00:04:21struggling to keep their attention, or a school
00:04:25bell ringing through the
00:04:27in hallways when i "I think of
00:04:30school, I think of chock. I still picture it in my
00:04:34hands, nervously trying
00:04:36of to solve math problem on the
00:04:38blackbard. Welcome
00:04:42to the world.
00:04:46My own school days are long gone, but for my
00:04:49daughter, they have yet to
00:04:51begin.

00:05:00to school, I worry that she'll be confronted with more frightening
00:05:03things than solving math problems in front
00:05:06of the class. 19 children and two teachers were
00:05:10killed at rob elementary school in. Texas, city leaders in
00:05:14Uvalde are calling for privacy and compassion for the families the
00:05:18victims and survivors. I remember watching the news about the
00:05:21school shooting in Uvaldi. My daughter was two months old and
00:05:25sleeping in my lab, oblivious to what was happening just a couple towns
00:05:29away from
00:05:30us.
00:05:34Since that day I keep wondering, how can we keep her
00:05:38safe a world like
00:05:40this? This morning, flags are
00:05:43flying at half staff across Texas, marking one year since one the
00:05:47worst school shootings in American history. One year ago today, an
00:05:5118-year-old gunman broke into an elementary school in Uvaldi, killing
00:05:5519 children and two teachers. For many, the reminders
00:05:58the tragedy are everywhere, with an uptick in school shootings
00:06:02and the fears that come with them, lot of Texas parents are
00:06:06wondering how best to protect their kids while setting them up
00:06:10for success in the future.

00:06:25mam, it might be a little bit of an awkward question, but do you guys have some sort of
00:06:29safety plan in case of a school shooting happening?
00:06:33um, we're getting introduced to all this shooting stuff just
00:06:36now, okay, um, so we we do lockdowns,
00:06:40we do um, we do those kind of... drills um, but right now
00:06:44with active shooter we are in the process of um
00:06:48figuring all that stuff out. okay, it's just we never thought that we would
00:06:52have to be going to training for this. yeah, i'm asking because i'm i
00:06:56just moved here from belgium about four years ago
00:06:59so um and we never had a school shooting in Belgium
00:07:01so for me this is all new and i'm a little bit worried about it. yeah, i
00:07:05had been born and raised here in Austin. um and this
00:07:09whole yuvanda thing i think that kind of hit us home. um
00:07:13being so close

00:07:18but yes mam, um, we're hoping that never happens to us, um,
00:07:22and we do have locked doors and all that good stuff, um,
00:07:25okay, but um, a shooter plan, not

00:08:04with another type of safeness, so
00:08:08you go out and you know that you cannot carry your necklace, you know that you need
00:08:12to be paying attention of your surrounders and stuff like that, it's whole other
00:08:16level, but you did not have the fear to send your kid
00:08:20to school, i can't record going to
00:08:24school feeling scared of my mom talking to me,
00:08:27mean if he somebody comes to the school to true you, you got now where to
00:08:31go, so didn't grew up with that, so when zira would go
00:08:34to this daycare, what would like a
00:08:38the safety plan look like here, we are train.
00:08:43for lockdowns and unsafe buildings and stuff like that, but an
00:08:46active shooter we haven't, so that's why we wanted
00:08:50to get a
00:08:51training,
00:09:09and if you look at last year, look at this. in
00:09:122022, not a single week passed without at least
00:09:16four mass shooting events, it's crazy, just as we
00:09:20prepare for fires and floods and tornadoes and earthquakes,
00:09:23sadly we got to start thinking about this stuff too, so what
00:09:27we're going to talk about today is really the work of many many, i want the teachers to be the
00:09:31best they can be, teaching the kids the proper way and shaping those
00:09:35young minds, uh, i don't want them to be combat warriors, that's not fair, they
00:09:39didn't sign up for that, but when i saw the numbers and 'wow, less than
00:09:43half of early childhood programs aren't prepared for an active
00:09:47shooter, we got to do something about that.
00:09:49I don't want to minimize the impact that you all are going to have as the initial
00:09:53responder, because your actions, or
00:09:56inactions, are really going to set the stage on how this goes,
00:10:00so sometimes hiding might be the best choice, sometimes running might be the best
00:10:04choice, sometimes you're going to have no choice but to defend yourself,
00:10:07right? So here they are, run, hide and fight, so
00:10:11let's look at the run option.' Vamos

00:10:34So we got everybody out in under 20 seconds, which is simply amazing,

00:11:47we're really not just getting into a fair fight here, we're trying to defend and
00:11:51survive, but now we have to...
00:11:55thinking, okay, if I'm in there and I i'm tramped in there, I
00:11:59have other way out, what am I going to do? Well, I'm going to grab this, right?
00:12:03You, first thing I can find, what if somebody comes in, I can squirt him in the eyes, I can maybe hit
00:12:06him over the head with this, I'm going to try to find anything that I can to defend
00:12:10myself.
00:12:19I just see those teachers standing there with like tools that they
00:12:23find, like blocks and stuff, and I'm just... how on earth are
00:12:27are they going to defend themselves with somebody coming in with like a machine
00:12:29gun?
00:12:34well i think there's a couple different things that we can you know think
00:12:37about: pair of scissors is obviously not going to be very good weapon
00:12:41of choice against a machine gun, but i got to tell you if i'm pinned
00:12:45in room and that's
00:12:46the only thing i have, i'm going to make
00:12:48a go at it cuz i don't want it to be easy to kill me, i'm going to make it as difficult as
00:12:52possible for that person, maybe i can't that person down,
00:12:56maybe i can buy some time so that others aren't killed or injured, so that's kind of what
00:13:00the mentality sadly has to
00:13:02be,
00:13:22i don't know how you you do a drill with... with
00:13:25babies,
00:13:29i don't know how that works to be
00:13:31honest,
00:13:36the drill that you you guys saw, are the kids
00:13:40involved in in these drills? well, what we saw it was like
00:13:44a training for the teachers, mhm, um,
00:13:47and so i think the teachers have to do it with the kids a few times a
00:13:51year, but we didn't really see that, and i also don't think that the kids realize. it yet
00:13:55at that young age,
00:13:58keep it, keep, but I am worried about when when the kids get older, so
00:14:02if you put side there, when she gets older, when she starts to realize what
00:14:06this is about, what it's going to do to
00:14:08her,
00:14:18these sounds are clues for you to tune in and get somewhere safe,

00:14:25about staying
00:14:27quiet. when we
00:14:30hear lockdown, locks, lights
00:14:34out of sight. we need to stay quiet in our hiding

00:15:06hear announcement that says "run hide fight", or you might hear a noise that
00:15:10sounds like a weapon, or maybe you see a bad guy and you're all by yourself
00:15:14in the hallway. okay, what would you do in that situation? if
00:15:18all the close our door and except one the first
00:15:21graders, you can go in there and that should be number one, but let's..." say
00:15:25that there is no way to go into another class because the
00:15:29doors are are shut and they're locked or there's just nobody else in
00:15:33here and you don't know what to do, you can hide somewhere on the playground,
00:15:37okay? schools are a very safe place to be, you're safe
00:15:40here, you did 21 laps,
00:15:44nice, i forced my ankle, well maybe that's why your ankle
00:15:47hurts, i saw
00:15:51how was the rest of your lunch, i'm sorry i can only stay for few
00:15:54minutes, all
00:15:57right, you guys in lego world

00:16:12every day that I walk my children to school, I say, I love you, and I
00:16:16watch them, and just breathe, because that's all I can
00:16:20do, and hope that everyone is doing their
00:16:24job to protect
00:16:25them,
00:16:30whether they want to or not, that this is their life, and they're
00:16:34having to do these active shooter drills and lockdowns.
00:16:38and they're playing war
00:16:40games, what happens during your
00:16:43drills? mommy doesn't know what you guys do,
00:16:47well for the lockdown drills um um the
00:16:51principal will say on the announcement, it's a lockdown
00:16:54drill, lock your doors and we hide
00:16:57behind our shelves, so but we
00:17:01can't do anything else, sometimes whenever we do the videos no one ever
00:17:05tells us, our teachers don't tell if it's a real one or
00:17:09just practice so i get scared sometimes to see if
00:17:13it's real or if it's just a
00:17:16drill and if we
00:17:19don't um get up and scooter chairs quietly and
00:17:23we're a lot loud we start over and do it
00:17:27again until we can make it good you want to show
00:17:31me all right say the
00:17:34drone so i can teachers lock your doors Teachers,
00:17:38lock your doors, this is
00:17:39lockdown,
00:17:55my daughter said that uh, it helps her to
00:17:57prepare and that makes me so
00:18:01sad to think that she has to prepare for
00:18:05such event.

00:18:26problem, I a professor of public health in New Mexico State
00:18:30University, um, my research has focused on how
00:18:34schools are preparing and what would they do in?
00:18:37schools
00:18:37certain
00:18:45situations, in
00:18:46most your so neighborhood, my neighborhood have security
00:18:49cameras, backpack checks, metal detectors, lock doors,
00:18:53lockdown drill, preparing students for math shooting, it looks similar to the
00:18:57questions that you've done, this is a
00:19:01drill, I repeat, this is a drill, we are a level
00:19:05three lockdown, need you to go down, lock the
00:19:08door, the problem is they have not been able to stop a mass
00:19:12shooting, that backside, get into the closet, go on the closet, turn
00:19:16the light on until we get in there, the intruder is in the
00:19:19lives, let's go, get the
00:19:23chairs up there, let's go, the rest of you get in the closet, let's
00:19:26go, get in the
00:19:28closet, there is no
00:19:31documented evidence that we could stop a mass shooting with this
00:19:35kind of an approach. You're
00:19:38quiet. Keep your hands to
00:19:41yourself.
00:19:46That's a typical American school now. It has become a war zone.
00:19:50No one is asking, is this conducive to learning,
00:19:52education?
00:19:57Why are we creating this climate of fear? A
00:20:01palace, a fortress. No place in the world would you see this a developed
00:20:05nation.
00:20:09"there are studies to show that kids have felt vulnerable and
00:20:13distressed because these exposures and that's why the whole idea has
00:20:17become
00:20:17controversial,
00:20:27we have fire drills, lockdown,
00:20:29tornado, our last drill,
00:20:33lockdown drill uh, we did like a full thing we..."
00:20:37ripped apart the room, we grabbed tables and we shoved it at the
00:20:41door like and it active and all all the kids were
00:20:45scared and um i was scared because the the
00:20:49mic did not say lockdown drill or didn't hear it
00:20:52so i thought it was a real lockdown, i was trying my best to
00:20:56hide and it made a little scared and
00:21:00nervous because um didn't
00:21:03i didn't feel safe at school, nobody feels
00:21:07safe, nobody feels safe at
00:21:10school, it's it's never really safe, kind of
00:21:14it's not really safe
00:21:15sometimes, i think it'll
00:21:19probably happen in our school because
00:21:23people sometimes go insane and they might want
00:21:26to like take their anchor out on kids
00:21:30so they might want to come to our school and like take their anchor out
00:21:34on them by killing us
00:21:36maybe i don't i
00:21:40really don't like it because there's a lot of bad people in the world
00:21:43yeah we try not to think about thomorts
00:21:46or else we kind of get like uh like thinking about
00:21:50got it like kind of like oh school shooting is going to happen
00:21:53today yeah that's not something that you want to think about right yeah
00:21:57no
00:22:06wit about that okay there's no
00:22:08possible i think that
00:22:12um some the teachers should have like um a
00:22:15pistol or something hidden in the classroom to protect the
00:22:19students 'yeah, i think that too,
00:22:22because um, because if the person does have a gun it
00:22:26would be nice to have some protection like
00:22:2922 rifles, 22 long rifles, at least a bb gun
00:22:33for our class ever for every single
00:22:36class, it would it would cost a little bit,
00:22:39but it it would be worth for the
00:22:42school for keeping students
00:23:01daughter will feel the same. When I was
00:23:05kid, this never crossed my
00:23:06mind, but I
00:23:10guess things were different back then, and
00:23:14this is
00:23:15America.
00:23:31I was a high school teacher for 20
00:23:33years, you started hearing of school shootings
00:23:37and I would think what I would do, I didn't want to
00:23:41um watch something happen or be victim, I wanted to be
00:23:45proactive. I remember coming home from school and talking to
00:23:49Jeff all the... time about different scenarios, what would I do if this happened,
00:23:53what would I do if that happened, I want to protect my kids,
00:23:57so we were able to collaborate together and come up with a
00:24:00good system that would work for teachers. The
00:24:04point of this is to have trained guardians, you can put signs on your school
00:24:08that say we have armed staff, and that's a deterrent, you're you're
00:24:12making the school a hard target, so somebody's not going to want to breach that, and
00:24:16that's the number one goal the guardian program. Number two goal would be,
00:24:20to actually use deadly force in the event that there's a
00:24:22shooter,
00:24:29so an important component about the school guardians is their
00:24:32arms,
00:24:39lot of people think we're just giving guns to teachers, and that's not
00:24:42it, so part of our training includes
00:24:46scenario training on the campus.
00:24:55so we have someone that's a bad guy, we actually put the
00:24:59guardian staff a shooting
00:25:01situation where they have to defend themselves or
00:25:05take out the
00:25:06shooter,
00:25:10and that's as close to realistic as we can make
00:25:13it, it's not just for
00:25:16teachers, it's for all school staff.
00:25:23administration, maintenance, it and stuff like that, most of those
00:25:27people are what we call
00:25:28seekers, so if there's
00:25:31actually a threat on campus, they would seek the threat to stop
00:25:35it,
00:25:39and then we have what we call classroom defenders like what Terry would have
00:25:42been, uh, we don't ever tell a teacher to leave their classroom, they need to say with
00:25:46their kids, so if the shooter happened to come in that room then they can defend. that
00:25:50classroom, so there's really two types of guardians that we look
00:25:53out. all
00:25:56right, here's your weapon, here's
00:25:58your sword,
00:26:01okay,
00:26:02here we go.
00:26:16to say that uh, the thought of this
00:26:20happening in my daughter's school, yeah, it
00:26:24scares
00:26:26me, it is, it's frightening, yeah, um, most of our
00:26:31through people pretty
00:26:31that that, emotional. go because
00:26:32it's it's on their home campus, it's their turf. do you
00:26:36feel like this can be traumatizing to teachers? just going through the training?
00:26:40uh, i think the scenario training can be to point. i don't think it's to the
00:26:43point where it's going to cause them problems, but i think it's going to help
00:26:47them face the reality of if this happens, this is what it's going to be like, and
00:26:51it's just it's not everybody can do
00:26:53this.
00:26:58how did it feel for you as teacher carrying again? i would
00:27:01say it...
00:27:02when did raise my level of confidence and security,
00:27:06and I even told my students, I
00:27:08um, would introduce myself and we would start the school year, I
00:27:11would say, I just want you to know that no matter my
00:27:13what happens, I will life, protect I'm
00:27:15you here with for you in every aspect, not just education,
00:27:18and um, it's just the care that you have for your students, it's
00:27:22natural, and by the way, they voted her best teacher the year after
00:27:25that.
00:27:42A lot of people have tendency to do this, they drop their firearm, but
00:27:46when you're in combat, this is combat, you're going to lean
00:27:49out, okay, just a little bit, you're trying not to
00:27:53expose the rest of your body, because this is a target area for the
00:27:56bad guy, I think it's interesting that you say this is combat, so and
00:28:00I'm talking specifically about school. Yes, you refer to it as
00:28:04well, it's combat training, that's what it is, lot of this training,
00:28:08it comes from my experience, other law enforcement officers
00:28:12experience, military experience, um, and
00:28:16it's the way it's been described, and the way we describe it, because
00:28:19we wanted to be bold, is combat training, you are in combat
00:28:23against someone who's trying to kill you, the only other place that you see a situation
00:28:27like this is on the battlefield in a
00:28:29war.
