00:06:29participating in this workshop and the management is hoping that the knowledge
00:06:33gained will enable the staff to deliver effectively on

00:07:50universities and other tertiary institutions across the northern

00:08:09door engagement in Kaduna. According to them. Their position
00:08:13is based on their assessment of available data as

00:08:26brings together senior lecturers and vice chancellors of
00:08:29state-owned universities and other treasury institutions
00:08:33across the 19 northern states to review the performances of President

00:08:48Nigeria. According to the vice chancellor of Karina State University, Professor
00:08:52Abdullah Musa, who read the group's communique after the

00:09:00in sectors including education, infrastructure,
00:09:03agriculture and investment before arriving at their
00:09:06position. The vice chancellor says the group also

00:10:15maintained that their position should not be interpreted as a blank
00:10:18check. following extensive deliberation, we
00:10:22resolve to express our support for
00:10:25is the election of

00:10:33based in on the 2027 presidential election. our
00:10:33our assessment position that the reforms initiated since 2023
00:10:37require continuity and sufficient time for the institutional
00:10:41and economic benefits to
00:10:44match. while the endorsement of presidentubu
00:10:47by the northern university electoris adds to the growing political
00:10:51activities ahead the general election. this development also
00:10:55raises further questions whether academics who have publicly endorsed a
00:10:59political candidate should participate in sensitive electoral duties
00:11:03during the
00:11:03election.
00:11:09for Nigerians leaving with diabetes and hypertension. medication is
00:11:13a daily necessity, however, with cost of essential
00:11:16drugs rising sharply, stain on treatment has become
00:11:20increasingly heavy financial burden. in this
00:11:24report, and Victoria Longjan looks at what patients are
00:11:28paying today compared to two years ago while prices continue
00:11:32to rise and whether the government push for local pharmaceutical
00:11:35manufacturing can bring relief to those who depend on

00:11:48every day the routine is familiar packets
00:11:52of tablets sometimes insulin. and for many patients,
00:11:56another calculation, how much will it cost to refill the
00:12:00prescription? for people living with
00:12:04diabetes and hypertension, treatment does not end after one
00:12:08prescription, it continues month after month and
00:12:12so does the bill. i've been diagnosed with diabetes 15
00:12:16years ago and since then i was buying the medforming
00:12:19drug from my pocket, the price the drug has been
00:12:23steadily rising, Now a month
00:12:27packet sells for over 70,000. A
00:12:31visit to some pharmacies found these ranges for both diabetes and
00:12:35hypertension medication, further illustrating the wider
00:12:38pressure on chronic disease
00:12:40medicines.
00:12:44These are not just numbers, they represent medicines that patients
00:12:48are expected to take consistently, often for years and
00:12:52sometimes for life.
00:12:56For someone managing both conditions, the monthly costts can quickly
00:13:00become a substantial household
00:13:02expense.
00:13:06At the pharmacy, the change is equally visible.
00:13:09Pharmacists say the prizes of several commonly prescribed medicines
00:13:13have since risen considerably over the past three years. Most
00:13:17the drugs they are not produced locally here in
00:13:21Nigeria, most them are imported drugs and
00:13:25and you know all those diabetic drugs and hypertensive
00:13:28drugs, they are drugs that will keep you
00:13:31alive, that's why i think they are expensive, and as
00:13:35prices climb, they say patients are changing how they
00:13:38buy, some ask for cheaper brands or buy only part of
00:13:42a prescription, while some others just simply walk away.
00:13:46doctors prescribe mainly pain, common medication, they
00:13:49prescribe pin, so this unl the pin is 30,000
00:13:53for the par, so if they come and said that they don't have enough
00:13:57money for to get the amlodi pin, we give them a cheaper brand of
00:14:01amlodi pin, this is 1,100 which they can afford after like
00:14:05a month or two they come back with high risks, come back with sollen
00:14:08leg, injury if they are hypertensive patients and
00:14:12blood glucose patient diabetic patients. for the patients,
00:14:16missing dose may appear to solve immediate financial
00:14:19problem, but medically the consequences can be far more
00:14:23serious. when you take the drugs that are not sufficient or
00:14:27commencerate enough with your level of disease, probably
00:14:30sugar or blood pressure, you are not likely to
00:14:34achieve good control, and that means that you are going to
00:14:37be at higher risk of complications than somebody who
00:14:41probably has very good sugar or blood pressure control, and what that
00:14:45means is that if you save oneira or two today, tomorrow you may spend
00:14:4810 of thousands, hundreds of thousands of millions when this
00:14:52complications set in, with the rising cost of medical... still digging a
00:14:56big hole in the pockets of patients, the federal government
00:15:00says it has launched a series of aggressive multi-billion nara
00:15:03policy interventions designed to boost local drug

00:15:11strategy is the presidential initiative for unlocking the healthcare value
00:15:15chain. it says the government is working with manufacturers and
00:15:18investors to expand production capacity. due to the

00:15:26and V80s for some the key inputs, we've seen
00:15:29utilization capacities their factories increase,
00:15:33seen expansion in production, what is
00:15:37ability? to service more the market, more Nigerian
00:15:40products in the market means lower prices in the long term, so in
00:15:44the last couple of years what we've seen is actually lot
00:15:48of capital you being retained
00:15:51in those factories, but also more jobs retained,
00:15:55lot of things have been lost in the economy, but things are gradually
00:15:59picking up, by and the pharmaceutical space we're seeing that more
00:16:03capital is being retained and manufactures are expanding utilizing
00:16:06more. capacities and once that is set, that's
00:16:10where we begin to see more products available and at lower prices, but that
00:16:14is already changing in certain instances, seen the manufacturers
00:16:18dropped you prices for particular commodities
00:16:22significantly already, many of our members are building factories, many
00:16:25even those that are trading those are
00:16:27important switching
00:16:31to go into manufacturing of this some these products that they
00:16:35bring into the country, the ambition "the federal government is
00:16:38clear to produce more medicines in Nigeria, but
00:16:42production is only one part the equation. for the
00:16:45patients, success will ultimately be measured at the
00:16:49pharmacy counter. for Nigerians living with hypertension and
00:16:53diabetes and medication is not optional, but as government
00:16:57pushes local production, the expectation from patients is
00:17:00simple, make the medicines more available, make them
00:17:04affordable and make sure that no Nigerian has choose." between

00:18:30down with the national automotive design and development
00:18:33council blaming the influx of cheaper substandard.
00:18:37imported alternatives for the set back. the director

00:18:45the concern while leading the council's governing board
00:18:49a tour of automotive assembly and manufacturing plants

00:23:02open to renewed trade negotiations with the United States if
00:23:05Washington offers accept acceptable terms. The

00:23:13EU began work on an alliance for the future covering areas
00:23:17including trade, defense, energy technology and critical
