00:00:47Greenland has strongly warned US against any drilling its
00:00:50territory following reports an
00:00:52in American company is preparing to explore for
00:00:55of oil in the Arctic Island. It's in fact a company out of uh Texas
00:00:58and it's just more than report that this american company is preparing to explore, in fact
00:01:02locals in that
00:01:03of small island, we'll get into the uh uh specifics about the island uh, the locals
00:01:07just said that they've seen in the past few days a number of ships carrying
00:01:11dozens of containers with said equipment
00:01:15on board so this morthen just
00:01:16a report, it's unfolding in real time, joining us for this conversation is
00:01:20Marcia Baker, economic expert out of Washington DC and Greg
00:01:24Simons, professor of journalism a Daffodil
00:01:27of international university from Dhaka, uh hello to the both. and a pleasure to have you on
00:01:31the program, marcia, we're going to start with you, your initial thoughts, we've heard lot of
00:01:34speculation, the Donald
00:01:36of Trump, all the conjecture, oh we're going to take in - annex Greenland, it's vital
00:01:40for our national security, but this is kind of a blow below the belt cuz it seemed
00:01:44like he was kind of letting go that deal for a while, but apparently the CEO
00:01:48of this company is in Trump's inner circle and here he is trying
00:01:51to basically okey doke through the back door and get a
00:01:56a Greenland soil and explore for oil, it's nuts.
00:02:01Well, I think what you see is an
00:02:04of expression
00:02:04of the kind of imperialist foreign
00:02:08policy, not diplomacy foreign policy, not
00:02:11economic foreign policy,
00:02:14in that's characteristic of both President Trump's
00:02:17personality as well as the current
00:02:21governing outlook in Washington. Now, what you
00:02:24say about the oil company from Texas, I have no
00:02:28more
00:02:29of inside information. but the president Trump
00:02:33himself,
00:02:33I think, last week a podcast called real
00:02:37America
00:02:39in voice repeated what we know to be
00:02:42his claim that Greenland ought to be part
00:02:46of the United
00:02:47in States, which he said in Turkey at
00:02:51of the at the recent summit, um,
00:02:55and so he occasionally repeats
00:02:59this: and
00:03:01a it's uh in many respects of course
00:03:04it's completely
00:03:07of wrong,
00:03:07a but it's part
00:03:09of of the kind of thing he does, it's part
00:03:10of the northern version, I guess you could say, of
00:03:14what's called the shield
00:03:16of the Americas, which in March this year
00:03:20was announced by the Trump administration regarding imperialist
00:03:24rights to South America, so that's I think how to
00:03:27look at it from the top. Good stuff, thank you,
00:03:31Mr. Faker, and let me give our viewers a quick uh, recap, or not recap,
00:03:35but quick quick summary
00:03:37of the details involved here before we swing over to Greg Simons, um, the
00:03:41executives at Greenland Energy, that's the name of this company out of Texas,
00:03:45uh, they claim that there's at least a trillion dollars worth
00:03:49of crude beneath Jameson Land region, it's a
00:03:52small island there, part of Greenland,
00:03:55of um, that's over 30 billion barrels of
00:03:59of crude and...
00:04:00they announced plans to spend some $60 million in drilling two wells there to
00:04:03find out and all the greenland stop the issuing new licenses that
00:04:06says uh with respect to oil back in
00:04:092021 a UK company called
00:04:1380 mile had secured exploration rights in jamesson land that's the
00:04:16only company that was able to do that was out
00:04:19of the uk and they have nothing to do with this texas company and the funny thing here
00:04:23greg i'm going
00:04:24to come to you now greenland energy has retained dr phil of all people phil
00:04:28mcgraw a prominent right-wing former chat show host who served on Trump's
00:04:32religious freedom
00:04:33a commission to make documentary series that will capture the mission
00:04:36of the modern day wild catters it says now Larry Swetz Greenland's
00:04:39energy's a chair and big shareholder appears to enjoy access to
00:04:43Trump circle he has said the oil project though is quote
00:04:47not related to American annexation and quote Greg lot to
00:04:51unpack here bud your initial
00:04:55of thoughts
00:04:56a well I mean it's a sharad what you have with
00:05:00Trump at the moment, because he's playing lot of different
00:05:03games simultaneously, even if he has
00:05:07very restricted and limited mental
00:05:10intelligence, he tries. to play this shell
00:05:13game, so he he tried to play his hand with
00:05:17Iran,
00:05:19failed,
00:05:24one uh, so he thinks in the short term with Venezuela, so
00:05:28he's just trying different things and I think
00:05:31Greenland is is backup for him uh, because this
00:05:35gives a attempt in Trump's mind
00:05:39to save his loss of face. about his
00:05:43humiliating uh defeat with Iran
00:05:46and I mean it's been wonderfully
00:05:49humiliating because he's managed to achieve nothing that
00:05:53he and his masters uh BB Netanyahu
00:05:57and so forth set out to do
00:05:59so it seems and of course
00:06:03he's perpetually uh what do you say
00:06:07captivated by shiny objects uh
00:06:10so he's just... gross and grossed
00:06:13in this idea of making money for him and his friends
00:06:17and so Greenland as noted it might
00:06:21have lot of potential there for them
00:06:24to and rip off and of
00:06:28course it's not protected,
00:06:31mean Denmark is not a
00:06:35credible power to actually resist us if
00:06:38it decides to do so. the fact that he said it again.
00:06:42recently uh means that he's still looking for
00:06:46this so-called dignified exit from Iran and
00:06:50to show what's left of his supporters uh that
00:06:54he gives
00:06:56them okay
00:07:00Greg Greg it seems like we're having
00:07:04greg we're having we're having connectivity issues
00:07:06this is about trump great can you hear me and
00:07:10it's about his brand and
00:07:13image, yes, I hear you, okay, we're having, I hear you loud and
00:07:17clear, can you can you log off and log back on, coordinate with our coordinator because we're
00:07:21having a technical uh issues, making out exactly what you're saying, we're only
00:07:25getting about 60, 70% of what your your statements there, so if you
00:07:28can, see if you could rectify that, I'm going to go to marcia back to Marcia real quick,
00:07:32Marcia, do you buy it, the uh ceo of this uh company greenland
00:07:36energy said this is no way related to American annexation, but
00:07:39also he sent few representatives the company.
00:07:42out there to Jameson Land to a community meeting back in June and they said they
00:07:46told the locals they had permission to drill there and then later when
00:07:50a locals checked with the government the government said no they don't they do not we
00:07:53don't they came there and told you guys this the the the CEO said our
00:07:57enthusiasm for the project let us to communicate a way that created
00:08:01confusion uh are you buying this that their uh
00:08:05little mission here has nothing to do with America's
00:08:07annexation well there
00:08:10i think that what you have is reflex
00:08:14reaction in Washington by the Trump
00:08:17administration, the president might say
00:08:21anything right or wrong and even change it the next
00:08:25day, so that
00:08:28the fact of this claim
00:08:32by any Texan organization that has the
00:08:36right is just part of this kind of fictional
00:08:39reflex reaction. I can't say... "I do not
00:08:43have on the ground intelligence
00:08:46about what they are shipping there to Greenland, if they're
00:08:50going to explore, but the but the fact that President
00:08:54Trump has reiterated that Greenland
00:08:57belongs to the United States, even in
00:09:00the July 31st blog show,
00:09:04and recently, is just part of
00:09:07this debased foreign policy
00:09:11approach." of, as I called it, an imperialist
00:09:15foreign policy, not economics, not economics of oil.
00:09:19The United States in reality, of course,
00:09:23has onshore oil, onshore
00:09:26gas, tremendous resources in
00:09:29Alaska, there's no need for
00:09:32this, any, there's no
00:09:36basis for needing anything in
00:09:39Greelland in the way of fossil.
00:09:42fuels, what it is is clash
00:09:46of this approach of threatening
00:09:49to um acquire and simply
00:09:53take Greenland in in contradiction to
00:09:57the way Russia is developing northern sea
00:09:59route, China is working in the area
00:10:03on research and using the northern sear
00:10:07root, so you have clash of foreign
00:10:10policy shown,
00:10:12in the greenland question right,
00:10:16and marcia, you mentioned debase foreign policy, let's talk about the
00:10:20debates foreign policy out of DC, especially with the Trump administration,
00:10:24Trump speaks. of annexation of Greenland, it gets
00:10:28his NATO allies uh furious and
00:10:32then he goes after them and he's done that even in his term first term and their lack of
00:10:36funding when it comes to the member states funding uh
00:10:39NATO adequately saying that the US is basically making up too much the brunt
00:10:43the funding for a NATO and then he attacks through
00:10:47the these terrif wars all uh America's longstanding
00:10:50European allies and then when he attacks Iran he asks for their help
00:10:54and... Iran or at least trying to rest control the straight of hormose, he wants the
00:10:58Europeans involved in that endeavor, and it's obvious that
00:11:02come they gave him a go cold shoulder uh when he asked him for help,
00:11:05and uh this Donald Trump's policy seems all over the place, it's like
00:11:09one minute, he wants to annex parts of Europe and then he criticizes and he
00:11:13carries these trade wars against them, next minute he wants some help
00:11:17a in new about of adventurism, is this man
00:11:20confused? well you have
00:11:23correctly just... described the
00:11:27character the failing policy out of Washington
00:11:31DC right now, whether it is trade,
00:11:34whether it is um foreign relations based
00:11:38on respect for sovereignty, it
00:11:41flip-fops one day to the next, but
00:11:45it in Washington terms it has taken
00:11:48a very bad turn for the worst, as you will
00:11:52know um regarding. outright
00:11:55warfare in southwest Asia, but
00:11:59also the uh the tempo
00:12:03in Washington is to join with the
00:12:06crazy European leader saying Russia is going
00:12:10to soon invade Europe, invade
00:12:13Poland, invade Lithuania or the other Baltic
00:12:17states. Yesterday in the United States Senate
00:12:21a vote was taken to approve.
00:12:25news ferocious sanctions on Russia. This is
00:12:29part the debased policy. It it it has
00:12:32not passed the House of Representatives, which will not convene
00:12:36again to September, but we are a very extreme
00:12:40state of danger, because this has all been
00:12:44accompanied by discussions of
00:12:47potential local technical nuclear war,
00:12:51completely dangerous. So, fortunately,
00:12:55inside the United States, I can tell you
00:12:59there are more voices and more
00:13:02expressions of opposition to the
00:13:05insanity in Washington DC,
00:13:08so the um the that is
00:13:12the strategic danger, and on the
00:13:16economic side, you asked about
00:13:20Greenland,
00:13:21it is crazy what Washington is doing.
00:13:25guarding other outlying pieces
00:13:29of land in the Americas, Puerto Rico,
00:13:32for example, territory the United States now
00:13:36does has much of its water shut
00:13:39off, it is ratening water, it
00:13:43its electricity is in trouble, Washington is
00:13:47threatening Cuba, so
00:13:50the disgrace of Washington
00:13:54right now, is extreme and the
00:13:57voices inside the United States calling for an
00:14:01alternative, if they call loud enough,
00:14:05this is very important for the future of humanity,
00:14:09and time and again uh Marcia, you've heard Donald Trump say that,
00:14:12oh, if we take uh Greenland and annex it, it's really good for
00:14:15U.S. national security, okay, it brings you few hundred miles closer to
00:14:19Russia, and perhaps now uh, Iran or anyone else he has his eyes on
00:14:23in the future on this side the world. but uh in essence you're going to for
00:14:27those few hundred miles getting closer to your uh adversaries, well
00:14:31guess what, you're going to for that one, I mean aren't you for that one step,
00:14:35gaining that one step, losing three or four steps if you lose your European partners
00:14:39in the process, how does that benefit us foreign policy and its
00:14:43security? there's no benefit
00:14:46whatsoever in being a bully and saying we'll
00:14:50take over greenland in order to in fact
00:14:53create as you said, more confrontation with Europe, more
00:14:57confrontation with China, more confrontation with
00:15:01Russia, this is a disgrace and
00:15:05it's debased, and I want to contrast
00:15:08that to the traditional American
00:15:12foreign policy going back, a
00:15:16generation or hundred years, when for
00:15:19example, the US collaborated in what was
00:15:23called the Arctic Council. which still
00:15:25exists, and the Alaska,
00:15:29the governor there who's famous, he died, Walter Hickle
00:15:33collaborated with Russia, collaborated with China.
00:15:37collaborated with the Scandinavian northern countries
00:15:41the Arctic. In fact, Walter
00:15:44Hickle in Alaska wanted a bridge between
00:15:48Russia, Chikotka, it was called it is, and
00:15:52Alaska,
00:15:53and this was raised when President Trump and Putin
00:15:57met in Alaska, but the war crazies
00:16:00of Europe and Washington combined
00:16:04are doing everything to oppose this. so
00:16:08Greenland is just one of those expressions, one
00:16:12of those pawns the crazy side the
00:16:15United States, as opposed to the traditional
00:16:19pro-development, mutual interest
00:16:22side that it can exist again
00:16:25if we here in the United States, I assure you
00:16:29with Europe too, are trying to shift back
00:16:33to to get that beneficial side.
00:16:38"I, I can be explicit, there is,
00:16:41um, an international petition
00:16:45that western leaders should call a peace
00:16:48conference immediately, like the Pope, the
00:16:52Catholic leader in Rome could call the peace
00:16:55conference. This has, this is getting
00:16:59lot of momentum inside the United States,
00:17:03because one the bishops in New Mexico
00:17:06named.
00:17:07are bishop the wester is of this viewpoint in the
00:17:11past, so we are a very critical
00:17:15point, and the question of raising greenland
00:17:19as another target for us annexation
00:17:23just makes the point that Washington is crazy as well as
00:17:26immoral. Greg, it seems like
00:17:31Europeans we have you back, Mr. Greg Simon, so why quiet on this? It's not a developing story, I mean just in the
00:17:35past three weeks to a month, this is bef. for all the
00:17:39uh uh the rhetorics involving this this company out of
00:17:42Texas or just over the last three weeks they've moved dozens of
00:17:46containers onto this island the Jamesson land and also by mid
00:17:50September they're planning on sending another 300 uh uh
00:17:53containers involving hardware to start drilling um but throughout
00:17:57this entire time and and Miss Baker say that she like to
00:18:01see emergency peace summit put together to try to address
00:18:05Donald Trump's adventurism and his dangers to... world community, you have the Europeans
00:18:09here awfully quiet, not NATO is saying a word about this, not the European
00:18:12Union,
00:18:13why
00:18:18peace, yeah, this peace submit is
00:18:22just, yeah, how is it going to work would be
00:18:26the question, because one the points about
00:18:29peace, even if you do not like each other, you should be
00:18:33able to uh actually trust one another.
00:18:38clearly when you
00:18:40have uh
00:18:43countries the global north especially the US
00:18:47but also the European countries
00:18:49uh there is no trust and you're talking peace uh
00:18:53there's been a long history of perfedy uh by
00:18:57especially by the US so this point
00:19:01of trying to bring about some kind of peace is
00:19:05moved and it's because
00:19:09the the US, especially under Trump, but of course even before
00:19:13Trump came, this was a problem, they they
00:19:16would talk one thing uh, and do
00:19:20something else, so there's been a long
00:19:24history of this dissonance between what they
00:19:28say and what they do, and this has only got worse,
00:19:31and I think one the underlying reasons for this
00:19:35is that Pax Americana. is unfolding, it's
00:19:39collapsing, and when an empire goes into
00:19:42decline uh, it it gets more
00:19:46desperate, it gets more reckless in terms
00:19:50of its thinking and its behavior, it does not want to give
00:19:53up the privileges of empire, mean empires
00:19:57in the past have been doing this, whether it's the british empire, but
00:20:01now in particular we see
00:20:04the the same pattern unfolding with Pax Amerikana.
00:20:07so people like talk peace, but what you what
00:20:11you do see is that there is a certain amount of
00:20:15hedging and the hedging is not only by
00:20:19targets and opponents
00:20:22of us, but even its allies
00:20:26at the moment, so this whole whole system is
00:20:30unfolding, which yeah, mean it makes the talk the idea
00:20:34of sustainable or feasible piece. is
00:20:37increasingly difficult and marcia, you want to
00:20:41get, can i get your take on that too, because uh, there's a grossly
00:20:45illegal, blatantly illegal drilling project, illegal because obviously they're moving
00:20:49forward without greenland's approval to come onto their soil and drill
00:20:53for uh oil um and you have NATO and European awfully quiet,
00:20:57how do we how can we make sense of that? I'll give you two
00:21:01points, one is that
00:21:04the Washington in in moving on
00:21:08Greenland in this way about oil is very
00:21:12blatant,
00:21:13they aren't uh duplicitus, look what they're doing in
00:21:16Venezuela, moved in, kept the
00:21:20president and are now selling Venezuelas
00:21:23oil to American and other companies
00:21:27benefit, so this is
00:21:30blatant, blatantly criminal, immoral, everything
00:21:34you want to say about it,
00:21:37so it's not sneaky, it's in your face,
00:21:41and and it's typical that aside,
00:21:44many the European leaders themselves are
00:21:48equally. comprehensible, they do not have
00:21:52public support,
00:21:54in France, in
00:21:58Germany, Britain
00:22:00has changed its leaders so often in the last couple years, you
00:22:03can't keep track, because these
00:22:06individuals, whatever they do or don't say about
00:22:10Greenland, are lying and
00:22:12mobilizing for armment, for example
00:22:16against Russia saying that Russia is ready to...
00:22:20Europe a lie, not true, so
00:22:24you shouldn't expect anything about the
00:22:27leadership elite class of Europe, I
00:22:31will say
00:22:31there are other voices that have been in
00:22:35office or are still strong, that are speaking
00:22:38out to stop this madness, one is General
00:22:42Harold Kuyot retired in Germany who was
00:22:46formerly top German military. fair
00:22:50leader and also in NATO in Brussels, he had
00:22:53top position. Another one is Admiral
00:22:57Vad, VAD in Germany, he is speaking
00:23:00out in many locations
00:23:03currently saying, this is insane
00:23:07to say, to justify what Europe is doing,
00:23:11claiming that Russia is going to invade europe, so you have
00:23:15to see that the the European elite
00:23:19currently in office has less than 10
00:23:225% support uh people like I
00:23:26mentioned merts, so we we are living a
00:23:29very rapidly shifting situation in
00:23:33which people in the west calling out
00:23:36for stopping the war in Iran, stopping
00:23:39Netanyahu, stopping what Trump is doing, could
00:23:43make all the difference in history. I am optimistic on
00:23:47principle, although I think it's very dangerous. And thank you
