00:00:00Besides, they are still easy pray for predators. According to the
00:00:03Galapagos conservancy, captive-bred tortices need to be between
00:00:07five and seven years old, for them to have fighting chance when released in
00:00:11the wild. But back on
00:00:14a Floriana, this pioneering group are all 12 to 14
00:00:17years old,
00:00:19of added maturity that will hopefully ensure their homecoming is
00:00:22success.
00:00:31With these 158 turtices, what we want is to
00:00:35determine which areas they will use for foraging and for
00:00:38migration, or for the ecological niches
00:00:42of of these species. Change won't happen overnights and more releases are planned in
00:00:46coming years, but if the classic fable teaches
00:00:49a us anything, you can bet on the taurtous. It'll take a long
00:00:53time to get back to the 10,00, 15,00 taurtises. They do grow
00:00:57slowly, but they're very steady and persistent, I mean the... touris in the hair,
00:01:01um, the taurtis does win the race, I think it is just beginning, and the
00:01:05island is going to get his taurtises back and start itself to
00:01:08replenish and
00:01:12in renew.

00:01:20This isn't your average jacket, it's one specifically
00:01:24designed to help you fall asleep, anytime and
00:01:27anywhere. so i'm going to try to take a
00:01:3110-minute nap in this chair and let you know how
00:01:35my sleep was. good night. the flashing red light inside
00:01:39the hood is meant to help me drift off while this ring tracks my
00:01:43heart rate and body temperature. if my pulse stays too
00:01:47high, the jacket plays a laby. so i don't think
00:01:51i slept, but i feel very refreshed and i actually feel a little bit
00:01:55more relaxed than did when i first put on this

00:02:42of tech, a market expected to

00:03:09improve your sleep because it can tell how much you're moving in your sleep,
00:03:13but do these products actually help or are they just expensive

00:03:44the nation is teaching them that

00:06:34This is Maco, around 700 thousand
00:06:38people live in this former Portuguese colony, an area.
00:06:42roughly 33 square kilometers, that's about 24
00:06:46times smaller than the size of New York
00:06:48City. long known as the Las Vegas of
00:06:52Asia, Macao, a special administrative region of China, has
00:06:56world-class casinos, hotels, shopping
00:06:59malls, and that's why people come
00:07:02here. In 2023, more than
00:07:0628 million visitors, around 40 times the local
00:07:09population arrived in Macao.
00:07:13GDP also rose over 80% the level in
00:07:162019, small, but
00:07:19mighty. Still, this former colony hasn't fully
00:07:23recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic either in visitors or
00:07:27the economy. That's why, nearly 25
00:07:31years after its handover from Portugal back to China,
00:07:35Macao is looking to diversify its econom away from the
00:07:39gaming tables into its unique heritage.
00:07:45a blend of Chinese and Portuguese cultures, what guests
00:07:49expect is shows is to see something different.
00:07:52Wow, and it's style a
00:07:56mix of old world charm with modern ingenuity. It's
00:08:00a very good blend the east and the west. To
00:08:04us, macaw is our root. We hope that visitors can
00:08:08understand that Maco has its own thriving
00:08:10culture. This is Next

00:08:14Maco.
00:08:29Macao may be small, but its skyline reflects its big
00:08:33ambitions. Grand Hotels a
00:08:37massive convention center, lights
00:08:40everywhere. Maco. is an architect's
00:08:43playground and a place obsessed with
00:08:46constructing new things, Simon is
00:08:50following his own
00:08:51path.
00:08:55he owns hotel central a nearly century old
00:08:58building and one the most iconic in
00:09:01Macao. Hotel Central and I
00:09:05are faded together, and that's because my family lived across from Hotel
00:09:09Central when I was born. The moment I became conscious and
00:09:12website, I saw hotel central right before
00:09:15me. Constructed in
00:09:181928, it was Macao's first ever fully
00:09:22integrated Casino Hotel and the first building to have an
00:09:25elevator. In 1942, it held the title as
00:09:29Macau's tallest skyscraper at 11 floors
00:09:32high, which drew the likes of Hollywood Star Clark Gable and
00:09:36James Bond author Ian Fleming. The allure the
00:09:40hotel captured Simon's heart at. early
00:09:43age.
00:09:47As children, we were very rowdy, and nowhere to go after school,
00:09:51we would frequent the largest building in Macau out of curiosity.
00:09:54One day I got caught by an employee and
00:09:57was thrown
00:09:57out onto
00:09:58the streets.
00:09:59As kid,
00:09:59you know, I didn't know better, so I pointed at the hotel and swore
00:10:03that I would buy it someday. That's what he did in
00:10:072016. By then, the hotel had fallen into decline
00:10:10after losing its casino.
00:10:25everyone around me, money can produce volume, but money
00:10:28cannot reproduce history. that is why
00:10:31i want to coexist with history. it's irreplaceable. i felt
00:10:35that restoring the hotel was huge business opportunity, so did
00:10:39it without hesitation.
00:10:43restoration got underway in 2020, from repiling the
00:10:47delicate foundation to restoring the exterior, simon
00:10:51wanted to retain the hotel's original integrity.
00:10:55The structure went through lot of changes that would have never been done before in
00:10:59Macao. We were the first in Macao to try our method. When
00:11:03you have no experience, you have to take time for trial and error
00:11:07every step the way. After about
00:11:11$50 million US dollars and years of restoring the
00:11:14building, Hotel Central officially opened in the summer of
00:11:182024. The design is based on styles from the
00:11:221920s to the 1940s, from the mosaic
00:11:25floor tiles, vintage, antiques, curated by Simon
00:11:29himself to the art deco
00:11:31elevators.
00:11:38Cultural heritage is essential for healthy tourism
00:11:42sector, observers say. The global heritage tourism market
00:11:46reached more than 580 billion US dollars in
00:11:492023. That number expected to grow to
00:11:53more than 810 billion.
00:11:55culture by 2032, according to market research firm,
00:11:58i'm mark heritage
00:12:00group. plays key role in contributing to the tourism
00:12:03development in macal, so in 2005, the historical
00:12:07center of macau was inscribed in the world heritage site
00:12:11including 22 sites and a squares. so
00:12:14start from that, so historical center maccao has become a unique tourism
00:12:18attractions and also a key reasons for
00:12:21visitors to visit macao. but
00:12:25bringing in those visitors means having viable ways for them to get to
00:12:29Maco, transportation by all means on the
00:12:32ground, by sea and
00:12:35air, and on the list the world's
00:12:39top 20 busiest airports you probably won't find
00:12:43this place, it might not even crack the top
00:12:4650. Welcome to Macao International
00:12:49Airport, basically to Macao, the modern
00:12:53aviation is is brand new. we bew it
00:12:56from up. built on reclaimed land on the eastern
00:13:00side the Macao peninsula, the airport began operating in
00:13:031995 with one terminal, 10 gates and a
00:13:07single runway. Macau International Airport is one the
00:13:11smallest major airports in southern China. about
00:13:15100 kilometers away, Guanjo's buyun international airport
00:13:19is one the world's busiest, according to airports Council
00:13:23International. It served. 63 million passengers in
00:13:262023, compared to Maco's 5
00:13:30million. Closer still is Hong Kong
00:13:33at only an hour's ferry ride away. Hong Kong
00:13:37International Airport offers flights to around 220
00:13:40destinations worldwide. Macau, around
00:13:4342. Still, its conception was
00:13:47huge source of pride for the small region. Chairman Simon
00:13:51Chan remembers it well.
00:13:56"back in 1994, when the airport is under
00:13:59construction, the whole city is excited, when the airport started the
00:14:03constructor, at that time I was in college, my father
00:14:06always cut the newspaper and send it to
00:14:08me. flag carrier Air Maco is based
00:14:12here, mainly serving mainland China.
00:14:16Since the disruption the pandemic in 2019, the airport has
00:14:20only recovered nearly 80% of
00:14:23pre-pandemic passenger. traffic observers say what they're missing
00:14:27is is those other markets, particularly Korea, but also
00:14:30Taiwan, uh, Philippines,
00:14:34Malaysia, all these, all these other markets are down,
00:14:38Thailand, and these were kind their main main markets, pre covid, in terms
00:14:42of after China,
00:14:44and which
00:14:44is obviously the by far their largest markets, I think from the tourism
00:14:48market point of view, of course, what they expect the
00:14:52airport is morewood. more
00:14:55airlines,
00:14:59overshadowed by nearby cities in both size and
00:15:02capacity, Simon says macaw and its airport need a unique
00:15:06strategy to grow.
00:15:08is a small city, we need to rely a little bit on more
00:15:12on the market around us, so the connectivity is very
00:15:16important, so besides expanding the
00:15:19airports, the interconnectivity
00:15:23between, airports and the city
00:15:26arounds are very important. is
00:15:30linked to nearby Hong Kong and Juhai through a 55
00:15:34km sea crossing bridge. It's important to to. look at
00:15:37it as kind of one region, particularly now that the infrastructure
00:15:41has improved with the opening of new bridges and so forth, what that does
00:15:45is it it opens up the lot of opportunities
00:15:48to to to kind of attract passengers or or tourists or
00:15:52visitors from visiting multiple destinations in the
00:15:56region, but it also makes it easier for somebody
00:16:00heading from to one destination to use an airport in another
00:16:03destination. new routes are being added and the...
00:16:07Airport has announced plans for expansion, which is due for completion in
00:16:112030. Although it's unlikely it will outgrow its
00:16:15neighbors. Operators at this little airport say it still has
00:16:19a big role to play in the region. We don't have
00:16:22their size, but we are having our own
00:16:26flexabilities.
00:16:41Street artist Annie Chong and her Costa Rican born husband Felipe
00:16:45Wong are hoping to put Bacao on the global stage,
00:16:48one toy a time. It's a very good
00:16:52blend the east and the west. Um,
00:16:56and storytelling wise, it's actually quite
00:16:59interesting too. In
00:17:022020, the couple found toy brand Nativo, which
00:17:06translates to... in both Portuguese and Spanish,
00:17:09reflecting their diverse backgrounds. Annie
00:17:13and Felipe gravitated toward this nostalgic medium plastic
00:17:17as their canvass and souvenires with their own spin,
00:17:21heavily inspired by hip-hop culture. In fact, the
00:17:25plastics industry is nothing new here. For a brief time
00:17:29in the 1980s, Macoo was a thriving hub for manufacturing,
00:17:32its main export
00:17:34toys.
00:17:37Match box. cars, hasbro's transformers G1, and
00:17:40Mattel's hot wheels were all made in
00:17:43Macao. Traditionally, everyone first thought we would go
00:17:47to Hong Kong, unfortunately, but um, but then when I
00:17:50start digging into it, I realized Macao was the first ones that were doing
00:17:54plastic and toys and then they moved to Hong Kong, then they moved
00:17:58into China. some people will see like some people that is not involved in the culture, it's like
00:18:02it's just a piece of plastic, but but these piece of plastic for us, this is the
00:18:06our stories, so... it is it is super important for
00:18:10us, we want people to react, we want people out to
00:18:13participate, to to get activated and to to find out that they can do all these things
00:18:17and we can show all this stuff to everybody else outside the city
00:18:20too. alice cock leads a non-profit organization
00:18:24helping develop the local art scene in macaw. i
00:18:28think this is quite characteristic to our
00:18:32our cultural identity, i think and so we we
00:18:36can see that the younger ' is they also have this uh
00:18:40tendency to mix uh very
00:18:43traditional medium and also very
00:18:46contemporary and the east and the west and and
00:18:49mixture with the mechanis
00:18:51culture. the local artists
00:18:55say they use macaau small size to their advantage to
00:18:59foster collaboration between disciplines. i think macao
00:19:03has that flexibility to do that uh small community so it's easier
00:19:07to... reach out to different people who are specializes in different
00:19:10areas to complete one single
00:19:13project, but that also means a small market.
00:19:17alice says artists here need more
00:19:19audiences. now they sell
00:19:23their products online and at toy shows and are preparing to sell
00:19:27their toys at this coffee shop. it could be big
00:19:31business too. the toy collectibles market is estimated to reach
00:19:35a market value of over 35. billion dollars
00:19:38by 2032, according to analysts, much of it
00:19:42made in mainland China. For education, for
00:19:46our younger generation, I think is uh, it's important
00:19:50for them to grow up, not
00:19:53only thinking that earning money is the
00:19:56only goal for them to survive,
00:20:00but to cultivate uh our spirit, being
00:20:04creative, I think is uh something that is... that is very
00:20:08important in the development of the society as a
00:20:11whole, we feel like everybody needs to to have
00:20:15this uh
00:20:16this uh feeling this attitude in life because it's a self-improvement thing, it's a
00:20:20self-expression thing, you find way to to to discover your
00:20:23own identity and toys connected very much
00:20:26with it. a
00:20:30growing young community inspired by the past, innovating for
00:20:34the future, and it's not just about art, There are
00:20:37budding young entrepreneurs doing the same thing across different
00:20:41sectors of Maco, including its most iconic
00:20:45delicacy.
00:20:48This is a port. egg tart with its flaky pastry
00:20:52shell and rich custard filling, it's one of macao's most
00:20:56beloved sweet treats, and now 28-year-old
00:21:00crystal quack has turned it into
00:21:02beer. this is
00:21:05Maco's very first craft beer company called funny
00:21:09eye, founded six years ago while Crystal was still a university
00:21:13student. The business has stood the test of
00:21:16time. Forget.
00:21:20but the rules, people think savory flavors cannot be made into
00:21:23beer, that food cannot be made into beer, but we're here
00:21:27to rewrite the rules, the young entrepreneur first
00:21:31experimented with fermentation in her own home and selling out of a
00:21:35wooden cart at weekend markets with
00:21:38friends.
00:21:44after years of fine tuning her brewing process with
00:21:47fermentation tanks and brewing equipment. tailored to fit inside
00:21:51her 12th floor warehouse brewery. Crystal is proud to
00:21:55say her beer is 100% made in
00:21:58Macau. In every aspect,
00:22:02people wonder why we base our operations in Macau. We have to
00:22:06source everything externally, but to us, Mcaw is our
00:22:10root. We hope that visitors can understand that Mcao has its
00:22:14own triving
00:22:15culture.
00:22:20famous ruins of St. Paul's, her tasting room is just 5
00:22:23minutes away. They pair
00:22:27snacks with seasonal beers on tap, mango sticky rice
00:22:31al, coriander and tea infused
00:22:34flavors. There isn't much of a drinking culture in
00:22:38Macao Crystal says, but she is eager to change the business
00:22:41landscape and evolve the industry for craft
00:22:44breweries. I think this type of
00:22:48thinking is becoming more. popular, they have a going desire to
00:22:52build something new, to try. I think Maco is seeing the
00:22:56next generation who want to do their own
00:22:58thing. Her brand is now
00:23:02expanding into Mainland, China and Hong Kong along the side
00:23:06of new non-alcoholic
00:23:08drinks. Young
00:23:12talent, working to ensure a future of Made in
00:23:15Macao.
00:23:29Codfish cake, seafood, rice, egg tart,
00:23:33these are some the staples of Portuguese comfort food, and for
00:23:37hungry, Asia-based fans the cuisine, you don't need a fly
00:23:41to Europe to get bite of this Portuguese heritage,
00:23:45they can get it right here in Maco,
00:23:48semi-autonomous region. in southern China and former
00:23:52Portuguese colony. It's been nearly 25 years since
00:23:56Macau's handover from Portugal back to
00:23:58China. The European
00:24:02influence here is still ubiquitus, like
00:24:06in the historic St. Lazarus district with cobbled
00:24:09streets, churches and colonial style
00:24:12architecture. Pedro Almada
00:24:16moved here from Portugal in 2015.
00:24:20"I love cooking since I
00:24:21was kid. Macao seems a bit portuguese uh,
00:24:25so I decided to come to Macao and start to cook Portuguese
00:24:29traditional
00:24:30food.
00:24:35The 31-year-old is the executive chef of Alberg
00:24:381601, one of
00:24:42number of Portuguese restaurants in Macao.
00:24:46Founded in 2010, his menu features an extensive list."
00:24:50of traditional portuguese classics, including the
00:24:54seafood rice. the secret to Alberg's
00:24:57appeal, authenticity, he says, we
00:25:01use recipes that are authentic,
00:25:05portuguese, so the way we can be
00:25:08creative is to bring new dishes that never been in
00:25:11macao.
00:25:16the restaurant's general manager says their design concept is based.
00:25:20unchanging appetites of tourists who increasingly want
00:25:24more, so by living here for 11 years, now we have
00:25:27diversity of tourists that are looking for, not just the casino
00:25:31and the five stars hotel and the mission stars, but also to look for the
00:25:35authenticity. outside it's courtyard frame by two
00:25:39century old camper trees with every room here
00:25:42made to look unique. what's different nowadays and what
00:25:46guests expect is shows is to see something different. They don't,
00:25:50they don't come just for the food, they come for the environment, for the music,
00:25:54uh, in this case, for the courtyard as well of restaurant.
00:25:58There's no shortage of good Michelin Start restaurants
00:26:01here, but... Some restaurant tours here are doubling
00:26:04down on Macao's Portuguese past. Observers like
00:26:08David Wong, a former food and beverage manager a major
00:26:12hotel chain in Macau says this helps them to stand out in
00:26:16crowded competitive space. So in Macao,
00:26:20independent restaurants the fies and they survived to this day
00:26:24and some have been open 40 years, 30
00:26:27years. Uh, so that's standard test of time, not many
00:26:30restaurants last that long. and what is real
00:26:34in macau i guess is with history of
00:26:37Portugal been there for 450 years and
00:26:41uh you should really try Portuguese cresine there and then you have
00:26:45the wines to match with
00:26:47it. Alberg 1601
00:26:51is owned by restaurant group in Macao that champions Portuguese
00:26:55gastronomy. its new adventure Kakista
00:26:58pays omage to his Asian home serving.
00:27:02Makinese cuisine, an authentically local
00:27:06cuisine that blends Chinese and Portuguese with influences from
00:27:10across Southeast Asia, India and Africa. The
00:27:13restaurant is located a historic house in Taipot,
00:27:17village on the northern tip of Macotai island. Of
00:27:21course, the mechanis cuisine is very old cuisine, what we have now is new
00:27:25equipments, new techniques that can uh make the better
00:27:29textures, we can keep the meats more juicy. "we
00:27:33can control the temperature, something that they couldn't do 500 years
00:27:36ago when Portuguese arrived to Macao, so I
00:27:40think the the gast
00:27:42the mechanis gastronomy is starting now new chapter
00:27:45and we we are very happy what what already uh is
00:27:49done, but I think is much more to come, he and his team hope to
00:27:52preserve and honor the territory's identity and
00:27:55history, and while most visitors to Maco don't come
00:27:59just eat, according to Wong, he hopes..." that changes
00:28:03soon, those who do will find unique flavors from
00:28:07east and west and no shortage of good local
00:28:10food.
00:28:2825 years after its return from Portugal to China,
00:28:32Macao is strategizing its way forward and developing
00:28:36new opportunities for growth across different
00:28:39sectors. What that will look like in another
00:28:4325 years is hard to tell for now. The
00:28:47former colonies big ambitions will be uniquely
