00:10:34is based on our assessment that the reforms initiated since
00:10:372023 require continuity and sufficient
00:10:41time for the institutional and economic benefits to
00:10:44match. while the endorsement of presidentubu by
00:10:48the northern university electorist arts to the growing political activities
00:10:52ahead the general election, these develop. government also raises further
00:10:56questions whether academics who have publicly endorsed a political
00:11:00candidate should participate in sensitive electoral duties during the

00:11:12daily necessity. however, with the cost of essential drugs rising
00:11:16sharply, staying on treatment has become
00:11:18increasing increasingly heavy financial
00:11:22burden. in this special report our correspondent. Victoria Long J
00:11:26looks at what patients are paying today compared to two years ago why
00:11:29prices continue to rise and whether the government's push for local
00:11:33pharmaceutical manufacturing can bring relief to those who
00:11:37depend on these lifesaving
00:11:39medicines.
00:11:43Every day the routine is familiar, packets
00:11:47of tablets, sometimes insulin, and for many patients,
00:11:51another calculation, how much will it cost to? the
00:11:55prescription. For people living with
00:11:59diabetes and hypertension, treatment does not end after one
00:12:02prescription. It continues month after month and
00:12:06so does the bill. I've been diagnosed with diabetes 15
00:12:10years ago, and since then I was buying the medforming
00:12:14drug from my pocket. The price the drug has been
00:12:18steadily rising. Now a month
00:12:21packet sells for over 70,000. A
00:12:25visit to some pharmacies found these ranges for both diabetes and
00:12:29hypertension medication, further illustrating the wider
00:12:32pressure and chronic disease
00:12:34medicines.
00:12:38These are not just numbers, the represents medicines that patients
00:12:42are expected to take consistently, often for years and
00:12:46sometimes for life.
00:12:50For someone managing both conditions, the monthly cost can
00:12:54quickly become substantial household
00:12:56expense,
00:13:00at the pharmacy the change is equally visible.
00:13:03pharmacists say the prices of several commonly prescribed
00:13:06medicines have since risen considerably over the past three
00:13:10years. most the drugs they are not produced
00:13:14locally here in Nigeria, most them are imported drugs
00:13:18and
00:13:20all those diabetic drugs and hypertensive drugs, they are drugs
00:13:24that will keep you. alive, that's why i think they
00:13:28are expensive and as prices climb, they say patients are
00:13:31changing how they buy, some ask for cheaper brands or
00:13:35buy only part of a prescription, while some others just simply walk
00:13:39away,ly pin, common medication,
00:13:43they prescribe pin, so this pin is 30,000
00:13:47for the par, so if they come and say that they don't have enough
00:13:51money for to get the amlod pin, we give them a cheaper brand,
00:13:55of this is 1,100 which they can afford after like
00:13:59a month or
00:13:59so they come back with high come back with
00:14:03injury if they are hypertensive patients and blood glucose patients
00:14:07diabetic patients for the patients missing
00:14:10adose may appear to solve immediate financial problem but
00:14:14medically the consequences can be far more
00:14:17serious when you take the drugs that are not sufficient or
00:14:21commencerate enough with your level of disease probably sugar.
00:14:25or blood pressure, you are not likely to achieve good
00:14:29control, and that means that you are going to be at higher risk
00:14:33of complications than somebody who probably has very good
00:14:36sugar or blood pressure control, and what that means is that if you save
00:14:40oneira or tuna today, tomorrow you may spend tens of thousands, hundreds
00:14:44of thousands of millions when this complications set in, with the rising
00:14:48cost of medication still digging a big hole in the pockets of
00:14:52patients, the federal government says this launch. series of
00:14:55aggressive multi-billionaire policy interventions
00:14:59designed to boost local drug
00:15:01production and at the center of this
00:15:05strategy is presidential initiative for unlocking the healthcare value
00:15:09chain. it says the government is working with manufacturers and
00:15:12investors to expand production capacity. due to the

00:15:51you in the economy but things are gradually picking up but in
00:15:54the pharmaceutical space we're seeing that more capital is being
00:15:57retained and manufactures are expanding utilizing more the
00:16:01capacities and once that is set that's where we
00:16:05begin to see more products available and prices, but that is
00:16:08already changing in certain instances, seen the manufacturers dropped
00:16:12in prices for particular commodities, significantly
00:16:16already, many of our members are building factories, many even
00:16:20those that are trading, those are
00:16:21important switching
00:16:25to go into manufacturing of this some these products that they
00:16:29bring into the country. the ambition the federal government is
00:16:32clear to produce more medicines in Nigeria, but
00:16:36production is only. part the equation, for the
00:16:39patients, success will ultimately be measured at the
00:16:43pharmacy counter. for Nigerians living with hypertension and
00:16:47diabetes and medication is not optional, but as government
00:16:51pushes local production, the expectation from patients is
00:16:54simple: make the medicines more available, make them
00:16:57affordable and make sure that no Nigerian has to choose between

00:29:22their donation they are going to change this narrative a very very grand
