00:00:17Thank you, Fernando. Returning to conclusions, Venezuelans
00:00:21affected by the earthquakes in a migrant caravan seeking to cross Mexico
00:00:24to the United
00:00:25States.

00:02:32My name is Jimena de la Quintana, I am a CNN correspondent in Peru.
00:02:36Peru has gone through several political and social crises,
00:02:39I have had to be in the streets covering each one of them in recent
00:02:42years and on several occasions people have
00:02:46surrounded us to listen to what we were reporting, because as they
00:02:50say, they want to make sure that we report the truth, people don't
00:02:53trust, and although journalists are always exposed to criticism, our
00:02:57work, I think, is increasingly scrutinized. We have a great
00:03:00responsibility, our obligation as journalists is
00:03:04reason, to tell things as they are and not necessarily as they want us
00:03:08to tell them.
00:03:11We want to have great minds talking about the most
00:03:15important issues affecting our countries and us as
00:03:19people.
00:03:21I have a responsibility to tell the truth, to be truthful, not
00:03:25to be neutral, these are very different things. Oppenheimer
00:03:28presents... Sunday on CNN.
00:03:41And I know it's difficult, but how do you reach a
00:03:43balance where we don't lose sight
00:03:47of this that we had everywhere when we started
00:03:51preparing this talk, which is the objective, a very
00:03:55beach shower, common one, that we all benefit, not just a few,
00:03:58it shouldn't be a business, because as
00:04:02a business, well, other things can be invented, but something as
00:04:06delicate and with so much technological advancement as artificial
00:04:09intelligence, must have a
00:04:12basic condition, which is that it serves a
00:04:16majority of
00:04:32In Venezuela, lawyer Rocío San Miguel was acquitted, accused of
00:04:36alleged involvement in a plot against then-president Nicolás
00:04:40Maduro. In her case, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights
00:04:43had granted precautionary measures to protect her from threats
00:04:47related to her activism on detained persons. San
00:04:51Miguel was detained in 2024 and
00:04:53transferred to the Helicoide prison from which she was
00:04:56released a few days after Maduro's detention. Also, María Corina Machado's
00:05:00party, Vente Venezuela, announced this
00:05:03Thursday the acquittal of two of its
00:05:06members accused of the same alleged
00:05:08conspiracy.
00:07:22On June 24, two simultaneous earthquakes changed the
00:07:26lives of thousands of Venezuelans. After this
00:07:28tragedy, some decided to leave everything and begin a long and dangerous
00:07:32journey in search of the so-called American dream. Now they are part
00:07:36of a new migrant caravan advancing through southern Mexico towards the U.S. border.
00:07:39Let's go with my colleague who has the
00:07:42details.
00:07:47For some, they are just a statistic, for others,
00:07:51a sample of survival. This is Andrea Sofía
00:07:55García. She arrived in Tapachula, in the southern Mexican
00:07:58state of Chiapas, after crossing seven
00:08:01countries and a jungle, the Darién
00:08:03Gap.
00:08:06Two months ago she left her native Venezuela convinced that she would never
00:08:10return. She made
00:08:12that decision after on June 24th,
00:08:16two devastating consecutive earthquakes shook the
00:08:20north-central part of the country. The official death toll is
00:08:23just over 6,500 people, according to the National
00:08:27Assembly. I was in a barbershop,
00:08:30uh, I got back from the
00:08:33barbershop, I found
00:08:36everything, everyone was already under the rubble and the
00:08:40building was not in
00:08:42a bad situation, so I didn't know
00:08:45what to do. Her goal now is to reach
00:08:48the United States, so she joined a new caravan
00:08:52made up of immigrants from Central and South America that left
00:08:56Honduras at the end of September. My final destination
00:08:59is the United States.
00:09:02You know it's difficult, I'm going in search of the American dream, even though I know
00:09:05it's difficult,
00:09:07but
00:09:09everything is in God's hands, he who doesn't risk doesn't win and... and
00:09:13forward. Stephanie Bastidas has the same goal,
00:09:17another Venezuelan who is traveling in this
00:09:20contingent. She says that her father, two brothers,
00:09:24and an aunt left after the earthquakes and that it was her mother
00:09:28who helped her cover the expenses of her journey to the United
00:09:32States. My mom helped me by selling her cell phones, a refrigerator, and a
00:09:35motorcycle. After the earthquake, things have gotten worse. Kerry
00:09:39Rivas is another affected Venezuelan, she laments.
00:09:50but also for what she has faced since she left her country
00:09:54with the idea of reaching the United
00:09:56States. The first time we crossed, we were kidnapped.
00:10:00We were in the jungle for 16 days walking,
00:10:03lost without food. They robbed us, they made
00:10:06us run, they took our
00:10:08belongings. Rivas says she has been warned
00:10:12that the journey to the northern border of Mexico is
00:10:15dangerous. She assures that in Venezuela the situation has become
00:10:19even more difficult after the earthquakes, so
00:10:23returning is not in her plans. and no, very difficult, very
00:10:26difficult, very difficult, right now they are
00:10:30waiting to see what solution the government gives
00:10:33to those who, you know, lost their houses and all that, you
00:10:37understand, but yes, it's difficult
00:10:40right now. Andrea Sofía says that during the trip she faced
00:10:44extreme situations, especially crossing the Darién
00:10:48jungle, 8 and a half days unfortunately because I
00:10:51got lost with the group I was with.
00:10:55Uh, I got lost because coming down the hill of La
00:10:58Llorona, the Darién
00:11:00jungle, the Darién Gap,
00:11:02I took off my shoes, because there is a lot of quicksand, I mean, you see the
00:11:06normal earth, I mean, but you sink and you
00:11:08go. Now the three of them advance in this
00:11:12new caravan, leaving behind the pain and
00:11:15sadness for everything that happened after the tragedy of
00:11:18June, but also carrying the hope of
00:11:21reaching the long-awaited American
00:11:24dream. Rodríguez CNN Mexico City.
00:11:43And I know it's difficult, but how do you reach a
00:11:46balance in which we don't lose sight
00:11:50of this that we had everywhere when we started
00:11:53preparing this talk. That is the very common
00:11:57objective, that we all benefit, not just a few.
00:12:00It should not be a business,
00:12:04because as a business, well, other things can be invented,
00:12:07but something as delicate and with so much technological advancement as
00:12:11artificial intelligence must have a
00:12:15basic condition, which is that it serves a
00:12:18majority of
00:12:20humans.
00:13:45Our obligation as journalists is to say things as they
00:13:48are and not necessarily as they want us
00:13:51to tell them.
00:13:54We want to have great minds talking about the
00:13:57most important issues that affect our countries,
00:14:01us as people.
00:14:04I have a responsibility to tell the truth, to be truthful, not to
00:14:07be neutral, these are very different things. Oppenheimer
00:14:11presents Sunday on CNN.
00:14:45I am Jenane Villanueva in San José, Costa Rica, we are
00:14:49CNN.
00:14:56We continue in conclusions. In Spain, the rejection in Parliament
00:15:00of the decrees with which the government sought to confront the
00:15:03housing crisis and deactivate the protests is generating indignation and exacerbates
00:15:07the confrontation between the government and opposition. Poun Mosquera has the
00:15:10report from the epicenter of the protests in
00:15:13Madrid.
00:15:16Between frustration and indignation, that's how
00:15:20most of the demonstrators who throughout Friday morning
00:15:24were around Parliament say they feel.
00:15:27This is where the two Royal Decree-Laws that the government
00:15:30approved on Tuesday were debated with the intention of
00:15:34offering measures to combat the housing
00:15:37crisis. Both texts have been repealed, that is,
00:15:41not receiving a majority of votes in favor, they have not been
00:15:45approved, so these measures will not come into
00:15:48force. From outside we saw how dozens of
00:15:52demonstrators raised their voices
00:15:55shouting "shame" directed at the
00:15:59deputies who voted against all these
00:16:02proposals. However, some of the demonstrators told
00:16:05CNN that they already expected this to happen since
00:16:09throughout Thursday night
00:16:11most of the political parties that have representation in Parliament
00:16:15had already shared what the sense
00:16:19of their vote would be. Some
00:16:22of the conversations we had with the
00:16:25demonstrators are these, I thought these
00:16:29protests were
00:16:31being heard more
00:16:34and that these challenges
00:16:37would be accepted. It is
00:16:40outrageous that they are not listening to what
00:16:44the people are asking for from all the cities in Spain and
00:16:47well that the protest I don't think will stop
00:16:51because this is the last straw. Very discouraged, but well I think
00:16:54the only way now is a general strike, the
00:16:58unions have to mobilize and we, of course, are
00:17:02in favor of it and we will go wherever we have to go and wherever we have to reach
00:17:06because this will not stay like this. This situation leads us
00:17:09again to a political scenario of
00:17:12uncertainty. From the opposition, the president of the Popular
00:17:15Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, repeated once again the
00:17:19request for Pedro Sánchez, the president of the
00:17:22government, to bring forward the elections. On previous
00:17:26occasions, the leader of the executive had refused
00:17:29to do so, however, in this situation something different
00:17:32could happen, many national media
00:17:35affirm that the president is weighing the
00:17:39possibility of advancing with that extreme,
00:17:42advancing the elections, CNN has contacted
00:17:45La Moncloa and the president's entourage, without having
00:17:49confirmed that extreme. So,
00:17:52now a period of doubt opens up as to what
00:17:55will really happen. Those who do have clear the next steps
00:17:59are the demonstrators who for seven consecutive
00:18:02days have camped in the central Puerta del Sol in
00:18:06Madrid, they affirm that they will continue to maintain the pulse in the streets
00:18:09to force legislators to work again on measures that
00:18:13can alleviate the housing emergency. For
00:18:16CNN, Pau Mosquera, Madrid.
00:18:20And of course, the housing crisis
00:18:23in Spain continues. Behind the protests and political fights in
00:18:26Congress that we just saw, there are stories of evictions and
00:18:30suffering, like that of this woman in Palma de
00:18:34Mallorca. she called me on the phone and told me to
00:18:37hand over the keys, I asked her the
00:18:42she says her contract has ended, I say how come my contract has ended,
00:18:46no one notifies me, they are in the
00:18:49contract
00:18:51definitively,
00:18:53the contract is not renewed. Good
00:19:10morning, ah yes, because I can't
00:19:12bend this leg, I would come
00:19:15and with this I would close the
00:19:18door here, I would stay, always prepared
00:19:22with my hygiene things,
00:19:25my soap wipes to
00:19:29wash myself in the my
00:19:33diapers. There are fewer
00:19:35neighbors
00:20:21every time in the neighborhood,
00:20:24and we barely get to know
00:20:27each other these last few years.
00:20:30All of them are foreigners.
00:20:33The truth is that everything that happens in the world
00:22:50is being stirred up in some way, and
00:22:54that Latin America, with all the aspects that are there, as
00:22:57you said, of elections and
00:22:59of the treaty of Mexico with Canada
00:23:03and the United States, will be in the spotlight and comes at a time when markets,
00:23:07to continue a bit with our focus today on markets,
00:23:10when markets have also been doing quite
00:23:14well and there are expectations that, to the extent
00:23:18that they are difficult to participate in, certainly,
00:23:21but that they are moving
00:23:24in a way they haven't in many years.
00:23:46The Indian pilot who was seriously injured in the attack he suffered on Wednesday
00:23:50on the FlyDubai flight is recovering in a hospital in
00:23:53the United Arab Emirates and from there he spoke virtually
00:23:57with his country's prime minister. Sale Mergi has the
00:24:00report:
00:24:03The first and awaited words of Indian pilot Smith
00:24:07Mashar since he was attacked this Wednesday on the
00:24:10plane flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv confirm
00:24:14his heroic action that saved many lives. This
00:24:17pilot, while being attacked by the Omani co-pilot,
00:24:21managed to open the cockpit to allow several passengers
00:24:25and Israelis to pass through who managed
00:24:28to subdue the attacker and then stabilize the
00:24:32plane. These first words were given by this pilot
00:24:35in a video call, a conversation with the
00:24:39Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.
00:24:42Let's listen to part of this exciting and awaited
00:24:46conversation.
00:24:50"you are the hero pilot, and sir, I've been flying planes for the
00:24:53last 17 years, and I've been a captain for the last 11 years,
00:24:57and even if I shut my eyes, I know what is happening in the plane,
00:25:01and when I was on the ground, I realized that the aircraft was falling down, and
00:25:05I knew in that moment, one last push, meets, just do
00:25:09it, the door is right there, and even at that time he
00:25:12was beating me up, and then I just opened it, sir, and then everybody
00:25:16came, and everybody else also played equal role in this.
00:25:28The United Arab Emirates, where the Indian pilot and national
00:25:31and international hero is hospitalized,
00:25:33is leading the investigation to
00:25:37clarify the motives of this attack by the
00:25:40co-pilot, a frustrated attack that Israel
00:25:44claims already has a jihadist
00:25:47tone. For now, however, the investigation has not
00:25:51concluded. In addition to all this, it should be noted that the Emirati
00:25:54company FlyDubai announced today
00:25:58that it is suspending flights until
00:26:01October 15th. There is Israel, and all this while
00:26:04testimonies continue to emerge and continue to
00:26:07confirm the dramatic
00:26:11in the skies. One of them, Almock Italy, told us
00:26:15about those moments when the plane made a sharp
00:26:18and rapid descent, fearing for his life, as well
00:26:22as his wife's and two children's, and he also said
00:26:26that he can tell it thanks to the heroic action of the
00:26:29Indian pilot and several passengers.
00:26:33This is Sale Mergi for CNN,
00:28:11very different things. Oppenheimer presents Sunday
00:28:15on CNN. In that setting of
00:28:28objectives and relationships.
00:28:31Uh, we must maintain all the progress
00:28:33that has been made, not to mention other chapters such as equality between
00:28:37men and women, such as working
00:28:39conditions, such as the distribution of wealth, which is
00:28:43one of the problems that globalization has had, that is, well,
00:28:47you have to be thinking about a distribution of wealth that
00:28:50works and that does not create tensions,
00:28:53that part of the tension and we no longer have
00:28:57time for that of recent times is very
00:29:00much based on that tension produced by the
00:29:04global economy.
