00:23:50conducted, we constantly see exciting news in the field of
00:23:54medicine and all sciences, even the legal profession is now making
00:23:58use of this new technology, but what are the benefits and
00:24:02the concerns? artificial intelligence, especially in the legal
00:24:06profession now is ever developing, now
00:24:08it is moving with a quicker pace and we could have ever anticipated, and the
00:24:12reality is that
00:24:13it is here to stay, now we must have decisions that we
00:24:17must make in terms of how best can we incorporate this not just into
00:24:21the legal practices across the countries, across the caribbean, but in
00:24:25our courts generally. with rapid increase in using this
00:24:28technology, can AI replace the need for a
00:24:31lawyer? i certainly would hope not. for
00:24:35starters, i would say that AI is indeed extremely impressive.
00:24:39AI can do research for you, it can even prepare
00:24:43first draft, but the law is so much wider than
00:24:47just information alone. law and involves things like
00:24:51strategy, judgment, advocacy. so much of
00:24:55that actually takes place in the courtroom, and AI is not present in
00:24:59the courtroom, it cannot assess a court, it certainly can't
00:25:03cross-examine any witnesses, not now, at least, so
00:25:07the way
00:25:07I would phrase it is, it's not really about replacing your lawyer, it
00:25:11can supplement your atterny at law instead. the beauty of retaining your
00:25:15attorney at law and why AI could never entirely replace
00:25:18attorneys, is the extent the appreciation of not just what happens in the
00:25:22courtroom, but the interpretation, the experience that your attorney
00:25:26brings. AI technology is unlikely going to be able to assess a
00:25:30judg's demean, how a judge feels about case, the way that a
00:25:34witness reacts to certain questions, etc., so interpretation is
00:25:38also key. many are seeing the benefits of investing in AI and
00:25:42are now embracing the impact a day-to-day case load. for
00:25:46the first time we are seeing that across the entire career.
00:25:50different jurisdictions are implementing what you call practice
00:25:54directions and rules which govern the way that AI
00:25:58can be implemented not only in the courtroom per say but a
00:26:01legal pr. the hall mark of that however has
00:26:05always remained that while a lawyer can delegate a
00:26:09task to AI it can never delegate the
00:26:12responsibility, the buck stops with the attorney at law.
00:26:15AI is not infallible. AI can make
00:26:19mistakes and when AI is wrong, as we sometimes say,
00:26:22it is wrong and strong, it is wrong with the utmost
00:26:25confidence. so this is something that we must always treat with
00:26:29caution. indeed, while there is a rush embrace. the
00:26:32technology, there will always be role for the human element to
00:26:36discern what is real or fake, the need to maintain
00:26:39compassion, and the skill to think and evaluate every
00:26:43situation differently. I can say that the Caribbean as a whole is now
00:26:47almost up to speed with lot of different countries across the globe that we
00:26:51formly leading the AI race. now we have the same
00:26:54access to the softwares that many of our other global
00:26:58leaders have been using for the past couple of years across.
00:27:02the legal community and across the Caribbean, I can safely say
00:27:06that
00:27:06it is now being slowly accepted as part the legal
00:27:10profession. Attorneys are now seeing AI as a useful
00:27:14tool rather than the
00:27:15enemy. There is
00:27:19saying that AI is not going to replace lawyers, but lawyers
00:27:23who utilize AI properly may well replace lawyers that
00:27:27don't. So we never want to treat artificial intelligence as
00:27:31the enemy when we look at. it through the lens the law, instead we have to
00:27:35keep in mind it is a useful tool, the reality is it's not going
00:27:39anywhere, so we need to find out how best we can have it
00:27:42maximize the benefit for the people across the Caribbean,
00:27:46while at the same time managing the extent of its risk.
00:27:50used properly, AI offers the opportunity to work smarter
00:27:54and faster, assisting the lawyer to become more efficient
00:27:58in serving the needs their clients. certainly citizens can use
00:28:02artificial intelligence, including with respect to all
00:28:06aspects the law, but my advice would be that that is
00:28:09predicated upon just basic understanding, a foundation the
00:28:13law, because clear distinction must be made between
00:28:17information versus advice, AI might give you information, but your
00:28:21lawyers still they want to vet and provide the appropriate advice to you, and if
00:28:25that distinction is understood, it will help both citizen and lawyer
00:28:29alike. there is lot of talk
00:28:32across the Caribbean as a whether artificial intelligence and the law
00:28:36should be something that we fair. My view is different. I do not think it
00:28:40should be faired. It should be respected. It is a tool that is
00:28:44here to stay and we have to find out the most efficient yet
00:28:47responsible way to use it. For example, motor vehicle can be
00:28:51dangerous as well, but that is why we learn to drive and we learn to
00:28:55keep our hands on the
00:28:56wheel.
