00:00:22On this week's hot list, financial fright, the currency is weaker
00:00:26than ever, investors are running from the stock market. What is impact on the
00:00:30ground, three
00:00:32of meal mess, the boss
00:00:36of of the president's flagship school lunch program is fired, then arrested, how to save a good idea,
00:00:39and travel dreams, why Indonesians are among the world's
00:00:43least likely to
00:00:44of travel
00:00:45abroad?
00:01:25topic number one: financial fright. Confidence in
00:01:28Indonesia's currency is. down way down
00:01:31the rupea fell to its weakest level ever at more than
00:01:3418,00 to the dollar, stocks hit the year's lowest point
00:01:37this month as the world's worst performing market down
00:01:41nearly 40% in 5
00:01:43of months. the global reason
00:01:45of
00:01:45of why is the war in Iran of course with shipping lanes closed and
00:01:49resources shifted, but you know guys, let's talk about the domestic
00:01:52issues, close to home and the impact on everyday life. first,
00:01:56you no, analysts say that this isn't a catastrophic. crash like
00:02:00in 98 because now systems are
00:02:02of stronger and reserves remain in place, but trust, trust
00:02:06is damaged, trust in leaders, trust in recent government actions to
00:02:10you first, for you, what's hurt confidence the
00:02:14most? well, it's very interesting right, because our
00:02:18inflation is actually under control, all these indicators right,
00:02:21inflation, and then uh the growth is actually quite good as well,
00:02:255.6%
00:02:27in compares to other countries uh, but the... real problem i
00:02:31think is
00:02:31of the uncertainty when it comes to policy policy, so
00:02:35of markets can tolerate bad news, but what they cannot tolerate is
00:02:39uncertainty, and that goes back to leadership and
00:02:41of government, yes exactly, and so i think what they're questioning is
00:02:45this
00:02:47um the fiscal fiscal integrity of Indonesia, so they seeing you
00:02:51know governments keeps changing the policies, governments keep coming up with all these
00:02:55new projects and all these
00:02:57you know great big. programs that will
00:03:00need lots of
00:03:01of money to talk about that in
00:03:02the next segment, i know what you're referring to, yenny, but not only
00:03:06that, that
00:03:07i'm being funny, well
00:03:08you know the the impact as as we want to discuss in this segment has already
00:03:12begun, some capital projects are being put on the shelf, some postponed
00:03:16families, heard are quietly moving their money overseas,
00:03:19prices on imported goods are beginning to creep up, william, what are
00:03:23you seeing and does it really
00:03:25of affect the average Indonesia who's maybe driving taxi or selling food on the
00:03:29street? No, in general, I talked to lot
00:03:32of food and beverage operator,
00:03:36the the revenue is going down, could
00:03:40be people more reserve on the
00:03:43funding, it don't just spend, they don't
00:03:46of go out and eat anymore that much, they eat, but they don't p spend lot of money
00:03:50for the food, because the dollars increase, lot of
00:03:54imported ingredients increase
00:03:57tremendously, yeah, but just came back from
00:04:01uh travel from from central jawa to
00:04:05to uh west kalimantan and west
00:04:09sum west sumatra which is padang
00:04:12i went always went to the see the market the
00:04:16market
00:04:17of still
00:04:17in a glance still busy except when they took a few
00:04:21people they said the revenue is is uh
00:04:25going down that's a fact of reality
00:04:29but Indonesia is
00:04:31i think is survival and base you don't
00:04:35eat all the
00:04:38of luxury ingredients and as as you know the
00:04:41basically
00:04:42of Indonesia in the old time is they grew up with the plant
00:04:45of base lot of very local
00:04:49ingredients except tempe may be because
00:04:5195% of uh
00:04:55imported so maybe the you said you saw the markets wet markets dry markets the
00:04:59they they are still busy, but people are not buying as much or as consuming as
00:05:03much, but if I look at the the stock of ingredients still
00:05:07abundant, you business contracts a larger scale and
00:05:10business contracts paid in dollars. are being put on hold because obviously
00:05:14they cost more, you need more rupea, but but if you're coming to Indonesia,
00:05:18yeah, um, your dollar or your euro are worth lot
00:05:22more than few months ago, that's a small bright spot,
00:05:26well it is when it comes, when you look at it from the tourism perspective,
00:05:30right, uh, of course, chip for Indonesia is great for
00:05:33for tourists, but then what is the impact for ordinary
00:05:37Indonesians, they will have to pay
00:05:39you know higher prices for everything, you know, like imported fuel,
00:05:43medicines, food ingredients as well as you know like
00:05:46industry inputs and everything is affected by the rising dollars and
00:05:50so you Indonesians will have to pay
00:05:54much much higher prices and and
00:05:58it is not a small thing, this is people feel it, people feel the the
00:06:02squeeze, the economic squeeze and they're not happy about it. okay, now analysts say the next few
00:06:06weeks will be kind of crucial to the financial situation,
00:06:09financial anxiety, whether
00:06:12the government will take solid action in restoring investor confidence,
00:06:15william, you've been through the ups and downs um through the
00:06:19years, I'm not saying that you're like so old or anything, but how would
00:06:23you rate this economic situation we are in now as
00:06:27compared to maybe you know crisis in the past? it's very hard to
00:06:30predict, I mean is it, I'm not the
00:06:34economist, no I'm not, but that's the feeling like 98 that was
00:06:37bad, everybody felt it and we knew it, the region felt it,
00:06:41it's not that bad.
00:06:43I don't think we on that when
00:06:46look level there I I agree still
00:06:46because some maybe
00:06:50some little positive optimism
00:06:54among the Indonesian except too much
00:06:58the political political issue at the moment your question
00:07:02earlier but whether this is as bad as 98 I don't think so
00:07:06because our institutions much stronger now and our banking sectors
00:07:09especially so much stronger now uh like
00:07:13you said before, reserve is is much stronger as well, much higher,
00:07:17my advise is that government needs to be needs to stabilize
00:07:20the um the fiscal spending, they need
00:07:24to rain in all the spendings, because if if you don't have the
00:07:28money you need to borrow, either you need to borrow or you need to rein in your spending,
00:07:32that's but if you ask the ministers they're complaining that their budgets have been
00:07:35cut, yeah but that's the other thing right, because if i were him
00:07:39i would him being the president, him being the president
00:07:43"I would look at all the programs and see which ones
00:07:46need more investment in terms of government's procurements, government's investments
00:07:50right, what industry needs help, needs incentive and
00:07:54put more money into that. Okay, so reorganiz the budget and
00:07:58see where we are at this point in time, which we we want to discuss next, because
00:08:02hot Indo will continue shortly with the free meal
00:08:06mess, how to save the school lunch
00:08:09program.
00:10:38Kentanala sendiri merupakan sebuah brand fashion aksesoris yang kita menggunakan

00:11:0180%.
00:12:21topic number two, free meal mess. the images.
00:12:25were shocking to some, not surprising to others, the head the country's free
00:12:29school lunch program was arrested June 3rd for corruption, the day
00:12:32after he was fired from the president's priority program. this
00:12:36capped more than year of problems for the well-intentioned effort, among
00:12:40them thousands of sick kids from hygien issues. new program
00:12:44leaders pledge to do better. you know, um, we've talked about this
00:12:48several times, if you watched and and let me go to you first, as
00:12:52food guy, um, is this noble
00:12:56project as i believe that just needed a lot better
00:12:59execution? the intention is
00:13:01noble, but the my major concern
00:13:05is about how to handle the food safety,
00:13:09while the rest is easy as as long as you have
00:13:12rice, you have protein, you have some fruit,
00:13:16veggie, it should be, we don't have to generally count in
00:13:19detail on the on the nutrient, but you have those
00:13:23factors is ' sihat, lima
00:13:28apa empat sempura, that's milk, that should be fine, but my major consenty is
00:13:31the especially to clean the food
00:13:34container, and that's been the problem with the hygiene
00:13:37and the way you
00:13:41cook them as well, the way you cook and the way you
00:13:44store, right? for instance, just an
00:13:48example, the
00:13:49airline, you never
00:13:53cook and send to the... it has to be blast
00:13:56chill for 24 to 48 hours really
00:14:00and portion then send to the plane that is to stop
00:14:04the bacteria, but if you cook and you hold it
00:14:07within one hour they definitely
00:14:10be contaminated
00:14:13he has experience buse you you handled food program few years
00:14:17ago can you imagine garuda is one person sick in during the
00:14:21fly oh be horrible yeah you have to land bad publicity
00:14:26Yeah, that is from the food side, and and that's why I want to ask you that specifically,
00:14:30now um, operationally, it was to me, it was rolled out too
00:14:33fast, serving too many people, I mean tens of millions of kids needed
00:14:37more planning, but the president we know wanted to make good on his campaign
00:14:41promise, um, yenny leaders have been replaced, what else now
00:14:45to get it going right, like William said, I mean this is novel, he's got a
00:14:49novel intention, but again we need to look at our own capacity, you
00:14:53know, we this is... such a massive program and
00:14:57you want to roll it out immediately nationwide program
00:15:01without a the capacity to back it up
00:15:05and
00:15:05you know this is the main problem and I am actually I'm very
00:15:09glad that the new head the uh MBG you know the the
00:15:13the
00:15:14the the freelaunch program actually said that she's going to scale
00:15:17down the operations and and uh the program and
00:15:21she's going to focus more on the the poorest areas of Indonesia.
00:15:25Yeah, yeah, the place where you need more nutrition, exactly, buse why, why do you want
00:15:28to uh feed all the rich kids in in the big cities for
00:15:32example, what what happened, what has been happening
00:15:35is that these kids the... got all these food allowances from their from their
00:15:39rich parents, they buy their own food or they bring food from home,
00:15:43so what they what they do is they take the free lunch
00:15:47and give them to their drivers, to their nanies etc. yeah, that's
00:15:51happening, so in
00:15:55instead of spending all this money
00:15:59on food that will be wasted, we should uh put it
00:16:02industry that needs incentive, like i said before, industry that needs
00:16:06incentive that would... create jobs for the parents the
00:16:10poor kids and then the corruption arose because the huge
00:16:13scale that they awarded contracts to people setting up kitchens who probably had
00:16:17no experience and but just because they knew someone and i'm
00:16:21not tarring everybody with the same brush but it happened there were documented
00:16:25cases so we need transparency when it comes to the procurements contracts
00:16:29given out to whom what are they uh what is what what is the output
00:16:32and and they did reveal some it's it's a very difficult to
00:16:36control with the the level of
00:16:39competency of it's a caterer, yeah, they are
00:16:43not all experienced, there's no standard, national government standard
00:16:47for food service on this, you can't do it in instantly, yeah, and and
00:16:51the the scale of it was too many people, and so they already before
00:16:54this arrest of this the former leader, they they had cut
00:16:58out the weekends and certain parts the program to scale it down, so the
00:17:02new leaders are saying we're only going to do less instead of 20 million
00:17:06we're going to do
00:17:07tray, the may be five million at first or okay, one last point on the
00:17:11food, william, is is the is the issue of hygiene and i want
00:17:14to get this important because parents are really concerned about this, is it a
00:17:18solvable problem or impossible because the
00:17:21enormity the lunch is served, because the
00:17:25numbers, you know, each
00:17:29catterer has to have cater like a
00:17:31500 to 100, at
00:17:34at the look food tray, they have, to
00:17:37wash all by hand, there's no automatic
00:17:41machines like in other countries and i don't know how to to
00:17:45dry those tray after being washed
00:17:49clean, the washing detergen are are good, but by
00:17:53the time they have to stack, are they
00:17:55all pure totally
00:17:59dry or there some moisture, but these are basic food
00:18:03service issues any country, yeah, but but this is that...
00:18:07that's a level of the operation okay, but this one
00:18:11is you know some some these
00:18:15cater just on the on the second or the third tier
00:18:19the area
00:18:20some look very dubious you know you look at all the you know
00:18:23this content is coming up in the social media people reporting
00:18:27about the the kitchens
00:18:30conditions no strict standard so they have to
00:18:34go in and what have a establish a standard?
00:18:37and to control
00:18:38that much the inspectors, inspectors like you, if you made a spot
00:18:42visit to a kitchen, you would be shocked, I bet, yeah, oh yeah, you wouldn't want
00:18:46to go in there, I think, okay, so
00:18:48you know there, the last point then is is there needs to be better and more
00:18:52transparent thing about the money because the taxpayers money, 15
00:18:55billion, yeah, 15 billion dollars, and
00:18:59because the government needs to win back the public, one trillion per day, yes,
00:19:03one trillion per day, because that's their kids, your kids are getting.
00:19:07sick and that is not cool and before we go on this, I want to take a minute to talk
00:19:11about one project that we were talking about before the show, um, William
00:19:15Wongso now has a product that is on sale in the United
00:19:19States, I have personally been looking for national
00:19:22product to to promote as Indonesia's food product
00:19:26and his product is Randang which is which is
00:19:29usually beef and it's it's made in
00:19:32coconut cream with certain spices, it's a unique
00:19:36thing to Indonesia and... where are they on sale and why did you do this real
00:19:39quick? look,
00:19:42Indonesia is too diverse when it we talk about the food
00:19:46culture, so must pick one to capture the
00:19:50attention to the world, the complexity,
00:19:54the pride the rendang, everyone in Indonesia they know
00:19:58rendang right? yes of course, everybody know,
00:20:02so if we can produce it just to show one
00:20:05complexity and they will think, what?
00:20:09but to produce you cannot export
00:20:12beef from Indonesia, the only thing that if you
00:20:16can export that i want to keep the authenticity
00:20:19is the spice space, the flavor, no,
00:20:23yeah, the seasoning, and the coconut
00:20:26cream, you cannot do run down without good coconut
00:20:30cream, that has to come from Indonesia, but it take
00:20:34a long process, because us, we are the only... good
00:20:37product from Indonesia produced in US under the USD
00:20:41and FDA which
00:20:43are very thick in talking process and it's
00:20:46called simple and one packet. costs about
00:20:50how much $30, you
00:20:52need to sell it in like whole foods or yeah,
00:20:56we
00:20:57we plan my ambitious is to cover 54
00:21:01state, okay, good luck on that, best wishes to you sir,
00:21:05rundang has been nominated, not he's been
00:21:08elected, yes, whatever, as the best food in the
00:21:12world,
00:21:12i remember that, yeah, and now we have a product to promote, okay,
00:21:16um, more hot indo is ahead, travel dreams why Most
00:21:20Indonesians by far have never left the
00:21:22country.
00:22:37travel dreams: now who doesn't want to head overseas on holiday?
00:22:41Unfortunately, those desires fall short in many places, pew
00:22:45research center survey of 24 countries listed those
00:22:48where most people have... have never traveled abroad, number one
00:22:52is India with 95% of its population having never left
00:22:56home, at number two is guess, Indonesia with
00:22:5992%, followed by Brazil at
00:23:0187%, a little surprising to me, but I think the
00:23:05number one factor is the huge population base, I mean you you
00:23:09got more people living outside in the rural areas who can't even afford to go to come to
00:23:13Jakarta, the percentage who can't afford it
00:23:17is very low, yeah economic factory. Yeah, absolutely, I think
00:23:21mainly economic factors can't afford it, cannot afford it, but there are still
00:23:25people who save to go abroad to do haj and umrah, there you
00:23:29go, and also go to the Vatican, yeah, how do they religious,
00:23:33religious pilgrimage, they say for years though,
00:23:35that's tens, tens of years, yes,
00:23:39nearly 90% Muslims your life, sometimes nearly their lifetime, almost you
00:23:42know the entire lifetime, sometimes yeah, at the
00:23:46end, then you know you got your 70s and you're almost.
00:23:50and the only place you have gone in your life is middle east because midle
00:23:54east or actually the vatican oh oh for the christians who
00:23:58want pilgrimage to and also or yeah
00:24:02Israel you the survey said other factors include things
00:24:06like passport access which is is also money factor you got
00:24:10to pay for a passport and geographic location um you know if you live
00:24:14far away out the centers is hard to get everywhere you're going but you need
00:24:18to go to Chakata first. before you travel, oh bi, there's there's a
00:24:22transit point, so William, does the high percentage of homebound
00:24:26Indonesians surprise you? not
00:24:30really, because as as what she said, is is the
00:24:33economic factors, but the lot their mind, because we have
00:24:37majority Muslim country, the first their
00:24:41priority, I think go to Haj, yes, that is considered abroad,
00:24:45yes, yeah, they don't mind to, they don't think go to New
00:24:48York, no, go to Makkah, it's a different kind of
00:24:51pilgrimage, yes, yes, they go to Makkah, they're fine,
00:24:55except 8% of Indonesians who travel about, that seems
00:24:59crazily low for someone, well if you compare to
00:25:02280 million, it's about 20 million, yeah,
00:25:0620 million travelling, that's not a small number, that's a it's actually
00:25:09increasing compares to like I don't, 10 years ago, middle class is growing, that's
00:25:13why, and more outbound than inbound, more
00:25:17going out than people. in yeah, oh okay, and
00:25:21that's tourism, which is another issue other
00:25:24sector, one more coming in right at the max, one more point
00:25:28the 92% in Indonesia who said they never left the country,
00:25:32the survey said, 27% of that
00:25:3592%, got that, said they don't care, they don't care to go
00:25:39anywhere anyway, so even if they had the opportunity, mean why would they
00:25:42say that, because some people are just happy to be where they
00:25:46are, and plus it's
00:25:48you know the difficulties of traveling, the language
00:25:50barrier and the language exposure
00:25:54and food issues food issue also some people will only travel to
00:25:58places where they can eat halal food yes
00:26:01so this i think america also in the lot in the center of America
00:26:05is lot of America, they said they said
00:26:0862% American has no passport, I'm not surprised at
00:26:12that, and that's what adds to their ignorance of
00:26:16world issues and and and and topics. um, last point on
00:26:20this, at the other end, just, I don't know where the United States is, but less
00:26:24than one%, less than one percent in Sweden and the
00:26:28Netherlands have never traveled abroad, I think it's
00:26:32also... 99% of everybody in Netherlands and Sweden have traveled
00:26:36because
00:26:37I know how many how many sorry 1% travel how come
00:26:41that low? never traveled anywhere, yes, only
