Our Commitment
Apprised.news is committed to making our intelligence briefs accessible to all readers. We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 and 2.2 at the AA level.
Accessibility Features
Current features we have implemented:
- Keyboard navigation: All interactive elements (navigation, tabs, buttons, links) are accessible via keyboard.
- Skip navigation: A skip-to-content link is provided for keyboard users.
- Color contrast: Text and interactive elements meet WCAG AA contrast ratios (4.5:1 for body text, 3:1 for large text).
- Light and dark themes: Users can choose their preferred color scheme, with system preference detection.
- Semantic HTML: Proper heading hierarchy, ARIA landmarks, and semantic elements throughout.
- Focus indicators: Visible focus outlines on all interactive elements.
- Responsive design: Content adapts to screen sizes from 320px to large displays.
- Reduced motion: Animations are disabled when the user's system prefers reduced motion.
- Text scaling: Content remains readable when text is scaled up to 200%.
- Screen reader support: ARIA attributes, roles, and labels provide context for assistive technology.
Known Limitations
Areas we are actively working to improve:
- Some dynamically loaded brief content may not announce updates to screen readers immediately.
- Complex data visualizations in intelligence reports may need additional text alternatives.
- The analyst query generator is being evaluated for full assistive technology compatibility.
Standards
We test against:
- WCAG 2.1 Level AA
- WCAG 2.2 Level AA
- Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act
- EN 301 549 (European accessibility standard)
Testing
We test with:
- Automated testing via axe-core and Lighthouse
- Manual keyboard-only navigation testing
- Screen reader testing (NVDA on Windows, VoiceOver on macOS)
- Color contrast verification using WebAIM tools
