00:06:55administration meanwhile has reportedly ruled out direct
00:06:58military support for Saudi Arabia against the hoothis offering intelligence
00:07:02assistance. instead. our correspondent Andy Roschen has
00:07:06details on
00:07:07that. as
00:07:10Saudi Arabia decried Hooti attacks on Monday that it
00:07:14says injured over dozen civilians, the Saudis vowed to
00:07:18step up their retaliation under the United Nations rules of
00:07:22self-defense. But Riyad will not be getting military help from the
00:07:25Trump team, which is rejecting the idea of US air strikes on
00:07:29the hooties, and instead offering intelligent support.
00:07:33The US did launch a couple months of air attacks on the hooties
00:07:37last year and lost some plains in the process. The Trump team
00:07:41reportedly does not... want to open up new front in the conflict and wants
00:07:45to concentrate on the war with Iran, but Washington does paint a
00:07:49picture that the U.S. has things under control. uh,
00:07:53we've been in constant contact with the Emirates, the Saudis and others who are
00:07:56affected in the region, so it's something the United States administration is very much
00:08:00top of. uh, we've also been engaged in direct conversations
00:08:04with the hoothies themselves. it's notable that the US is
00:08:07communicating directly with the hooties. presidential administrations
00:08:11don't normally... communicate with groups that they consider terror
00:08:15organizations. tensions between the Saudis and the Houtis
00:08:18escalated in June, when after year's long
00:08:22truce, houti delegation returned to Yemen following the
00:08:25funeral of Iran's supreme leader, and the
00:08:29Saudis bombed the airport so that the
00:08:32delegation could not land there, they had to land in Hoda,
00:08:36Hodeba instead, and with the encouragement the
00:08:39Iranians, with intelligence support from the Iranians, "the Houti's decided
00:08:43that they would retaliate. I think it was really ill-advised the Saudis
00:08:47and apparently they were encouraged by the Trump
00:08:50administration to interfere with that Houti
00:08:53delegation. And the world is beginning to feel the effects the recent
00:08:57attack on Saudi Arabia's east-west pipeline, which is
00:09:01believed to carry around 5% the global oil
00:09:04supply. Reuters reports that repairs to the pipeline
00:09:08could take five to six weeks. On Monday, oil prices hit.
00:09:12$110 a barrel, about $16 below the
00:09:16peak reached during the Iran war, and in the US, the price
00:09:20of diesel, which powers the shipping industry, has hit record daily
00:09:24highs for about a week, already fueled by the war in
00:09:27Iran, Ukrainian attacks on Russia, and by China
00:09:31limiting its exports to save more oil for itself, and
00:09:34now by the conflict between Saudi Arabia and the

00:09:48Khalid. With the hoothies seemingly gaining ground, and
00:09:52you couple that with Saudi Arabia reportedly asking for wanting military
00:09:56assistance from the United States, does that suggest that
00:09:58actually um, the Saudi Led coalition, despite all of its air
00:10:02strink is struggling to contain the hoothies
00:10:04militarily. Well, thanks for having me,
00:10:08obviously that's the case, and the surprising quick.
00:10:12the pro government forces supported by Saudi, enabling
00:10:16the Hithis to control the strategic city of mocca and get
00:10:20closer to Babel Mandab straight is very
00:10:24clear. evidence the trouble
00:10:27facing the Saudi backed government and even the Saudi
00:10:31military effort inside Yemen itself, as you know
00:10:34there was a long war between Saudi Arabia and the hoothis in Yemen
00:10:38for at least six years before reaching a very shaky truth
00:10:42and definitely the linkages between the
00:10:45hies and Iran, considering that Iran is their main
00:10:49backer is very important factor to
00:10:53consider in this ongo escalation
00:10:56while the United States is tightening the squeeze on the Iranians in
00:11:00the straight of hormos, it's very clear that the
00:11:04Iranians managed to push the houties to open another very
00:11:07important front to further to further put pressure
00:11:11on the US administration to stop its war and reach some sort of an
00:11:15agreement. now I mean this is not officially confirmed, but there are reports in the
00:11:18media that the US is reluctant to offer Saudi Arabia
00:11:22anything beyond intelligence information that... at this point, does
00:11:26this, if that was the case, would that suggest you there, perhaps
00:11:30increasingly strained relationship, because this is a USA asking for help,
00:11:34it seems like it needs that help, why would the US not be
00:11:37forthcoming? well, probably the United
00:11:40States has learned from the experience the bombing campaign they
00:11:44led almost like slightly more than year ago against Yaman for
00:11:48almost two months, as you mentioned in your report, and after that kind of bombing
00:11:52campaign, President Trump obviously. admitted
00:11:55the truth that the Saudis learned over many years, which is that the
00:11:59geographic nature of Yemen, the the kind of
00:12:03group, the Hothis and their ideology makes it difficult
00:12:06to totally end the presence and the
00:12:10control of this group over big parts and influential parts of
00:12:14Yemen, so I mean there are conflicting reports to be honest, Neil,
00:12:18between the fact that the Saudis have asked for military
00:12:21support or they were asking for the US diplomatic support. As we have
00:12:25seen uh J. Devans, the vice president the United States said that they were in
00:12:29direct contact with the houties, so probably uh within the current
00:12:33complicated situation within the war against Iran, the United States is
00:12:37not willing to open another major front, and it was pretty significant the
00:12:41statement made by Trump by saying that practically speaking he doesn't
00:12:44have a problem with the Hithies, that they assured them that the US ships
00:12:48will be able to navigate through the Red Sea and that they only had a problem with one
00:12:52country which is Saudi Arabia, there are... other reports that
00:12:55Gulf nations are reconsidering their relation with the United
00:12:59States because of failing to listen to their desire to
00:13:03end this war or to put their interest into consideration, but
00:13:06generally speaking, it seems that the Saudis are inching closer
00:13:10towards seeking diplomatic settlements with the Hothis and not
00:13:14escalate, because the world cannot take the closure of Babel Manda beside
00:13:18the straight of hormos and I'm sure that President Trump recognizes that because already
00:13:22the price of oil is over $107. so if we close the
00:13:26Babel Mandab and there is oil coming out from Saudi Arabia plus the
00:13:30damage to its pipelines, it's definitely a disaster for the world
00:13:33economy. yeah, that's an interesting point you made, because just as we were coming on
00:13:37air, I saw report, it it was information coming from
00:13:41French diplomats who said that the issue was being brought forward
00:13:45to the UN security council, they want to discuss the
00:13:48situation in the Babab straight, so as you were saying is this now becoming
00:13:52a global concern if the... he's getting tight
00:13:56grip on that straight that everybody could
00:13:59suffer, certainly, certainly,
00:14:02and mean it's
00:14:03not a coincidence that the saudi crime prince is supposedly going to visit Egypt and
00:14:07meet with Egyptian president today, as you know
00:14:11if the balbel mandab straight is being closed, this means the closure the suwese
00:14:15canal as well, so now you have the the hormos straight
00:14:18closed, the babil mandab closed and there is no ships going
00:14:22through this wais canal, so that's certainly a match. of international
00:14:26concern, although what what matters at the end, Neil, on the ground
00:14:29is that the Hies proved that they can launch this kind of
00:14:33a symmetrical war, because as even referred to the Saudi continued military
00:14:37strikes, just few missiles from the Yemani side, from the houti
00:14:41side, targeting the east, west Saudi
00:14:45pipeline, transferring millions of tons is enough to
00:14:49uh, you know, cause the Saudi economy lot of damage and the world lot of
00:14:53damage, so there is certainly... I mean it's
00:14:55not a coincidence that we hear again from Trump
00:14:58yesterday that he's again open to some sort of negotiations with
00:15:02Iran, because there is certainly this kind of linkage, if the war slows down
00:15:06with Iran, if this war stops, probably you will get calm on the
00:15:10Yemani front, on the Lebanese front and definitely on the Iraqi front as
00:15:14well, yeah I just want to get a bit more on that, that the link between the two conflicts,
00:15:18so we had Saudi Arabia pull out a Monday's meeting with Iran and a man,
00:15:22possibly linked to what's happening with them on the...
00:15:25battlefront um, would you say that the conflict in Yemen,
00:15:29if that escalates further, could that pour
00:15:32fuel on the fire in, establishing safe roots in the straight of
00:15:36horms and therefore? hamper attempts ease the
00:15:40conflicts in in between Iran and the United
00:15:42States, definitely, I mean already
00:15:46the Iranians have are clearly feeling the pressure the US
00:15:50sanctions and the tightening of passage
00:15:54through the straight of hormos for Iranian oil, and
00:15:58obviously
00:15:59the the key you know kind of leverage that the
00:16:02Iranians have is causing economic tremendous economic pain to the
00:16:06United States. especially when the US president and the Republican
00:16:10Party are facing very dissatisfied US public in the
00:16:14upcoming mid-term elections, but more than that, I mean it's again
00:16:18not a American Iranian issue here, it's you know the
00:16:21interests of many world countries at stake, and perhaps
00:16:25you know China will come up with something if
00:16:28the the Chinese president is due to meet with the American president, I mean
00:16:32but definitely Trump and the US administration do not
00:16:35want to see ' a further escalation,
00:16:39very dangerous one that affects the US consumers
00:16:43ahead the upcoming mid-term elections and that's why mean you can see some
00:16:47renewal of diplomatic effort to
00:16:50basically renew the US Iranian negotiations
00:16:54and perhaps starting from there you can see uh attempt
00:16:58to calm the yemani saudi front as well as the
00:17:01other fronts such as Lebanon and Israel because again all
00:17:05them are rather interconnected. Khalid, fascinating to get

00:18:20yes, conflicting narratives continue since this war
00:18:24started, we have heard so many conflicting narratives from Iran and the
00:18:28United States, basically now the United States Trump
00:18:32himself is saying that the straight has been cleared
00:18:35of minds, but the IR gc says that this straight is not
00:18:39cleared of mines and the latest statement by
00:18:43IRGC as you said says that vessel, this is
00:18:47elgaya vessel, a panamanian flagged
00:18:50tanker hit a naval mine in the
00:18:54southern corridor the straight of hormos, we know this southern
00:18:57corridor has been a bone of contention between
00:19:01Iran and the United States, Iran does not approve of
00:19:05this southern lane that has been... designated by Oman
00:19:09and the United States, so the IRGC says that that vessel hit a
00:19:13mine over there, but the sentcom, the US
00:19:17military says that the reason
00:19:21for the attack, I mean the attack was due to a drone a
00:19:24drone, an Iranian drone hitting this vessel, not
00:19:27a naval mine, separately, Iran has
00:19:31reported attack on fishing boats, civilian
00:19:35fishing boats the... port of Kargan, this is
00:19:39a port along the eastern uh coast
00:19:43the straight of Formus. Iran says several
00:19:46fishermen have gone missing as result of that attack which Iranian media
00:19:50has attributed to the United States,
00:19:54and we have heard on so many occasions Iranian officials reporting
00:19:58civilian casualties as result of US air
00:20:02strikes.
00:20:03the the last major one happened earlier this month when a
00:20:07US strike, according to Iranians hit a wedding in
00:20:11the city of Kuhastak along the straight of
00:20:15Hormus, and on Sunday also Iran
00:20:18reported attack a civilian ship and a container
00:20:22ship in the straight of Hormus again, and as
00:20:25result of that attack Iran says that one person has been
00:20:29killed and several several others including Pakistani
00:20:32nationals were injured, and at the same
00:20:36time Iran has reported shooting down a us
00:20:40mq1 drone over
00:20:41the straight of hormo, so this skirmishes continue both
00:20:45in air on the sea as the two
00:20:49sides. uh, it seems that the two sides are not close to
00:20:53any sort of political settlement. yeah, military things seem to be
00:20:57deteriorating in terms of freeing, opening and access to
00:21:01the straight of horm. mean, there had been hope that yesterday, monday there was going to be the
00:21:05meeting, iran aman, foreign ministers the gulf states to come to some
00:21:09kind of agreement, we know that was postponed. do we know any details
00:21:13though about what the shipping lanes might look like,
00:21:17what details are there about any anything agreed between? run and a
00:21:20man.
00:21:24yes, Iran says that an interim
00:21:27agreement, a temporary arrangement has been reached with oman
00:21:31about the shipping lanes and shipping routes in
00:21:35the straight of armus, but the latest reported attack by the IRGC
00:21:39shows that probably that agreement is not being
00:21:43implemented. well, Iran and Oman say that they have agreed
00:21:46on roots in the straight of hormous and inbound
00:21:50route to the north of this straight, this route would
00:21:53be in Iranian territorial waters, the inbound route, and the
00:21:57outbound root is in the south the straight, most of it is in
00:22:01Omani waters, one tiny part of
00:22:03it is in Iranian waters, so these lines,
00:22:07these lanes, these roots, these corridors are supposed to be approved
00:22:11by both countries, but as I just said, the latest
00:22:15attack shows that probably this agreement is not being implemented,
00:22:19yesterday on Monday the spokesperson for Iran's foreign ministry
00:22:23said that the agreement with Oman has been finalized and the two
00:22:26countries are in consultation to determine how and when
00:22:30to announce it and register it with the international maritime

00:22:41Ryan Bole is a senior Middle East and North Africa analyst at the Risk
00:22:45Assistance Network Exchange Rain. He says Washington currently has a little
00:22:48incentive. its attacks on Iran,
00:22:52from the American perspective, their low ammunitions,
00:22:55the the Pentagon Inspector General came out public with how low those munitions
00:22:59are, and so it's no secret that the Americans have simply run out the
00:23:03high-end equipment that they prefer for this kind of war, and the political will
00:23:06in Washington is also very low for regional escalation, plus we're
00:23:10also dealing with all the economic effects the closure of Hormus from
00:23:14higher than normal bond rates, to growing inflation worries
00:23:18to higher gas prices. "there's a lot of reasons that the US wants to to not
00:23:22seize a single moment uh to return to that escalation that we saw
00:23:26in the spring from the Iranian perspective it's similar in that they believe that their
00:23:30current strategy is paying off against the Americans, undermining their
00:23:33economy, undermining their political will, so there's not a strong incentive
00:23:37to go back to a full-scale escalation unless they are provoked by the
00:23:41Americans first, and so we that's where we're at is we're looking at the Americans
00:23:45as the first movers for escalation, but at least at the moment there's
00:23:49not a..." driver to do so at the scale we saw earlier this
00:23:53year. uh, President Trump has been pretty clear that he thinks that this is about
00:23:56his legacy, he thinks it is about solving the Iran problem wholesale,
00:24:00which means that that sort of implies that proxies and missiles will come back into a
00:24:04negotiation process if one ever begins uh, because after all
00:24:08that's that's what he sold the war about, was this comprehensive
00:24:12reframing the Iran threat, the Iran challenge, even regime
00:24:15change from his perspective, but the more narrow approaches seem to be...
00:24:20right now restoring freedom of navigation around Hormus and getting the
00:24:24Iranians back to nuclear uh program talks uh that I think
00:24:28would be major success for this administration, particularly if they can do it
00:24:31before the mid-terms. I just don't see any signs that the Iranians are willing to give them
00:24:35that victory uh in that timeline. Turkish
00:24:39president Rijip Tygan says that Anchorer is stepping up its role
00:24:43addressing challenges facing the region and the wider Muslim
00:24:46world, pointing to rising tensions in the Gulf. He says:
00:25:50purpose of this step is for these three countries to come together and god
00:25:53willing send a signal from here to the muslim world. there are
00:25:57positive developments and we will achieve this as

00:27:43bit red flag for risk assets such as stocks at the moment,
00:27:47given what they say about the inflation out and by extension
00:27:50monetary policy and how that may impact growth a corporate and economic
00:27:54level moving forward, so not a lot of good news for stock markets
00:27:58right now, i think traders like to see a little bit of a... are
00:28:02released in terms of that oil price and or bond yields to get some momentum
00:28:06back, so I guess lot will come down to this week - what message we get from the
00:28:10federal reserve and whether they're leaning on the hawkish or dovish side as to
00:28:14whether stocks can regain their mojale
