00:00:25Good morning, I am Nataša Miljković, welcome to the new day morning program
00:00:28of N. Television. Hashim Thaçi was sentenced to
00:00:3225 years in prison before the Special Court in The Hague,
00:00:35found guilty of unlawful or arbitrary
00:00:39arrest, deprivation of liberty, as a war crime, for cruel
00:00:42treatment as a war crime, for torture as a war crime and
00:00:46for murder as a war crime. The same sentence
00:00:49was handed down to Jakup Krasniqi, 25 years
00:00:52in prison, while two other KLA leaders were sentenced: Kadri
00:00:56Veseli to 18 years and Rexhep Selimi to 13 years. The indictment
00:01:00charges them with crimes against humanity and war crimes committed from
00:01:03at least March 1998 until
00:01:06September 1999
00:01:09in Kosovo and parts of northern Albania, and therefore we now go to
00:01:13The Hague, to our Sanja Sovrlić, who during yesterday
00:01:16followed the events before, during and after this verdict.
00:01:20Sanja, what did the trial
00:01:22itself look like?
00:01:26Nataša, the trial began, of course, they were
00:01:29present. Uh, the accused at that moment,
00:01:32now convicted KLA leaders in the gallery, members
00:01:35of their families, it began with the reading
00:01:39of the main parts of the
00:01:43indictment and what the court
00:01:46established as their responsibility and what
00:01:49the court could
00:01:52not establish. Also,
00:01:55the role of Hashim
00:01:58Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep
00:02:02Selimi during the 90s, what their
00:02:06role was within the KLA, Hashim Thaçi was
00:02:09the political leader of the KLA, Kadri Veseli, part of
00:02:12the intelligence service, Rexhep Selimi Operational, Jakup Krasniqi
00:02:16support for the KLA, but also what
00:02:19they were after the war, all four of them had
00:02:22and were significant officials
00:02:26in Kosovo for years. After that,
00:02:30the pronouncement of the verdict followed,
00:02:33by reading their responsibility in order,
00:02:36what were the aggravating and what were the mitigating
00:02:40circumstances for the pronouncement of the verdict,
00:02:43which were seriously considered, which were not seriously considered,
00:02:47and it was established that
00:02:50they are responsible for four counts of the indictment
00:02:54for war crimes, but that the court could not
00:02:57establish six counts that
00:03:00relate to crimes against humanity. When it
00:03:03comes to what they were convicted for,
00:03:07those are four counts, namely, arbitrary
00:03:10and unlawful detention of 385
00:03:14has started blowing in the northern regions, people, cruel treatment of at least 49
00:03:17people, torture of at least 303
00:03:20people and murder of 96 people
00:03:24- Serbs, Albanians, Roma - those who were
00:03:27considered opponents of the KLA. Because the court
00:03:31finds that it is arbitrary arrest and that
00:03:34it is not targeted
00:03:36uh targeted arrest, torture, cruel
00:03:40treatment, murder of a specific group of civilians,
00:03:44for this reason they are not accused of that part concerning
00:03:47crimes against humanity. Also, what
00:03:51the court did not
00:03:54take into account, i.e., was not covered by
00:03:59their speeches and the verdict, are the events after June 20,
00:04:011999. I will remind you that the indictment refers
00:04:05to the period March
00:04:071998 - September
00:04:101999, but
00:04:13the court believes that after June 20,
00:04:17that period cannot be considered an armed conflict
00:04:21in Kosovo, given that its cessation is considered
00:04:24the moment when international forces arrived in
00:04:27Kosovo. However, that does not mean
00:04:30that, therefore, in the pronouncement of the verdict it was stated that it is now up to the local
00:04:34courts to deal with this issue and
00:04:37the prosecution of these war crimes. This certainly refers to
00:04:40the courts in Belgrade
00:04:44and Priština. These crimes were
00:04:48indeed severe, large-scale,
00:04:51committed in 14 municipalities in Kosovo
00:04:55and at two locations in Northern
00:04:58Albania.
00:05:00And Sanja, the verdict is now here, and what are the reactions, what happened
00:05:04during
00:05:05the day?
00:05:08That's right, Nataša, the first-instance verdict is followed
00:05:12by the appeal procedure. Namely, within 30
00:05:16days, not from the pronouncement, but from the written delivery
00:05:19of the verdict, the accused have the right to appeal,
00:05:23after which there is a period of 60 days for
00:05:26the appellate panel to respond, so in the next couple of months we can
00:05:30expect a final,
00:05:33or rather, a definitive verdict. And what
00:05:37the defense has already announced is that they will appeal, that is
00:05:40one of the reactions of the defense attorneys. Hashim Thaçi, the former president and political
00:05:44leader of the KLA, said that he was shocked by the verdict,
00:05:48that it was predetermined,
00:05:52that the evidence presented by the defense
00:05:55was not taken into consideration, but only that which was taken, which was
00:05:59presented by the prosecution,
00:06:02and also, therefore,
00:06:05an appeal is announced. The chief prosecutor of the Specialist Chambers of Kosovo says
00:06:09that this verdict is very important. I have
00:06:12seen that during the pronouncement of the verdict,
00:06:15former or ex-officials
00:06:18in Kosovo were present,
00:06:21for example, Petrit Selimi, who was
00:06:25the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, otherwise from
00:06:28the Democratic Party of Kosovo, from which Krasniqi, Veseli
00:06:32and Thaçi came, but also the current Minister of Foreign Affairs
00:06:36Glauk Konjufca, who is from the ranks
00:06:38of Vetëvendosje. I would like to remind you that Rexhep Selimi is also from Vetëvendosje, and Glauk
00:06:42Konjufca, I saw, spoke to Albanian and foreign
00:06:46media. I tried to find an opportunity to ask him
00:06:50for a comment, but unsuccessfully, but
00:06:53what I was able to hear while he
00:06:57was speaking to foreign media, he said
00:06:59that he really would not comment on something
00:07:03that was pronounced in the name of the people of Kosovo. Namely, he referred to
00:07:07that beginning of the trial when it was said
00:07:10in the name of the people of Kosovo. because it is a Kosovo court,
00:07:14i.e. specialized chambers based in The Hague
00:07:17with international staff, but
00:07:20an institution established in 2015
00:07:24by international agreement and confirmed in the Kosovo
00:07:27Assembly. These are some reactions we could hear that it
00:07:31is not a verdict in the name of the people of Kosovo. As for reactions on the
00:07:34street, we could see dozens of people
00:07:38carrying various symbols
00:07:42gathered in front of the court building in the early morning hours
00:07:46before the verdict was delivered. So, they had symbols
00:07:50of the KLA, Albania, Greater Albania, Kosovo,
00:07:53printed photos of the four
00:07:56KLA leaders and they chanted
00:08:00"KLA", had signs, "Freedom has a name KLA",
00:08:03"heroes of war". However, very quickly, that is, before
00:08:07the verdict was delivered, shortly after nine o'clock, the
00:08:10police asked them to move away and during the pronouncement of the
00:08:14verdict, outside the courthouse were journalistic crews and
00:08:17police, but also gathered citizens, they were 2
00:08:21km away where they followed the pronouncement of the verdict. At that
00:08:24location there were incidents and, I would say,
00:08:28some kind of skirmishes with the police, but very
00:08:30quickly those incidents, that is,
00:08:34the police intervened and dispersed
00:08:37the demonstrators. After that, most of the day
00:08:41was peaceful. We could often see people
00:08:45in the city or vehicles with displayed symbols
00:08:49of the KLA or other Albanian symbols,
00:08:52but most of the day in the afternoon was
00:08:56peaceful.
00:08:58Thank you, that was our Sanja Sovrlić, guest of Danica
00:09:01Vučenić, and behind the news is Professor of International Law
00:09:05at the University of Reading, Marko Milanović, with whom we will
00:09:09discuss the legal, as well as political and social aspects
00:09:12of this verdict in The Hague. We comment on current events in the
00:09:16press review, and our guest is journalist Rade Radovanović, while the topic
00:09:19of the morning is elections, after almost all opposition parties
00:09:23withdrew from the election race in favor of the student list and the referendum
00:09:26atmosphere, the European Serbia list stated that it would
00:09:30not make such a decision, so why? I ask the list leader
00:09:33Zdravko Ponoš, president of the Serbia
00:09:36Center party. We are on until 11, stay with us and let's see what
00:09:40our colleagues are doing in the region. The Sarajevo
00:09:44New Day is hosted by Melika Valihoddžić, and in Zagreb, Nina
00:09:47Kljenak is waiting for you. Good morning, good morning, good morning, Melika,
00:09:51what's most important?
00:09:53Well, reactions from outside to what has been happening in the region
00:09:57in recent days, including of course Bosnia and
00:10:00Herzegovina, are still coming from Brussels,
00:10:04or rather Strasbourg, where the European Parliament is meeting these days, and from
00:10:08Washington. The European Parliament, as we know, opened
00:10:12the question of the glorification of the convicted war criminal
00:10:15Ratko Mladić a few days ago after his funeral in Belgrade with messages
00:10:19that there is no place for the glorification of war criminals in Europe. And
00:10:23yesterday, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen,
00:10:26speaking to MEPs in Strasbourg, reiterated that she was
00:10:30appalled by the scenes of the funeral and stated that such
00:10:34messages are incompatible with European
00:10:36values. All victims of the wars in the former
00:10:39Yugoslavia deserve to be remembered and all
00:10:43their families deserve our sympathy, because that is what
00:10:47we as a union stand for, for truth, justice
00:10:51and respect for our values.
00:10:55At the same time, therefore, the question remains as to what happens after the condemnations
00:10:58and whether the European Union will change its attitude towards
00:11:01our region, what consequences all this may have for Bosnia
00:11:04and Herzegovina. In Washington, meanwhile, a serious debate
00:11:08continues on the new American policy towards Bosnia and Herzegovina.
00:11:11We know that a hearing took place in the American Congress which
00:11:15raised questions about the lifting of sanctions against Milorad Dodik,
00:11:18the future of OHR, state property and American engagement in Bosnia
00:11:22and Herzegovina, with visible
00:11:25differences between the positions of Congress and the Trump
00:11:28administration. And today in the Senate, the hearing of the candidate
00:11:32for the new US Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ronald
00:11:36Johnson, begins. If confirmed, Johnson would be the first American
00:11:40ambassador to our country who is not a career diplomat, and
00:11:43his hearing should show how he views the future
00:11:47policy of Washington towards Bosnia and Herzegovina. We will discuss
00:11:51everything that is currently changing in European policy towards our
00:11:54region directly from Strasbourg with European
00:11:58Parliamentarian Marjan Šarec, and the new American
00:12:01policy towards Bosnia and Herzegovina, the messages coming from Congress and what
00:12:04we can expect today will be analyzed
00:12:07with American analyst Kurt Basiner who
00:12:11will join us in the studio. That's still just a small part
00:12:13of the program, a small part of the content we have prepared for
00:12:17the new day. We actually start it with a conversation with the coach
00:12:20of the Bosnia and Herzegovina national basketball team who is very busy
00:12:24these days, as he also leads the basketball
00:12:27club Bosna, which is proudly returning to the European
00:12:31scene. But of course we also bring an overview of the most important current events.
00:12:35A note to our viewers that there was
00:12:38a fire in a nursing home in Lukavac, where two people
00:12:42were injured. We know that this reminds us of scenes that happened
00:12:45not so long ago in Tuzla, unfortunately. Therefore, we urge
00:12:48everyone to go to the portal
00:12:52n1info.B for the latest information.
00:12:55So, that's Sarajevo's New Day this morning, and Zagreb's
00:12:58Nina, we're dealing with political communication, at least
00:13:01the one in Croatia. Analysts claim that 10 years ago much
00:13:05was unimaginable, insults, sexism, low
00:13:08provocations are raining down. Mostly, communication is devoid of substantive,
00:13:12argumentative debate, it is characterized by
00:13:14conflicts, primitive remarks. What
00:13:18I can tell him is that we are not afraid, I
00:13:21am certainly not the only "mousy," there are many "mousies" in this country. That's all of us
00:13:25who think that people who, for example, plunder healthcare like
00:13:28his minister, or those who let 37 tons
00:13:32of waste be buried in the ground,
00:13:35shouldn't be at the head of institutions. You are either a human or a
00:13:39HDZ member. Let's remember that Prime Minister
00:13:42Plenković was called "führer." And then that
00:13:46we are worse than Nazis. What we stand for is certainly
00:13:50the level of speech in the Croatian Parliament and through debates, no matter
00:13:53how heated they are, they should be argumentative but they should be
00:13:57at a certain level. So, the biggest problem with
00:14:00such communication is the normalization of something
00:14:04that some ten years ago, not to mention
00:14:07even more, was considered completely unacceptable, even
00:14:10scandalous,
00:14:12it is no longer scandalous, and experts claim that divisions in
00:14:16society, intolerance and an atmosphere of violence are influenced
00:14:19precisely by politicians with
00:14:24communication. We follow and
00:14:27analyze in the studio the speech of Ursula von der Leyen, which we broadcast
00:14:31live yesterday on our program, many nice words, few
00:14:34concrete plans, more or less these are analyses,
00:14:38does the European Union have answers to the crises we are facing? It does
00:14:42have an announcement that has already caused a series of reactions, namely, the announcement
00:14:45of Canadian-European rapprochement has provoked a strong response
00:14:49from the White House. Trump threatens the European Union with high
00:14:52tariffs.
00:14:55"now I think it's laughable, look uh, the whole thing with
00:14:58Canada, Canada has been a terrible trade partner,
00:15:01and uh, no, I don't see that, and if they do that, if I
00:15:05think it's at all hostile act, I will put very serious
00:15:09tariffs or stop trading with Europe on many
00:15:12things, so if they do that, if Europe does that with a
00:15:16bad intention, if it's a good intention, that's fine, if it's
00:15:20a bad intention, we'll put very heavy tariffs on
00:15:22Europe.
00:15:25And what is that intention? Canada and the European Union are currently
00:15:28discussing ways that would allow Canadian products, services,
00:15:32and workers involved in strategic supply chains, such as energy, artificial
00:15:35intelligence, defense, and critical minerals, to move
00:15:39freely, which would practically shift the border of the European Union.
00:15:43Here's what Canadian citizens say: We've
00:15:45been very dependent on the United States, deeply integrated,
00:15:49exceedingly so since NAFTA in the
00:15:5290s really has pushed us into a
00:15:55situation where we're vulnerable and that has been exploited,
00:15:59so for us in Europe we need to be taking advantage of,
00:16:03well we've got partners and friends who are democratically
00:16:05aligned, share many of the same values and
00:16:09cultural traditions. I think it's great to develop trade relationships with
00:16:13other countries and other parts of the world. I think we're a little bit behind in developing some
00:16:17of our natural resources to offer these products to sell to them. I think that they would love
00:16:20to have our products if we were able to deliver them like natural gas
00:16:24across the Atlantic. I think that it is a good move. I am
00:16:28a big supporter of being in global connection and I am also
00:16:31not against Americans, I think I'm just against Trump's
00:16:34policy. But I think that...
00:16:42Here, we are also following the so-called diplomatic harvest in which the President
00:16:45of the Republic Zoran Milanović is participating. Will he comment on the recent
00:16:49events in Croatia? Stay with us.
00:16:53Stay for Zagreb and Sarajevo's new day.
00:16:56We start in Belgrade with the weather
00:16:59forecast.
00:17:08A change in weather is coming, the weather alarm has been activated for two Croatian
00:17:12regions, we will find out the details in the weather center where meteorologist
00:17:15Teja Blažević is with us this morning. Teja, good morning, what awaits us? The weather
00:17:19change has already reached parts of Croatia, I must say, according to
00:17:23the latest information, two waterspouts have formed in the northern
00:17:27Adriatic Sea, a strong storm will
00:17:31hit the western coast of Istria in about half an hour,
00:17:34so a warning to all of you who are
00:17:37there. Instabilities are present in western Croatia,
00:17:41inland. You should certainly be careful, given that
00:17:44these showers will intensify in the coming
00:17:47hours, so we expect today
00:17:51unstable conditions elsewhere in Croatia, as well as in
00:17:54Bosnia and Herzegovina. The weather conditions will change
00:17:57significantly compared to, for example, yesterday.
00:18:01All because a frontal disturbance is moving across our regions,
00:18:04destabilizing the atmosphere. So, in Croatia, as I mentioned,
00:18:08we already have instabilities this morning in the west.
00:18:11We expect rain and showers to spread towards
00:18:14central and eastern Croatia's interior.
00:18:18We also expect it to affect northern Dalmatia.
00:18:22We expect the south to remain mostly
00:18:25dry. As for Bosnia and Herzegovina,
00:18:28we also expect instabilities in western Bosnia, parts
00:18:32of central Bosnia, as well as
00:18:34in the north of the country. This will be an area
00:18:38where, as far as Bosnia and Herzegovina is concerned,
00:18:41there will be showers. In the interior
00:18:45of Croatia, a moderate northeast wind has already
00:18:47started blowing, a northerly wind
00:18:51a northwest wind in the east. On the Adriatic, a southerly wind currently
00:18:55dominates, but there will also be strong winds later in the day. As for
00:18:59the Bosnia and Herzegovina region, the wind is weak, for now
00:19:02it is still dominantly southerly, but there will be a change,
00:19:06it will turn, so the wind from the north,
00:19:09which with instabilities
00:19:12can be temporarily strengthened, there can be stormy gusts, so
00:19:16therefore we need to be careful in the coming hours. We heard in
00:19:19the introduction that there is also a weather alarm for two Croatian
00:19:23regions. In Croatia, especially in the area of the northern Adriatic and Gorski Kotar,
00:19:27we expect locally heavy rainfall that can result
00:19:30in flooding, so this change in the coming
00:19:34hours will certainly be our focus.
00:19:37The temperature today will be highest in the area of southern
00:19:41Dalmatia where precipitation will mostly
00:19:44be absent, up to a maximum of 30, elsewhere mostly
00:19:47from about 20, 21 to a maximum of
00:19:5025, more towards the east, because there, especially
00:19:54in the far east, we expect the least precipitation. These
00:19:57are the maximum temperatures in the Bosnia and Herzegovina
00:20:00area, also quite similar values as in
00:20:04Croatia, mostly around twenty.
00:20:0723, so the values will
00:20:10be highest in the south where we expect up to 31, so
00:20:14in the Herzegovina area. It should certainly
00:20:18be noted that tomorrow will bring a frequent occurrence of rain and
00:20:21thunderstorms, and even the first part of Saturday, I
00:20:25would say, especially the morning hours. Only in the second part
00:20:29of Saturday do we expect a gradual calming, and then
00:20:32during Sunday, so a calming
00:20:35of the weather conditions.
00:20:37so that the second part of the weekend will be somewhat warmer, because
00:20:41this change in current that I mentioned will again result in a drop
00:20:45in temperatures during Thursday and
00:20:48Friday. For the end. Once again, a warning about
00:20:52possible dangerous weather conditions, first
00:20:56in the area of Istria. At these moments, we expect
00:20:59the storm to hit western Istria, two
00:21:03waterspouts have already formed, we will of course follow that in the coming hours.
00:21:18Good morning once again to the new day, I'm. Kljenak, together until 11 am.
00:21:22News of the day.
00:21:25What is political communication like in Croatia? Analysts claim that 10
00:21:28years ago, much was unimaginable, insults,
00:21:31sexism, low provocations are raining down. We analyze this in
00:21:34the studio.
00:21:37Ursula von der Leyen's speech, many nice words, few concrete
00:21:41plans, dates and solutions. Does the European Union have answers
00:21:45to the crises we are
00:21:46facing?
00:21:49The announcement of Canadian-European rapprochement provoked a strong
00:21:52response from the White House. Trump threatens the European Union with high
00:21:56tariffs.
00:21:59Zoran Milanović at the diplomatic harvest, will he comment on
00:22:02the events in the country?
00:22:06In the European Parliament, a plenary debate whose direct
00:22:08cause is the Gospić case, we are live in
00:22:11Strasbourg.
00:22:23Let's go to the very beginning of the new day to my colleague Hrvoje Krešić
00:22:26who will join us here in the morning analysis. Hrvoje, good morning.
00:22:30We have been following political communication for years,
00:22:34the way people talk in the Croatian Parliament in front
00:22:38of cameras and behind cameras. It
00:22:40degrades day by day, then
00:22:44they try to us and them, we are not who
00:22:47is who, but the fact is what Gabrijela
00:22:51Kišićek said in our report that some things that were unimaginable
00:22:55just 10, 15 years ago are actually
00:22:58becoming a regular, not exceptional,
00:23:00state.
00:23:03Yes, everything could be summed up with that laconic "everything was better
00:23:07before", but really as far as communication in
00:23:11Croatia is concerned, not just political communication,
00:23:14trends can be observed that, to put it mildly, are perhaps
00:23:18not the best, "As you yourself pointed out, some things
00:23:22that we heard, that we hear, that are more or less regularly
00:23:25mentioned in parliament, by MPs, were
00:23:28once unimaginable. I'm not sure there needs to be a better example than
00:23:32that, so let's not necessarily go back to the last current event, but try
00:23:36to give a broader picture, and one of those moments
00:23:40that will surely be remembered as one
00:23:43of the moments that will be revisited, that is the moment when Gordan
00:23:47Jandroković de facto allowed the greeting
00:23:51"Za dom spremni" to be used in parliament, not just for a moment,
00:23:54but for almost two days it lasted
00:23:57in parliament, he later tried to retract, but
00:24:01I say, I think that moment will be remembered
00:24:04as a certain
00:24:06moment, perhaps not a turning point, but I say something that
00:24:10all those who will analyze communication and the level
00:24:14of communication in parliament will often revisit, that is
00:24:17just one example. All this that
00:24:20you mentioned and all this that we heard from our
00:24:23co-commentators in the past few days clearly
00:24:27shows that this trajectory is slowly but surely
00:24:31going downwards. But I think we need to consider several factors here,
00:24:34not just that politicians have become sharper
00:24:38tongued, but also the fact that they are increasingly
00:24:42fighting for their not even five minutes
00:24:45anymore, but five seconds of attention in the public
00:24:49space, a public space that is no longer limited
00:24:52only to mainstream media, but to social
00:24:56networks, that they go further and further in
00:24:59provocations to attract attention. I know from
00:25:02unofficial conversations with some members of parliament that they often complain,
00:25:06they say, when we talk about some sensible things, serious things, they are
00:25:10boring, only when some excess happens, when someone does
00:25:13something stupid in parliament or attracts attention that way,
00:25:17they get the attention of the media and the public. And I
00:25:20believe that is also one thing to take into account, regardless
00:25:24of both the personal and political responsibility of all actors
00:25:27in the public space. the collapse of the level of
00:25:31communication, which is not just a Croatian specific, it is enough
00:25:34to look at the way in which Uh Donald Trump
00:25:38communicates, and ultimately the way in which it affects the global
00:25:41quality of communication and global political
00:25:45communication, so that it is quite clear that the trend
00:25:48is what it is.
00:25:51Now, what interests us in all of this is, will
00:25:55the President of the Republic say anything, you are going to the so-called
00:25:58diplomatic harvest today, which takes place every year in September,
00:26:02of course. "The President of the Republic will also be there, he
00:26:05spoke about Gospić before that protest, but there are a whole
00:26:09series of topics that he could actually still
00:26:12address,
00:26:16so we will see if that will really happen today. Usually, that diplomatic
00:26:20harvest is an opportunity for the President of the Republic
00:26:23to say something, we will see if that will be the case this time as
00:26:27well, as you pointed out, there are many topics that he missed,
00:26:31obviously completely..." consciously commenting or saying something about them,
00:26:34after the protest in Gospić,
00:26:37he did not speak out, he only offered his support,
00:26:41at the protest was one of his closest associates, Orsak
00:26:45Miljenić. However, as for all other topics that followed,
00:26:48and which concern not only internal, but in a way external politics,
00:26:52for example, I don't know, the funeral of Radko Mladić and everything that
00:26:55happened related to what is happening, after all, in
00:26:59Bosnia and Herzegovina, where elections are slowly but surely
00:27:02approaching and where all kinds of incidents are being recorded, not
00:27:06necessarily between different
00:27:09political parties, different members
00:27:12of different nations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but even
00:27:15within Croatian parties, all kinds of
00:27:18incidents, we know that Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of Zoran
00:27:22Milanović's favorite topics, so he did not speak out on that topic either.
00:27:25In any case, we will be at the diplomatic harvest today, and
00:27:29if there is an opportunity to hear what the president thinks about...
00:27:32many events in the last two three weeks, thank you
00:27:36Hrvoje, it was Hrvoje Krešić.
00:27:48The state of our union is better than ever before, but
00:27:51more uncertain than ever, said the President of the European Commission
00:27:54Ursula von der Leyen in her annual State of the Union address,
00:27:58addressing the issue of energy security. Europe cannot remain
00:28:01an industrial power if energy prices are permanently too high,
00:28:04said the President of the European Commission. After
00:28:08the interruption of Russian gas supply, a new blow was
00:28:11brought by the closing of the Strait of Hormuz, again
00:28:14showing how much the European Union's dependence on imported fossil
00:28:18fuels costs. Brussels sees a solution in greater reliance on its own
00:28:22sources of clean energy and accelerated electrification
00:28:25of Europe.
00:28:28Since the beginning of the conflict.
00:28:32In the Strait of Hormuz, imported fossil fuels
00:28:36cost us an additional 90 billion euros, for which
00:28:39we did not get a single drop more of energy, and therefore
00:28:43we must increase the production of our affordable,
00:28:46domestic and clean energy, whether it is
00:28:50biomethane, nuclear energy, renewables or other, let
00:28:54it be technologically neutral, but all these different sources
00:28:57of energy must achieve the goal of lowering energy prices and increasing
00:29:01our independence. To achieve this independence, we must electrify
00:29:04Europe. Our goal is to double electricity
00:29:08production by 2040.
00:29:10year.
00:29:13And now we go live to Strasbourg, where our reporter Maja Štorbac, who
00:29:17has actually been following the events in
00:29:20Strasbourg for days. The most important thing was certainly the speech that we
00:29:23actually followed live with Maja yesterday in the new
00:29:27day. So now that that
00:29:30part is over, what did you highlight, what are
00:29:34some of the strongest messages that resonated and
00:29:37are being commented on in the
00:29:39parliament itself.
00:29:42Well, Nina, for starters, I will say that it is the last day of the European Parliament session,
00:29:46but that today we expect many more important
00:29:49messages that we will nevertheless touch upon later, to return to your question.
00:29:53Ursula von der Leyen opened her State of the European
00:29:57Union address with a Dickensian sentence about
00:30:00the best and worst of times, which was actually very significant,
00:30:03precisely that paradox was one of the main messages, Europe is, according
00:30:07to her assessment, stronger than ever, but at
00:30:10the same time it is exposed to increasing pressures, this refers
00:30:14to the war in Ukraine, there is also talk about expensive
00:30:17energy, Chinese competition, climate disasters
00:30:20that have affected most of Europe, artificial
00:30:23intelligence, hybrid threats, which have also been
00:30:27mentioned much more in recent days, which is why the
00:30:30political, central political message was... quite clear,
00:30:33Europe must be able to protect itself and protect
00:30:37its interests, this especially applies to
00:30:40the economy, to energy, on which
00:30:43von der Leyen this year placed a much greater emphasis,
00:30:47she announced the completion of the reform of the single
00:30:49market, faster issuance of permits,
00:30:53reduction of administrative burdens, which was also the goal
00:30:57from last year, until 2014.
