00:15:25well, it can happen to anyone. This businessman lost
00:15:29$400,000 to an AI driven crypto scam. I still
00:15:31wake up occasionally in the middle of the night with anxiety where just
00:15:35all of sudden hits me. AI assisted scams are a steep rise
00:15:39according to crime researchers and the FBI. Criminal networks use
00:15:43AI to work across borders and languages, reaching more victims than
00:15:47ever before. Here's what you can learn from Chris's
00:15:51story. I met Eliza through Facebook. Um,
00:15:54November 2024,
00:15:57um, I got a friend request. They
00:15:59began talking. Eventually, Eliza brought up crypto
00:16:03investments and how much money she made with it. She
00:16:06even had a video call. Eliza looked real. Chris
00:16:10was a way for me to grow my retirement
00:16:13fund. I had no plans to stay in it for very
00:16:17long. The platform showed steady profits. Everything seemed
00:16:20legit until Chris mentioned it to her friend. I have this friend, she's a bank
00:16:24manager. She said, "What are you doing, Chris?" I said, "Well, it's
00:16:27part of my investment." She goes, "What are you investing in?" She said,
00:16:31"Chris,
00:16:33you were scammed."
00:16:35the investment platform was fake, the profits were fake, and Chris
00:16:39still doesn't know whether he was talking to a person or an AI. There
00:16:43were real people involved, however. One time a man physically
00:16:46came to Chris's house to collect cash in person. Minutes later, the cash showed up in
00:16:50his investment account. When Chris realized he had been scammed, he sent
00:16:53doorbell camera footage to law enforcement, but so far no luck
00:16:57catching the man. I was planning to retire in like another three or four
00:17:00years. That, unless something changes, that's
00:17:04not going to happen, which is, to say
00:17:08it's discouraging, is probably a gross understatement.
00:17:11This isn't an isolated
00:17:14case. Scammers around the world use the same playbook,
00:17:17create fake identity, build trust, convince someone to
00:17:21invest, then disappear. There are entire
00:17:23scam factories, often based in Southeast Asia. They are known to force
00:17:27human trafficked victims to work in teams to scam people worldwide.
00:17:31Experts estimate that hundreds of thousands of trafficked victims are
00:17:34involved in such. And technology is supercharging
00:17:38this. AI can help criminals write convincing
00:17:42messages in many languages. It can create realistic images, it
00:17:45can clone voices, and it makes fake identities much harder to
00:17:49detect. As large language models, for example, have gotten better
00:17:52and better, you're suddenly globalizing the audience you can
00:17:56communicate with. Some scam factories use specialized software
00:17:59that incorporates leading AI models to automate and scale their
00:18:03operations. A recent investigation found OpenAI's
00:18:06chat GPT and Google's Gemini to be the most used
00:18:09tools, but models from Europe and China were also used. Internet
00:18:13access is another key part of the operation. Starlink is the number
00:18:17one internet service provider in Myanmar where many scam factories are
00:18:20based. Starlink is the way these compounds continue to connect to the
00:18:24internet, and the way that they get around all the other restrictions that are put
00:18:27in place. That raises the question of who carries responsibility
00:18:31here. Is big tech to blame? Most technology
00:18:34companies have guidelines that forbid criminal use of their products, but they
00:18:38also argue that monitoring all user activity would raise privacy
00:18:42concerns. Some companies have taken action. Starlink says it has
00:18:45disabled thousands of internet terminals linked to scam compounds,
00:18:48yet investigators say new sites continue to emerge, using
00:18:52Starlink again. Critics argue that AI companies and internet
00:18:56providers have the technical ability to do more but lack
00:18:58regulatory pressure. The United Kingdom, the European Union,
00:19:02Australia, and Singapore have introduced rules that require
00:19:06companies to better prevent online scams, but regulation takes
00:19:09time. So what can you do right now? If someone you meet online
00:19:13starts talking about investments, be careful. If they pressure you to move
00:19:16money quickly, that's a major red flag. Use reverse
00:19:20image search to check profile photos. Never invest through a link
00:19:23sent by someone you've only met online. Search independently
00:19:27before sending any money, and if something feels off, trust that
00:19:31feeling. You can even paste your chat into an AI tool and ask if it looks like
00:19:34a scam. If you suspect you're being scammed, stop sending money
00:19:38immediately. Save messages and take screenshots of payments.
00:19:42Report the scam even if you might not get your money back, you could prevent others from
00:19:45falling for the same scam. Because as AI continues to evolve, your best
00:19:49defense isn't just better technology. It's knowing how these
00:19:52scams really work. Stay safe.
00:19:56What if your next electricity bill came
00:19:59with a reward for using less power so data centers can use
00:20:03more? Tech giant Google is starting to pay people for small amounts of
00:20:08appliances and EVs, for example. The idea: turn millions of
00:20:11everyday devices into a virtual power plant for data
00:20:15centers. Sounds crazy. Well, as AI use is
00:20:18exploding, data centers need huge amounts of electricity. They leave a massive
00:20:22environmental footprint because of carbon emissions and extensive water use for
00:20:26cooling. Regions in Asia and Latin America are seeing data
00:20:30center boom. They can bring jobs and investment, but
00:20:33also strain power supply and increase water and energy costs. So
00:20:37communities are asking, how do we balance the benefits and the
00:20:41downsides? Let's break it down: Data centers use
00:20:44enormous amounts of electricity. Some of the
00:20:46biggest ones can consume as much power as around 50,000 homes
00:20:50together. And for people living nearby, that could affect energy
00:20:54supply. Take Mumbai, for example. Experts say the data centers could use
00:20:57one-third of the city's electricity by 2030. One
00:21:01idea we've already teased, virtual power plants or VPPs. The
00:21:05concept is simple: rather than one big power source, a VPP
00:21:09connects thousands of smaller ones: home batteries, EV chargers, rooftop
00:21:12solar systems. People get paid to share that energy, helping ease
00:21:16pressure on the grid. Data centers use large amounts of
00:21:20water, mainly to cool their servers. According to a recent United Nations
00:21:24report, data centers could consume over 9 trillion liters of water every year
00:21:27by 2030. That's roughly equivalent to the drinking water needs of
00:21:33year. In some regions like Latin America, growing demand is causing
00:21:37tension. Residents are worried about water use during droughts. In
00:21:41Uruguay, for example, mass protests broke out after a Google

00:22:13submerged 10 kilometers off the coast of Shanghai. It sits 10

00:25:20select corporations to help strengthen cyber defenses. Its hacking
