00:11:15Hello and welcome to the news room with some today we're going to take a look at the important
00:11:18developments taking place starting off with the situation in the middle east with the
00:11:22focus on what is happening between Saudi Arabia. and the rebels
00:11:26in Yemen and also those emerging from within Iraq, it's important to
00:11:29see what really is going on as part of this front
00:11:33that has opened up at the middle east least caused huge concerns for the already
00:11:37ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, but also
00:11:41in terms of what will be the likely response coming in from Saudi
00:11:45Arabia that has vowed for a firm response to Houti attacks
00:11:48and advancements well into uh the areas close to
00:11:52Bauble Mundop and of course with the attacks. that they have made against Saudi
00:11:56Arabia and its maritime blockaid. It's important also to know that there
00:12:00were a comprehensive um area that was covered in terms
00:12:04of security alerts uh within Saudi Arabia, including
00:12:07Macca, and while those were lifted pretty quickly, it was of
00:12:11course cause for concern as to what really raised the alarm bells and how
00:12:15exactly that situation will be handled by Saudi Arabia and
00:12:19what really will be the way forward. We've also seen Saudi Arabia meet with other
00:12:23countries including Egypt also. Of course calls for um
00:12:26more action coming in from the United States have also been put forward, but so
00:12:30far the United States is hesitant to enter into this all
00:12:34out and has of course committed itself to providing
00:12:38intelligence but refraining from moving in more than that, but what does
00:12:42that mean in of course the ways in which it's going to affect this developing
00:12:45situation, but also in terms the United States own
00:12:49relationship with the countries involved and then of course how it then
00:12:52impacts the situation between Iran and the... United States next segment
00:12:56we're going to take a look at what is happening with regards to
00:13:00what the US and particularly its defense forces are
00:13:03facing as result the kind of spending that has been seen as part the
00:13:07war against Iran and it seems that from
00:13:11about 33 billion dollars that were spent on the war so
00:13:15far about 22 billion of those has been spent on
00:13:19munitions alone and it seems that there is huge aspect of strategic
00:13:22stock bds up being less for the United States and of course the
00:13:26ways in which it's going to respond will be important to see how
00:13:30exactly defense forces and manufacturing companies are actually going to cop
00:13:34up. The defense sectory of course is pushing for increasing of
00:13:38weapon production, but what does that mean in terms of how exactly
00:13:42this can actually be delivered and what really will be the response and
00:13:45impact on Iran? And lastly we're also going to be taking
00:13:49a look at the very important situation in terms the
00:13:53developing and ongoing. genocide in Gaza and the West Bank and it
00:13:57seems that uh previously of course the UK had
00:14:01not been vocal about their support for Gaza
00:14:04and of course with the new prime minister coming in there were mixed views about
00:14:08what it is that he's going to do and the kind of stons that he's going to take, but it
00:14:12seems that he has stepped up in terms of
00:14:15outrightly condemming what's going on in Gaza and talking
00:14:19about the support for Gaza and of course has also um
00:14:23come forward with boycot. for certain goods being um
00:14:27imported from Israel and it's important to see what really will
00:14:31be the move forward in this regard, how it affects UK's relationship
00:14:35with Israel and will the UK actually go so far as
00:14:38calling what is happening in Gaza genocide that so far
00:14:42it hasn't still, so we're going to take a look at that at the end
00:14:46the show. to start off with what is in the middle east, we've been joined by
00:14:50professor Lazlow Chedman who's professor at the University of Budapest and
00:14:53senior fellow at Hungarian Institute of International
00:14:57Affairs. We've also been joined with Dr. Matthew Mohammed Ferzani who is
00:15:00professor and chair of history at the northeastern Illunai
00:15:04University. Thank you very much gentlemen for being part the show today. Dr. Matthew,
00:15:08let me begin with you. When we see what is happening in Saudi Arabia
00:15:12and of course with the Huti rebels advancements increasing. We're hearing
00:15:15from Saudi Arabia that they're going to be responding firmly to the
00:15:19advancements that have been made. But what does that mean in terms of
00:15:23how far Saudi Arabia is going to? take this given of course that
00:15:27any response coming in in terms
00:15:30the level or intensity that perhaps is being said in
00:15:34rhetoric will result in an all-out war, but given the... situation
00:15:38at the moment, the kind of advancements and attacks that have been made so far and
00:15:42with of course the areas around babal mandab also being
00:15:45secured by the hooti rebels, what does that mean in terms the very
00:15:49real possibility of that actually
00:15:51happening? well, one the things that we need
00:15:55to take note of immediately is that Saudi Arabia
00:15:59in its decades long history since its
00:16:02inception and sovereignty is that it
00:16:06has never...
00:16:07faced a challenge as
00:16:08it is challenging being challenged right now by the hoothis in Yemen,
00:16:12that's very important to note, that means that historically it hasn't had the
00:16:16opportunity to test to see if it can defense itself
00:16:20without the help of others and also it
00:16:23means that it puts Saudi Arabia a very
00:16:27difficult situation because it does have access to the
00:16:31Persian gulf, hence its oil has to go
00:16:34through straight of Hormus which is blocked by Iran. and
00:16:38then it does have access to the Red Sea, which means
00:16:42it needs for its ships to go through Babel Mandab, as you
00:16:45mentioned, the Sweez is open and will be open for the time
00:16:49being, so all these things we are in uncharted
00:16:53territory right now for crown prince
00:16:57bin Salman right now, what it means for Iran is
00:17:00that Iran had said from before that it would
00:17:04ask its hoothi allies in
00:17:07Yemen to do anything to help
00:17:11Iranians in their fight against the Americans and
00:17:15essentially the Israelis since February 28th, and this
00:17:19rhetoric is not new, this goes back many, many
00:17:22years as the Iranians were helping the Shiites
00:17:26and the Houtis in Yemen, so historically that's been
00:17:30going on for at least 20 some of years, it's nothing new,
00:17:33but because the American Israeli war that... had
00:17:37started on February 28th, now we're a very realistic
00:17:41situation uh, if we can say um that
00:17:45Saudi Arabia has to make decision to come down really hard
00:17:48and respond to the
00:17:52destruction of its oil, the 750 mile oil pipe
00:17:56that was going to the Red Sea, which is its only outlet
00:18:00to get its oil out, if they don't respond then it
00:18:04would be anybody's guess how the next round of
00:18:07fighting from Hutis against the Saudis would turn out,
00:18:11so I'm guessing that um Saudi Arabia would
00:18:15have to respond hard, but at the same time it cannot
00:18:19do this by itself, it's going to have to need
00:18:21to ask for allies and that's where
00:18:25the Mecca agreement, the defense pact that was recently signed
00:18:29by Pakistan by Turkey and by Saudi
00:18:32Arabia, we just have to see what these other nations would decide and whether
00:18:36or not if someone would ask them to come uh to
00:18:40help in some shape or fashion, which puts
00:18:43everything under extreme
00:18:47um difficulty and challenge for everybody if anybody wants this war to be
00:18:51over anytime soon. right, professor
00:18:55lasl, when we're looking at these developments taking place, there is of course
00:18:59lot of concern as to how um Saudi Arabia will respond, but
00:19:03also how other countries are going to be responding to it, there is...
00:19:07of course uh what Saudi Arabia looks towards for
00:19:11support from the United States and while it has committed to
00:19:15supporting in terms of intelligence sharing it hasn't really of course
00:19:19stepped up in terms of any um more active involvement perhaps
00:19:22in the situation and while that may be of course understandable but
00:19:26what really do you think is the current stance that the US is
00:19:30taking and what is it that it's likely going to take if the situation
00:19:34worsens? thanks for having me
00:19:38invited? yeah, that's a very good point. i think at this point the
00:19:41United States told that there is an
00:19:45existing cease fire between the United States and the Houti
00:19:49movement, and it rejected to enter in the war. however,
00:19:53it can change in the upcoming days depending on
00:19:56the situation, unfolding situation in
00:20:00the Yemani crisis, and especially I would expect that in the
00:20:04upcoming days there's going to be more escalation. to be seen
00:20:08in this conflict, especially as professor mentioned
00:20:12that Saudi Arabia will respond and and
00:20:16definitely it will going escalate uh the
00:20:18crisis and and at
00:20:21the you know that Saudi is criticizing with other Gulf states, the
00:20:25United States that the Washington reluctant to
00:20:28defend them, especially from the Iranian uh
00:20:32drone and rock missilees attacks and here we have another
00:20:36conflict uh which definitely Saudi Arabia would like
00:20:39escape from, the same case is for Washington, I
00:20:43think, especially getting closer to the midterm
00:20:46elections, with increasing uh...
00:20:50prices in the the United States, I
00:20:53think the hoouti escalation is not a good
00:20:57opportunity to implement the exit strategy the Trump
00:21:00administration, so definitely in the upcoming days US
00:21:03position can change a bit depending on the
00:21:07situation. Right, Dr. Matthew,
00:21:11the situation of course between the US and Iran is still
00:21:14continuing, and while there may be hopes of course for the two
00:21:18sides to get on the negotiating tables. so far we haven't seen that happening, what
00:21:22is the situation between Saudi Arabia and the rubbles do
00:21:26for the situation, how does it embalden Iran's position
00:21:30if at all, and what will any sort of action coming in from Saudi
00:21:33Arabia due to the USS's position and the kind of
00:21:37actions it's willing to take in the middle
00:21:39east? well, as you
00:21:42know, the bricks nations and their invited guests
00:21:45nation guests that were in New Delhi last
00:21:49week, "there was a lot of talk between
00:21:53Persian Golf Arab countries and Iran and the plan was
00:21:57for all them to meet the Persian Golf Arab states and Iran to
00:22:00meet being hosted by Oman to work out
00:22:04the details of how it would be for this straight to be open
00:22:08and controlled by Oman from the south and Iran from the north
00:22:12and apparently Saudi Arabia due to the difficulties that is
00:22:15having with his Yemini neighbors to the
00:22:18south" had to cancel and ask for an extension of
00:22:22time, which the Omanis have abided by,
00:22:26because they want this agreement to be signed apparently by all
00:22:30the person, golf arab states including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait,
00:22:33Iraq, Bahrain, Qatar and
00:22:37Emarat, so in that
00:22:39sense, Iranians right now
00:22:43are a good position because apparently they have convinced and they have come
00:22:47to a understanding with the Omanis and how
00:22:50to control the flow of oil, however the
00:22:54United States keeps objecting to any kind of
00:22:58arrangement that would be made,
00:23:02and the public is not yet preview to the details of that. As far as
00:23:06Saudi Arabia is concerned, as I mentioned earlier and our other
00:23:10guest is agreeing, Saudi Arabia because it's
00:23:13been sucked into this war with with
00:23:17Yemen and Hutis, whether... the Iranians are helping or not,
00:23:21but like with in all likelihood Iran is helping with
00:23:25a variety of ways, they're going to have to address this
00:23:28situation, and I don't see any other way to address the
00:23:32situation militarily other than going and making a
00:23:36deal with other Persian gulf states with
00:23:39Iran and opening the straight and putting an end to this
00:23:43absolutely nonsensical war that started for no
00:23:46reason, right? um... Professor
00:23:50Laslu, when we're looking at the which Bobble Mandap is
00:23:54getting affected, and of course the straight of removes is of
00:23:57course something that has been uncertain since quite a few
00:24:01months now and since the beginning the conflict, when we look
00:24:04at the kind of impact that the situation Bubble Bundab has also
00:24:08created and also with the very important east-west pipeline of
00:24:12Saudi Arabia being affected, what does that mean in
00:24:15terms
00:24:17the global oil supply that is affected, but not just... for Saudi Arabia, for
00:24:21the rest the Middle East and the world indeed, the ways in which this is
00:24:24impacting different countries, how do you think that they're going to respond given that their
00:24:28stakes are also high in this situation? and that's a very
00:24:32good question, because it's not just about Saudi Arabia, but for the
00:24:36United Arab Emirates, which is a competitor the Saudis
00:24:40especially in the Yemen, the last couple of months, but
00:24:44this conflict can bring the two countries together, because for
00:24:48instance Saudi Arabia impacted by the eastwest pipeline and the yambu
00:24:52port which today stopped oil loading and oil
00:24:55shipment, but on the other hand, baubel mandab is still
00:24:59open at the moment and we are unsure about the
00:25:02future of whether the hooties would like to
00:25:06disrupt the the freedom of navigation there, but for the United
00:25:10Arab Emirates, more the port infrastructure
00:25:13matters, and especially as the hoot is getting
00:25:16closer to the local allies are...
00:25:20movements in close to the balm
00:25:23mandab, that's very interesting that it can bring together
00:25:27several states and cooperate on the hoot
00:25:30issues, because probably today they they will see it
00:25:34as a common enemy, this is true for Egypt as
00:25:37well, especially there is an unfortunately
00:25:41an opportunity to decrease the suas canal income for
00:25:45Egypt which is disastrous for Egypt's economy, so that's
00:25:49why muhammad b Salman today, the chrome prince of Saudi
00:25:52Arabia, had a meeting with Abdul Fattah Sis
00:25:56in Egypt, and even there are many talks that
00:26:00probably Israel can join - the war,
00:26:03which is very sensitive issue of course for the Saudis,
00:26:07because they wouldn't like to see themselves part of
00:26:10same war against the movement, but however, there is
00:26:14a common security challenge for all the states mentioned
00:26:18here. right, and professor lasto,
00:26:21the maritime coalition that was proposed by
00:26:25Saudi Arabia did get some good responses initially, but given the current
00:26:29situation, do you think that any tangible action will be?
00:26:32collectively in terms of any maritime
00:26:35defense? now definitely that's very
00:26:39interesting as today, united arab emirates is not part of
00:26:43this, and as it was said that there is the mecca
00:26:46agreement as well, so Saudi is expecting other countries to
00:26:50join, but what really does it mean in reality? this is a
00:26:53question, because until today that the hoouti is just attacking the
00:26:57Saudi ships, however not disrupting
00:27:01today the... other shipment movements and i
00:27:05think hootis have their own strategic calculation
00:27:09and they probably would like to see the balbel mandab
00:27:12open for the upcoming months, of course it depends
00:27:15on hormos and iran as well, but with their own
00:27:19strategic calculations, probably they are just playing a long-term
00:27:23game uh to be at the most important stakeholder in
00:27:27the balbel mandab and definitely this is another
00:27:31situation so if port infrastructure is going to be attacked,
00:27:35definitely other countries can join
00:27:38as well, especially to defend the maritime
00:27:42shipping roots, because it's not just about Saudi
00:27:45Arabia, but about Oman and other countries, but Toman
00:27:49definitely is more neutral in the Middle East than
00:27:52others. Right, thank you very much, professor Lasl Chichman for
00:27:56joining us and being a part the show. Dr. Matthew, when we're looking at
00:28:00the situation, especially with the... kind of elements
00:28:04also existing within Iraq, how do you think that the governments in
00:28:07both Iraq and Yemen are going to be responding to the situation, of course
00:28:11Yemen has talked about increased response, of course it has acted
00:28:15in ways against the Huti rebels as well, but
00:28:18how how effective do you think these responses will be and
00:28:22what will be Saudi Arabia's action or support that it
00:28:26can extend in order to ensure that that does eventually happen and with
00:28:30Iraq, where do you think that the government?
00:28:32would stand? well, the
00:28:35responses, would have to be quite measured,
00:28:39but at the same time, quite decisive, if Saudi Arabia
00:28:43wants to
00:28:44win this situation, and we just
00:28:46have to wait and see what had what can happen. as far as
00:28:50Iraq is concerned, apparently the latest attacks, some them
00:28:54were launched from inside, the sovereign territory
00:28:58of Iraq, and that puts Iraq a very difficult situation,
00:29:02because... "United States is not in war with Iraq, it's in war with Iran,
00:29:05but at the same time Iran has incredible influence
00:29:09visavy its friends in Iraq, it has had that
00:29:13since the 2003 American invasion and
00:29:17overthrowing of the uh governor Saddam Hussein at that
00:29:21time, so we just have to wait and see as far as any immediate
00:29:24changes, I don't foresee any changes to take place, as far as
00:29:28Iraq's situation is concerned, I think Iran..." will
00:29:32continue to not only
00:29:35influence the regional politics, especially with Saudi
00:29:39Arabia, because I think Iran wants to put a tremendous amount of
00:29:43pressure on Saudi Arabia to pressure the United States
00:29:47in essence to end the war and
00:29:50hence the support for Iraq and hence the support for Hutis
00:29:54will continue for forceable future unless something
00:29:58totally drastic happens and Iran would stop that
00:30:02right? Professor Maty, we also seen that there was a meeting that
00:30:05was scheduled to take place in Romania, they are with the gulf states also in
00:30:08presence, which is canceled and what the Umani authorities have said on Saudi
00:30:12Arabia's request, what does that show in terms the current
00:30:15response uh towards what is happening in the straight by the
00:30:19Gulf states and Saudi Arabia, even a man who earlier was very close to
