00:26:42Today, USKOK, as they stated, due to public interest, published
00:26:45the results of the environmental protection assessment in the case
00:26:49of illegal waste disposal in Gospić, in which the married
00:26:52couple Šincek is suspected. The published findings confirm that the area
00:26:56of the industrial complex is significantly polluted, the finding that was
00:27:00published is indeed concerning. There is
00:27:02great damage to the environment, but also a danger to people.
00:27:06Urgent remediation is needed. Residents who have long
00:27:09warned that their health is endangered, are bitter, but not
00:27:13surprised, they have only one question, and what
00:27:16now.
00:27:19A year and a half after the affair with illegal medical
00:27:22waste disposal was revealed, USKOK published the results of the assessment
00:27:25on as many as 365 pages. The analyses
00:27:29showed extremely elevated concentrations of substances such
00:27:33as copper, zinc, lead and antimony. The conclusion
00:27:36of the assessment is that it is a locally significant progressive
00:27:40pollution that has already caused permanent changes in
00:27:42the environment. It is warned that without remediation, the landfill
00:27:46will remain a permanent source of pollution with possible consequences for the environment
00:27:50and human health. For residents living near
00:27:53the landfill, fear has now received official confirmation.
00:27:57I am extremely afraid, primarily for my children and for all the children
00:28:01of this city, because they did not deserve for something
00:28:04to happen, for them to die in agony, for their parents
00:28:08to watch their suffering or for something to happen to their parents,
00:28:12that these children live without us, I think we live
00:28:15honestly, we try, we did not deserve this at all, because
00:28:19I also said, this was not
00:28:23that you couldn't influence, this is a human act, so a man
00:28:26sold our lives, our children's
00:28:30lives, our future, the future
00:28:34of the image, for some miserable money. The assessment shows
00:28:37that the problem did not remain only at the place where the waste
00:28:40was buried. In groundwater downstream from the landfill, PFAS compounds
00:28:44known as eternal chemicals were found. While in water
00:28:47from the public water supply system, exceedances
00:28:50of permitted values have not yet been determined,
00:28:53but citizens fear that the consequences of pollution will not remain
00:28:56limited to this location. The water is what
00:29:00it is, not all of us can afford to buy it, me and my family, we
00:29:03still drink it, eventually sometimes we treat ourselves,
00:29:07we buy water and so on, but it's not just water, where's
00:29:11the garden, where's the vegetable garden, where is the,
00:29:14so our crops, where is everything, we water all of that with this same
00:29:18water, and so every one of those
00:29:21products, every one of those fruits or vegetables, we again
00:29:24consume it, the published findings did not surprise
00:29:28the mayor of Gospić, but he says that remediation should
00:29:32be approached as soon as possible, which is good, no harmful
00:29:35compounds were found upstream, which means, I was talking about that, that
00:29:39the people of Gospić drink clean water, downstream
00:29:42certain concentrations of harmful
00:29:45compounds were found, but the report says it did not have
00:29:48an impact on human health because that water
00:29:52used in the public water supply is not used for
00:29:56drinking. This is not only a problem for Gospić, this is also a problem for all surrounding
00:30:00places and for our Senj and for Otočac. We cannot be
00:30:03happy because it goes downstream and someone else will suffer, so we are equally
00:30:07concerned for all residents of Lika. The citizens' initiative Gospić
00:30:11Naš Dom has been warning about this case for years, and they also organized
00:30:15a protest and wonder how it is possible that no one has
00:30:18reacted yet. It is sad actually that to this day, and
00:30:22already tomorrow all public health bodies in
00:30:25the Republic of Croatia, from the Ministry of Health to the Andrija Štampar Institute
00:30:28of Public Health and all of them, they must give
00:30:32the citizens of Gospić and Lika guidelines on how to act
00:30:35on these conclusions from the findings of the opinion, it is sad that
00:30:39a year and a half after the affair was discovered, there has been no
00:30:42synergy of all state bodies to
00:30:45protect their citizens, that is their duty, they receive
00:30:49a salary for that, urgent remediation, urgent public
00:30:52health instructions to the citizens of Gospić and Lika on how to
00:30:56behave, not only Lika.
