00:03:25Berlin. It looks just like regular dirt because it
00:03:28is, but squashed into blocks, it becomes something
00:03:32potentially revolutionary. Compared to traditional clay bricks,
00:03:35making the soil blocks emits 97% less carbon
00:03:38dioxide. A revolution is needed because in environmental
00:03:42terms the construction industry is filthy. The building
00:03:46sector is the world's biggest polluter. According to the
00:03:49UN, between 2024 and 2025, it accounted for
00:03:5234% of total global CO2 emissions. Over the same
00:03:56time period, that's more than the automotive and aviation sectors.
00:04:01One reason is the way traditional building materials are made. To make
00:04:05them strong enough to use, clay bricks are baked in furnaces that hit temperatures

00:04:16fuels and release massive amounts of soot and carbon dioxide into the

00:04:32As soon as they're no longer wanted, buildings are often razed to the
00:04:36ground, and a lot of that debris just ends up in

00:05:35the one hand means that it's very, very low in terms of CO2 emissions,
00:05:39and on the other hand, it also means that there are no toxic gases or
00:05:42any toxic substances released in the process. When a building is constructed from
00:05:46the material, the eco bricks compete with our traditional
00:05:50counterparts in terms of their ability to bear loads and can support
00:05:54building of up to 17 meters tall, four or five stories
00:05:57high. Each brick can withstand roughly 29 metric tons of
00:06:01pressure before breaking. That's roughly the weight of 15
00:06:04cars. The blocks can be laid with mortar and plaster also
00:06:08made from earth. Rooms in houses made from them are cooler and more.
00:06:13I really hope that we can sort of take on the conventional
00:06:16masonry um construction sector and substitute a significant
00:06:20share of what's nowadays built with carbon
00:06:23intensive and also materials that are not recyclable at the end of the
00:06:27life cycle with the earth blocks that we are producing which are
00:06:30100% made from waste materials, uh very low in terms
00:06:34of CO2 emissions during the production, and at the end of the life
00:06:37cycle, most importantly, we can recycle them to new earth building
00:06:41products without any loss of value or without having to add any new
00:06:45materials.
00:06:48This is Siny Jensen, a researcher at the Natural Building Lab at Berlin's
00:06:52Technical University. She helped design Germany's first building
00:06:56to use recycled wood in load bearing capacity, but
00:07:00using reclaimed materials is only part of the picture. Every part of
00:07:04construction is always needing and you always extract
00:07:07new materials, you always invest more energy, you
