00:08:17this escalation goes far beyond another cross border attack. the
00:08:21hoothies have now also see strategic territory and islands
00:08:25along yemen's red sea coast, strengthening their position near
00:08:29Babal Mander, vital waterway carrying around 12% of global
00:08:32trade. Saudi Arabia and Yemen's internationally recognized government are
00:08:36responding to protect their territory and contain the hoothi advance. Raad
00:08:40is also dealing with the closure of its east-west oil
00:08:43pipeline following separate drone attack. this pipeline has
00:08:47provided an important alternative to the largely blocked straight of her
00:08:50moves. now with both major export routes under pressure,
00:08:54oil prices have risen sharply and fears of a global supply

00:09:46understand the objectives that the hoodis have
00:09:50had under these recent skirmishes, what are they
00:09:54trying to achieve in your point of you Fadi, by renewing missile
00:09:57and drone attacks deep into the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, not the first time, but I'd like to understand
00:10:01why, good evening first of all,
00:10:05and thank you for having me, obviously the hethies
00:10:09see that this is very good moment
00:10:13uh for them to launch attacks on Saudi Arabia
00:10:17given the US-Iran conflict and the alignment between the Huutis
00:10:20and Iran uh so these attacks number one
00:10:24uh gives them the uh uh the target that
00:10:28they want in return of stopping and seeing
00:10:31seasing their attacks from Saudi Arabia to lift as they
00:10:35say it's blockade on their airports and the ports
00:10:39and of course uh the indirect
00:10:43result of this which we can see from the Iranian
00:10:46perspective is that it gives thehran control over another
00:10:50chuck point which is babel mandab uh obviously the strain in this
00:10:55straight of hermus over the last few months because the conflict
00:10:58between the Iran and the US has put pressure on
00:11:02global economy, but also with another truck point being
00:11:06now under the influence, I will say of
00:11:09Iran, now we can see another of
00:11:13course escalation possibly coming ahead. I'm not talking here
00:11:17about the military perspective only, but also adding extra pressure
00:11:20on the global economy, so that changes the calculus in the

00:11:28more influence over the Gulf country and possibly another
00:11:32bargaining chip when it sits on the table, if it sits on the table with the

00:11:43control most of as far as the reports are concerned, most of
00:11:47Yamen's western coast and several islands, how far
00:11:51away are they from controlling all of Babel Mandab?
00:11:56uh well at the moment they also control the perim island which
00:12:00is a strategic location in the middle the babel
00:12:03mandab and i agree with my colleague the timing is
00:12:07very important and when Saudi Arabia and other gulf
00:12:10countries busy in the east due to the conflict with
00:12:14uh Iran ongoing US Iran conflict and they have deployed their
00:12:18military resources to that area to counter
00:12:21against ballistic missiles and drone.
00:12:25now Iran even if indirectly
00:12:29because Iran denies its involvement in the yemen civil war, but
00:12:33there are also media reports that members the IRGC are
00:12:37flowing to Yeman to fight on the side the
00:12:40hoothies, so Iran managed even
00:12:44if indirectly open a new front against the US allies
00:12:48in the region and Saudi Arabia being the prime

00:16:18east-west uh pipeline uh so very
00:16:22much I think the calculus in Saudi Arabia is very very
00:16:26careful very strategic uh Saudi Arabia uh apparently
00:16:30doesn't want to get involved a war uh which is waged
00:16:34by by by Washington uh we know that the capitals in
00:16:38general have been very careful in advising President Trump
00:16:42that there should be diplomatic solution uh because
00:16:45the the the heavy weight of this war and the bill
00:16:49possibly the economy has been paid very much
00:16:53by the gulf countries uh so
00:16:57Saudi Arabia is a front of two really hard
00:17:01options, it has either to move forward and
00:17:04respond militarily to the houties or even to the Iran
00:17:08backed militia in Iraq and that is going escalate
00:17:12things further in the region and possibly we will find
00:17:16that the US-Iran conflict is no more a war
00:17:20between Washington and Tehran as much as it becomes uh
00:17:23evolves to regional war and that is something neither Riyadh
00:17:27nor the other gulf capitals to my understanding want to be
00:17:31in or it has to be moving forward
00:17:34to coordinate its
00:17:37with other capitals and here we can think very much
00:17:41about Pakistan of course and Turkey who
00:17:44are part the Mecca Pact and also Egypt which
00:17:48is very much another important capital in the
00:17:52region and that is possibly why uh Prince Muhammad bin
00:17:56Salman is now in Cairo trying to have some
00:18:00aligned perspectives with with President CC so it's
00:18:03very clear that Saudi Arabia doesn't want
00:18:07escalate any further, it's trying to calculate its
00:18:11response, in other words, even when it's striking back
00:18:15the hotis, riad thinks that its response
00:18:19has to be very measured in order to contain the
00:18:22hotis, but at the same time not to move towards military
00:18:26escalation, which is something neither nor other gulf capitals want
00:18:30to see. it's obviously also from the United States
00:18:33perspective, not in the interest of everyb of everyone in the region.
00:18:38and also not in the interest of Washington
00:18:40escalate or get involved with military escalation before
00:18:44the midterm elections. Obviously President Trump is trying to
00:18:48deescalate with Tehran, trying to send the message that we
00:18:52are trying to apply
00:18:55military and economy pressure, but we are not
00:18:59willing to go to an all-out war again as the first 40 days of this
00:19:03war, so the calculus is is very measured, it's
00:19:07very... and I think Saudi is very much willing
00:19:10to respond militarily, but not in a way
00:19:14escalate further
00:19:16in the region and at the same time send message that it's
00:19:19negotiating not from a weak but from very strong
00:19:22position. The calculus is measured, but let's see for how long it
00:19:26remains measured, I hope it does, because that is in the interest of all
00:19:30the
00:19:31you know the countries in the region concern. Nihart coming to you, I'd like to understand
00:19:35if you look at the battle point. or the conflict points, let's put it that

00:21:04the political message, showing their strong
00:21:08strength to the UN back government, and
00:21:12this could be watershed moment in the Yemani civil
00:21:16war, in my opinion, in the coming weeks, if the advance continues,

00:21:23situation. All right, another important player
00:21:27in all of this fadhi is the United States of America, now
00:21:30although Washington has more or less
00:21:34refused to be part of this conflict

00:22:24but at the same time uh uh Washington wants
00:22:27to show alignment with its partners in the region very much
00:22:31with Saudi Arabia here in this case
00:22:34uh so this is why while the message from Washington that we are
00:22:38not going to
00:22:39uh uh open another frontuh with the Houties uh in this conflict with
00:22:43Iran but we are committed to work with our
00:22:47partners and this is why Stcom uh for example, has
00:22:51sent more than 100 military
00:22:53advisors to discuss the situation with the military
00:22:57leadership in Riyadh, for example, and also we
00:23:01know that the US is sharing intelligence with with the
00:23:05Saudi uh leadership so that they can target
00:23:09specific targets the huties in Yemen, so
00:23:13while there is no direct military involvement from the United
00:23:17States, but there is much coordination and
00:23:20collaboration when it comes to giving
00:23:23advice, sharing military expertise and also sharing
00:23:27intelligence and information with the saudi leadership, so the United
00:23:31States is involved of course, but it's indirectly involved in that
00:23:34situation. however, the
00:23:38military, direct military involvement with the Hithis is something that
00:23:42Washington doesn't want for two reasons. number one, it thinks
00:23:46that a front the American
00:23:50take politics, it's not going to look very good to President Trump to get
00:23:54involved in military confrontation with the Houthies,
00:23:57especially that, as President Trump said, he received a
00:24:01clear message from the Houthies that they are not going to target military interests
00:24:05or even military ships in the red sea. Number two, there is an
00:24:09understanding that the Hithis at this time are going to
00:24:13try to contain their targets, not to
00:24:16actually uh hit any kind of uh... us
00:24:20military bases or interests within the Gulf, so that is
00:24:24something which the United States is very much interested in
00:24:27containing and not going to military escalation, neither with
00:24:31Tahran nor even with the Hothis in Yemen, at this time
00:24:35when President Trump domestically is is facing
00:24:39huge challenge from of course the Americans
00:24:43who are saying that because of of this war they are
00:24:46paying higher energy prices and that this could of
00:24:50course impact the chances the republican party ahead the
00:24:54midterm elections, so all of this is within kind
00:24:58of calculated measures the United States want to take
00:25:01before the midterm escalation, no military escalation, but at the
00:25:05same time of course not to send the
00:25:09message to Iran or the hoothies that
00:25:12the US is letting go with
00:25:15its partners in the region, talking here about Saudi Arabia of course,
00:25:20see what happens, the next couple of days are extremely crucial in

00:26:27got out of control and escalation continues, Saudi Arabia may return
00:26:31to its forces and may form a coalition the willing
00:26:35against hooties to ensure that
00:26:39maritime shipping is unrestricted
00:26:43in in the balble mandev
00:26:45straight, but apart from that i don't
00:26:49expect much from the UNSC because we may have russia and other
00:26:52countries in the UNSC may object a military
00:26:56intervention, but the humanitarian aspect is you
00:27:00mentioned with new more than... 100 thous people
00:27:03internally displaced in yeman requires an urgent
00:27:06action. in this respect, international red
