00:06:28Welcome back and thanks for staying with us. A heartbreaking video currently trending on
00:06:32social media has ignited nationwide conversation about empathy,
00:06:36privacy and the boundaries of content creation. The
00:06:40video captures the exact mode.
00:06:42ment a patient passed away a hospital general ward as the reality
00:06:46the loss sank in. The deceased family members broke down in
00:06:50overwhelming grief, wailing uncontrollably, collapsing to the
00:06:54floor and consoling one another in one the most
00:06:57painful moments any family can experience, but just
00:07:01few feet away was another man who was reportedly in the
00:07:05hospital caring for his own sick relative, rather than offering comfort
00:07:09or respecting family's privacy, he took out his phone.
00:07:12recorded their raw moment of grief and shared the video on social
00:07:16media. The footage has since gone viral, dividing public opinion. Many have
00:07:20describe the act as deeply insensitive, arguing that no
00:07:24family's darkest moment should become content without their consent. Others
00:07:28believe the video is powerful reminder the reality of death, saying
00:07:32it encourages people to value life, reconcile with loved ones
00:07:35and appreciate every moment. So where should the line be
00:07:39drawn? As the race for views, and virality
00:07:43diminish the humanity, should there be ethical limits to what
00:07:47we record and post online, even in public
00:07:50spaces, or is documenting real life events
00:07:54simply reflection the world we now living? what are your thoughts on
00:07:57this? out of respect for the grieving family and in view the sensitive
00:08:01nature the incident, we have chosen not to air or
00:08:05amplify the viral video. our discussion today is intended to
00:08:09examine the ethical issues surrounding the recording and sharing. of such
00:08:13deeply personal moments, not to sensionalize the family's loss, so please join
00:08:17the conversation by
00:08:37and i you would feel the pain, this
00:08:40is um it is
00:08:43raw and it is very close to
00:08:47home cuz i remember on saturday was in my friend's house when i heard of
00:08:51coach laraakud i see d mom passing and
00:08:54literally i broke down i have never grived like that
00:08:58because i just discussed with her that were trying to get buy baby stuff to go and
00:09:02visit her in our house so it was very shocking my kids were
00:09:06there everybody was there they were coming to check on me the grandmom heard me crying from
00:09:09upstairs was like and like don't worry, so imagine
00:09:13somebody recording that moment and posting online for what
00:09:17lesson? anyway, that's my opinion, some the opinion that it reminds us that life is
00:09:21short, nima, what was your initial reaction to that
00:09:23video? i've been on this side of this
00:09:27conversation, i think people should i, i know is selfish is a selfish
00:09:31world and content creation is tough, so everything you see
00:09:35is content, i wonder how people pull
00:09:39this through and you know nothing breaks in them.
00:09:43to see someone in their most vulnerable situation and then
00:09:47you hold a video when you are not in any
00:09:50way in need of evidence, so things can happen, maybe you're
00:09:54the ocada driver and somebody is
00:09:57you know having epileptic episode in your cader or
00:10:01your keke or your taxi, it will require some evidence in case things go
00:10:05wrong, i would exempt when you are going to be subject
00:10:09of any investigation, but look at this video and i know lot the... should have seen
00:10:13it, just search it, it will pop up,
00:10:16somebody's family lost their bread
00:10:20winner, most loved one or loved one, whatever the situation is,
00:10:24and you are on this side? you were able to hold a
00:10:26camera through their pain and nothing
00:10:30shifted. well there's reminder of your because you're with your own sick
00:10:33relative who any minute you could just
00:10:37flip it can flip - and nothing shifted. i don't know,
00:10:41but i think is also good for their mental health because
00:10:44the overworring that i go through, i see some people the they just live through
00:10:48life, they don't worry, i
00:10:52dis it's something i envy, disagree
00:10:54with that. i wish, i wish i can get to point where you won't get to you, it won't
00:10:58get to me,
00:11:00you know that i'm learning how to walk away from
00:11:03somebody crying, because i can be there the old
00:11:07day and i will carry the weight of that grief for weeks and nobody in my
00:11:11house knows where i carried it from, i can read the story
00:11:15in the paper, nobody understands how everybody, but me
00:11:19i'm still walking around with the weight of it, i need to unlearn it, so i'm
00:11:23doing that deliberately. and i don't know how these people do these
00:11:27things, it just doesn't, it's not, it's just not me, i have
00:11:31to learn it in my older age, because sometimes days i have not moved
00:11:34on, everybody have moved on, the reason why they do it their own,
00:11:38to be you can go to be selfish enough to put camera is something i
00:11:42can, no, the reason why they do their own is because of bad
00:11:45intention, because you know
00:11:49tell me where is the empathy, because this this topic just lies in the
00:11:53intersection of ethics. our culture
00:11:57as africans, technology, this new technology
00:12:01thing now and the law, because tell me why
00:12:04something drastic or something so emotional heartbreaking happens, you
00:12:08took your time, look at the way he he set the camera, his
00:12:12first instinct, how can your first instinct
00:12:16be to like hold the camera, set it
00:12:20too, then even when you even post it even put arrow so we can see the
00:12:23dead person. it and then like who are
00:12:27you, who gave bird to you, what kind of a person are you? do you understand?
00:12:31that's your first, humanity should always should come before this content, every keep
00:12:35saying it here, what this social media will not cause, it's plenty, so
00:12:39you try to tell me that okay, we understand that some people might argue that is a public space,
00:12:43okay no problem, hospital bed paid for when a sh does that give
00:12:47you the right, the give you consent that i'm grieving lost person and then
00:12:51i wake up and my picture, my family picture and my my the person
00:12:55i'm grieving is in public space how arrow pointing how
00:12:59dare you is the audacity for me so i try to say that if people are in hospital and
00:13:03shared spaces maybe someone is is having a surge maybe their private part or
00:13:07maybe their breast a part their body that for the fact that you're sharing a corner with
00:13:10them that the whole body should come out on social media are you i
00:13:14say how dare you is that's it so in these cases even
00:13:18though is a public space is shared space the
00:13:22law also cover protects people protects your privacy,
00:13:26because different thing if he was recording himself and he captured
00:13:29them by error, but this wasn't that he captured them by
00:13:32error
00:13:37capturing put a
00:13:37it system, edited to put around to point, he made
00:13:41them a story and they did not subscribe to act in his movie, i think is
00:13:45actionable, here we are
00:13:48today,
00:13:49i remember many years ago when social media just
00:13:53started blowing up and we started seeing people going to funerals and
00:13:57taking selfies with the dead body and we were discussing it,
00:14:01well, maybe not, maybe now, here we are, everything you saw
00:14:05today, you will repeat in 10 fols, hundred folds
00:14:09going down the line, so this conversation for me
00:14:12is what will we do as a country, what is the
00:14:16decision we're going to take as a country
00:14:20concerning how we use social media, what we allow on
00:14:24social media? countries like China have since understood that
00:14:27it is very important to regulate it in such a
00:14:31way that humanity,
00:14:34privacy is protected, but
00:14:38we are still going on and using social media
00:14:41anyhow and anyway, even Europe and
00:14:44America where this all started, every time
00:14:48on social media, I'm seeing videos upon videos of influential
00:14:52people having conversations with their government. sitting down at round
00:14:56tables with government talking about regulating
00:14:59this this thing that we call social
00:15:03media, we're not saying that it does not have its good sides when we have used it
00:15:06in many ways to better our lives and do better for each other and our
00:15:10countries, but there is a bad a flip side and that
00:15:14flip side if we do not
00:15:17quickly do something the sort of videos will be
00:15:21seeing especially since content has been monetized the sort of content.
00:15:25we be seeing will be so shocked, will be so embarrassed, shocked and it
00:15:28will cause um widespread
00:15:32anger and grief and and and and commotion, so what are
00:15:36we going to do? It's easy to just talk about, oh, how can he do it, how
00:15:40did he do it? He did it because he can do it a country that allows him to do
00:15:44it, as a country, as a government, what is the next
00:15:47step? Let's not just look at these videos as just one story
00:15:51in one area, far away, or just bad behavior, let
00:15:55us take a stand as a country, what do we want, how do
00:15:59we want to be represented on social media if other countries can do
00:16:02it, we can do it, when we went to China, I remember I met a couple
00:16:06of um... Chinese girls and we were talking wanted to
00:16:10change social uh exchange numbers and social media whatever and they were like
00:16:13oh um we're not on whatever you need to find us on this this
00:16:17this and I just and they were so comfortable this are they are
00:16:20educated yes exactly that's why I'm going they didn't have
00:16:24any there's nothing missing in them they were well spoken they spoke their
00:16:28Chinese and spoke English with me they wanted to know they're curious about me I asked them
00:16:31question so there's nothing that they lost
00:16:34everything they had so there's nothing that missing
00:16:38out because you are allowed to just use social media
00:16:42however and
00:16:43you know so we need to just for me conversations like this is not just
00:16:47about today oh my god how wicked he is we hear you what is the next
00:16:51step to take let's take
00:17:16and thanks for staying with us. Is there any positives to this? Is there any silver
00:17:20lining in terms the fact that maybe this is to remind us
00:17:23of those that were saying is to remind us that life is
00:17:26fical and that people can pass in one second? Is there
00:17:30any? Is there does anybody see that
00:17:32the consumer? Not at all. Okay, so we all agree that there's
00:17:36no. in their family
00:17:38is death now, it's not not a
00:17:40exclusive,
00:17:44exactly, exclusive
00:17:45it's to a certain sort of people, there's no
00:17:49excuse, so this idea of content
00:17:51creation and we just tend to
00:17:55just because of monetization, how
00:17:59do we ensure that we don't lose all form of
00:18:02decorum, um, empathy and boundaries
00:18:06because we want to generate. create content
00:18:10um, i have to call myself out because since they
00:18:13monetized we have be very serious on facebook and i realized that when
00:18:17i posted me and my son the first time i got a few dollars so the
00:18:21second time we came to work took a selfie and posted again and when i
00:18:25took picture with my yesterday was like are you going to post it on facebook maybe
00:18:28later but i knew my mother was going i knew was going to make me money and i just call to
00:18:32me i have the question that when you get monetized - the change is not
00:18:36sudden. 'you just realize you see what
00:18:40is bringing money is shamelessness,
00:18:44you did not do the shamelessness consciously the first time, but he got you money and
00:18:48they will give you data to show this is what brought you the most money last month,
00:18:52oh this content did i just did in my, i was
00:18:55not even arranged, he brought me money, then you do another one then it
00:18:58becomes learned thing, i was seeing more of it
00:19:02online, so when we see candid moments, people that capture candid
00:19:06moments they get viral'. and they make money, so we will end up
00:19:10having more candid, is
00:19:11there a way we can have regulation to stop this, or is it just
00:19:15case of we would educate ourselves by going to
00:19:18court, maybe if they su this guy and he has to pay money, what how
00:19:22can we curb this or or this conversation is enough, what
00:19:26can we do? conversation is not enough, we need to do
00:19:30serious sensitization, i don't know what we are teaching in our
00:19:34schools, but
00:19:34i don't think any of our schools, particularly from primary school.
00:19:37is teaching empathy, they
00:19:39are no longer teaching empathy, people no longer celebrate
00:19:43empathy, we call them smart, we call them the most outspoken
00:19:47one, we don't have focus on the weak ones, and so we grow up and
00:19:51we continue things like this, it should be thought that you know this is their time
00:19:55of grief, this is how you should comport yourself and parents too should teach their
00:19:59kids, you know how it is done, how it should be done, i
00:20:03don't know whether
00:20:26content creation thing, especially
00:20:29now with DJ and all of that. I feel
00:20:33like um, we're adding lot of carelessness to
00:20:37it and... is conscious carelessness, let
00:20:41me use an example, now let's say that that the
00:20:44family, the grieving family had military
00:20:48uniform,
00:20:51you now they saw that there were military men around there, i bet
00:20:55you that guy or whoever did made that video would not
00:20:59have tried that thing would with the opportunity given
00:21:03the opportunity that person would not, because he is fully aware or
00:21:07she is fully aware, whoever held the camera is fully aware
00:21:11that guy, if this video
00:21:13comes out, this military people will do me way no good, do you
00:21:17understand? then look at our... content creators
00:21:21when they go abroad, when they are here, they
00:21:25make careless videos, i don't care whoever appears, whatever
00:21:29appears in the video, they don't care, when they move abroad,
00:21:33you see the kind of videos that they make, they only make videos when
00:21:37they are with when they are indoors in the confined
00:21:40space, yeah, because they are fully aware that there are
00:21:43consequences, do you understand what i mean,
00:21:47yes, so these people, in as much as you know what, trying to say,
00:21:50okay, yeah, social media is this, social media is that, we should confine, but
00:21:54we our people are aware, they are fully
00:21:58aware, the make full conscious
00:22:01decisions,
00:22:07so you said
00:22:08you know something about how monetizing content sort
00:22:12of slowly changes you, um, the change
00:22:16happened even long before the monetization, that's how it slowly changes. you
00:22:20because then it was even for validation for the likes and the
00:22:23comments you know and we're human beings
00:22:27you find yourself just um unintentionally morfing
00:22:31into what you believe people would yeah
00:22:34accept and also validate you in form of likes
00:22:38and um comments and now money of course as we know with money
00:22:41amplifies everything so to that this one now
00:22:45is a personal level there's some people that their business their work
00:22:50I said in the beginning, social media has its good sides of course, but you
00:22:54have to be very careful, you have to
00:22:58be conscious and intentional of what your message
00:23:01is, who am I, first of all, what is the message
00:23:05I want to send, and how does this represent
00:23:09myself, my brand, my message? If any point you think that
00:23:13you are pushed to post a content or video, whatever it
00:23:16is, or even a speech that does not reflect. who you
00:23:20are, what you are, no matter how trending or how much you will make your
00:23:24how much, please take a step backwards, change,
00:23:28don't don't post it, so personally that is how we should deal with
00:23:32it, but secondly we're talking about
00:23:34raising, lot of us can have that self awareness bause we're
00:23:38coming from a time before now, so we have it, but then we're also
00:23:42now have a generation that were raised on social media, so
00:23:46they don't even have any what they know that makes it,
00:23:49what is important to them is how they are received on social media, so they will go as
00:23:53far as they want, so they may not necessarily have this thing that we
00:23:57have, this filter, that's where parenting comes in, that's where mentoring comes in, and
00:24:01that is where government policy must come in as well, buse
00:24:05not everybody has the privilege of having
00:24:08parents or schools or community that sees
00:24:12this as a bad thing, we watched or there was
00:24:16a video that went viral of mother giving her b
00:24:20maybe um sexual activity and
00:24:24she was streaming it in this country woman was
00:24:28was sexually abusing her child and she put
00:24:31it online and people watched and she got money
00:24:35so honestly concerning this boy that has or this person that has put
00:24:39this video i know that it is bad but it's just one the
00:24:43many horrible things happening on social media
00:24:46now and i'm saying to our government don't put hands like this
00:24:50and be looking, it's a serious situation, it may not
00:24:54seem like much, but it is lot, right now you
00:24:58may think it's just one person behaving badly, but it can get
00:25:01worse, you don't want one day, we have videos of maybe people
00:25:05abroad,
00:25:06you i know someone was let, okay you have call, okay let me just
00:25:10quickly you know i've seen people who have put videos of one she put up a
00:25:14video of her going into like a bank and vault and things like that
00:25:18buse she was not thinking it was bringing her views and she lost her
00:25:22job and access to that place and we're going to find people like that, somebody
00:25:25goes to works in central bank and decides to open up things or works
00:25:29with the presidency and decides to open up things that should not be opened
00:26:17so um,
00:26:18you know, this brings me back to what i always see, you
00:26:21know, the root, um, that's
00:26:24parenting, value system,
00:26:28because we can create content without sacrificing
00:26:32and..." dignity, we can create content
00:26:35without sacrificing our family's
00:26:38dignity, you see back in the
00:26:41day and when you go to someone's house and then parents used
00:26:45to do this thing, they say who are you, what is your name,
00:26:48what is your father's name, who is your father, who is your mother, we
00:26:51used to think that it was a prideful thing, it wasn't, because that parent needs to
00:26:55know who are you and where are you coming from, who raised
00:26:58you, what is your value system, is it acceptable in our home?
00:27:02do we share the same value system those that no later
00:27:06they say changing to look like a thing of maybe pride and segregation
00:27:09and the power strug like as no that was not the main reason of that
00:27:13question parents used to ask in those days we need to
00:27:17do so that you need to know whether my child and your child whether the way i see your parents and the way they brought
00:27:21you up whether he's in single whether you you can be friends with my child whether you can
00:27:25marry my child those are the reasons and that
00:27:28brings me to this particular issue of monetization
00:27:35you you're monetizing money you like it, but I bet you that there are certain things you won't put out
00:27:39there because of money, of course not,
00:27:42419 brings money, human
00:27:46sacrifice and the this thing brings money and selling of human
00:27:50organs, but you don't do those things because the way we are
00:27:54brought up, because of your value system, you
00:27:56when the hear where they said you say to means
00:28:00that god forbid that no. and then you
00:28:04find out that when you come from a community, when you're raised
00:28:07well, when you have family unit, and family units
00:28:11also has extended family units, there are certain things you cannot do, the certain
00:28:15things you cannot put on this social media, let tell you, you think of your
00:28:19mother, you think of your father, you think of your so
00:28:22maybe your phone will start, there's something you post, your phone will start ringing, all
00:28:26your family members, take it down, take it
00:28:29down, do you understand, but you find that most these
00:28:33people they don't have community, they don't have family, they don't have where they are coming from, they don't
00:28:36have
00:28:37the who they are scared of, they don't they are listening to, they don't, they don't have who's
00:28:41going to point it out to them because it's just money, so what they don't have any
00:28:45value system, government
00:28:48government, you understand, because even if government let us start
00:28:52from the core, from ourselves as what do you think is
00:28:56right and wrong, so
00:29:00if so that when government wants to regulate, then
00:29:03you can work faster, but if you don't difference between right and
00:29:07wrong, we still f. i don't think
00:29:11anybody knows
00:29:12the difference, don't know the difference between right and wrong, i think people just
00:29:15believe they can get away with it in societies where they can get away
00:29:19with, if they don't know it in Nigeria, how come these people that they can do things here when they
00:29:23relocate to another country because the environment
00:29:27policy,
00:29:31people don't. is worshipping the law so you do a video influencer
00:29:35does a video so the moment get a
00:29:38smartphone i will be rolling like that anyway i am if i'm
00:29:42in the toilet i'll just hold the camera and be rolling i want that video and i will
00:29:46be talking anything inside without processing what i'm saying and
00:29:50that's for me is what everybody has been doing with their video because that's what i've
00:29:53seen people do with their video which is just imitating
00:29:57is common and is common now is anyhow he must be
00:30:16to once again, thank you for the topic, it's um, it's
00:30:19always nice and refreshing when topical issues
00:30:23that is happening in society is been brought
00:30:27up, now on this matter, i know that the family, yes they
00:30:30might
00:30:31be grieving, know that it's possible that the family will or
00:30:35can sue that person, it can even sue the hospital because
00:30:39actually you are supposed to have what you call healthcare centers and
00:30:43other public places are supposed to have what you call uh public
00:30:46liability you insurance that person can sue them even can
00:30:50sue the person who took the pictures but like all the ladies have said guess
00:30:54it goes beyond that particular incident is actually like
00:30:57um one the consequences the society.
