00:01:21Wimbledon, I played the first round against We return to the show New Day, friend of the show, General
00:01:24Hospital Medikana
00:01:26Sarajevo.
00:01:32tennis, sometimes it turns your
00:01:35"I was guided by that, I didn't know how good I was or if I would
00:01:39ever be able to achieve that, we
00:01:42honestly didn't have anyone to
00:01:45look up to, we didn't know which path, which way we should go, we
00:01:49somehow solved the tasks
00:01:52one by one, but
00:01:55we succeeded and I would like my path
00:01:59to be..." this indicator for other children that from
00:02:02absolutely no conditions results can be made, I
00:02:06just regret that how much
00:02:09time has passed since the war and how much
00:02:13the only scenario, it's one of this time has passed since we made those
00:02:16great successes, I mean
00:02:19the Davis Cup team, my successes from
00:02:232015, 2016, 2017 until
00:02:26today, uh tennis - tennis in Bosnia and
00:02:29Herzegovina. it had to be raised a little, to rise above
00:02:33all that, I regret that even today my city
00:02:36Sarajevo, does not have a proper tennis center, children do not have
00:02:39where to train, where to train in winter, we don't have a hard court,
00:02:43when I come to Sarajevo in winter it is really almost impossible
00:02:46to train because there are simply no conditions, I would like to
00:02:50come sometime before the tournament on hard courts, but I have nowhere to
00:02:54play, I can simply come to Sarajevo to rest, that's
00:02:58it, so I am really sorry that even today
00:03:02we don't have that tennis center that would help children,
00:03:05tournaments are of course very important, but that system
00:03:08that Mr. Haris talked about is sorely needed, because without it, we simply cannot
00:03:12expect that there will be many players
00:03:16who will succeed individually with their families to
00:03:20achieve some great successes, so
00:03:23one of my goals when I finish my career is to
00:03:26dedicate myself to tennis in Bosnia and Herzegovina, unfortunately I still... "I
00:03:30have to take care of my career while I still can,
00:03:33then yes, then I will then I will
00:03:37try to dedicate myself more to tennis in Bosnia and Herzegovina, not just me,
00:03:41I will try to gather the national team members of Bosnia and Herzegovina,
00:03:44to see if there is a chance to
00:03:48systematically change the situation of sport
00:03:51in general, but especially tennis, because I think that tennis in Bosnia and Herzegovina
00:03:55deserves much more, we will be happy to hand over this tennis tournament to you
00:03:59to continue." to lead when you start, well, I hope that we will know how to
00:04:03lead it in the right way as you led it, because this is really a big
00:04:06thing, 30 years, mm, you said it all started in
00:04:101996, it grew into one of
00:04:13the biggest European tournaments, so, and Sarajevo
00:04:17deserves much more of these kinds of
00:04:20events, it's sad, everything you were
00:04:23just talking about, how much the local government
00:04:27doesn't recognize the importance of sport or tennis. or these kinds of
00:04:30tournaments, or how important these tournaments are for international reputation,
00:04:34let's hope that it will all change somehow, during these three
00:04:37decades, numerous talents have passed through Sarajevo who later
00:04:40achieved great careers, here, Damir
00:04:44actually started 19 years ago and we all know what he
00:04:48did in the meantime, do we have any more names that we could especially
00:04:51mention, well, certainly the most significant name is Daniil Medvedev who was number one
00:04:55in the world, he played in the semifinals in 2010,
00:04:59he lost to our... from Tuzla, after that
00:05:02the winner was Laslo Djere, also a big name from Serbia, that
00:05:06tennis player still active, that Turu Ivan, Marin
00:05:09Čilić, so he came here at 12 years old. he played
00:05:13until he was 16, so he came four years in a row, unfortunately he didn't manage to
00:05:17win, Ivan Dodig won our tournament, I think
00:05:20in 2000, all these
00:05:24our Mirza Bašić, Nerman Fatić, Šetkić, I must
00:05:27mention the girls Mervana Jugić,
00:05:30that
00:05:33uh, there was also Deja Hedžavić, Nefisa
00:05:35Berberovići, now there's Nova Tea Kovačević,
00:05:39a lot of well-known names have been here
00:05:43in Sarajevo and afterwards, as you said, they made
00:05:46good tennis careers, some really significant ones, it's a
00:05:50pleasure for me, I have to congratulate Damir again and his
00:05:54family who participated in all this development of his
00:05:57career, what he achieved and what he achieved for the image of
00:06:01Bosnia and Herzegovina and the development of tennis in
00:06:04Bosnia and Herzegovina, and everything changes somehow,
00:06:06we are talking now about three decades, we are talking
00:06:10about your career which... lasts,
00:06:13you will surely achieve many
00:06:16more successes in the future, how much does today's
00:06:20junior tennis differ from the time when you played such tournaments, how much has
00:06:24changed at all? Well, I think that
00:06:27nothing has changed too much, except that
00:06:30mm, I think, I think that today children
00:06:34mature a little earlier and I think that they
00:06:37realize a little earlier what is needed to
00:06:41succeed. Especially, I mean children mm
00:06:44from big countries in Europe, the world mm for them
00:06:48it is somehow already instilled from
00:06:51a young age what they have to do how much they have to do to achieve
00:06:55success. Up to
00:06:5810-11 years old it can be a game, later it really
00:07:02turns into real work, that's maybe
00:07:05what we lack a little in Bosnia and Herzegovina -
00:07:09I say, it's all
00:07:1212 years old in France, if you are among the better
00:07:15players, you have absolutely everything provided and it's different with
00:07:19that, knowing that
00:07:21you have all that around you, that you have the best coaches, that you have the best
00:07:25preparations for all that, it's certainly easier to
00:07:29work, but generally I think that children mature much earlier than
00:07:32before, I remember at 14, 15 years old when we went to
00:07:36tournaments, the most important thing for us was to have
00:07:39fun, to have some nice company. "The game
00:07:43was somehow in and tournaments were somehow secondary, it was
00:07:47important for us to be together, to socialize all the time,
00:07:50today I would say that it's a little bit like that, although there's still a lot
00:07:54of playing and socializing, that children
00:07:58still know what their job is and what they have to do, they already come with
00:08:01coaches, with fitness coaches, we often
00:08:04used to, because we didn't have money to pay, I
00:08:08was lucky that my father was always with me, but we couldn't travel with a
00:08:12coach." with conditioning coaches, that was unimaginable, so
00:08:15especially players from other countries, today already at 14, 15
00:08:19years old they train seriously and already have in
00:08:22their heads what could be and what they should
00:08:26do, so I would say new technologies,
00:08:29absolutely, absolutely and I would say that is some change compared to
00:08:33how it looked when I started
00:08:3720 years ago, 25 years ago, precisely
00:08:41in that sense. that's where everything changed the most, the competitive
00:08:44spirit in children is more pronounced, because everything is somehow fortunately
00:08:48still more accessible compared to some previous
00:08:51periods and times, and parents are more
00:08:54dedicated today because they can ultimately afford more
00:08:58to enable those individual trainings that were perhaps
00:09:01a real luxury in your time, uh
00:09:05let's also deal a bit more with the
00:09:09tournament itself that started yesterday and will last until Saturday. What
00:09:12will happen during these days, how will it all look? So,
00:09:16we have, well, Friday are the semi-final matches, tomorrow on
00:09:20Saturday the final match from 9 AM, at the tennis courts
00:09:24of the sports and recreation center Koševo, I invite all
00:09:27our fellow citizens and those who love tennis, to come
00:09:31up there to support these young tennis players, to
00:09:35see perhaps some future tennis
00:09:38stars, I would take this opportunity to
00:09:41thank... the canton of Sarajevo, which as the general
00:09:45sponsor, through the Ministry of Culture and Sports, helped
00:09:48this tournament, the mayor of the city of Sarajevo, Mr. Avdić, who is the patron of this
00:09:52tournament, uh the Federation
00:09:55through the canton Ministry of Culture and Sports, Mrs.
00:09:59Sanja Vlaisavljević supported this tournament
00:10:02the municipality center, NLB bank, Energo invest,
00:10:06those are some and Greenmark partners and those are the
00:10:09people who helped, without that help it would simply be... difficult to
00:10:13hold this tournament and make it, we thank them
00:10:16through this way, I say again,
00:10:20come all to the courts up there, you will see that there is a lot of talent, there are a lot
00:10:24of interesting... matches and this that we talked about
00:10:26earlier, young tennis players, I follow that, they
00:10:30come, you can clearly see who decided to succeed,
00:10:34they are in focus and they do everything that is
00:10:37planned, because nothing is
00:10:41left to chance, there's no more enthusiasm and there are no things
00:10:45that are not planned, so
00:10:49already now serious tennis
00:10:52work begins at these ages, at 16 years old.
00:10:55Exactly, and since we don't often have the opportunity, Damir, to host you on
00:10:59our program and you
00:11:01have played in some of the biggest tournaments in the world including the Australian Open,
00:11:05Masters tournaments in Miami, Madrid, Rome, this summer you were
00:11:09also in Umag, you had the final of the ATP tournament, how do
00:11:12you rate your season so far?
00:11:15Well, you know, I never
00:11:18when it comes to me, I don't say
00:11:22that it was great, I always think that... better,
00:11:25this year, unfortunately, there were
00:11:29a few matches that went to the opponent's
00:11:32side, the Roland Garros match where I
00:11:36was leading 2:1 in sets against Davidovich Fokina and was serving
00:11:39for the match in the fourth set, it went to his
00:11:42side, the match at
00:11:46the later semi-finalist, I was leading a set and a break, there were a lot
00:11:50of such matches where I played good tennis against very good players,
00:11:53unfortunately I didn't win, but... That's sport, that's
00:11:57way, sometimes it doesn't, unfortunately, I would say this year it went
00:12:01to the opponent's side a little more often, but
00:12:04regardless, I'm not dissatisfied with my game, my game was really quite
00:12:08good, Umag showed somehow
00:12:11all that, one or two matches that were very close, went my way, I played that
00:12:15final, in the final I ran out of strength a bit, but uh,
00:12:19I think that's the right indicator of how I should
00:12:22play until the end of the season. Generally,
00:12:25I think the season is very long in tennis, you never know what's going to
00:12:29happen every week, you have a new chance, that's the best thing about
00:12:33tennis, again on the other hand, I think that such a
00:12:37long season exhausts players a lot, you simply can't be consistent
00:12:41throughout the year, I hope that I will play the
00:12:44US Open and the tournaments after the US Open
00:12:48at a good level and most importantly, at the end of the year, be among
00:12:52the top 100, which will be the final goal,
00:12:56it's important to stay there, to play you're very close, you are currently
00:12:59104, if I'm not mistaken, yes, yes, I'm really on the edge, if we just look at the
00:13:03results from this year, I'm among the top 90, that's
00:13:06the most important thing, so there's nothing special I
00:13:10need to do by the end of the year, just be a little more
00:13:13consistent and I think that the top 100 shouldn't be
00:13:17questioned because, again, in tennis, it's most important
00:13:20to play the main tournaments, the Grand Slams
00:13:24and Masters. and you already make great
00:13:27results just by doing that, exactly, I wish you much luck and success
00:13:31and also to you with the tournament that is
00:13:35currently taking place, I hope we will see each other more often in our program, thank you
00:13:38very much for being our guests this morning, thank you, thank you for greeting you, dear
00:13:42viewers, Damir Džumhur and Haris Kaferić spoke for
00:13:46the new day, stay with us, we will be here until
00:13:4811.
00:13:58You watched New Day, a friend of the show,
00:14:01Medicana Health Group.
00:16:38With Dr. Fouti appearing before a senate committee last week, we've been hearing the phrase
00:16:42gain of function research again. What does it actually
00:16:45mean? Basically, it's where genetic modifications are made an
00:16:49organism to change what that organism can do. This has many
00:16:52positive uses, but gain of function can also be another way to describe the
00:16:56beginning of biological warfare, such as when you modify
00:16:59virus. And as if we don't have enough to worry about already. The specter of
00:17:03such warfare still haunts the world. Think back several years ago to the beginning.
00:17:07the COVID outbreak, pretty scary stuff, required all hands on
00:17:11deck around the world, and yet COVID's letality was not even
00:17:151%. Now imagine an organism designed to kill
00:17:19at something like 100%, and to be easily
00:17:22transmissible, it would make nuclear war look like child's
00:17:25play. Sure, buildings would still be standing, but the people inside would all be
00:17:29dead. Though biological warfare is a war crime and is covered by
00:17:33the 1972 biological weapons convention, there's no guarantee that some
00:17:37lab. out there isn't planning or engaged in it now,
00:17:40and even if no one tries to commit biological warfare, there's that
00:17:44not too unlikely scenario of another lab leak, a phrase
00:17:48associated with the COVID outbreak as well, so we need to think about the
00:17:51possibilities and to figure out how to prevent the worst. someone who's
00:17:55already done a lot of that thinking is investigative journalist Andy
00:17:58Jacobson, her specialty is war and weapons, not to mention
00:18:02government secrecy. in 2024 she came out with
00:18:05nuclear war, a scenario, "and now she has new best
00:18:09seller, it is called biological war a
00:18:12scenario. Annie joins me now. Annie, your your book is not
00:18:15science fiction, you kind of reverse engineered it from
00:18:19Pentagon documents and the people who plan this sort of thing.
00:18:22Walk me through how fast it moves. In other words, it
00:18:26starts with lab leak in Siberia, in your
00:18:29scenario, how many days until total anarchy in the
00:18:32US?
00:18:35Well, I take the reader from out. break as you say to
00:18:39anarchy in six days, because that is
00:18:42precisely what would happen if you have
00:18:46pathogen that has been genetically modified
00:18:49to be hypervirulent, like kill lot of people, covid
00:18:53killed 1% or less, there are
00:18:56pathogens, the one I use in my book, pneumonic plague has
00:19:00100% case fatality rate, if
00:19:03you also modify that to be you know human to
00:19:07human. transmissible, fancy word for
00:19:09airborne, and and it is also modified
00:19:13to defeat medical counter measures, vaccines,
00:19:17antibiotics, now you have nightmare
00:19:20scenario at scale that is happening
00:19:23so fast, there is just absolutely no way that the
00:19:27government can respond.
00:19:29so in the book, you alternate between laying out the data, the
00:19:33history, the science, and then you paint the picture of this
00:19:36scenario. and there are any number of instances as I read the book where I found
00:19:40myself saying, wait a minute, is that actually true? So here's a detail that I
00:19:44couldn't shake, you have the Soviets working to engineer
00:19:48this plague so that the infected would feel more
00:19:51euphoric, so that they would go out and they would socialize. Is
00:19:55that true?
00:19:57It is true, and it's a detail that was given to me by one of the
00:20:01world's subject matter experts on plague,
00:20:04Dr. Henry Hein. He worked at Fort D. trick at the
00:20:08usamrid facility, that's the defense department's only
00:20:11BSL4, that's a maximum containment
00:20:14facility in America, and
00:20:17hineo told me that when they were working to develop,
00:20:21try and develop medical counter measures for plague in the early
00:20:252000s, they you know in the late
00:20:281990s is when they had learned the Russian scientists in
00:20:31their illegal
00:20:33program were inserting the gene for you for.
00:20:38into the front end of the disease, and you might say, well, why
00:20:41on earth would anyone do that? well, if you feel
00:20:44terribly ill, because you have plague, you're going to go
00:20:48home, get under the cover. and not infect lot of
00:20:52people, but if you're feeling euphoria, you're
00:20:55going to naturally want to go out and socialize, you might even wind
00:20:59up in a disco, which is where the scenario i write
00:21:03begins. okay, and this then creates the
00:21:07damned if you do, damned if you don't, scenario relative to gain a
00:21:10function research, because if we think that some of our
00:21:14adversaries are engaged in this sort of experimentation, the
00:21:17only way, you correct me if i'm wrong, that we can't be ready is
00:21:21if we too are involved in gain of function research,
00:21:24so what should we be
00:21:26doing?
00:21:29mean, you've hit the nail on the head with the catch 22
00:21:32often of war gaming, of actual warfare, which
00:21:36is you know sword and shield, you know,
00:21:39count, attack, offense, defense, and so gain
00:21:43a function does exactly that, it's it's looking at
00:21:46pathogens and trying to give them more, you know,
00:21:50virulence, make them airborne, defeat
00:21:53medical counter measures, under the premise that you're
00:21:57actually doing defensive work, so that if
00:22:00someone attacks you with a genetically modified
00:22:03weapon, you have some sense of how to
00:22:07perhaps make a counter measure, but of course we know
00:22:10from COVID that this creates an extremely dangerous
00:22:14situation whereby the
00:22:16threat, the risk, I think most people would tell
00:22:20you is so much greater than any potential
00:22:23reward. you deliberately
00:22:26anchored so many plot points to something that has actually
00:22:30happened in COVID, the the the cruise ship, the wet market
00:22:33explanation, even an aircraft carrier that's taken out a commission,
00:22:37why, why was it important to you that none of this be invented
00:22:41and that you were able to peg it to real
00:22:42events?
00:22:45for the same reason i put my sources right up
00:22:48front, i list. to I spoke to, I do this in nuclear
00:22:52war scenario and I do it in biological war scenario. I want readers to
00:22:56understand that these are scenarios that are gamed out
00:23:00by the Pentagon, it's not
00:23:03them, and so you get the sense of this could
00:23:07actually happen, and people are thinking about this. I'm not
00:23:10writing to terrify people, the point is really not
00:23:14panic as much as it is pressure, because once
00:23:18the regular folks, we the...
00:23:20people understand, these are major threats, they
00:23:24exist, the government is trying to prepare for them, and in essence
00:23:27knows there is nothing they can do, then we can all
00:23:31have a sort of more informed say in what we
00:23:34think about something, like for example, gain a
