00:07:29family, to be honest. She was the one that got up to mischief.

00:08:53sewage overflow. We carried on the day, she played on the
00:08:57beach, did normal things. But then in the
00:09:00evening, when we went for our evening walk, uh, she started, she suddenly became
00:09:04unwell. Um, and and became
00:09:08quite distressed. Uh, so we got her back
00:09:11to the... and did what any parent would do
00:09:14and go, "You've got a sickness and diarrhea, you can't have anything to eat or
00:09:18drink, you'll be better soon. Don't worry about it. I'll stay with
00:09:21you. Dad and Suzanne will go out."
00:09:24Um, but she she didn't, she wasn't getting
00:09:28better. Um, so we took her to the chemist.
00:09:31The chemist prescribed her a rehydration solution. You know, sickness and diarrhea, same, you know,
00:09:35every, every parent's journey with a child that's got, you know, sickness and
00:09:39diarrhea. Um, but then as things
00:09:42regressed, she started to bleed, and that's when we went back to the doctors, and
00:09:46that's when we were rushed to casualty. Um,
00:09:49and everything you saw in Dirty Business is what happened. Um,

00:09:59exploring the state of the UK waters and the the
00:10:03industry involved in it. Southwest Water carried out

00:10:45the time, they completely assumed it was from food. And when
00:10:49they drew a blank, that's when they started looking at the
00:10:53environment. When you think about it? You know, Heather died back in
00:10:561999, and water companies say you're in a very
00:11:00different place to where we were in the
00:11:021990s. But are we then? Well, that's the thing. I
00:11:06mean, you went to Westminster
00:11:09with Surfers Against Sewage last week with some very
00:11:13stark statistics from the summer period.
00:11:17Um, also with personal stories from families. This
00:11:21summer, there was a young girl called Keeva, eight years old. She became
00:11:25unwell after swimming at Avon Beach in Dorset, again a
00:11:29designated bathing water site awarded
00:11:31excellent. She swallowed seawater while swimming at her local
00:11:35beach and was hospitalized afterwards. What is it like for you
00:11:39to see this happening up and down the
00:11:42country
00:11:44repeatedly? What is it like for you as a family who have lost a
00:11:48daughter? It, it's a mixture. There's
00:11:51anger,
00:11:53real anger, but so there's a
00:11:57deep sadness, because when I had my
00:12:00meeting with the Secretary of State and the Secretary for Water, the
00:12:04Minister for Water, sorry, I said to them really clearly,
00:12:08"I am not going to stop until
00:12:11something changes," because I cannot
00:12:14allow this to happen to another child and another
00:12:17family. I can't, because it's
00:12:20horrific, and you can't, you can't ignore the
00:12:24fact that this is a public
00:12:28health crisis. The the sewage system, its
00:12:32primary function is to protect public health, and
00:12:34it's not doing that. And so
00:12:38I just cannot understand why there are all these people in
00:12:42power, all these people that have the authority. They must have
00:12:45children, they must have families. They must
00:12:49feel, you know, they must understand,
00:12:52and yet they continue to do the same
00:12:56things, over and over again, such as discharging sewage into
00:13:00bathing water. Why would you do that? Why would
00:13:03you run the risk on your watch, the
00:13:07possibility of another death? Why would you do that? Final question,
00:13:10Julie, um, water safety became a mandatory part of the
00:13:13curriculum in the UK in schools, to do with water safety.
00:13:16We had an unprecedented number of deaths this year from people getting into
00:13:20difficulty open water swimming. It didn't include
00:13:23water quality. We that that does get
00:13:27taught as part of geography lessons. But in your case,
00:13:30you actually brought our guide with the charity Surfers Against Sewage
00:13:34to make people aware, because that's the thing. People go to the
00:13:37seaside and they don't always have an app to check what the
00:13:41quality of water is like. But you want to educate
00:13:45young people, because while they're perhaps not being looked after by the state or water
00:13:48companies, they need to look after themselves. What do you want to see in
00:13:51schools? Well, the people that are taking them on the trip, doing the risk
00:13:55assessments, doing a full risk assessment, looking at water
00:13:58quality, including that in the risk assessment. And also making
00:14:02children aware. I mean, how many, I mean, I know, because I used to work
00:14:06in education, if kids got dirty, just rinse your hands in the water when you're on an
00:14:10outdoor ed, just give your hands a rinse. And it's like, now that's not the
00:14:13case. That is not a safe place to actually make sure you're clean. You
00:14:17know, use some wet wipes, use antibac, use something. Don't
00:14:21touch your lips, you know, all that kind of basic stuff. Don't touch your lips.
00:14:25Wash your hands before eating. Hygiene. Think of the
00:14:28water as potentially contaminated. Don't
00:14:31assume it's not, 'cause we can't
00:14:34assume that the water companies, the environmental
00:14:38agency, the government are looking after us at the
00:14:41moment. They aren't. So we have to protect ourselves, and
00:14:44that's my big message at the moment
00:14:47is, "Don't assume. Take care, look
00:14:50after your children, keep them safe. The water isn't
00:14:54safe."
