00:00:20important days, in my opinion, in
00:00:37pencil what Since Donald Trump's return to the
00:00:40White House, the United States has turned tariffs into
00:00:45governability of progressive projects in an instrument of political pressure, into a weapon. The measures against Mexico, Canada, China
00:00:49and Brazil have opened a new stage of commercial tensions on the
00:00:53continent. Canada responded eye
00:00:55than ever before in for an eye and tooth for a tooth with tariffs on hundreds of American
00:00:58products, while Mexico has been under
00:01:02pressure to strengthen border control and
00:01:05avoid new penalties. Brazil,
00:01:08for its part, is accelerating its financial ties with China and the
00:01:12Well, the use of BRICS in defense of its own mechanisms such as PIX, which is
00:01:15tool as part of a new ecosystem of instant payments and against the
00:01:19dominance of the dollar. But this tariff
00:01:21war also hits the United States. The costs end up
00:01:25in the pockets of its consumers, affect
00:01:28supply chains and expose the agricultural sector to
00:01:32commercial reprisals. More than
00:01:34trade, the dispute reveals a battle for political and
00:01:38financial control of the region, amidst the advance of China, the
00:01:41BRICS and the search for alternatives to the system dominated by
00:01:45Washington, the US tariff war,
00:01:49commercial pressure and geopolitical dispute,
00:01:51let's put the point on the
00:01:54sur, as every year, the United law.
00:02:18On Saturday, August 22, the bilateral relationship between Washington and
00:02:21Ottawa suffered a critical fracture after the failure of high-level
00:02:25negotiations held in the US
00:02:28capital. On that day, extraordinary tariffs of
00:02:3250% imposed
00:02:35by Donald Trump on Canadian exports worth some 20
00:02:39billion dollars, equivalent to 5.5% of its
00:02:43shipments to US
00:02:46guests in territory, came into force. Faced with the breakdown of dialogue, Canadian Prime Minister
00:02:50Markney ordered the immediate withdrawal of his delegates in
00:02:54Washington and formally described the White
00:02:57House's maneuver as an unviable and unfair
00:03:00trade war under USMCA
00:03:01rules.
00:03:06We have consistently proposed long-term partnerships, while
00:03:10the United States has often sought short-term
00:03:13transactions. The gap between partners and competitors, unfortunately, has
00:03:17remained too wide in recent days. That is why last night I
00:03:21instructed our negotiators to return to Ottawa. We cannot
00:03:24accept what they have offered and we are not going to give what they have
00:03:27asked for.
00:03:33The Prime Minister also indicated in a post on his social
00:03:36network X that Canada will match the new US
00:03:40tariffs, dollar for dollar. In addition, we are
00:03:43implementing new and improved measures worth
00:03:477.5 billion dollars to support
00:03:49Canadian workers and businesses. This is in addition to almost
00:03:5325 million dollars
00:03:55in aid implemented since the imposition of unjustified US
00:03:59tariffs, united in defending Canadian jobs, industries
00:04:03and families. On
00:04:05Tuesday, September 8, a package of retaliatory tariffs designed
00:04:09to respond dollar for dollar,
00:04:13taxing more than 700 US products, valued
00:04:17between 20,000 and 27 million dollars with direct
00:04:21impacts on strategic industries such as
00:04:23dairy, steel, paper, agricultural machinery,
00:04:26and electronics, came into effect. The impact of this tariff clash
00:04:30immediately shifted to consumers and businesses. In the United
00:04:33States, a gallon of gasoline exceeded
00:04:35$4.15 and analysts project an additional cost
00:04:41then of more than $1,100 annually per household. Meanwhile, Trump
00:04:43intensified his pressure, threatening to veto Canadian
00:04:46aircraft manufacturer Bombardier if it does
00:04:49not move its plants to US
00:04:52The relocation of soil. Unfortunately, Donald Trump's
00:04:56government has accustomed us to this type of
00:04:59practice: threats, coercion,
00:05:03blackmail. And in this case, the
00:05:06use of
00:05:08not generate new American tariffs as a tool for blackmail is very
00:05:12evident, even against important partners, important
00:05:16commercial partners of the United States itself.
00:05:20Unfortunately, Trump has not
00:05:22shown respect for legality
00:05:26or the basis
00:05:29of what international relations are.
00:05:32We have seen it in several aspects, not only
00:05:35economic, but in economic it is also reflected in this
00:05:39specific case with how, as he said,
00:05:43the Prime Minister of Canada, the United States
00:05:47seems to sign with
00:05:50it has agreed to, meaning that the signature is
00:05:53later erased and that it does not respect even what they themselves have
00:05:57agreed to. Beyond the clash with
00:06:00Canada, Washington's tariff offensive
00:06:04seeks to turn trade into a mechanism of geopolitical
00:06:08pressure, in a region where trade
00:06:11between Mexico, Canada and the United States exceeds a trillion dollars
00:06:15a year, the White House not only discusses tariffs,
00:06:19it pressures to condition sovereign decisions,
00:06:22toughen migration control and stop
00:06:25the advance of China and the BRICS. The regional response
00:06:29oscillates between negotiation,
00:06:32border reinforcement and diplomatic
00:06:34confrontation. On Sunday, February 2,
00:06:382025, Donald Trump signed in the Oval Office
00:06:41in Washington, Executive Orders invoking the International
00:06:45Emergency Economic Powers Act, setting punitive tariffs of
00:06:48between 10 and 25% against its partners
00:06:52in the American continent to extract immediate
00:06:55political concessions. In North America, the Mexican government,
00:06:58headed by President Claudia Sheinbaum in
00:07:02Mexico City, resorted to diplomatic containment to
00:07:05safeguard its industrial integration. The
00:07:08United States government,
00:07:11after 30 days of pause, unilaterally
00:07:15unilateralmente
00:07:17decided to impose 25% tariffs on Mexican
00:07:20exports,
00:07:23despite the trade treaty signed by President Trump himself
00:07:26in his first term. I want to make
00:07:30clear today that we will always
00:07:33seek a negotiated
00:07:36solution, as we have proposed within
00:07:40the framework of respect for our sovereignty. But the
00:07:44unilateral decision taken
00:07:46by the United States affects national
00:07:49and foreign companies operating in our country
00:07:52and affects our peoples.
00:07:56Therefore, we have decided to respond with
00:07:59tariff and non-tariff measures. After
00:08:03emergency bilateral calls in February
00:08:062025, Mexico deployed 10,000 National Guard
00:08:09troops on its northern and southern borders to
00:08:13curb migration and intercept fentanyl
00:08:16chemical precursors, managing to pause the 25% tariffs
00:08:19pending the renegotiation of USMCA.
00:08:23In South America, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da
00:08:27Silva directly confronted the onslaught in Brasília on
00:08:30Tuesday, April 15, 2025, after the
00:08:33office of the United States Trade Representative opened
00:08:36investigations against the national digital payment system
00:08:40(PIX) and imposed tariffs on steel.
00:08:43Brazil responded by approving a commercial reciprocity law and
00:08:47reorienting record exports of soybeans, meat and coffee
00:08:50to the Chinese market and the alliance with the BRICS group:
00:08:54Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
00:08:58We want, uh, emperor.
00:09:01We are sovereign countries.
00:09:05Well, if he thinks he can tax, countries
00:09:09have the right to tax too. There is.
00:09:14The United States has transformed into a country, uh, that we could
00:09:18say has a failed state at an international
00:09:21level, because one never knows how the United States
00:09:24will act. And in that framework,
00:09:28we know that from the White House the
00:09:31interests of the power groups of the United
00:09:34States will be projected, but without
00:09:37any rules, without respecting signed trade
00:09:40agreements, without respecting
00:09:42historical agreements with partners who are
00:09:46not commercial but political partners like
00:09:49NATO partners, without
00:09:52respecting international agreements that the
00:09:56United States itself has adhered to, without respecting the
00:09:59laws and norms of the United
00:10:02Nations. So it has become a
00:10:05state, uh, that really
00:10:08destabilizes everything that is international
00:10:12legality and legal legality and the
00:10:15possibility of projecting something long term
00:10:19with, uh, as partners of that
00:10:21country. The figures dismantle the
00:10:25discourse, the tariff war not only punishes US partners, it also
00:10:29hits its own economy. With tariffs
00:10:33reaching up to 25 and 50%, Washington puts
00:10:36at risk a deeply integrated production chain.
00:10:39A large part of imported oil comes from Canada, and in the automotive
00:10:42industry, parts such as engines and transmissions cross borders several
00:10:46times before final assembly. So
00:10:50each new tax makes production more expensive,
00:10:54alters logistics, and weakens the North American
00:10:57bloc. And when Washington imposes tariffs
00:11:01on its partners, it also charges its
00:11:34own economy. We are not satisfied with the headline of the moment
00:11:37or the trending topic that others set. Here we
00:11:40analyze the real impact of what happens in the
00:11:44world and on your screen. From Monday to Friday,
00:11:47we plan to dismantle the information matrix and
00:11:51everything that is geopolitical daily events that become
00:11:55so interactive, the truth moves us in our

00:13:03the South American giant is in constant
00:14:18The White House promises that tariffs will punish its
00:14:22competitors and bring jobs back to the United States. That's the
00:14:25promise, but the truth is that the bill is not paid by foreign
00:14:29powers, it is paid by importers,
00:14:31companies and ultimately American
00:14:34families. The surcharges end up in the prices
00:14:38of food, consumer goods and national
00:14:41production. Meanwhile, the trade deficit
00:14:45exceeds a trillion dollars.
00:14:47Protectionism does not reactivate industry, it makes life more expensive
00:14:51and weakens production chains. The tariff that promised
00:14:55Leo ends up being collected in the pockets of
00:14:58workers. That's how things are. The
00:15:01tariff offensive of Donald Trump's second term formally
00:15:05began on Saturday, February 1, 2025, in Washington, when
00:15:09the magnate invoked extraordinary national security
00:15:12powers to tax continental trade. Faced with the
00:15:16discourse that presents tariffs as a direct charge to
00:15:19foreign countries, US customs regulations
00:15:23stipulate that the tariff is paid by the US importing company
00:15:27at the border, unleashing an inflationary effect on processed
00:15:30foods, clothing and technology.
00:15:34In a few minutes I will begin.
00:15:37historical that institutes
00:15:40reciprocal tariffs in countries all over the
00:15:44world. That is, if they do it to us, we do it to
00:15:48them.
00:15:54This is one of the most
00:15:58American history and it is the declaration of economic
00:16:01independence. For
00:16:04years I have worked with American citizens who
00:16:07were forced to sit aside while other nations grew
00:16:11very rich at our expense. But
00:16:14today it is our turn to prosper and by
00:16:17doing so with trillions and trillions of
00:16:20dollars, reducing our taxes and paying our national debt, and
00:16:24everything will happen very quickly with today's actions. We are finally
00:16:28going to be able to make America great again, greater
00:16:33the manufacturing industry.
00:16:36The application of these tariffs since February 2025
00:16:39fractured integrated assembly in North America, because these
00:16:43engine parts, cables and transmissions cross the borders
00:16:47between Mexico, the United States and
00:16:50Canada up to eight times before a car is finished. The customs
00:16:54tariff increased the final cost per vehicle by
00:16:57between $300 and $6,000, reducing the competitiveness of
00:17:01Detroit plants compared to the Asian industry.
00:17:04Well, there's a logic that had been
00:17:07established in NAFTA and that had to do with
00:17:11companies being able to locate the
00:17:14manufacturing of different parts, but especially in the
00:17:17automotive industry, uh, some located
00:17:20in Mexico, others in the United
00:17:24States, others in Canada. The
00:17:27fact that a product starts to be manufactured in
00:17:31the United States, goes to Mexico, finishes,
00:17:34advances in its process, returns to the United States,
00:17:37returns to generate another part of that process to then go to
00:17:41Canada, finish that assembly and return to
00:17:45the United States means that the border between those countries is crossed
00:17:49several times. The tariffs
00:17:52imposed by Trump made
00:17:55it so that every time a product
00:17:59crossed that border, it had to pay a tax
00:18:02and then went back the other way, it had to pay the tax
00:18:06again. So that has greatly
00:18:10harmed large industries. General Motors, Ford, have
00:18:13shown declines
00:18:16in their revenues due to
00:18:20this high cost of tariffs. The
00:18:24US agricultural sector absorbed the most
00:18:27severe blow due to immediate retaliations imposed by trading
00:18:31partners. The closure of markets for soybeans,
00:18:34corn and pork in China, Brazil and Canada
00:18:37forced the US Department of Agriculture to disburse
00:18:41multi-billion dollar federal subsidy packages, financed by the
00:18:45public treasury, to prevent the bankruptcy of farmers in the Midwest.
00:18:48Far from reactivating the US industrial
00:18:51belt, the taxes in force since early
00:18:542025 accelerated the flight of manufacturing investments to
00:18:58Southeast Asian economies such as Vietnam and India, while
00:19:02consolidating South-South trade between South
00:19:05America and Asia that leaves
00:19:07North American industry isolated from emerging
00:19:09markets.
00:19:12Trump sought to generate, under pressure,
00:19:15the reindustrialization
00:19:19of the United States, North American industries, especially
00:19:22the automotive industry, but the
00:19:25different technological ones had gone to
00:19:28look for other places with cheaper labor and
00:19:31especially to go to China.
00:19:34No, that's where the great competition is. of
00:19:38the United States and the great rivalry, its trade
00:19:40war with China, in that case
00:19:44uh, this conflict what
00:19:47it did was try on the one hand
00:19:50to generate that China stop
00:19:53buying a large part of the soybean production
00:19:57from the United States, for which Trump had
00:20:00to give subsidies to the North
00:20:04American agricultural sectors
00:20:06to... increase or compensate for the
00:20:10drop in exports of those
00:20:13products. And
00:20:18what happened was that the
00:20:21tariffs he tried to impose to get companies
00:20:24back to the United States were not effective.
00:20:30North American industry, although some of those industries
00:20:33stopped being in China, went to
00:20:37Mexico, went to other places closer
00:20:41to the United States, but not to the United States itself. They did
00:20:46labor or restore
00:20:50North American industry, as was supposed or as Trump
00:20:53thought those measures would
00:20:56impact. Well, it turns out that behind the
00:21:00tariffs there is a whole strategy of political pressure. The dependence
00:21:04of many Latin American economies on the US market gives Washington
00:21:08a tool to condition sovereign
00:21:11decisions, and while the countries attacked by
00:21:14Washington try to seek financial alternatives, the White
00:21:18House tries to impose its agenda on the region. It's not
00:21:22just trade, it's political pressure on Latin
00:21:25America. The use of tariffs and sanctions under the
00:21:29Trump administration consolidated an asymmetric pressure
00:21:31strategy to erode the
00:21:35the region. In Brazil, the siege on steel and the
00:21:39persecution of the Pix system seek to hit the administration of Luiz
00:21:42Inácio Lula da Silva and oxygenate the Bolsonaro current.
00:21:46A tactic that replicates the economic asphyxiation historically
00:21:50applied to Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua and that extended
00:21:53commercial pressures against Gustavo Petro's Colombia to undermine his electoral
00:21:57base in favor of sectors aligned with Washington.
00:22:02the tariff
00:22:05US political interference, especially in
00:22:09Latin America, has been very very treacherous, very
00:22:13blatant on the part of Donald Trump, who has also had
00:22:16acts of interference in electoral processes. The
00:22:20region, beyond tariffs, had interference in the legislative
00:22:24electoral process in Argentina, interference in the
00:22:27presidential electoral process in
00:22:30Honduras, interference in the presidential electoral
00:22:34process in Colombia also tries to have it
00:22:37in the case of Brazil, and currently we clearly see
00:22:41how the tariffs that were imposed on
00:22:44Brazil with various excuses, in reality, all they
00:22:48seek is to try to harm the Brazilian economy and
00:22:52try to harm the image of the current president, Luiz Inácio
00:22:56Lula da Silva, to favor a political
00:22:59ally, which is Bolsonarism, the
00:23:02clan. In Mexico, the constant threat of
00:23:06massive tariffs of 25% operates as a
00:23:09blackmail mechanism over Claudia Sheinbaum's mandate. The White
00:23:13House conditions trade to force the rollback of sovereign
00:23:16energy policies and to erode popular support for the ruling party,
00:23:20seeking to open political space for the traditional conservative opposition that
00:23:24promotes unrestricted alignment with the dictates
00:23:27of the United States. The customs offensive also punishes
00:23:31any attempt at monetary autonomy against the dollar in the
00:23:34Southern Cone by penalizing nations that diversify their
00:23:38reserves or trade in local currencies. Washington
00:23:41tries to curb the influence of the BRICS and pressure electorates
00:23:44through financial unease, installing the narrative
00:23:48that only right-wing governments guarantee economic
00:23:52stability and tax exemptions from the White
00:23:54House. Faced with the economic siege and electoral interference,
00:23:58the sovereign blocs of the continent strengthen their multilateral alliances
00:24:02with China and emerging countries. The strategic
00:24:05response of the besieged administrations has been to consolidate
00:24:09South-South trade routes and shield their strategic
00:24:12sectors, transforming resistance to tariff
00:24:15asphyxiation into a direct defense of their political
00:24:19self-determination.
00:24:21Donald Trump's government seeks a
00:24:24neocolonial recomposition
00:24:27throughout the region. To do this, it tries
00:24:31to delegitimize sovereign
00:24:34processes, as is the case in
00:24:37Mexico, as is the case in Brazil,
00:24:41to attack popular
00:24:43processes, as was the entire system of
00:24:47threats and bombing
00:24:50in Venezuela, the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and
00:24:54Cilia Flores, the threats against Nicaragua,
00:24:58the threats and the siege,
00:25:01which is increasingly brutal, right? With that
00:25:04blockade against Cuba, so it seeks
00:25:08to consolidate a process of
00:25:12neocolonial recomposition, in which
00:25:14the United States is the center of the colony
00:25:18and the rest of the countries are peripheral
00:25:21countries that must respond to
00:25:24that, to that project, and in
00:25:27that sense, the tariffs, the economic
00:25:30pressure, the threats, the recent
00:25:34tour of Marco Rubio through the region, the
00:25:37document issued by the State Department
00:25:40pointing to the popular processes in the region
00:25:44as part of a
00:25:47system that seeks to destroy the
00:25:50Western way of life. Trump's tariffs did not
00:25:54subdue the countries of the region, on the contrary,
00:25:58they pushed them to seek new trade partners,
00:26:02new forms of
00:26:04financing, greater rapprochement with China and the
00:26:08BRICS. Economic pressure does not guarantee
00:26:11obedience, that is the lesson. And when commercial blackmail does not
00:26:15work, Washington imposes its logic: threaten,
00:26:18punish and use its force to try to impose its
00:26:22interests. Trump did not manage to subdue the region,
00:26:25he managed to make the region seek how to defend itself from
00:26:29the United States. And in the cases where he imposed force,
00:26:32diplomacy gained ground to be able to coexist with his
00:26:36aggression, we put the point in the law.
00:27:02The most important historical weapon that imperialists have had against the
00:27:06peoples of Africa and in all parts of the world, has been
00:27:10division, division among countries, division among
00:27:13ethnic groups, division among revolutionary forces.
00:27:17If there's one thing we'd like to emphasize in these brief words, it's that
00:27:20unity must be a permanent motto for all of us who
00:27:23oppose the system of domination that
00:27:26imperialism seeks to preserve. Fidel
00:27:29Castro. September 14, 1978.
00:27:33Speech delivered at the inaugural session of the international
00:27:36solidarity conference with the struggle of African and
00:27:40Arab peoples against imperialism and reaction held at Africa
00:27:44Hall, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
00:30:40rejected the threats of the president of
00:30:43Spriella to university autonomy after
00:30:46announcing the creation of security protocols that
00:30:50will allow the entry of police forces to the
00:30:53campuses. More in I'll
00:30:56tell you.
