00:02:18ETHH Zuric University are hoping to do something that's never been done
00:02:22in quite this way before, deliberately triggering a small
00:02:25earthquake,
00:02:28but first there's still'. plenty of work to
00:02:30do.
00:02:33A narrow road leads two and a half kilometers deep into the
00:02:36Gottat. The Bedreto tunnel underneath the mountain
00:02:40range is more than 50 years old and no longer in
00:02:43use, and now it's a perfect natural
00:02:46laboratory. Here the team hopes to make ancient fault
00:02:50deep inside the rock slip ever so
00:02:52slightly.
00:02:54We're here because of this fault zone. You can see the boundary here

00:04:03earthquake as it
00:04:04unfolds.
00:04:08Here's how they plan to trigger it: the fault has
00:04:11slipped naturally before, producing tiny
00:04:15this seemingly humble mineral is one of earthquakes.
00:04:18To reach it, the team has excavated new tunnel branching
00:04:22but table salt accounts for only a off from the bajo lab.
00:04:26From here, they'll pump water through three bore holes directly.

00:10:29One raw material, countless
00:10:31products.
00:10:36In Germany, salt is an important natural resource, and the country
00:10:39produces average of 18 million tons of salt every
00:10:43year.
00:10:45Most of domestic demand is met from these deposits and large
00:10:49amounts of salt are exported every
00:10:51year.
00:10:56Today's salt deposits formed many millions of years
00:10:59ago. Back then a shallow sea
00:11:03covered large parts of central
00:11:05Europe.
00:11:08Shifting tectonic plates created isolated seas and salt
00:11:11lakes. As the water evaporated into the hot
00:11:15arid climate, the dissolved salts
00:11:18crystallized. Eventually layers of salt were buried
00:11:21under sediment and younger rock over and over again.
00:11:26Today salt deposits in the form of sodium chloride stretch beneath
00:11:30northern and central Germany, it's mined and
00:11:33then processed, but not all salt is the
00:11:37same. Sodium chloride is only part of the
00:11:39story. There are also potassium rich salts, the most
00:11:43important raw material for potash fertilizer, but
00:11:49the ore consists of rock salt and other minerals that must be
00:11:52processed and separated.
00:11:56These deposits are concentrated in Central
00:11:59Germany. Potassium is an essential
00:12:03nutrient for plants. That's why potache salts are used around
00:12:07the world to make fertilizers.
00:12:10Potache salts dissolve in the soil, releasing potassium
00:12:14that helps plants use water efficiently and also
00:12:17resist drought, frost and
00:12:19disease, and that in turn increases the
00:12:23quantity and quality of the heart.
00:12:29but potash mining also has a downside, only
00:12:33part of the ore is used, while huge quantities remain as solid
00:12:37and liquid residues.
00:12:40Over the decades, huge waste heaps have built up as some mining
00:12:43sites.
00:12:46The KNS mining company, for example extracts up to 40
00:12:50million tons of potassium rich ore
00:12:52year.
00:12:55After processing, that becomes just 9.5 million tons of
00:12:58marketable products. Most of the mined material ends up
00:13:02as waste. At just one site in central
00:13:06Germany, hundreds of millions of tons of residue are stored in
00:13:10towering heaps, with official approval.
00:13:14Rain washes salt from those heaps, creating waste water
00:13:17that's discharged into the Verra River. Liquid
00:13:21processing residues also end up there.
00:13:25Salt is raw material essential to much of modern
00:13:28life. It helps power our world and reshape
00:13:31it. The question is, at what
00:13:35cost?
00:13:42This river has a problem, and you can measure
00:13:45it.
00:13:47Biologist Andre Bush and his colleagues are searching for life in
00:13:51Nevaga.
00:13:55decades, environmental authorities have been tracking salt levels here
00:13:59and what they're doing to the plants and animals that depend on this
00:14:02river. Under the EU Water Framework
00:14:05directive, rivers are graded a five-point scale. Here at
00:14:09Galstungen, the Vera is currently rated as being in poor environmental
00:14:13condition.
00:14:16One of the biggest reasons is salt. For decades,
00:14:19potash mining has discharged sailing water into the
00:14:23river. The result is salt.
00:14:55gut weed, their abundance is another clear sign of the
00:14:58river's high salt
00:14:59content.
00:15:02By now, things should be different. Under EU
00:15:05rules, rivers and lakes are supposed to be in good condition by
00:15:092027.
00:15:11That's essential for clean drinking water and healthy
00:15:14ecosystems.
00:15:21Further upstream, which isn't affected by the salen discharge.
00:15:47It's a glimpse of what the vega could become if salt levels were much
00:15:48lower.
00:15:53Further downstream though, the discharges are set to
00:15:56continue. The KNS mining company has long faced
00:16:00criticism over the pollution, but says it's working to reduce its

00:16:07One major project is a more environmentally friendly processing
00:16:11system, designed to eliminate liquid production
00:16:14waste. KNS declined our request for an
00:16:18interview. In a written statement, the company
00:16:21said, when disposing of solid
00:16:24residues, we are also continuously minimizing our
00:16:27environmental impact and using state of the art
00:16:30technology.
00:16:35The company's main solution is cover. the waste heaps, layers
00:16:39of plastic liner, soil and vegetation are designed
00:16:42to keep rainwater out, preventing salt from entering the
00:16:46river, but critics question whether it will work in
00:16:50the long run.
00:16:53reducing the river salt pollution is technically difficult and
00:16:57expensive, and the company says the problem can't be eliminated
00:17:01completely. the authorities have repeatedly renewed the
00:17:04discharge permits, although with progressively tighter.
00:17:07limits.
00:17:10Salt levels in Neva have fallen, but the river still
00:17:14has a long way to
00:17:15go.
00:17:19Salt can also have healing properties. Salt
00:17:23brine has been used in spars for
00:17:25centuries.

00:21:56food.
00:21:59the thyroid gland uses it to produce the hormones t3 and
00:22:02t4 which act on almost every cell in the
00:22:05body.
00:22:11these hormones help regulate the cardiovascular system and blood
00:22:15pressure and support cell growth and
00:22:17development. that's why the important for healthy bones
00:22:21and for the development of the brain and nervous
00:22:24system. they also help regulate metabolism, which
00:22:28influences body weight. too little
00:22:31iodine over time can lead to health problems.
00:22:34radiologist melva abell often sees thyroid nodules in her
00:22:38patients. long-term iodine deficiency can be one
00:22:42factor in their development.
00:22:45the thyroid can enlarge and that may contribute to nodules
00:22:48developing over time.
00:23:20but if the thyroid can no longer produce enough hormones,
00:23:23symptoms may include feeling cold, dry
00:23:26skin, hair loss, weight gain
00:23:29as well as low mood and problems with memory and
00:23:32concentration. Over the long term, iodine
00:23:36deficiency can cause what's known as a goider. For
00:23:39adults, the WHO recommends a daily intake of
00:23:42150 micrograms.
00:23:465 grams of iodized salt provides roughly 100%
00:23:59We shouldn't eat too much salt, of course, it can raise blood
00:24:02pressure, but when we do use salt, it should be

00:26:39deficiency may affect a child's brain

00:26:44Studies suggest that children who received too little iodine in the
00:26:48womb may later do less well in areas such as reading
00:26:51comprehension.
