00:12:20stands behind such views, can genetics overturn some of
00:12:23our longest-held beliefs about origin, identity
00:12:26and heritage, our guest on New Day is geneticist Anela Zorla Kujdurović, good

00:13:02origin, family, culture, language, custom,
00:13:05all of that somehow creates identity, so I always like to say that
00:13:09we must be careful what genetics will tell us, that we must really
00:13:12filter that information in the right way and use it. We often
00:13:16emphasize mutual differences, especially here in our region,
00:13:19generally in the Balkans, how genetically similar are we really
00:13:23to each other in this area? Well, that is
00:13:26a question, I think, of the century, we always ask that question, especially us in the Western Balkans,
00:13:30and I really try, and surely many of my colleagues, to explain that these
00:13:34are really small differences. If we talk about genetics, or genomics,
00:13:38genomic origin, we are not only
00:13:41in the Western Balkans, but generally people, the entire human
00:13:44population, we differ by only 0.1 percent in every
00:13:47nucleotide, which means we are actually
00:13:4999.9% similar, those differences are really
00:13:53small, miniature, but they are very
00:13:57important. Why are they important? They are important in terms of medicine, they are important in
00:14:00terms of rare diseases, they are important in terms of
00:14:03oncology, because these differences now allow us precision,
00:14:07sensitivity in which direction we should optimize treatment, diagnostics
00:14:11and so on and so forth, in that clinical sense, not unfortunately in the sense that
00:14:15we are using it more and more today,
00:14:18human population, people all over the world, these are minimal
00:14:21differences, so we can only assume
00:14:25how minimal are the differences between us here in this narrower area,
00:14:28that is, in our state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, because that
00:14:32is a very important phenomenon that we must talk about. We were not a
00:14:35closed population, we are a population that has moved throughout history,
00:14:39we have mixed, we have settled in other areas, we were not
00:14:42consistent in one area to have a clean generation, a clean population, so
00:14:46we can go back in time and see the origin of our
00:14:50ancestors, and then we would probably be even more surprised at how much we are similar
00:14:53in that regard as well... surprised at how similar we
00:14:57actually are in that regard, because if we go back to some historical facts,
00:15:00the conquests of these areas, migrations from these areas to the interior
00:15:04of Europe, and to other continents, then we see that genetics complicates
00:15:08things a bit, that we have too much dared to
00:15:11trivialize some of our personal purposes that have nothing to do with science,
00:15:15yes, very often for political purposes, unfortunately, I don't avoid
00:15:18using that term, but that's it, but we can see here how similar we
00:15:22are physically to each other, after all. So, these are minimal,
00:15:26almost non-existent differences, that's right, so
00:15:29genetics cannot confirm these ideas of pure origin, special
00:15:33peoples, or God forbid the superiority of some over others.

00:15:54pure, superior population, so unfortunately

00:16:01to be guided by facts and figures. If we go back to
00:16:05the process of inheritance, the transmission of genetic
00:16:07material between individuals, we see that it is quite complicated, I like

00:17:58mitochondrial DNA, but it is exclusively inherited from
00:18:02the mother's line, meaning the mother will pass it on to both boys and
00:18:06girls, but that girl... will pass on that mother's mitochondrial DNA. Then
00:18:09the question arises, who then actually continues that lineage, is it
00:18:13a son or is it a girl? Then, regarding this question, we can
00:18:17say it is a girl, that it is not, so to speak, a male lineage,
00:18:21that boys continue the line. Then we go back to complicate
00:18:24the story, we go back to the Y chromosome which
