about that when we talk about funding kings college going forward and
00:15:11there is anything that makes the opposition thrive or democracy
00:15:15thrive any country that practices democracy,
00:15:18opposition politics is definitely one of those things, yes
00:15:22and but the question that the number of people have asked over
00:15:25time is whether opposition politics is about just
00:15:29getting power or providing alternatives, that question has been
00:15:33and the quality of alternatives and the that's the that's the that's the...
00:15:37the the most important thing there, which is why some people toast the
00:15:41UK
00:15:42style, you do your
00:15:45exam, you take your research right there in
00:15:48parliament, so Nigeria's primary opposition
00:15:51parties are actively maneuvering to challenge
00:15:55the uh governing APC ahead the 2027 general
00:15:59elections, well there are 22 registered
00:16:02political parties recognized by INEC, the
00:16:06major opposition. parties are currently attempting to unite and form
00:16:10a formidable alliance, that's and
00:16:14number of other issues we are raising this morning with the panel of three, we have
00:16:17professor vincent and is director general
00:16:21international institute for national transformation, he joins
00:16:25us virtually, Samuel is a
00:16:29Saudi spokesperson for obedient movement, he is with us
00:16:33in our Abuja studio, also be having uh
00:16:36Mr. Antony who is a chieftin the
00:16:40APC,
00:16:41also will be joining us virtually. Thank you gentlemen for joining us this
00:16:43morning. Let me begin with you, um,
00:16:47prof, um, um, this
00:16:51whole conversation about opposition politics, I don't
00:16:55know, from, maybe you want to give us, should I
00:16:59say, uh, a drone shot view,
00:17:14prof, let me let me begin with you and ask this question, give
00:17:18us, should I sell eagle eye or drone shot view of
00:17:22your rating of opposition politics, particularly in this republic,
00:17:25just
00:17:26so to give us an background, because there are those who would say
00:17:29that opposition politics in previous republics have been
00:17:33quite active, but in this republic it seems that it's a bit
00:17:36different.
00:17:58at the list published by
00:18:00inec, there are 18
00:18:03candidates, presidential candidates and also
00:18:07between vice presidential candidates
00:18:11and from what
00:18:13I
00:18:15saw uh, I think there's only one woman presidential
00:18:19candidate and four vice presidential
00:18:22candidates that
00:18:24are women, I looked at the age
00:18:26disparity, I saw that the oldest
00:18:30oldest candidate is atiku abubakar
00:18:33age of 79, and I saw one as young
00:18:37as 35, which is good, which is okay.
00:18:41the biggest concern i really have when i think
00:18:45about these candidates, question that
00:18:48comes to mind is, number one, do
00:18:52they really have the
00:18:55experience? number two, do
00:18:58they have the character, the
00:19:01competence, a
00:19:04well trained team?
00:19:08the program that they will execute
00:19:12within their first 100 days in
00:19:15office, are they really really
00:19:18prepared or is this
00:19:21another year of
00:19:23sloganism uh, just talking, that's
00:19:27really where I have the concern, the depth,
00:19:31the preparedness, even the understanding the
00:19:35complexity of issues, that are facing this
00:19:39nation, that is for me what needs to
00:19:42be really interrogated,
00:19:46and that's where i would like this discussion also to
00:19:50examine.
00:19:52the question, because the question that comes to my mind about
00:19:56that prof, is are you saying that the opposition is
00:20:00not ready or
00:20:04the opposition does not have the quality?
00:20:09that Nigeria needs now, because it sounds
00:20:11to me like you're questioning the quality of people in the
00:20:13opposition, actually I'm
00:20:17questioning everybody, every candidate, because even
00:20:21the incumbent, yes they have done well in
00:20:25certain areas, but there are other areas they
00:20:29have to really convince the
00:20:32Nigerian citizens that they have the competency, the
00:20:36organization to address. so that
00:20:39concern is actually across the board, whoever
00:20:43is coming in, are you, the Nigerian situation is
00:20:47becoming more and more complex. number two,
00:20:51the future we are entering is becoming
00:20:54more complex, more competitive,
00:20:58nation that will survive the next 10 to
00:21:0115 years must be totally
00:21:04independent, can no longer rely
00:21:08on other nations to feed them, to
00:21:12to send them drugs, so I'm talking about preparedness for
00:21:16the future, and I am asking that question. respect
00:21:20to everybody, what we're doing today is not
00:21:24enough, and we're putting the lives of our
00:21:27children in danger by defaring that
00:21:31problem to them, and yet we are not even preparing
00:21:35them to solve that problem, so my concern is
00:21:38serious, is very deep and is across the
00:21:41board. all right, prof, thank you so much for that, let
00:21:45me come to, mr.
00:21:47in abuja studio, well um, "you may
00:21:51not be speaking for a political party, but at least you you, you
00:21:54understand this whole opposition politics
00:21:58game. what are your thoughts first of all on what prof said,
00:22:02because he's not the only one who is asking questions about the
00:22:06quality of people in the
00:22:07opposition?
00:22:23heard all that um that the prof
00:22:25said, and um, when
00:22:29you ask the quality the
00:22:33the opposition, I think you're
00:22:37trying to make the point
00:22:40that if we must have healthy
00:22:43opposition, that we must have
00:22:46people in that opposition,
00:22:50who are are responsive and
00:22:53responsible and people who have programs
00:22:56and alternatives to what is it that
00:23:00they want to change, but most
00:23:04times the problem is not even just the
00:23:07opposition, the problem is more
00:23:10the recruitment system,
00:23:14because it is the recruitment system that determines the kind of
00:23:17opposition that we have. because the process in which
00:23:21people come into power a matters lot
00:23:24if we have a system that does not
00:23:27allow you know good people that does not
00:23:31allow genuine people that does not allow you know capable
00:23:35people that make it even difficult in or for us
00:23:39to have kind of multip party them
00:23:41a level playing ground for everybody then in most cases
00:23:45it's
00:23:45now become difficult for you to get the kind
00:23:49of... quality opposition or the kind of
00:23:52participants that you want a democracy, so if we
00:23:56actually want to get a very robust opposition,
00:24:00gets in quality nigerians you know to come and
00:24:04participate in election and in our democracy, we must first of all
00:24:08you begin to think what kind of
00:24:11system do we have, how do people come into office? the
00:24:15recruitment system is actually as important as the
00:24:18people that will have. that is leading us, so it's not just about the
00:24:22opposition, it's also about you, the incuben, the people
00:24:26that we have as leaders today, how do they get into that into that
00:24:29position, and how much have they delivered in the
00:24:33promises you know that made them get into that position, and
00:24:37again to the Nigerian people, if we don't have a hand, if the
00:24:41Nigerian people don't have a hand in the selection
00:24:44process, if we don't have a hand in electing our leaders
00:24:48or if we feel that... vote doesn't count, we don't
00:24:52have a stake on it, then it becomes a problem, because people get into
00:24:55office, they are not even afraid the next election to say that if they don't
00:24:59deliver on the promises, it means in the next election they will be voted out, so
00:25:03that what people get into office whether they kill themselves into office or they fight themselves
00:25:07through in office, you they become sititights in leaders and
00:25:11they don't care about the people again and they don't care about delivering the promises,
00:25:15because the only thing that could make our leaders to deliver on the
00:25:18promises, mr. just
00:25:19one second, so are you saying then that the unity
00:25:23or lack of unity of opposition
00:25:26parties is a responsibility is
00:25:30caused by the the ruling government is that what you're
00:25:33saying yeah i say you know
00:25:37when we talk about unity when we talk about unity
00:25:40it it means so it means so much because like in the context in
00:25:44which we are discussing it today we are saying that because the
00:25:48incubent is so powerful and because he control all instrument of government, he
00:25:52control, he control everybody, and therefore for the oppositions to be able to
00:25:56sit them that they have to come together, perhaps collapse their structures and become and
00:25:59it's not healthy for a multi-party democracy, should that should not be the
00:26:03discussion, there should be a multi-party democracy that
00:26:07every political party and should run on should run
00:26:10on their on on on their manifesto and their plans
00:26:14and whatever program they have, they should run on that, and
00:26:18Nigeria is too big enough to have a multi-party system where
00:26:22all these candidates even if they are 10, like they
00:26:24are 10 very responsive and powerful candidates, they are Nigeria is too big
00:26:28enough and enough voters for them to go conv for voters
00:26:31and voted for at end the day one will image, but the reason why
00:26:35we now have this idea of, oh let all them come together, and
00:26:39that is
00:26:40the what we are, we don't want to discuss the main issue, it's like we are leaving the breast to suck
00:26:44the hits, the reason why opposition is not fighting to come together is
00:26:48because we have a system, we have a political system that the incubent
00:26:52has caked everybody, he controls inec, he controls everybody
00:26:56and in in there's a lot of intimidation in our
00:26:59process and therefore the opposition is... thinking
00:27:02how are they going to come together to match them perhaps in monetary aspect to match them perhaps
00:27:06in violence to match them in everything that incubate and even most time it's not easy
00:27:10even do that so we should begin to think about our recruitment process we
00:27:14should begin to think about our electoral system we should begin to think on how to
00:27:18unboding this whole process that makes it very difficult for
00:27:22people to participate in our democracy because if we don't have
00:27:25this if we don't have these
00:27:29difficulties if we don't have this incumberment we cannot be talking about 'oh
00:27:33let be collapse their structure, let everybody you come and collapse their
00:27:37structure and be one party, it's not healthy, it's not healthy any
00:27:40democracy. Nigerian should have options in every election
00:27:43circle, have options to choose any candidate their choice, to choose any
00:27:47political party their choice that have program, and these political parties should be
00:27:51free to converse, to go about their ways canvassing for
00:27:55vote and talking to Nigerias, the highest coalition and that a
00:27:58political party should have should be the Nigerian people and not collapsing'. political
00:28:02structures, mr. will come back to you, let me quickly go to mr
00:28:06tun, um, you've heard what the prof said
00:28:10and what mk said, um, in terms
00:28:14the muscling from from what he is
00:28:17saying, it will seem a say you, opposition in Nigeria is
00:28:21being muscled by the
00:28:25administration or by the government in power, um, what you
00:28:29have to say in terms the level playing field?
00:28:32that should be when it comes to election and politicing
00:28:36in good morning,
00:28:37Nigeria. good morning
00:28:41Well, Nigeria. You see, we don't have to get emotions about things to be
00:28:44sincere. What the man is saying there, they are far
00:28:48from the way things are, the opposition have
00:28:51been very, very unwildy, and they are coming
00:28:55together, is not even the best interest
00:28:58in coming together to take over power.
00:29:02there must be sacrifices, without that,
00:29:06excuse me, when APC was coming together
00:29:10right, about 16 years ago there about,
00:29:13right, we made
00:29:17and people were able to stick to the
00:29:20outcome the arrangement, we had about four
00:29:24candidates for presidency in
00:29:272014, was one
00:29:30them,
00:29:42from from the north right, so and after the
00:29:45election people were expecting people will
00:29:49leave for personal interest, but people stook together
00:29:53believing that this country at that time was at the critical
00:29:56position and they must come out and do something and they
00:30:00did, and here we are today. and oppositions
00:30:03that we used to be are not screaming that they are being
00:30:07muzzle, we face the goverment in power and we
00:30:11won, we defeed jonathan and he
00:30:14agreed it
00:30:15was fair and fair election and he accepted without going to
00:30:18cause any kind of ranker so when people talk
00:30:22like this monetary policy monetize
00:30:25violence no no
00:30:28no way understand me people if you are
00:30:30ready an
00:30:33opposition and you ready to come back
00:30:36together to take power
00:30:38to understand me? hey, you must be able to make
00:30:42sacrifices. even in the UK,
00:30:45before they power, three times
00:30:48story - democrats,
00:30:52but end
00:30:52the the day it got to point where liber said we are going to walk
00:30:56away, was very minor party.
