00:00:44in some parts of Africa, a large number of people living with
00:00:48albinism face extreme
00:00:50violence.
00:00:53in Three more suspects
00:00:53of have been arrested for the killing of children, one with albinism. South
00:00:57Africa has had its fair share
00:00:59of these attack. Among the culprits is the man's uncle who,
00:01:03together with two other
00:01:04individuals.
00:01:14a 2014 report by under the same son, a
00:01:17Canadian charity helighted
00:01:20129 killings and
00:01:23181 other attacks across 23
00:01:27African nations, here in Nigeria, the
00:01:31reality may not be as
00:01:33of deadly, but for many acceptance remains a
00:01:36daily battle. People living with albinism continue
00:01:41of to face judgment and discrimination, primarily because
00:01:44of their skin
00:01:46of condition. Albinism is a genetic
00:01:49condition that reduces the amount of pigments in the
00:01:53skin,
00:01:54of hair and eyes. Beyond the stigma that comes with
00:01:58their hypopigmentation. are the silent struggles
00:02:02and the daily fight against
00:02:04of wobbly eyes and
00:02:06of skin
00:02:06patches.
00:02:10In the we hours
00:02:12of the morning, my team and I
00:02:14a began our journey to ijede, a community in
00:02:17Ikorodu area of Lagos
00:02:19of State. The Oladun Joyee family had
00:02:23granted our request to speak about their struggle raising
00:02:27three girls with Albinism.
00:02:30arrival, Mrs. welcomed me to
00:02:34their home. the girls
00:02:38excitement fills the room, unaware that their story
00:02:41reflects the experience of many families raising
00:02:45children without binnism. you see people, they will
00:02:49start
00:02:49calling,
00:02:54sometimes i'm always scared that hope they will not be
00:02:57a allergic to this, hope they won't be allergic to this. so I'm always
00:03:00careful giving them something, especially the food, some people
00:03:04cross you on the road, like have this mind to stop you and ask
00:03:08question, are you sure you are the one that gave bird to this, I
00:03:11of say what's the meaning, are you, do you see anybody want to
00:03:15claim
00:03:16of them, daniela, messy, metabel, and we
00:03:19are the three
00:03:21ways, they have
00:03:24unique
00:03:25of traits, daniela is the oldest
00:03:29daughter. She is just eight years old, she's
00:03:33bright, expressive and incredibly
00:03:36creat, teach you how to make, she
00:03:39loves painting and her talent is beautifully
00:03:43displayed as she walks me through the process of making a
00:03:47gift
00:03:48of card. Our sister, God's mercy is six years
00:03:52old, she's quiet
00:03:54of but empathetic, she looks up to her older
00:03:57sister, even learns how to paint. from her.
00:04:01a Matabelle is the playful one, she's just two
00:04:04years old and does not understand the harsh
00:04:08realities that people like our
00:04:10face. For the three white girls,
00:04:14albeanism is not a limitation, but source of strength on their
00:04:18journey on reaching their full potential. Through confidence and
00:04:22determination, they have proven that the society cannot
00:04:25silence their gods given abilities.
00:04:29Watch. when the girls speak highly
00:04:31of themselves, it is not difficult to notice how
00:04:35confident they are, so I ask their parents how they
00:04:39of managed to build such strong self-esteem in their
00:04:42daughters, their answer, intentional parenting,
00:04:46check anything, check it, certificates,
00:04:50best in the class, everything they are doing, they are the
00:04:54best, raising them, I allow them to
00:04:58know that there are some things. you will face in life,
00:05:02you must be ready to face it, don't allow
00:05:05anybody to push you aside, your color or anything does not
00:05:09matter, what matter is your brain, who is your best? best friend i
00:05:13tell you Jesus is your best friend, your mommy is your best friend and your sisters are your
00:05:17best friend, so if someone said they are not playing with you, i
00:05:21don't want you to be disturbed, despite daniela's confidence
00:05:25and a dream of becoming an explorer, she says
00:05:29that being a person with albinism comes with lot of
00:05:32discomforts, us to play any used to run
00:05:36and sweat and play in the sun, they even play football
00:05:40outside and so people might injure. and i cannot do them and i don't
00:05:44like stress and i used to sweat
00:05:48so much like finished, i've just
00:05:52came out the bathroom. she also shared that making new
00:05:55friends can be difficult as other children
00:05:59often run away from - they don't want to play with me
00:06:03and sometimes i asked them be my friend they
00:06:06said no, sometimes i asked them again, are you my friend? they say yes
00:06:10and i'm confused. Beyond emotional
00:06:13support, raising children with albinism also
00:06:17comes with another challenge, financial responsibility,
00:06:21for both parents, having another child with
00:06:24albinism is not an option. I don't want another
00:06:28child, you already know what is uh, what you are
00:06:31spending, you already know the challenges, then you want to have another one,
00:06:35you want not to have another challenge to what you
00:06:39are, what you already facing, if you check their skin, see
00:06:42that their skin very smooth like their mother would say
00:06:46extra care, that one is money, buy this, buy
00:06:50this, buy this money, then the are you want to them to be the
00:06:54best in the class again, is another thing, thank
00:06:57you, for deeper insights into the condition,
00:07:01i visited the lagos state university teaching hospital the
00:07:05next day where i met dr cole, a
00:07:08dermatologist and advocate for people living with albinis
00:07:13She explains what albinism is and allies the
00:07:17sun as one the greatest threats to those living with the
00:07:21condition, it's inherited from both
00:07:24parents, but it's what we call recessive gene,
00:07:28meaning that
00:07:29you know both parents may be carriers, but they can have a
00:07:33child that has albinism, and this gene
00:07:37that is a bit different is the gene that controls the
00:07:40production of melany. melanin is the
00:07:44pigment that gives our skin its color, and so when
00:07:48that gene is not working the way it's meant to, it's
00:07:52unable to code to produce adequate melanin. there's
00:07:55a spectrum of albinism disorders,
00:07:59it's called oculocutinous albinism scientifically
00:08:03because it affects the eyes and the skin, of course as well as the
00:08:07hair, cancer comes as result of
00:08:11long-term sun exposure. without some protection, what
00:08:14usually starts first is sunburns, so you see that people within tend to
00:08:18get very redish when they are under the sun and they can become
00:08:22red and they can have blisters on the skin called
00:08:25sunburn, and then after some time they may develop
00:08:28freckles, freckles are the dark spots, but we call
00:08:32lentigens, then with continuous exposure without
00:08:36protection, they can develop scaly dry patches on the
00:08:39skin, and this is the precursor to skin
00:08:42cancer, despite these
00:08:46challenges, there is hope, with proper care and early
00:08:49intervention, skin damage can be prevented or
00:08:53managed. cryotherapy is one way in which we destroy the
00:08:57damaged skin, so it's a control destruction the skin
00:09:01that uses cryotherapy, which is frozen liquid
00:09:05nitrogen gas and the gas is sprayed
00:09:08onto the skin lesions and it freezes them.
00:09:12causing them to die as result of freezing. It's as painful as
00:09:16if you put your hand in, if you use your hand to hold ice block,
00:09:20you know how it feels. It's cold, and if you hold it
00:09:23for few seconds, you feel the burn. It's not
00:09:27a burn, but it's a freeze burn. Dr. Cole also
00:09:31addresses the many misconceptions surrounding
00:09:34albinism while emphasizing how individuals
00:09:37can effectively manage their condition and leave
00:09:41healthy lives. we hear things like
00:09:45oh a person maybe they had you
00:09:48know they meant the wife and husband met in the
00:09:52afternoon that's why they gave birth to a person it's
00:09:55false is should not eat salt it's not true what damages their
00:09:59skin is sun not salt most of those
00:10:03meits that some people say they don't die they are normal human beings they
00:10:07just don't have you know enough skin color people with
00:10:11albinism have normal to above
00:10:14average intelligence, so they are intelligent,
00:10:18they are capable of reproduction, they are capable of living
00:10:22healthy lives once the skin is protected.
00:10:29She further condemns the portrayal of people with albinism in
00:10:33condescending kids, stressing the need for stricter
00:10:36laws and greater societal awareness,
00:10:40people are ignorant about
00:10:44how offensive it is to make people with
00:10:47disability the bott of jokes in social
00:10:50media, and I think that lot of people do
00:10:53it out of... not intentionally, but because of
00:10:57ignorance, but as they say, ignorance is not an
00:11:00excuse. the discrimination against
00:11:04persons with disabilities prohibition act
00:11:072018 criminalizes discrimination
00:11:11against persons with disabilities, and offenders may face
00:11:14fines, imprisonment or both depending on the nature
00:11:18the
00:11:19offense.
00:11:24in vibrant and densely populated
00:11:27community in Lagos State, lies another story of
00:11:31woman living with albinism.
00:11:35Here, Mrs. Blessing Adegbe, a school
00:11:38owner allowed TVC news to spotlight woman,
00:11:42she describes a blessing to her pupils for nearly
00:11:46nine years. Hello everyone, how are you
00:11:50doing? How are you doing? my this
00:11:53is M Lara, it's nice to meet you,
00:11:57nice to see you,
00:11:59yellow, at
00:12:0137, as built
00:12:05alive around one thing, teaching,
00:12:09she says a passion for the classroom was born from a deep
00:12:13love for children, no, once they say me for the first
00:12:17time, they will, they will run out the class, they'll be so
00:12:21scared as i used to associate myself with them,
00:12:25they start to amend, whenever i'm in the
00:12:28midst the children, i feel joy,
00:12:32behind the bright smile and energetic
00:12:35personality, lies story marked by
00:12:38pain, she speaks about the struggless of living with
00:12:41albinism, the weight of societal
00:12:44judgment and the heartbreak of failed
00:12:48relationships go to that clas, all of it just
00:12:52called me that we are no more toget. i don't
00:12:56think we can move on, i don't
00:12:58think, but i feel pin,
00:13:02i feel down, i cry and
00:13:06cry, they are trying to take an advantage, so we
00:13:10say come to my house, i want to see you
00:13:14this and that, blah blah blah blah blah, and i will tell you no, for
00:13:17mrs blessing, giving omolara a
00:13:21chance almost did not happen, so immediately i saw
00:13:25i was like sorry there's no space again somebody else is
00:13:27here
00:13:33of so her the dad was like i know why you say there's no bacon color
00:13:34because i say yes that
00:13:37i don't think i will be able to work with her one the children will be
00:13:41scared parents will complain and the dad was
00:13:45like okay don't pay her just let her walk with you
00:13:49for a month and see if i can cook if i can't cook
00:13:53let her come back home began as a one-month
00:13:56trial has now grown into nine years of
00:14:00unwaving dedication, commitment and impact in the
00:14:04lives of many students. i went to the
00:14:07streets to find out if truly people without
00:14:11albinism are comfortable marrying those with the
00:14:14condition. in this one life that have come, i can't take
00:14:18that chance to, i can't marry, you said
00:14:22marry right? no, i can't, it's habil. but I'm not sure of getting
00:14:26married to someone like that, if God says yes, why I say
00:14:29no, in lagos state, however, people with
00:14:33albinism have a large community where they unborden their
00:14:37challenges and make meaningful relationships under the
00:14:41Albinism Association of Nigeria. The
00:14:45meetings are held twice every month with about
00:14:48150 members in attendance. At every
00:14:52meeting, new members are warmly. welcomed and
00:14:56informed about the opportunities available to
00:14:59them. Mr. Tolani
00:15:02ojuri, the lager state chairman the Albinism
00:15:05Association of Nigeria says the level of
00:15:09awareness is still very low. The challenges we
00:15:12still have is um for children, we still have the issue of
00:15:16bullying, we still have the myth going on um
00:15:20um with people and
00:15:24um you see. have a person, mean look at person with
00:15:27albinism as someone who is different, who are not capable,
00:15:31who are not up to the task, or if i employ this person with albinism
00:15:35can he or she deliver and and the way we are trying to
00:15:39um address that is for our members, we are giving
00:15:43them all we can to equip them, for our children we make sure
00:15:47that you know what, you won't drop out of school, whatever you need
00:15:51to stay in school, whatever you need to go through the school system, he
00:15:55adds that societal stigma is on the rise
00:15:59and they are seeking more government support, for
00:16:02Elizabeth, an educationist living with albinism,
00:16:06one child would remember still stands out,
00:16:10different names that I can't even, I wouldn't want to say teachers would
00:16:14call me those names rather than call me Elizabeth, and then there was this man,
00:16:18Mr. Solomon who was my class teacher at the time, I think then I was in,
00:16:22I was about 10, 10 year old, yeah, and Mr. Sulaimon
00:16:25would come into the classroom, engage with other students and
00:16:29never involved me anything that they did in class, whether or not I
00:16:33knew the answers to questions, Mr. Solomon would never call on me.
00:16:37to respond, but not every experience of fault in the
00:16:41classroom, for some the struggle continues in
00:16:45relationships and personal safety,
00:16:48ekena is one of such
00:16:50persons, i have this
00:16:53coun with some
00:16:57individuals that ignorant about
00:17:00us, they saw me, i came to a place and
00:17:04they like ,
00:17:08saying some funny words saying that this
00:17:11person will go for money, they were saying the local toilet, you
00:17:15could relate, this person could be used for
00:17:19money, to make enough money, this that can be used for
00:17:23spiritual fortification and all the
00:17:26rest, so uh, because
00:17:29i some people that you don't was your time trying
00:17:33to explain things to them because they already so deep ignorant.
00:17:37so i just - just smile and walk away, but the communal
00:17:41love the share superceeds these challenges.
00:17:45people with albinism have normal functioning immune systems.
00:17:49what's the challenge is is sun exposure,
00:17:53so you must avoid the sun during the peak hours the
00:17:57day, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
00:18:00daily. people with albinism should look for jobs in
00:18:04which they are indoors more than their outdoors. their job should not
00:18:08take them like a street hawker or
00:18:12field worker, it's those jobs are not
00:18:15appropriate for people withounism because it's just going to
00:18:19end up leading to them developing skin cancer from very early
00:18:22age, so indoor work, in schools they
00:18:26should teachers and parents should encourage children with
00:18:30albinism to have different uniforms, their uniform must be long
00:18:34sleeve, even if the uniform is short for the school, their own uniform
00:18:37should be trousers and long sleeved shirts to cover their skin
00:18:41from direct sun exposure and in most um schools we
00:18:45encourage children with albinism to have heart as part their school
00:18:49uniform wide brim heart so that they are
00:18:53protected from the sun. regular use of sunscreen
00:18:57is also important so sunscreen will protect children with alvinism and
00:19:01people with albsm from uv rais from the sun, but sunscreen
00:19:04alone is not sufficient so that's where the cloth. comes
00:19:07in the wide bream heart, umbrellas,
00:19:10sunglasses, that's what they need to focus on. in the course
00:19:14of this reports have been asked several questions, like whether
00:19:18I afraid that associating with people with
00:19:21albinism might mean that I would also have
00:19:24children with arbinism. that alone goes a
00:19:28long way to show the lack of awareness that still
00:19:32exists in the society for many people living with
00:19:36albinism. changing their skin color is not an
00:19:40option, they would rather prefer society that changes its
00:19:44perspective through acceptance, understanding
00:19:48and inclusion. zeinab
