00:02:48Good evening, in tonight's a spotlight, we turn to the brick summit
00:02:52in New Delhi where member states have unanimously adopted a
00:02:56declaration challenging unilateralism sanctions.
00:03:00and the existing imbalance in global governance. the block has
00:03:04expressed serious concern over attacks on civilian
00:03:07of infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities, while demanding
00:03:11greater protection for Palestinians and an end to the
00:03:14unlawful occupation of palestinian
00:03:17of territories. it has also warned against the far reaching consequences of
00:03:21unilateral coersive measures and economic sanctions. but
00:03:25Iran has gone further calling on bricks to take concrete
00:03:29me and operate... steps against unilateral sanctions, expand
00:03:33trade national currencies and develop independent payment
00:03:36mechanisms. Terron is also pushing for reforms to
00:03:39international institutions, including the United Nations
00:03:43Security Council and the global financial system,
00:03:47so
00:03:47is bricks gradually becoming an alternative poll
00:03:50in a changing international order and can a grouping that
00:03:54includes countries with very different interests actually challenge the
00:03:58structures of a system. system is still dominated
00:04:02by western institutions, that's what we'll be discussing tonight with
00:04:06our
00:04:06guests.
00:04:10christoph horstol author and politician join us from the city of
00:04:14Berlin,
00:04:20and Gilbert Doctor, independent international affairs analyst joined us
00:04:24from the study of Brussels.
00:04:27gentlemen, both of you, thank you so much for joining. me at this hour, let
00:04:31me start with Mr.
00:04:33of Horstell, this New Delhi's declaration
00:04:36does not name the U.S. and Israel directly, but it talks
00:04:40about attacks against civilian infrastructure
00:04:44and also also peaceful nuclear facilities. how significant do
00:04:48you see this? i think this whole
00:04:52brick summit is
00:04:54in historic, of and the speech by president
00:04:58Peseskian will also... were going down as
00:05:01golden and
00:05:02you know door breaking in history because
00:05:06he has in history because he has
00:05:09of very very strongly um...
00:05:13that this rule and accompanied by
00:05:17currency rule must finally come to an end and
00:05:21that all countries have
00:05:22the right to participate and that in fact bricks
00:05:26is the one forum where these powers for
00:05:30freedom and for security for commune security
00:05:34and for the stopping the rule the
00:05:37dollar that this can be developed in bricks and that was very
00:05:41strong and I think it ignited somehow
00:05:44bricks. Mr. Doctor,
00:05:48thank you so much for joining us as well. Your thoughts on the same
00:05:51question. I think that
00:05:55the achievement the Indian prime minister was
00:05:58enormous to bring together
00:06:01divergent positions, most
00:06:05particularly with respect to the ongoing war in west
00:06:08Asia, when you have Iran present with
00:06:12a... Dubai presented and discussing
00:06:16our situation peaceably, this was the proof
00:06:20the value of such international conferences, most
00:06:23importantly the bilateral discussions that take place in
00:06:27the context of such gatherings. However,
00:06:31the the final text
00:06:34the declaration is rather mely mouth
00:06:38with respect to these US sanctions and
00:06:42US rampage through through global
00:06:46economic conditions that we
00:06:50see and which were denounced in a
00:06:53a formal and weak way without the strength
00:06:57the position of your president, that is to say
00:07:01the United States was, well it was not named, but that is understandable,
00:07:05the issue was not named, the issue must
00:07:08be for the bricks nations to state.
00:07:13clearly that they will resist and they will
00:07:16not take the dictate the United States with
00:07:20regard to their mutual relations of all kinds, that
00:07:24is cultural relations, most importantly economic relations,
00:07:27commerce. the president trump
00:07:31has done his best to wreck the
00:07:35organization, from his first days in office he
00:07:38imposed um awful tariffs and sanctions.
00:07:42on the five founding members for various reasons,
00:07:46on Brazil because of its treatment of Bolsonaro, on South
00:07:50Africa because of its alleged
00:07:53mistreatment of white farmers on
00:07:56India, China and Russia because they trade
00:08:00with one another, when the United States as sanctioned
00:08:03Russia, the the point was to wreck bricks
00:08:07and he did a pretty good damage. India after
00:08:10all, stopped buying.
00:08:42parties, that was not done, and it is
00:08:45unclear how um, how prime minister
00:08:49Modi will behave in the face of US
00:08:53secondary sanctions for any dealings that it has with
00:08:56Iran. That was, that's not clear. Just to
00:08:59denounce these sanctions and tariffs is not
00:09:03enough. Moreover, the issue of
00:09:06dedollarization. Um, it is not clear
00:09:09that there is any real plan. in
00:09:13bricks to uh to find an
00:09:16alternative to the dollar, the there was talk several years
00:09:20ago, two, three years ago, about a bricks currency,
00:09:24it failed, it went nowhere, and
00:09:27to in the face of such a failure,
00:09:30it is not very helpful to speak about trade
00:09:34national currencies, they work for some cases and
00:09:38state to state and it don't work in others, they works very well.
00:09:42and countries, two countries have bilateral trade of
00:09:46roughly the same volume, that is to say, if there is not
00:09:50a big deficit in on one side or the other
00:09:54in their trade, then the national
00:09:57currencies work perfectly, however very often that is not the
00:10:01case, and there is very little you can do to to
00:10:05change the situation, for example the the rus
00:10:09russia chinese, sorry the russian.
00:10:13with china, yes, is virtually balanced, national
00:10:17currencies are perfectly acceptable and create no problems and they
00:10:20remove the problem the dollar for third third.
00:10:26country um currencies are
00:10:29being used for for the exchange, however when you take
00:10:32India,
00:10:33you don't
00:10:34have such a situation, it's wildly unbalanced, India
00:10:38and China, wildly unbalanced, national currencies will
00:10:42do nothing to improve trade between these
00:10:44countries. interesting insights there,
00:10:48mr. doctor, I will come back to that. Mr. Horstell, you
00:10:52wanted to chime in? Yes, I
00:10:56think it has turned out that very successfully Iran
00:11:00has asked as
00:11:01a fee for passing Honmes, that this will be paid out
00:11:05in Renmi, and that was
00:11:08successful, so in fact there can be
00:11:11so to say supranational bigger
00:11:14currency like the Chinese to
00:11:18level discrepancies between national
00:11:21currencies, and that is very correct, Mr.
00:11:25doctor was said here, and I think bricks will
00:11:28find mechanisms for that, and that was the call in bricks that
00:11:32this is being handled, so in fact if the
00:11:36closing document is not so strong,
00:11:39that uh is of course necessary to keep in mind,
00:11:43but we also keep in mind how close India is to
00:11:47Israel, so in this case and also tries
00:11:50to balance its relationship with the
00:11:53US. and that means it was a great risk,
00:11:57this this brisk summit in New Delhi, and
00:12:01I think it has proven that bricks is strong enough to
00:12:05balance all these national problems carried by
00:12:09India into the group, so that means we could not
00:12:13expect too much from this final declaration,
00:12:16and be happy that some basic layers have been laid
00:12:20down and Iran played a very strong role
00:12:24into, putting down these basic layers and
00:12:27they will in fact survive, they will grow stronger over
00:12:31the years, we cannot expect everything from the first
00:12:34summit a new situation, we have a globally
00:12:38new situation, because the US have lost their leading power
00:12:42militarily and currency
00:12:45wise. Mr. Doctor, your
00:12:47response. Well, I think we are
00:12:50looking a situation that is several years away with respect
00:12:54to dedollarization, the dollar indeed has
00:12:58lost some of its luster, but by no
00:13:01means has stopped being the most important
00:13:05global currency for exchange, despite all the
00:13:09wreckage that Mr. Trump has created, there is no replacement
00:13:13for this moment for the dollar in many countries
00:13:16exchange,
00:13:18it is understandable to me that the language
00:13:22used at bricks was very diplomatic, "there
00:13:25was no, there was no wish to
00:13:28cross Trump or across the United States and this is not
00:13:32arbit, it's a matter of national interest, for
00:13:36example, just turning to to
00:13:39India, India has one of its biggest
00:13:43export items, services, it
00:13:46services, meaning
00:13:50programming, software programming, they export 200
00:13:53billion dollar." year, which is vast amount
00:13:57of services of this nature, of that half,
00:14:01100 billion a year is to is united
00:14:05states, the by comparison,
00:14:08the the much discussed indian
00:14:12purchases of Russian discounted crude
00:14:16oil is much below that level, I think it's a 55
00:14:20billion dollars, so if you look at pure
00:14:23national interest, is understandable that
00:14:27India is wary of antagonizing Trump and the
00:14:30United States, nonetheless, there is a certain point when you have
00:14:34to defend your existential interests
00:14:37and avoiding US
00:14:41dicktat as was practiced six months
00:14:44ago and whereas before the the war
00:14:48in February when India indeed followed the
00:14:51dictate of Trump and did stop its purchases. world,
00:14:55that can no longer go on, it that kind of
00:14:58behavior, rex, makes a nonsense of
00:15:02bricks. Mr. Doctor, I was staying with
00:15:06you, this is something that Dr. Pesishion talked about
00:15:09and you mentioned that in your first response, he called for
00:15:13greater use of national currencies and independent payment
00:15:16mechanisms and a
00:15:19and way to weaken the sanctions
00:15:22regime. What me? could realistically
00:15:26do that, you see,
00:15:29it is a long way coming,
00:15:33I'm so sorry, but that question was for Mr. Doctor, I'm going to come back to you.
00:15:38"sorry, please, well, I think we have to look at the worlds that really
00:15:41is. The problem with the language of bricks, but I was listening to
00:15:44closely, it's glosses over
00:15:47details, which are extremely important, speaking
00:15:51about this, I have in mind president's address in which he
00:15:55spoke about the 40% of global GDP that is not
00:15:59represented like by bricks and this is an achievement to
00:16:02bricks, yes and no, it's not because each bricks
00:16:06member has has..." has grown its economy
00:16:09so much as to contribute to that of results, no, it is a
00:16:12Chinese growth which explains the 40%, and that
00:16:16to hide that fact is to have illusion about what
00:16:20bricks has achieved and has not achieved. um, with respect
00:16:24to mutual trade, I was impressed by
00:16:28the size the Russians of equipment and technologies that they
00:16:32hope to sell in in India, but to receive what
00:16:36in return if... Russian sell sell civil
00:16:39aircraft to India, they'll just be adding to their
00:16:42pile of unusable rupees. This
00:16:46has to be faced, there's nothing, there's nothing wrong with facing the facts.
00:16:50I don't see how you can build a future if you don't admit
00:16:54the facts of today, if certain countries have unbalanced trade,
00:16:58it is not quickly um
00:17:02address,
00:17:03it is not a matter of today and tomorrow send a trade
00:17:06mission. "and so you have to concentrate on what is
00:17:10perspective, and you have to put to the side what
00:17:14is not easy to resolve, such as these disparities
00:17:18in trade between India and China, it cannot be fixed, not
00:17:21in forseable future, so move to other things which can be
00:17:25fixed, and here I see a certain lack of
00:17:29transparency. Mr. Horstole, your
00:17:32response to the same question, and also your response to Mr.
00:17:36Doctor's remarks." Yeah, um, what Mr.
00:17:40Doctor has said is very correct, and we need to
00:17:44put vision against these problems. It is very clear
00:17:48that many,
00:17:49you know, um, gremiums that we have right
00:17:53now, like the United Nations Security Council,
00:17:56they are not reflecting the
00:17:59political and economic reality in
00:18:03the world right now, and that means that bricks like
00:18:07others have to face the necessity to build up
00:18:11their own structures, that means a global bank
00:18:15for bricks members and friends so to say to
00:18:18exchange their currencies, that is very necessary.
00:18:22right now you
00:18:23know from bretton woods we had the dollar as the leading
00:18:27global currency, that is of course forbidden in the future if
00:18:31we want to have a free and server world with true
00:18:35multilateralism uh and that means in
00:18:38fact that you know the countries have to come together like
00:18:42they did very well in in bricks in these hours
00:18:46and find out on what
00:18:49you know supernational mechanism they
00:18:53want to found this global exchange bank
00:18:57exactly address this question of
00:18:59you know inequalities in mutual trade between
00:19:03two nations. Mr. Doctor, let ask you this:
00:19:07general questions uh, a general question on the
00:19:11multilateral world, um, how far are
00:19:15we from it, especially when it comes to to global
00:19:18economy? let's not have illusions, again, you cannot
00:19:22build the future based illusions. multilateral
00:19:26world does not mean that 140 countries will have equal
00:19:29weight, that is unrealistic, that's not how the world works, has never
00:19:33worked that way and will not in the future. we have, i think of...
00:19:37George Orwells Animal farm and all animals are equal, but some animals are
00:19:41more equal than others. Let's be very frank about it. The
00:19:45animals that are more equal than others in bricks are
00:19:48Rick, Russia, India and China,
00:19:51and the this the meeting in Delhi was very important
00:19:55for reconsolidating the relationship
00:19:58between those three powers, they
00:20:02can together manage the disparities
00:20:06and the... the frictions
00:20:09between the members and member other
00:20:13members of bricks and those who are partners of
00:20:17bricks. there necessarily will be
00:20:20disparities and conflicts. the fact that
00:20:23united Arab Emirates and Iran are present
00:20:27is one example the
00:20:31the the differing interests of member
00:20:34countries. however, um... "if you have strong
00:20:38management that's united, then this can be handled
00:20:42well, as I think, I think prime minister Modi did a
00:20:46very good job in in precisely that way."
00:20:50what had what bricks has suffered in the last several years was from
00:20:54the frictions and the alienation and distress
00:20:58between China and India that had its
00:21:01basis in territorial disputes at their borders and
00:21:05military clash
00:21:08and it had as a consequence
00:21:11Indias listening closely
00:21:13to the cyren call the United States to join the Indo
00:21:17Pacific ation of
00:21:20countries to contain China,
00:21:24fortunately Mr. Trump's
00:21:27behavior and his destructive disruptive
00:21:31behavior broke that illusion at India, and
00:21:34India has readjusted, recalibrated its
00:21:38relations with China, which we saw in the in the summit
00:21:42in Delhi
00:21:44today, it was very important that she
00:21:48came ' and it is, I think
00:21:52this is one the major achievements that the core countries of founded
00:21:55wicks are back together again in a way that
00:21:59can steer this, this group where there are many
00:22:03different interests an effective
00:22:05way. Mr.
00:22:09Horstole, let me bring the um the attention of our
00:22:13viewers to the matter that bricks called for, which was protection of
00:22:16Palestinians and end to the unlawful occ'. and
00:22:20humanitarian access to gaza, what concrete
00:22:24measures can bricks take in this
00:22:27regard? first of all, there's
00:22:30it's necessary, maybe not right during this bricks
00:22:34because of India's close relationship to Israel, but later
00:22:38on for sure, and with Iran as an
00:22:42emerging power with
00:22:45you, Russia, China and
00:22:48India,
00:22:49it is very clear that Iran's weight in the bricks
00:22:53group will grow and is growing
00:22:55continuously, and that means that the
00:22:59group of countries, not during the summit, that's a very
00:23:02difficult question, and I think Britain
00:23:06Modi did fantastic job to balance all
00:23:10these different issues and keep India's national
00:23:13interests clear, that is of course necessary, but after
00:23:17that there will be a... closer cooperation,
00:23:21i think with more countries to join in that
00:23:25Israel cannot kill a whole country like
00:23:28Palestine and the world watches,
00:23:31we have a situation in which Iran has not fired
00:23:35a single missile at Israel since April
00:23:398, and that was unnecessary, the mou
00:23:42allowed for sanctions and against the US,
00:23:46Iran has very powerfully, played out the sanctions.
00:23:50and the power they had or they have, Iran has, but
00:23:54not against Israel. Israel is in fact the big winner the
00:23:57mou, and Iran is struggling, Trump is
00:24:00struggling, that is very interesting situation that cannot
00:24:04continue, it is very clear that now the population in
00:24:08Palestine, especially in Gaza comes to an end of what is
00:24:11endurable, and and that's what we have, and let me say one
00:24:15thing, the calling off of sanctions, my political party is
00:24:19asked. for it people to people friendship with Iran since
00:24:23inauguration for 13 years ago, and we want to
00:24:27call of all sanctions against Iran
00:24:29unconditionally, but why can I not enter
00:24:33Iran and talk to people, why don't I get the visa, if I write to
00:24:37the Iranian ambassador, I don't get answer, that doesn't
00:24:40work
00:24:41in the future, hopefully. Thank you so much,
00:24:45Mr. Horstole for your remarks, that was Christoph horstole, author and
00:24:49politician join us from... city of Berlin and Gilbert Doctor,
00:24:52Independent International Affairs analyst joined us from the city of
00:24:56Brussels. Thank you both
00:24:57for your insights tonight. And that brings us to the end of this edition of our
00:25:01spotlight program. Thank you for joining us and
00:25:03bye-bye.
00:25:17In today's show, we'll be revisiting the genocide in south. which
00:25:21is continuing to see killings, displacement and the destruction of
00:25:24homes unfolding every day, despite a supposed se
00:25:28fire. well, the scale of destruction in
00:25:31south Lebanon is almost
00:25:34unimaginable for most of us, this
00:25:38is an area that is 10, 20
00:25:42times the size of Gaza that is occupied by the Israelis
00:25:45and they have been conducting uh
00:25:50total uh ethnic cleansing campaign, you don't make an
00:25:54agreement with the science entity and expect that they will keep to it, they
00:25:58violates every cease fire, every treaty, every agreement, usually
00:26:02before it's... even come into effect, and of course that was the
00:26:05same uh in Lebanon, from June
00:26:07onwards.
00:26:17July 31st, 2026, nighttime straight of Hormus,
00:26:20southern Iran, the United States launched a heavy wave of
00:26:24strikes against command centers, radars, surveillance
00:26:28systems and air defense positions across southern Iran, intended.
00:26:32to make the skies over southern Iran safer for American aircraft,
00:26:36but just hours later, something unexpected
00:26:39happened. An American MQ9
00:26:43Reaper was shot down over the straight of Hormus.
00:26:46The MQ9 is no ordinary drone. It is one of America's
00:26:50primary platforms for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance
00:26:54and precision strikes, capable of remaining airborne for more than a full
00:26:58day while carrying an advanced suite of sensors and weapons, and this was
00:27:02not the... first reaper lost. Since the beginning the war, Iran
00:27:06has taken around 50 MQ9 Reapers out of operation, roughly
00:27:10one quarter the entire US Reaper fleet, but the real story
00:27:14was only beginning. Shortly afterward, an F-35 entered the
00:27:17picture, one the world's most advanced combat aircraft, designed
00:27:21specifically to penetrate sophisticated air defense networks, but
00:27:25Stealth does not mean invisible. One radar may detect
00:27:29only faint signature, infrared sensor may pick. up the heat from its
00:27:33engines, another system may detect its electronic emissions, and
00:27:37when the information from all these systems is connected through a single
00:27:40network, much clearer picture the target begins to emerge.
00:27:44That same night, the tracking the F-35 reached the level of a
00:27:48weapons quality lock, a warning the pilot could not ignore. The
00:27:52F-35 did not continue its mission and quickly left the
00:27:55area, and perhaps that is the most important part the story: air
00:27:59defense success does not always mean shooting an aircraft. down,
00:28:03sometimes
00:28:04it is enough to stop an aircraft designed to penetrate hostile
00:28:07airspace from completing its mission, and now for the United
00:28:11States, the issue is
00:28:12no longer simply the loss of an MQ9 or the retreat
00:28:16of an F35, the bigger question is, how could a network whose
00:28:20radars and key components had been attacked only hours earlier
00:28:23remain operational and still force one of America's most
00:28:27advanced aircraft to abandon its mission, incident that
00:28:31now forces the... It states to rethink not just a flight path,
00:28:35but its entire calculation over Iran's
00:28:38skies. The
00:28:41equation in Iran's skies is no longer the
00:28:44same.
