00:03:58in self-defense, but elections just a month away, more
00:04:02extremist

00:04:08sets out to get 1.86 million gazans to
00:04:12leave their homes over the next seven years, effectively eliminating
00:04:16Gaza's indigenous Palestinian population. So is

00:04:21of platform that will win votes, or will Israely start to identify their
00:04:25own
00:04:26of extremists as an existential threat? Here's a look.

00:04:31me on the horizon and Gaza is firmly in the firing line,
00:04:35becoming a central political wedge for far right figures
00:04:39within Netanyahu's coalition government. With the
00:04:43election set for October 27, prominent
00:04:46hardliners are outdoing each other with
00:04:49of extreme statements against Palestinians
00:04:51of in bid to woo potential voters. But Israel's
00:04:55national security minister, Itamar Benqvira has
00:04:58arguably gone further. than anyone else, ben gavir's
00:05:02disengagement 7-10 plan has made the emptying
00:05:06of Gaza of
00:05:07of Palestinians a critical campaign
00:05:11of pitch. We are: talking about our goals, 25000
00:05:15gassans leaving in the first year is possible, it is possible.
00:05:191.1 million within 3 years and within seven years we can
00:05:23reach almost 1.9 million who will immigrate.
00:05:26it is possible, it is realistic, it is in our hands, it
00:05:30is within our ability. he claims it would involve legal
00:05:34migration roots, financial assistance and agreements with
00:05:37countries willing to receive Palestinians. ben Gavier
00:05:41frames it as not forced expulsion, but as a
00:05:44choice, but critics argue that calling such departures
00:05:48voluntary does not take into account whether people living amid the
00:05:52destruction of war can really be said to have a free
00:05:55choice. his words give many garzans pause for concern,
00:05:59who remain defiant at the prospect of being
00:06:02moved.
00:06:05we will die on the land of gaza. we will not leave it, we will not leave it,
00:06:09godwilling, because we are stead fast, we were born. it, we lived in
00:06:13it, and our grandfathers and fathers, we were born in it, our
00:06:17children grew up in it, so
00:06:18it is very difficult to think of leaving, however, others regard
00:06:22it as little more than an election publicity stunt, which will never come to
00:06:26pass. i believe that this proposal, which is
00:06:29displacement, is nothing more than an electoral card to win over
00:06:33the Israeli water at the ballot box, but i think that
00:06:36Israel hasn't had enough, three years of war, killing and
00:06:40destruction and is... of expelling the native people from
00:06:44their lands in order to seize the land, however, I believe
00:06:48this proposal will not be carried out and will not
00:06:51happen, but the wider political picture is more complex
00:06:55and unclear. Recent polling suggests that there may be no
00:06:59clear path forward for a ruling governing coalition
00:07:03as centrist, right and right-wing forces compete for
00:07:06influence. Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his liquid
00:07:10party have been in power. for years, but in recent
00:07:14years it's bowd to right-wing populism to bolster itself in
00:07:18coalitions with other parties. liquid's popularity
00:07:21plummeted soon after the October 7 attacks by
00:07:25Hamas. Bezalel Smotrich, another high-profile
00:07:28right-winger, Israel's finance minister and head the
00:07:32religious Zionism party, advocates for total
00:07:35annexation the occupied West bank, which they regard
00:07:39as belonging to Israel since antiquity. he has
00:07:43also spear-headed Israel's expansion of illegal
00:07:47settlements into the occupied west bank with the aim of
00:07:51shattering any realistic prospect of two-state solution,
00:07:55and collectively, right-wing parties in Israel are
00:07:58attempting to block Arab parties from running at all.
00:08:02Reuters has reported that anti-Netanyahu parties
00:08:06may inagregate outp pro Netanyahu
00:08:09parties, but no individual party. currently
00:08:13stands to win majority its own. The upcoming election
00:08:17isn't just vote on Bencavier's proposal empty Gaza
00:08:20within a decade. It's referendum on what kind of future
00:08:24Israel will stand for and whether the last three years
00:08:28of upheaval, security operations and its war on
00:08:32Gaza are something Israeli see as part
00:08:36their ongoing
00:08:37future.
00:08:42Joining me now to make sense the Israeli campaign underway and whether
00:08:46extremist platforms are appealing to voters are from Tel Aviv,
00:08:49political analyst and contributor to HTS Akiva
00:08:52Eldar, from Boston, public policy fellow at the American
00:08:56University of Beirot, Rami Khuuri, and from London,
00:09:00historian and professorial research associate at sowas,
00:09:03khiim Brishi. Thanks all so much for being with me, akiva, I'll
00:09:07start with you, you know, my understanding so far, and obviously I'm not in
00:09:11Israel, is that disagreements among
00:09:14candidates are mostly over potential coalition building
00:09:18and
00:09:18you know power distribution, not ending the genocide
00:09:22or changing the approach to the war on Gaza or stopping
00:09:26settler violence, is that what you're saying as well? well,
00:09:30Andrea, I'm afraid that this is not top
00:09:33the agenda of the
00:09:37current campaign, election campaign, it
00:09:40is, between the
00:09:44israelis, the minority on the liberal
00:09:46side, even not
00:09:50the center right headed by
00:09:54Eisencott and
00:09:56Bennett, the the thing is
00:09:59that if you look at the headlines the newspapers
00:10:02today, Israel is victim of
00:10:06smear campaign was the
00:10:10documentary that got ' the broke
00:10:14the record of standing ovation for 25 minutes
00:10:17NASA, which
00:10:20exposes the
00:10:23military. the Israeli
00:10:26IDF standards, moral standards
00:10:29and the mainstream
00:10:32media, let alone the politicians are
00:10:36focusing on the
00:10:40fact that Israel is victim of
00:10:43antisemitism and this
00:10:47is on top of everybody's
00:10:51agenda, so um, what what is
00:10:55happening in Gaza is is
00:10:58hardly in the front pages
00:11:01the mainstream newspapers, the tabloids are not touching
00:11:05it, and everybody is talking
00:11:08about how we
00:11:11can defend and contain
00:11:15the criticism on the conduct of
00:11:18Israel, and the question of
00:11:21b and smutrich whether there are legit. itimate or
00:11:25not is very marginal, Andrea. Okay,
00:11:29I, I understand that NASA, the film that
00:11:32premiered at war that received the standing ovation at Venus. I can
00:11:36understand that that is the headline today, but in the end the
00:11:40campaign will will continue, and those, different agendas
00:11:44will will bring the attention the
00:11:47Israeli, bring the attention the campaign back to the Israeli people.
00:11:51So let ask Heim, if you think what Ben Gavier and the other kind of more.
00:11:55extremists are doing is actually just
00:11:58campaigning or do people like
00:12:02it truly see his plans empty out
00:12:05Palestine as something he can execute and
00:12:09is that what is Israel can rally
00:12:12around? i think it's a
00:12:16mistake to concentrate on ben and smart
00:12:19rich and they are very extreme
00:12:22but so is the rest of Israeli s society
00:12:25and akiva eldar who is
00:12:29very senior um correspondent of
00:12:33arats has been looking at them for years and i
00:12:37agree with him that actually this is not on
00:12:41the agenda of any the parties,
00:12:44not even the Arab parties for that matter, so
00:12:48gaza is not on the agenda because the
00:12:52Israeli media and the Israeli politician have taken
00:12:56it the agenda with the willing
00:12:59support the Israeli population. there
00:13:03isn't in my judgement a strong
00:13:07minority or even a weak minority of
00:13:11Israelis against the genocide. the tel aviv
00:13:14university polls in
00:13:172024 have shown
00:13:20that 97% the respondents
00:13:25of course only Jews were asked to respond
00:13:29agreed that Israel is doing the right thing in
00:13:33Gaza and the poll was run
00:13:36twice in March and in
00:13:39April or May, I don't remember the second
00:13:42date, 2024, and the
00:13:46result was the same, there was 1% difference, so
00:13:50I think that basically Israelis do not want to
00:13:53know... what in their name the IDF is
00:13:57doing in Gaza and when they are
00:14:00told by Israelis, like the filmmakers
00:14:04of NASA, what is going on there, in the
00:14:08words of 24 officers that actually
00:14:12ran the destruction machinery the
00:14:15genocide, they want to arrest
00:14:19them to expel them, and
00:14:22now hundreds of people have... posted that
00:14:26they want to kill them, so this
00:14:29is wrong to concentrate on itamar
00:14:33bengavir as if he's alone
00:14:36trying to kill the people of Gaza and empty
00:14:39Palestine, the Israeli political system,
00:14:43all of it is behind what is
00:14:47happening and Israeli public is behind
00:14:51what is happening, I i think I want this to be very...
00:14:55clear. Okay, let ask Rami then, do you
00:14:58agree with Him there? Do you think that
00:15:00effectively other parties are could be
00:15:04even making the exact same types of plans as as Disengagement
00:15:087-10, they're just doing it more quietly and masking it
00:15:12better? Or are those extremists truly
00:15:15extremists, nobody's taking disengagement 17
00:15:19seriously, or are they ignoring that it is
00:15:23very dangerous undercurrent that? could become reality if
00:15:27these people come to power again at the end of
00:15:30October? well, I agree
00:15:34with my two colleagues broadly in what they're saying, "I
00:15:37think there's a deeper trend here that we're
00:15:41seeing, which I certainly see,
00:15:45and that trend is that what we have seen in
00:15:48Israel, even before the Gaza
00:15:51genocide, in the last seven, eight, nine
00:15:54years, clearly 10 years, you've seen a
00:15:58consistent drift to the right,
00:16:02expressed in public opinion, voting,
00:16:05settlements approval, denying the
00:16:09Palestinians more and more their rights, squeezing them out a slow
00:16:13motion ethnic cleansing process, this has been going on for years and
00:16:16years and Netanyahu's success has been to
00:16:20galvanize these groups and bring them into the
00:16:24mainstream the political leadership, and then get the
00:16:27Americans under the incompetent and
00:16:31racist American government led by Trump now to support this, but
00:16:35what this really shows... is that two historic
00:16:39trends are now kind of peeking, one historic trend
00:16:43is the nature the zionist process, zionism wants to
00:16:47state for the Jews, they started talking about that in
00:16:501840 and then Herzel and then balfore and
00:16:54then 48, so they succeeded, they achieved a
00:16:58state for the Jewish people, and that state has now become
00:17:01extremely right-wing and and and
00:17:04genocidal, and with the silent. or
00:17:08acquiescence the majority of of
00:17:11Israelies. the second trend parallel and part of it really, they're not two
00:17:15trends. the parallel trend is the
00:17:19acquiescence and active participation the United States, Great
00:17:22Britain and other western powers in the genocidal campaign,
00:17:26annexation of land, expansion of settlements,
00:17:30they make some little gestures now and then we won't
00:17:33take imports from a from settlement.
00:17:37but that's really nothing compared to the support like just getting
00:17:4140,000 tons of bombs sent as a gift
00:17:45from the United States of Israel, so the trends of colonial
00:17:48violence against Palestinians and zionist
00:17:52violence against Palestinians are now one trend and they've merged
00:17:56together and that's why they're not, they're not on the campaign, but I
00:18:00mentioned just one last thing, there's a third trend which strikes me as
00:18:03really surprising and puzzling why it's not discussed in the
00:18:06elections.
00:18:14Turkish president has arrived in New York City to
00:18:18attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly. These are live
00:18:22pictures. During his visit he is expected to address the general
00:18:26assembly on Tuesday and hold bilateral
00:18:29meetings with several world
00:18:31leaders. Let's bring in our correspondent Andrew Hopkins who
00:18:35joins us from the Turkish. house in New
00:18:38York. Andrew, what are we expecting
00:18:42from president
00:18:42Erdogan?
00:18:49well, president Erdogan, he touched down at JFK airport in New York just
00:18:53over an hour ago, and as you can see at the moment he's arrived at Turkish
00:18:57House here in the center of New York, this is the building
00:19:00where Turkish diplomats are based while they're representing the
00:19:04country at the United Nations, which is just... across the road
00:19:08actually from where we are, so everything is very close at
00:19:11hand, and as you mentioned, the Turkish President is expected to address
00:19:15the United Nations General Assembly high-level
00:19:19week on Tuesday, this is a week when all the leaders of
00:19:23all the 193 countries which are members the United
00:19:26Nations, come here, they make speeches,
00:19:29they talk about the issues that are important to them, what are the problems
00:19:32and how they should all be dealt with, now another part of this
00:19:36week is that These leaders who attend get to have head to head
00:19:40bilateral meetings with some the other leaders as well, and President
00:19:44Erdouan is no exception to that. We're not sure of
00:19:47his exact excuse me, movements at the moment,
00:19:51except for one which looks pretty likely because the US
00:19:55ambassador to Turkey Tombarac has said he expects a meeting on the
00:19:59sidelines between president Erdwan and President Trump and that's going
00:20:03to, I think arouse quite a bit bit of interest not just in
00:20:07Turkey. but also
00:20:08in the international community, because these two countries have the two
00:20:12biggest militaries in NATO, and yet the United States has
00:20:16imposed sanctions on the Turkish defense
00:20:19industry, and there is a will, a sort of
00:20:22motivation between the two countries, now I spoke to, I've spoken to
00:20:26officials from both countries, and they want to get rid these sanctions as soon
00:20:30as possible, so that they can resume this cooperation
00:20:34in the months and the years ahead, and that's something I think a lot of people... will be
00:20:38looking at when that meeting takes place to see whether there's
00:20:41any movement on that issue, aside from that,
00:20:45there's also likely to be a meeting involving the president
00:20:48the... business council, which is regular annual
00:20:52event when he comes here, and there's also a high-level meeting
00:20:56organized by the UN secretary general Antonio
00:20:59Gutierez, um, which is about the issue of climate
00:21:03change,
00:21:03and of course the Turkish government, Turkia is going to be
00:21:07hosting the UN's climate change summit Cop 31 in
00:21:11Antalia later this
00:21:12year. Okay, yeah, we're looking at those live
00:21:16pictures, uh, President Erdogan talking to...
00:21:21passes by some dignitaries,
00:21:25it seems is flanked by aids and
00:21:28ministers, as you say, we don't have the exact
00:21:31schedule, but we do have some
00:21:34broad idea and the broad strokes of what to
00:21:38expect, i just want to take one the things that you said, Andrew, and i want to sort of drill
00:21:42a bit deeper, if that meeting does
00:21:45happen, as tom baracad suggested,
00:21:49between president and President Donald Trump,
00:21:53one would assume as well that the
00:21:56war with Iran would be high on the agenda as well and
00:22:00any potential Turkish role in bringing that to an
00:22:03end?
00:22:09Yeah, absolutely, because we know that Turkey along with number of other
00:22:13countries, including Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Egypt, have been
00:22:17involved for several months now since quite early. in the
00:22:21conflict, talking to Iran, talking to the United States
00:22:25to try and bring it all to an end, pry try and find a resolution
00:22:28which is appropriate or acceptable
00:22:32for both these countries, I think those discussions are still going
00:22:36on behind the scenes, Hakam Fedan, the Turkish fore minister, he actually gave
00:22:40an interview to local TV channel just a couple of days ago before he
00:22:43came here to New York and he said there are some new proposals on the
00:22:47table between the United States and but he didn't go into details,
00:22:51but I'm sure that work is continuing behind the
00:22:54scenes. I think what's also worth looking out for over the next few days
00:22:58and in particular when the Turkish president makes his speech at the
00:23:02United Nations is, I suspect he may this time,
00:23:06for the first time since the uh the start the Gaza conflict,
00:23:10Israel's attacks more than uh two years ago, nearly three
00:23:14years ago now, is that he will talk about what is happening in the
00:23:18Red Sea, in particular... uh with the hoothies, with Saudi
00:23:21Arabia's concerns about regional instability
00:23:25being caused by these new attacks by the hoothies on Saudi Arabia,
00:23:29because remember in the in the past few weeks we've had
00:23:33new military pact signed between Turkey,
00:23:37Saudi Arabia and Pakistan in which they have agreed to support
00:23:41each other in these kinds of times and Hakan Fedan during that same
00:23:45interview he said that they are willing to give Saudi
00:23:49Arabia some report on some technical issues and
00:23:53the Turkish government has been a little bit more vocal
00:23:56addressing the activities the hoothis in
00:23:59recent days, it certainly hadn't really spoken openly about them
00:24:03very much earlier on in the Gaza conflict, particularly when it
00:24:06was uh carrying out attacks on other ships, ships
00:24:10which the hoothies said were Israeli or linked to
00:24:14Israeli interests, but I think we might hear a bit
00:24:18more strid and uh comments from the Turkish
00:24:22President during that speech uh on Tuesday when he makes it because the
00:24:26change in the geopolitical circumstances and that
00:24:29agreement that has been made with Saudi Arabia yeah and that's a good
00:24:33point because as you say this was
00:24:35probably the firmest comment that
00:24:39we had heard yet from Hakan Fidan showing solidarity
00:24:43with Saudi Arabia and condemning those Hothy
00:24:47attacks as as diplomatic. correspondent, would you say that
00:24:51that was the first sort of clear sign the agreement
00:24:54manifesting in policy, as it plays
00:24:57out?
00:25:03yeah, it seems that way. um, i can feed on the ticket from
00:25:07minister, and also, i think Pakistan have been saying
00:25:11this alliance is pretty similar to
00:25:15article 5ive the NATO alliance charter, which
00:25:19effectively say: is that if one member is attacked then all the other
00:25:22countries should aid it in some way. now the interesting thing
00:25:26about the NATO charter is that although it says
00:25:30other countries have to come to the members, the member in
00:25:34question's aid, um, it doesn't actually say
00:25:38how, so they don't actually necessarily have to get involved
00:25:41militarily, there could be some intelligence support, there should could
00:25:45be some logistic support, and we don't know
00:25:49exactly. that applies for the Mecca defense
00:25:53pact, as it has become known, um, the exact
00:25:56text the agreement hasn't yet been released to the public, and it's
00:26:00still, I believe, needs to be approved by the
00:26:04Turkish Parliament and maybe at that point we may get better
00:26:08idea of what's in it uh, but certainly if the the terms are
00:26:11similar to the NATO charter, then
00:26:15there is some kind of obligation for the countries to support each
00:26:19other, the countries involved, so Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia, but if
00:26:23it is the same, there's no obligation to start directly
00:26:27fighting with the other side, there may be other ways of of
00:26:31helping them, and I think... That's probably what's happening in this case,
00:26:35because they will probably just review each situation its
00:26:38merits and will react or provide help in the most
00:26:42appropriate way they think is possible, and clearly so far they're
00:26:46not really being that forth coming about what
00:26:49exactly that help is going to be. Right, yeah, we
00:26:53see Han fidan next to President
00:26:57Erdogan right now, for those of us, for those who have just joined us
00:27:00and who missed. "the beginning the conversation we had with with
00:27:04Andrew, president Erdogan has arrived in New York, he's going into Turkish
00:27:08House, which I would assume, Andrew, from the shot that we
00:27:12see of you is just behind you, your outside uh Turkish house, and for
00:27:16those who missed the little housekeeping that you did for us, what are we
00:27:19expecting today, and then when do we expect President Erdoan to
00:27:23speak and address the general
00:27:25assembly?"
00:27:32"well, there's not much we're expecting today after his arrival, he's just had
00:27:36a 10-hour flight uh from Turkey, so I
00:27:40think he's probably going to have rest once he's uh met some the
00:27:44supporters who
00:27:44have been waiting for him outside the Turkish house here in New York near
00:27:48the United Nations building. Tomorrow uh,
00:27:52we believe there's likely to be few these head-to-head meetings
00:27:56with uh the Turkish President and other leaders who are here to
00:27:59attend the UN General Assembly again." that
00:28:03list, those meetings tomorrow haven't been officially released,
00:28:06then I think when we get onto Tuesday, when the high level week
00:28:10at the United Nations really gets underway earnest, we've got the Turkish
00:28:14President speech then, and I think we're going to see quite a
00:28:18increase in the number of people is going to be meeting on the sidelines and as I
00:28:22mentioned uh, it seems likely that the meeting with Donald
00:28:25Trump will take place as well, it seems Tuesday is the most
00:28:29appropriate at the moment, although again not officially... announced,
00:28:33but they're both due to make their speeches on the same day, so it make the
00:28:37most sense, because they're both round and about in the same building
00:28:41on that day. um, wednesday, more
00:28:45uh, head to head meetings we're going to have in wednesday and thursday
00:28:49this uh the meetings with the uh us turkish
00:28:52trade council, also the high level uh
00:28:56climate change meeting which has been organized by the UN secretary general
00:29:00Antonio Gutierres, level representation expected
00:29:04there by Turkey, because of course it is playing host to
00:29:08the UN climate change conference, cop 31 in Antalia later
00:29:11this year. All right, Andrew, super, thanks so much
